Hey everyone, it's Lindsay from your favorite Fallout channel that you’ve totally subscribed to! Right? Right? Anakin? 😂
This is the long-awaited Norm video. A lot of people relate to Norm, and for good reason. I’m unabashedly projecting my autistic qualities onto him because I do what I want. Because I’m autistic.
In this video, I talk about how Norm's experiences mirror real-life struggles with autism, privilege, and finding your place in a society that’s not built for you. I explore the nuances of his character and how he’s shaped by his environment, touching on everything from his interactions with his family to his journey throughout the vault trinity. This isn’t just a breakdown of his character; it’s a look into how the themes of Fallout connect to the real world, especially for those of us on the spectrum.
If you're curious about autism, enjoy character deep dives, or just love Fallout, check it out! I get pretty candid about my own autistic experience and how it shapes my perspective. And if you’re new here, hit that subscribe button for more deep dives and rants.

Hi Lindsay. Thank you. I'm a privileged old, straight, white, male (5 strikes against me right there for some), who has led a life of wondering why I don't seem to fit in. The way you've combined the topics of Fallout and autism in this video, has had me spellbound. Your explanation of the way that autistic people interact with others, kept ticking all the boxes. When you said autistics are canaries in coal mines, I yelled 'yes' at my screen. I have called myself that, unable to articulate why I can tell that things don't add up yet others seem oblivious, and even worse, just don't seem to care. I was immediately drawn to Norm as a character in the series, that affiliation probably due to seeing so much of myself in it. I've been going back-and-forth about the worth of trying to get a diagnosis - like I need another label - I've seen how those are abused - versus the benefit of knowing one way or another. I think this video has shown me - there is a realistic probability that I am Norm - undiagnosed, trapped in a society that doesn't understand me. I really appreciate the effort you put into your videos. Thanks again.

Also, curious, how did my use describing it as a "tool" work for you? I was thinking about exactly what you said - a lot of autistic people are seeing how tribalism is destroying society, so the last thing they want is a label. So I wanted to make sure I framed it as a tool instead for that exact reason because it's a valid concern.

@@lindsaysfallout You are definitely adding value to the world. Even if your videos were "just" Fallout videos, they're high-quality and worthwhile. When you add your unique perspective, they are stellar. I found the use of the tool analogy pretty good - to focus on how diagnosis provides a way to engage with the world, a mental tool to apply to daily life. Apple trees don't grow in vaults. Jello is shelf stable and made of bone meal. The dead are recycled in vaults. This is recurring symbolism. Lucy is holding an apple in her flashbacks and Maximus demands and apple from Thaddeus. While on the subject, Betty claims to have buried Norm's mother's PipBoy with her. They don't bury their dead and they don't waste technology.

    • @TheK5K

I wondered about the jelly mould symbolism - the bone meal angle - that's so Fallout. Yeah, yummy yummy Jello - tastes just like Mom used to make...or just like Mom.

@@TheK5K the apple is great too. It reminds me of The Apple of Discord and the Garden of Eden. It is temptation and also the prize that goes only to the most worthy. Lucy holding the apple is perfect because she's an innocent fool, and the presence of apple trees in Shady Sands as well as their absence in the wasteland symbolizes cooperative civilization being a return to Eden which was again destroyed by the sin of the unworthy.
Why do people prefer Jello to Apple pie? They don't know any better, and as a result they don't demand better.

I want to understand their behaviors and I try to respect them and participate. But at the end of the day I am not one of them and I know this.

Edit: One of my favorite storylines in the series was the vault stuff with Norm - that's why I was so excited for your take on it. But I would have never read into all the things you brought up in this video. It makes me wonder if we watched the same thing? Your media literacy is on a level I want to be on. Hahahaha! But really, it makes a lot of sense. I always felt that I was missing something in my read of his character because yeah, he's smart, but his hyper-fixation was something else. I mean, it was fun rooting for him to get to the truth but there was really something I couldn't quite put my finger on. He's autistic. Of course! But at the same time, it made me sad to learn, too. With that new lens, you can really see how most people in his life have mistreated him. Plus, I never considered that he was being manipulated into killing the raiders or marching himself into Vault 31. It makes me have more sympathy for Norm. But beyond Norm, your video really sheds a beautiful light on the autistic community. It helped me understand the community's struggles on a day-to-day and made me consider how I can show up better as a friend, family member, coworker. I hope your video reaches the intended audience because it's an important message to hear: You are all braver than I could ever hope to be.

Also, not male but masc anyway (NB/afab), white, with a past flirtation with the far right to the point of cringe humor and bad takes (and now a far left libsoc because thats what makes sense to me [we have robots and enough food, money, housing for all. Why is anyone going without and working hard for not nearly enough money?])

One thing I disagree with you about is your assessment of labels
Both in the sense that labels like Democrat and Republican help me personally understand where to categorize a person I'm speaking or listening to, but also in that they help us narrow down ideas and groups to more accurately understand what is and is not being criticized
"Progressives" is a WAAAAY huge label, that includes anyone from what could be called the center, all the way to the far left.
Labels also allow us to determine ideology, and at least in my personal opinion, the scenes you mentioned to me is more of a critique of Neo Liberal ideology, not "progressives" seeing as Neo Liberalism is not at all what could be called a "Progressive" ideology.

    • @lindsaysfallout
      @lindsaysfallout  2 месяца назад +1

Well considering how emotionally attached people are to their labels, you can see how I was kind of in a bind here. You appear to have a really firm idea that there are "correct" and "incorrect" words to use in this context, but it's a lot more like there are a bunch of different words and labels that hit a bunch of different people a bunch of different ways, so when someone like me is in front of a microphone presenting to the general public, I have to not only balance what's true and not true, but also balance what terminology I'm expecting my audience to be familiar with. From that standpoint, picking a really general word (or as you put it a WAAAAY huge label) was really my best shot at getting the point across. Even if the people watching this video don't call that group "progressive," hopefully they get what group I'm talking about, and I'll let them swap out the word in their own mind to their liking.
So yeah, you're not wrong if you disagree with me, but if you think there was one way for me to be "correct" here, that's where I disagree with you.

I started this video just because it's about the Fallout TV show, and I've enjoyed your other videos on the subject. I'm a straight white male nearing 40, and for the past year or so I've been wondering about the possibility of being autistic.
I've learned that it's not like how it's portrayed in movies and TV. I'm still not sure if I am autistic or not since some of the characteristics you describe here also describe me, but others don't. For example, two of the typical symptoms I've always heard about, not making eye contact and not understanding sarcasm, don't apply to me at all. I understand the eye contact thing doesn't necessarily apply to everyone, but what about the difficulty with sarcasm?

When you say you take the progressive side of most issues despite taking issues individually, I think this is because each side of an issue comes from either the progressive or conservative axiom, and you follow the rational conclusion of that progressive axiom. So really the rational side of any issue is determined by what fundamental axiom you accept as true. It would honestly be irrational to be evenly progressive in some ways and conservative in others (I say this as somebody who mostly leans conservative)

The more of your videos I watch the more I wonder if I’m neurodivergent as well as traumatized. I was diagnosed with PTSD during chemotherapy. When I was a kid I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. What if that diagnosis hid what was really going on? Huh, time to go back to the psychologist.

I’ve had some suspicion for a while that I may be autistic. I’ve lived my whole life (38 years) feeling very other. I often explain to my family and friends that I sometimes feel like an alien, studying society like an anthropologist or animal behavioralist. I feel like Jane Goodall. I love humans. I want to understand their behaviors and I try to respect them and participate. But at the end of the day I am not one of them and I know this.
Watching this has me feeling seen. You even said the words feeling alien. I intend to bring this up with the doctor soon. But I felt like it’s worth sharing.
    I’ve enjoyed your video essays!
