- The Ocean Cleanup is heading back to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with System 03, so Catching Up speaks to Senior Offshore Representative Grete Ernst ahead of her latest trip to the Pacific Ocean.
Listen to the full podcast here: theoceancleanup.com/podcasts/..., or all the major podcast platforms.
Grete has front-row seats for the largest cleanup in history and shares her excitement at heading out once more. But Grete has many tales to tell from her time offshore, and she reveals what life is really like with the same crew for weeks on end, with land nearly a week’s journey away - as she says, almost like a different planet.
In such a key year for our oceans, Grete tells us how she'll be helping us optimize System 03 following its winter upgrades to make us even more impactful and efficient in cleaning plastic. From the Global Plastics Treaty to the importance of creative thinking in engineering, Grete gives us the full picture on cleaning the ocean - from up close.

Your ideas, your work is so amazing!
Brilliant achievements to date.I hope these clean up vessels are deployed through out our planet and are part financed by the oil companies which make vast amount of money every day. There is a lot of debris in our oceans and plastics is just one of them.A huge pat on everyone’s back who gets involved in these projects 🌎🌍🌏🦀🦞🦐🦑🐙🐡🐠🐟🐬🐳We have to look after our world.
When you guys are done cleaning the sea, are you going to clean space debry? Theres alot of old satelite parts up there 👀
O_o
Thanks for this video but can we see the ocean when it's not so 'pacified'. What's it like on a bad day?
Thank you!!
Nice interview with a great content 👌🏽
My son (Åvid) and I would love to participate in this project 😊 but I told him we must wait since he's only 4 now.
In the meantime we can do our regular beach cleanups whenever we get to visit the beach here in socal. 💛
Amazing 😊😊😊
Наконец-то люди занялись уборкой планеты! спасибо ребятам!
When you love doing something it is not really work. Go Ocean Cleanup
Your work is Inspiring!
Are there openings for Volunteers aboard these boats?? Any Qualifications??
💙
How long is a trip usually?
Why we keep producing plastics frustrating. If we can't dispose of something that won't decompose, it needs to be rethought.
It's sick isn't it, in a natural world and for something that takes thousands of years to degrade. Money, remember, money money, that's what the government thinks, a quick buck, never mind the ecosystem, animals, or people's health. 😢 the government's are pure scum. A quick one. If your in uk, don't believe your recycling ends up recycled. It goes to Turkey, Bangladesh and many more places.
Have u heard of that thing called MONEY?
I completely agree. If we can send people to space and build solar panels then we must be able to make a earth friendly plastic
I wouldn't say plastic on its own is a terrible thing. We simply do not have any materials that could compare as far as I'm aware for cost and environmental impact of making it. We just need a better system of handling it post life, and definitely get rid of unnecessary single use plastics with the exception of some food packaging. The food packaging is vital to keeping food fresher for longer to feed everyone.
@@arog7493 I agree!
💖
The secrete to plastics is to incinerate and produce hydro. Use the petro locked in the plastic to produce hydro
There is a plant operating 24 / 7 at Clarington,Ontario, Zero issues.
Pls Nigeria next
save us
Grete Ernst Voice is like a NASA Astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli
Wow, great woman! Imagine many countries putting thousands of ships like these onto the ocean instead of buying weapons and financing strange things!
Important & good work but nothing changes until there are better options & consequences for plastic producers.
hope AI will soon have a capability to sort and segregate the garbage.. Stay fit and healthy all. THANK YOU
I will be honest I look at the current generation and they scare the hell out of me. But then I look at things like this and I still have hope I'm actually amazed and awestruck and I believe in people again...
Thank you for helping clean up the mess that we all made. Thank you to the kid who came up with this Idea. Thank you to his teachers that told him to follow his dreams. And thank God for giving us his image. So that we don't have to just be destructive. We can also create, love and protect.
put a big screen on the ship connect it with starlink internet.
do live stream and donors name will be visible with big letter on the tv screen.
the bigger the donation the longer their name stays on the screen
Why we are not replacing plastics with other materials is mind boggling. Glass is more expensive but far more recyclable. Aluminum as well. Why do we not put these plastic manufacturers out of business? Sue the pants right off them. We lived without plastic for thousands of years. We don’t need it.
altruism at it's finest.
Нужно решать эту проблему на государственном, на законодательном, на международном уровне! Требуется запрет производства пластика в массовой промышленности.
😢stop making plastic
I love you all 🇫🇮❤️❤️🇫🇮👍🫵
