I'm actually impressed, this is overall quite well made and the outfits are generally nice, plus the guy is rather pleasant to look at, haha! I did physically cringe at the emo one though, emo is its own thing (even if it's technically a cousin of goth since they both have their roots in punk) and if I'm not terribly misinformed the clothing style that accompanies the genre is called fashion core. That aside, I am rather happy with this video, and I honestly think it's better than the women's one.
I don't know how accurate the timeline is though, I have little to no knowledge about when different subgenres emerged (aside from trad, which is obviously the earliest one, hence the name) so I can't comment on whether or not the years are correct. I think these outfits are a lot better and more "realistic" than the women's though, those looked more costumey, plus they included too many things that weren't really... relevant. Like pin-up. I'm more pleased with this.
Pastel Goth is just Pastel, there is no music attached to it, it's just so some fashion much like the old 'Perky Goth' moniker. It's all silly fashion packagings.
with the amount of complaints they're getting for adding emo, which technically branched off of goth😂 I just want to see everyone's reactions if they added pastel goth in it!
Emo was an offshoot of Hardcore Punk, started in Washington D.C. It's not a branch off Goth, which came from Post Punk in England. And we didn't like pastel goth being included in the other video either. "Pastel goth" is just a tumbler trend with no connection to Goth music. Not happy with cyber either, as that comes from Rave fashion and a video game and not goth. We don't like it when people spread incorrect information and give people false ideas about Goth (and other subcultures/music scenes). It can have a harmful effect on those scenes in the long run.
Indigo Lash I'm with +Barbara Seiwell on this. Emo is nothing related to goth. the only relative they have is punk. Cyber is not Goth it's dark rave music.
I really like the fact that goth subculture isn't afraid of androgyny, like I dig that. There's a little femininity in these looks and that's punk as fuck
Tkat it's not pathetic to be feminine, if a guy wants to "emasculate" himself it's his choice. Unrelated, that was probably a reference to BDSM in the community lmao
I agree with Thomas Darkraven. If you ask a goth about emo, and an emo about gotu they will say they are different. They want nothing to do with eachothsr
Great video! I've always loved seeing people's goth styles, but I didn't really know the names of each style. This was very educational. It turns out my favorite styles are Edwardian and Vampire.
A more accurate title would have been '40 Years of Men's Alternative Style', as a fair portion of these aren't apart of goth, but are their own subculture of Alternative.
I felt the same with their other video on women's goth subculture. Some of what was there was indeed gothic subculture, but some of it was definitely more alternative style rather than specifically goth.
I think the only one I found highly questionable was Emo, considering all the others do play a part in thr goth subculture. Industrial is apparantly really popular at goth clubs too sso i think it fits
@@jasperherron5267 yeh i reckon that style was more new age punk, generally the originial punk movement wore practical boots (no leather straps tying them together) because it was a different time, and violence was more of a thing (not as much surveillance) wouldve worn a brighter hairstyle (in america) and a bigger hairstyle (in britain), and less of the plaid, though it was present
Suzanne MacVicar no it wasn’t. Emo is an offshoot of hardcore punk rock known as emotive hardcore and started in the 1980’s. What this video showed was second wave emo.
Yep, 36 here and I remember all past 1990. Went to high school with vamps and dudes wearing crow makeup. Still attracted to it, and now my 14 year old daughter likes goth dudes lol. By the way, this guy is gorgeous!
Early 90s teen here, the industrial goth was what all the rivet heads that were following the T.O.P.Y movement laughed at. What's shown is store bought fashion that was picking up the trends from what was crawling around the gutters making due with a pair boots jeans and an old army jacket.
Alchemist's Fire Ikr if I'm just going to school I don't feel like waking up two hours early to put all the fancy clothing and makeup on haha. Feel like many people are with us on this
This is literally my every day style. I work for a college so I can't be as goth as others are, but yeah, black or dark grey jeans, my docs, and a shirt with either a band on it or some culty symbols. Today it looks like my depeche mode shirt with the violator rose on it
Yes! Low-key goth = most of my wardrobe. Like rn I'm wearing a 1960s little black dress, black tights, black boots, black lace shawl, black St. Peter's cross necklace, smoky quartz necklace, septum ring, minimal natural makeup. I never wear heavy makeup or full-on club looks.
Emo was NOT a goth subculture. I'm not sure you even understand what a subculture is. Goth IS a subculture. It doesn't have subcultures of it's own. It is a subculture built around supporting a genre of music, also called Goth. It has subgenres like Goth rock, deathrock, darkwave, coldwave, etc., Emo was another genre of music which was a subgenre of punk & not of goth. What is most commonly called "emo" today is scene fashion, which isn't goth either.
I watched more than a dozen reaction videos of this one and there are 3 things I’d like to share about that: -Sure Punk broke the mold but Punk is still Punk today (with its own branching tree and all) but I don’t know if Punk shares the respect that Goth has towards it… some may have the same reaction to this that Goths has with the Emo style. (Goth is not punk! Followed with a stream of angry emojis) -Emo! It’s not Goth, as a strong majority agrees with, but the influence is undeniable. It’s literally like Goth got to see Punk again and Say: Hey Punk! Remember when we hooked up 20 something years ago? Turns out we had a child. Of course, both Punk and Goth would not recognize it as their child and it would feel rejected and pretty misunderstood… Emo. -So many reactions about the Trad Goth’s bandanna and boots when, for me, my first reaction was: Oh! Look! It’s Al Jourgensen. Common accessories among the Trad Goths? Maybe not. But, I mean, it’s Al, right? Anyways. I enjoyed it very much. Have a good day.
I still think Emo has its place here, on a fashion standpoint. I would even be so bold to suggest that it's probably the most versatile style in the lot. Let's say you dress as an Emo and crash any other styles's party. On every occasion you'd be off, yes, but not as off as other pairings might. Like a Cyber Goth at a Vamp's party or an Edwardian at a Punk concert. That being said, maybe I know nothing, maybe I'm utterly wrong, but I will keep wearing what I like and listening to whatever pleases my eardrums. It's just fashion.
Maybe "40 years of Men's Alternative Fashion" would indeed be a better title, but so much less fun! (I mean, I never watched Reaction Videos except for this one. Around 20! So fun!) Emo has nothing to do with Goth? Maybe. I will sure never argue over the fact that, music-wise, it's, as you say taking it back to the beginning. Punk and Rock, sure! And is hasn't the same feel. Not. One. Bit. Agreed. As for the themes goes... well I'm sure a cowboy can feel estranged too. All I'm saying is: There's a taint. An obvious one. Visually. Well! History will tell. But my guess is that, 40 years from now, even in fashion, many people will still associate the two. And it will still piss people off =)
Al Jourgensen as the Trad Goth is the equal to Nina Hagen as the Deathrocker in the Women's one: very little people recongized them, and they would complain about his bandana or her hairdo not being a thing when it was based on an actual artist.
Excellent production. And an accurate rendition. I love how it all flows and how we witness this incredible evolution and historical progression of punk rocker. new romantic, goth, vamp and emo. Absolutely brilliant
The amount of 20somethings complaining about being compared to emo style is hilarious. The whole point of fashion is that it branches and evolves whether you like where it goes or not.
Shannon Dunn no one is coming at y'all for liking anything that wasn't around in your era, I clearly do because I'm here watching a history of goth fashion video, I honestly don't see what that has to do with anything that was said
Goth is more than fashion. It's music first and foremost and you dress to identify with that. I like a lot of post punk/ goth rock but I also really like industrial and ebm. So I might do up my hair like siouxsie one day and have cyberlox in my hair the next. We aren't just rejecting a fashion style when we complain about emo we are complaining about a style of music and a tribe if you will that we don't wish to identify with. Think of goth clothing as tribal markings as opposed to just a fashion statement and then you'll be on the right lines. Saying that goth and emo are the same is just offensive. The gothic subculture is way more complex than you care to imagine haha
I was a club kid in the 80s, and all these styles were there. Goth started from a hippy movement (Stevie Nicks and 13th Floor Elevators/Roky Erickson). By the 70s we have Siouxsie Sioux, Robert Smith, Klaus Nomi and Fad Gadget.
Psychedelia was such a major influence in a lot of the bands that sprouted in the early 80s (you can definitely hear it in early SOM albums like Alice; the instrumental song Phantom definitely gave me a Gonzo-era Hunter S Thompson meets Spaghetti Western vibe). Eldritch himself took on the essence of the former Lizard King, Jim Morrison in the way he performed
@@bigpuma444 That sound of Punk goes back to the 60s America with MC5... The Goth punk girl goes back to the 20s Vamp silent movie star. The 80s were such a mashup of 20s vamp meets Mod 60s, and I am OK with that. I am sooooo OK with the kids today lovin them some 80s.
I won't let you be the death of me. I refuse to let you bring me down. I wont let you make me out to be the one who's in the wrong. I know i've lost my mind before. But now im back. And im better than ever!
I can't help but laugh a little at all the "Emo is not goth!" comments. I know, it's not. But they ARE very similar styles. And the title of the video can't be "40 Years of Men's Goth/Emo/Punk and Other Styles That Resemble Them!" That'd sound silly. So... yeah. Anyway, he's really good looking in all of the styles. :)
Less confusing than what they went with imho, I mean, why don't they just throw in metal because they wear black too, if this is just about style and nothing to do with music, metal is way more goth than emo or punk, just a weird title for the contents
Okay then? If "alternative men's fashion" is too vague for people to wrap their minds around then they should find a different title for it. But I can't justify giving the video a title with "goth" in it because most of these styles aren't goth, or don't even exist (I can't find ANYTHING on 'Edwardian goth'. Period clothes aren't goth anyay, they're just period clothes) and it's giving people misconceptions and even more stereotypes about the subculture when that's what us goths (the creator of this video is supposedly one) are supposed to be stopping. Now people think emo is goth and she's just made things worse.
this woman is right, please just chillax and stop tagging people, U know, just enjoy ur dark stuff and don't waste ur time trinna find the posers and bully 'em, cuz U never know, and elitists are kinda beggining to sound like the typical showy daddy's girl, otherwise know as basic bitch
@Wydozv ExYeest all dance styles originate from ballet and traditional folk dancers. That doesn't mean hip hop and krumping should be categorized the same.
To be fair, emo did come out of goth. Emo is like a more... juvenile take on goth, I suppose. Most emos are younger people who wear black variations of clothes that are popular now, and listen to music with heavy emotions. I think emo is for the teens that are into the darker stuff but still like some of the modern, more wearable clothes. Also, emos are a lot more hormonal and sad. Emo's music is like a punk-rock with depressing lyrics and a minor key, whereas goth music has more of a unique tone and is a genre of its own.
Elementary School Dropout as an 80s Goth I can say that emo is similar to the way we were in terms of mood and seriousness. We were jaded, guarded, skeptical, typical Gen X angst. Most goths I see today are chipper and animated. But emo matched more of our serious side, the way I remember it back in the day.
I wouldn't really consider myself emo, because I only listen to one band that is stereotyped to be emo. I usually listen to Slipknot and other stuff now though.. But I do have the haircut.
Goth is a derivation of post-punk and glam rock. Emo is a derivation of hardcore punk. They startec withen ten years of each other and share a sort of Byronic romanticism, but are stylistically very different.
Emo isn't really what people think it is. In origin it had nothing to do with wearing all black and being dark in an emotional sense. Emo came out of hardcore punk with bands like embrace and rites of spring. The music can also sound rather happy like but with emotional lyrics like Northfolk or camping in Alaska. If you take a look at these bands and the people who'd listen to them, they don't sound or look anything like Goths.

Why is emo on here? Emo and Goth are two totally different suncultures from attitude to fashion
Emo had evolved from punk, yet took inspiration from both the punk and the goth subcultures.
gothic has also evolved out of punk. Sadly Emo is goth, just as cybergoth is. Emo is gothic for pussys
Goth or emo definatly wouldnt call them a sun.culture 😂 everyone to pale for that😆

I love the Einstürzende Neubauten tattoo they gave him for the industrial look! It’s a nice little touch that pays tribute to that era.
Well spotted!
And the skinny puppy logo
KreeZafi I agree with you. the women's one mixed up Gothic Lolita with just being goth when it is under the lolita category lol
KreeZafi The music of Goth and Deathrock go back to late 1970s/Early 1980s so in all factors the Trad and Deathrock styles still endure
KreeZafi What about pastel goth?
Pastel Goth is just Pastel, there is no music attached to it, it's just so some fashion much like the old 'Perky Goth' moniker. It's all silly fashion packagings.
Edgar Allan Poe is a true goth.
mary shelly too
cant get any gothier than those two
You mean Night Pain.
never more.
gud 4 him
with the amount of complaints they're getting for adding emo, which technically branched off of goth😂 I just want to see everyone's reactions if they added pastel goth in it!
Indigo Lash There's a pastel goth in our women's goth style video. Didn't feel it was as much of a trend amongst men.
Liisa Ladouceur I've seen that one! I enjoyed both the videos myself!
Pastel Goth is still a form of Goth. Emo is it's own separate thing.

Great video! I've always loved seeing people's goth styles, but I didn't really know the names of each style. This was very educational. It turns out my favorite styles are Edwardian and Vampire.
A more accurate title would have been '40 Years of Men's Alternative Style', as a fair portion of these aren't apart of goth, but are their own subculture of Alternative.
well considering punk is like the papa or atleast the ancestor of all of these it makes sense as to why punk was included but i dont understand emo
I have to agree..As an Emo myself I can clearly say that Emo is completely different from Goth
HAHAHAHAHAHA THE EMO PART HAHAHAHAHA This is REALLY not helping people who can't sort out the difference between emo and goth.
I mean, no arguments from me, given my own take on goth-dom, but don't tell that to It's Black Friday and some others I know.
Agreed
Suzanne MacVicar no it wasn’t. Emo is an offshoot of hardcore punk rock known as emotive hardcore and started in the 1980’s. What this video showed was second wave emo.

Early 90s teen here, the industrial goth was what all the rivet heads that were following the T.O.P.Y movement laughed at. What's shown is store bought fashion that was picking up the trends from what was crawling around the gutters making due with a pair boots jeans and an old army jacket.
Generic weekend goth: Black Jeans, Boots and random Band-Shirt.
Yes please, Everyday Goth needs representation too, not all of us wear club looks day in-day out
Alchemist's Fire Ikr if I'm just going to school I don't feel like waking up two hours early to put all the fancy clothing and makeup on haha.
Now that you mention that we could have made the last look and just called it "Forever."
I know it's been a decade but I still feel like if you put black eyeliner and a lip ring on any guy he's suddenly 10x more attractive to me
its true same here ahaha

Dreaded Jenocide_Doll emo was a "goth" subculture then became its own subculture and known for different reasons.
I have come back to this video after like 3 years and realized just how much my style has changed and nowadays fits more of the Edwardian goth style.
I'm not Goth (at least not fashion wise lol) but I've always swooned for goth guys like him 😍

The first one just looked like a very young gerard way. Lol.
I watched more than a dozen reaction videos of this one and there are 3 things I’d like to share about that:
-Sure Punk broke the mold but Punk is still Punk today (with its own branching tree and all) but I don’t know if Punk shares the respect that Goth has towards it… some may have the same reaction to this that Goths has with the Emo style. (Goth is not punk! Followed with a stream of angry emojis)
-Emo!
Around 20! So fun!)
Emo has nothing to do with Goth?

Saw Nina Hagen during Universal Ballroom tour. Still remember her cover of Rape Me quite well.

This guy is really hot and I'm super into that kilt.
This was done so well. Love the cheeky "emo #sorrynotsorry". Some people don't appreciate a good trolling.
The amount of 20somethings complaining about being compared to emo style is hilarious. The whole point of fashion is that it branches and evolves whether you like where it goes or not.
Laura Iaccino haha seriously, funniest part is these teens to 20 something year olds probably weren't even around for the original goth scene
Shannon Dunn no one is coming at y'all for liking anything that wasn't around in your era, I clearly do because I'm here watching a history of goth fashion video, I honestly don't see what that has to do with anything that was said
goth is a subculture not a fashion trend
Thoths Temple someone's butthurt.

Amazing project. I watch it every year when yt randomly recommend it to me again and it still fascinates me. Really cool work 🖤
I was a club kid in the 80s, and all these styles were there. Goth started from a hippy movement (Stevie Nicks and 13th Floor Elevators/Roky Erickson). By the 70s we have Siouxsie Sioux, Robert Smith, Klaus Nomi and Fad Gadget.
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. Extra points for Roky. Horror rock and Hammer Horror films were a big influence on goth.

"Alternative mens fashion" is too much to handle?
Could work I guess. But then it's not overly clear to the possible viewers what styles are in question. :P
Less confusing than what they went with imho, I mean, why don't they just throw in metal because they wear black too, if this is just about style and nothing to do with music, metal is way more goth than emo or punk, just a weird title for the contents
Jaden Oldfield You have a point there. :)

HOW DOES HE LOOK SO GOOD IN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE OUTFITS AAAAAAAAAA
Emo isn’t suppose to have a fashion, it’s just a genre. Goth on the other hand is both.
