One Year Self-Taught Fingerstyle Guitar Progress

- So in July 2018, I felt so inspired to start learning the guitar and so I did! It was very hard for me starting up and I had wanted to give up soo many times. So, I thought that documenting my journey would motivate me to learn more. It did, because although I felt like I hadn't progressed at all when I did rewatch my old videos and I had noticed that I was slowly getting better. This is by no means perfect, I have sooo much more to learn!
edit: I didn't think anyone was going to watch this video so I am so sorry about the quality of the editing! thank u for watching though - it helps me keep going and stay motivated.
Things I hope to improve on in my second year of playing:
- my rhythm
- percussion techniques
- playing cleanly overall
Guitar used: Yamaha FG800 - Видеоклипы
Hi Angela, your progress so far is brilliant and I love some of the songs you played towards the end. I’ve got my first guitar on order and want to start with finger play. What do you suggest I do first? Eg should I learn chords, straight into songs etc.
thank you so much for watching! I quickly learnt the basic chords in the first few days. For me, what worked and kept me interested was just playing fingerstyle songs that I liked. However, that has its cons as you skip music theory could help you progress quicker. So, in my second year, I feel like progress i much slower and so I’ve had to visit some music theory like metronome timing.
Start by playing scales. Play C major scale first, then other scales. Then learn few chords like the most popular ones E, Am, D, G, C. These chords alone will help you play many strumming songs. Then start by playing a song that's easy and also which you genuinely enjoy listening to. That helps in keeping yourself motivated.
@angela Nguyen has this right. Play the songs you love, starting with simple versions. This will keep you playing. Literally EVERY other suggestion in this thread falls out of that be it: chords, scales, music theory, whatever. I've been playing guitar for 50 years (I still can't believe I'm writing this) and have played every type of acoustic music. I've learnt a lot of these things, but I've always been led to them by a need to know more to play the songs I love. as well as I can. That is what keeps me playing
I just started playing only 2 weeks ago and using Justin Guitar. Amazing and FREE!
@@Jon77777 What playlist are you using from him on RUclips? Or are you using his website?
my procrastination to me: *you wish that was you huh?*
wow that’s impressive. i’m planning on getting a guitar around my birthday (midway through august) and i loved this video.
thank you so much for watching!! best of luck with the guitar! it's such a good investment
Did you it? How's it going? I get one in a weeks time.
When people ask "did you learn from tab, videos or books?" it tells me that you have no idea how to learn anything :)
Use every resource you can lay your hands/eyes on.
What should I learn it from, serious question because I’m not sure, I know I wouldn’t exactly use tabs. But I don’t know how to read notes though
That's probably the reason they are asking 5head
My fingers used to hurt too...then one of my friends told me to download the chromatic scale and I practiced that 3 times a day..for like seven days...now it doesn't hurt..even a bit..well I'm learning too...
One handed harmonics in the first year damn
haha thanks!!
I can do it in 5 months just play the guitaer so much
I've almost completed 1 year and i can play even tapping harmonics... Intensity of practice is all it takes.
Inspiring! I can’t wait to finish Justinguitar. Graduate from learning all my guitar basics, technique, rhythm, and theory before I start looking for difficult songs I want learn. I skipped a lot of those things and jumped into song-playing when I taught myself piano. I gotta say, it took me 5 years of slow progress because I skipped all of that. When I finally hunkered down to learn the stuff properly, my piano-playing soared in a single year. I could have gotten to where I wanted to be with piano 4 years sooner. So nooo way am I skipping any boring beginners stuff with the guitar this time around. Lol.
So inspiring, this year I want play nonstop note I'm also a learner
You’re incredible! Much better than I am (I’ve been playing since May of 2018). Keep learning, cause this is awesome!
thanks for watching! I’d keen to hear some of your covers
absolutely beautiful to see the progression, I am just now learning fingerstyle as a beginner and this is very inspiring : )
She is good her finger picking style
I can't even play like that
absolutely amazing for
self taught
Wow! That progress is heaps! Its awesome to see! Keep it up
Sophie Lu ahhh thank you for your kind words
this may be over a year late but you made so much progress in such a short amount of time i'm so :o well done this is amazing !
Thanks for sharing your learning fingerstyle guitar journey. I'm a beginner on this guitar playing style.
thanks for taking your time to comment and watch!!
I'm on my first month of self learn Fingerstyle, It's Hard but this bideo motivates me.
I hooe I'll have more improvement like you❣️
How's your learning going?
Yes , I am a beginner as well!! My biggest flaw is timing! I have to master the metronome. Songs aren’t as fasts as we thinkx
Playing an egg shaker to the songs you want to learn with strum/pick hand and get better understanding of drums and bass/snare beats. Youll do great. Nice jibt
ooo i’m interested! what do you mean by this?
finger soreness, great feeling
Why did I cry after watching this tho? :D
And I always wanted to improve myself on fingerstyle but I guess I can't do it better :)
You did a great job!
oh no! thanks for your comment though. Cmon you can do it, start off with easy fingerstyle arrangements and build up from there! you've got this :)
@@angelanguyen9309 aaaa thanks! I will try to improve it 😭💕
reminds of what my one year so far could've looked like if i gave myself more structure and discipline for learning
Amazing Angela! Could you share/recommend any youtube teachers that helped you learn? Thanks
Keep it up!one day u wil make us proud
Lopsng Tser this makes me so happy! thank you, i really appreciate it
Also you have the same model guitar as me (only difference is mine is orange).
That’s so cool, it’s a great guitar isn’t it?
Awesome hope you are still floating in there nothing is impossible.
Thanks for your sweet comment! Still enjoying guitar very much :)
@@angelanguyen9309 I was 5 years old when I started all I had was my ear and a very inexpensive acoustic guitar I'm 65 years old now and I don't regret the time I've put into my playing. Of course today I have a very nice collection and enjoy every moment , I Thank the Lord everyday for this gift much LOVE to you ❤
I wish i had started when I was 5! I look back and I wished that someone had introduced me to to guitar earlier on. But, I'm glad to have started it at 19 :)
I'm playing guitar since 3 years and I'm nowhere near this.Everytime I try playing fingerstyle I just give up.You are an inspiration!I will definitely try fingerstyle this summer.
wowww i’m so happy that you kept playing guitar for three years even when it got frustrating! Just keep at it and you’ll be happy with your progress in no time :)
@@angelanguyen9309 yepp,thank you so much☺❣
@@angelanguyen9309 ps:I finally learned my first fingerstyle song🥰
Keep up the good work on fingerstyle, I'm still working on it every day
What a beautiful touch you have on the guitar.
How did you learn to play fingerstyle right away/ What site or tutorials did you use? Your progress is brilliant BTW keep it up!
Inspirational progress so far! I've also picked up the guitar recently and made a progress video inspired by yours:D
Violet Music wow thanks for watching and commenting, i’ll check your stuff out! :)
Wow such progress! Keep on going. You have such dedication I love it!
Keira Parker Thank you so much this means a lot! I love your videos so much too!

@@angelanguyen9309 oh yeah . long road ahead. But I'm determined :)
rock on home girl!! fearless! love it. you sound lovely!
Hey Angela I love your video It was really awesome to watch your progress!
you inspire me...i been playing the guitar for years...but i got stuck at playing chords and barre chords :) .. i will give these guitar tabs a try...would love to hear any tip on reading guitar tab..i wonder if i should place my hand in the position of a chord or just faithfully follow the tab ...
So glad I saw this video on my recommended!!! I’m also getting a Yamaha FG800 very soon! I’m extremely excited :D. I will do progress videos like this for future me hehe
i got my yamaha fg800! my journey in learning guitar is starting now! :D
@@user-fr9eb7hc9c hey, is it hard to play or uncomfortable? i’m looking into it & don’t know whether to get the fs or fg. cheers
@@serenity2622 I personally don’t know the different between the FS and the FG, but the FG for me has been great. I have no bad things to say about the fg I have
Thank you for the inspiration to go back and persevere with some more practice!
Nice video, BTW I'm from Acoustic life video (beginner fingerstyle). You had left a comment saying you're a "year-ish" into fingerstyle guitar and you made a progress video... So I'm guessing this is it? If so I wanna know if Acoustic Life's tutorial was the only video that got you to this stage
Martin Walters Hi, thanks for dropping by! I used various videos on youtube - mainly
learnt from tabs i found of arrangements from Andrew Foy and other guitarists. The educational youtube videos were more for inspiration as in my first year I sometimes used them, but was mostly lazy to. Best of luck!
@@angelanguyen9309 I'm actually getting better at it now but I find it hard switching between chords, especially those that include using my pinky finger. Any advise on how to increase my speed of switching?
Martin Walters Hi, i’m so glad to hear that you’re improving!! As for advice, I wish I had proper advice but I’m also
learning myself. I think the best is to keep playing, practicing does wonders. i also found that randomly making the shape of the chords like when i’m not playing helps. Like doing a C chord when i’m holding my phone. I don’t know if that makes sense.
Very inspiring, looking forward to seeing and hearing your progress.
thank you! i really do appreciate your comment
Remember that all musician is selftaught cause no one else is doing their practice
omg this is so impressive. i want to get a guitar too 🥺
Your video has given me inspiration that I should continue with fingerstyle.. no matter if it takes time.. I really liked it...
I m starting with "my heart will go on" fingerstyle arrangement by "Let's Play Guitar"
Your progress is inspiring, I'm also learning guitar around 1 month mark now :)
Fingerstyle is awesome
Nice video! I started with guitar, one month ago :)
So satisfying to see improvement video of yours. Great work.
I am intrested in fingerstyle too I am a beginner. Please tell in detail what you practiced and learned to be this good. Keep up the good work sis. 😊
I am too on a fingerstyle journey :)) Great video!! Very inspiring too
thanks for watching 😊
Amazing!
Thank you so much!! I love your vids
May 20 2019 ..... Guitar Face ...Your on You way....Grats
how many minutes/hours did you practise a day?
woow, na ol 🥺
i don’t know what you are saying, but thanks for watching!!

Interesting songs to learn and great progress. You inspire me to learn more percussion techniques.
thanks for watching! i’m excited to see how you go :)
So inspiring ! I'm gonna practice now, thanks 😌
Thanks for watching George! :))
I need to step up my game
wahhh you gave me STRENGTH, INSPIRATION etc. ^.^
How did you actually learn? tabs? How long did it take on average to learn a song?
Ehh i Play for almost 3 years but i never really tried finger style and i think ill try learning it...
Damn that's really good! I've just started with some fingerstyle stuff. I'm wondering like, how difficult is it to sing while playing fingerstyle for you?
Also thanks for sharing your tabs and all that kinda stuff, you have a good taste in music :D
Robin Brosche i honestly don’t know how difficult it is to sing and play fingerstyle because i’m really bad at singing so i don’t even try. but, i believe that singing and fingerstyle would be a hard thing to do because you’re multitasking- but with practice, it’d become easier :)
Angela Nguyen unless you know the fingerpicking like the back of your hand, I imagine it would be quite a task
If you wanna try fingerstyle with singing, turn a strumming song into fingerstyle by adding a simple right hand pattern, and sing over it like you would have normally. When you get comfortable with this, then go to songs that actually Include both fingerstyle and vocals. Great place to start: Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven. Check out LetsPlayGuitar for tutorial. He's amazing.
super!
I have the same guitar! I just bought it yesterday and started learning today! Let's see if i can get as good as you in a year.
it’s honestly such a good guitar, i have no regrets buying it. it’s still my only acoustic guitar i have- it’s just so good. i’m sure if i can achieve that in a year, anyone can! :) best of luck, Ivan
Hey i noticed how on the first few months. You kept your pinky finger as a support but then when months passed by you aren't. Any tips to get my right hande comfortable :( cus my pinky hurts a lot when i play for hours
I just naturally stopped using my pinky as support for my right hand. But sometimes I still do use it as support but it doesn’t seem to hurt at all. Maybe you can try relaxing your right arm and your hand and that might help ease the tension which causes the pain
Omg thankyouuu♥️
Sorry, I wish i could give you better advice- but that’s just from experience. best of luck with your playing!
2 years video please !!!!!!!!
Keep it up! You are amazing!
B3nDzso [GD] omg thanks for watching!
Heyyyy angelaaaa !!! I really appreciate how you started from nothing and it's really amazing to see the progress :)
I wanted to ask you did u learn guitar thru online classes or offline ?
I know this is pretty late but could you explain /make a video on how you managed to make the beat with your thumb and pick a note at the same time
I feel like the accuracy is very hard to get but maybe I just so it the wrong way.
Awesome video , you really went far in a short time
Keep practicing.......Keep playing 👍
I just got the same guitar and wanted to learn finger style 😂😂 what type of strings do you use light?
What's good about learning is that no one can take it from you
Hii I'm so lucky to stumble upon your vid! I just bought a guitar and I'm planning to teach myself. Where should I start? :)
heyyy!! thanks for commenting. that’s so exciting wow! what i found useful was getting the basic chords down. then i just went straight into trying out simple fingerstyle songs i liked and i worked from there. just any free tabs i found online, i worked with. this might not be the smartest way to learn guitar as you dont know basics like metronome and all that music theory, but it worked for me
@@angelanguyen9309 How do you learn songs with tabs without someone from RUclips teaching T-T
UGH, this is so inspirational. :*) Are you singing along with your playing? (that's my goal, anyway). Thanks for the inspo!
hey thanks for watching! no i don’t sing haha
Hi Angela... I saw your progress... I must say.. you really did well 👍👍
I wanna start with fingerstyle...I know open chords and strumming... C scale as beginner... Pls suggest me few easy songs to start with.. and which artist to follow on RUclips??
holy smoke...what a great progress in such a short time... i'm getting so jealous. I'm struggling and getting frustrated cause my fingers are short and massively crooked, especially my pinkies. My bones just grew that way. So everytime i try to grab a string with my pinky, i'm blocking the other string. Exercises like that spider exercise is just impossible for me :(
just keep at it! My fingers are shorter than the avg person so it was definitely hard at first, but keep trying
Nice progress! I thinking about start to learning as well. What did you do? you take lessons, did you have follwing some plan? or just taking random lessons on youtube (like i was wondering to do hahahaha)
I played guitar for 2 months now, i'm still way so bad😌
Onionic just keep going! i believe in you
Nice, I just wonder if they (people who learn by memorizing songs) learn also theory.
may i ask what courses you took?
We need update!
Amazing
❤️❤️❤️
Wow! Nice progress! Do you have any tutorials for fingerpicking to recommend?
Amazing 👏👏👏
I too want to learn finger style can you please share any references aur lessons that helped you
Really fast progress. How much practice time are you getting in?
i usually play at least 30 mins everyday because i really do enjoy it!
@@angelanguyen9309 that is great progress for that amount of practice in year 1. Well done, you!
Thanks Robert! Really appreciate it
Do you play fingerstyle by ear or just reading tabs?😁
Beauty with guitar 😍
That's so cool...I am 13 and I play acoustic guitar well and am planning on buying one nylon string cuz I love fingerstyle...from where did you learn the songs? I'm inspired by you
Even lefty but I am giving up guitar , I just can’t do it and I have a classical guitar and I can’t find a app for that
Awesome video
noo! don’t give up just yet! how much have you learnt?
What app or where did u learn
hii i loved ur vid :) i had a question. do u have to have a capo in order to start learning chords really well, like when u first started to get back to playing did u use a capo? literally every song i think of needs one
What were the sources you started learning from like tabs , percussion ?
Hey Angela, such an inspiring progress :) did you use any artificial finger plucking nails ? Should we use them as a starter ? I feel more comfortable without them but i have seen lot of guitar players using that. So i am little confused what to do ?
Hlo ... Can someone plz tell me which technique is it she used at 3:41 .. i really want to learn it except i don't know it's name to start with
I am going to get the guitar that you are getting, how is the sound and everything else on it?
well, i don’t have experience with other guitars, but this guitar- for the price is super good. it’s also solid spruce top! The sound is super crisp and loud. I just changed the strings from the ones that came with it to Elixir 13 gauge because those are more fitted to my playing. Other than that, this guitar has been perfect
My own 1 year progress is just 3 months for you.
thats so nice of you to say. i really appreciate you watching, thanks!!
Me too🙄🗿
Hallo, may I know where do you those tabs?
thanks for watching! i got my tabs from ultimateguitar and from authors like angelachibibi or hopexianwalker
Did you take any sort of classes?
Because I also want to learn how to play guitar. So, I was wondering that is it necessary to have a tuitor? BTW you are playing very well.
Hi this is incredible! I’m trying to start a guitar cover channel myself. Any tips on getting more subs and views?
I wished I had proper tips for you, but I am
also learning. I just think posting regular content. Although I never post anything (only once a few months) and maybe that’s why i barely have any subs. But, i’ll try posting more from now on. Best of luck and I’ve subbed to you!
Angela Nguyen thank you so much !
Petition for 3 year progress
Due to the pandamic and how it's forbidden to travel so I'm stuck here without my guitar cause i left it at my grandparents house :) I'm gonna go die now
IM FREAKIN INSPIRED
First did u learn to use pick or directly went to fingerstyle??
I just directly went to fingerstyle because that interested me. I rarely use a pick because I don’t like the feeling of it
