I've been wanting to learn how to play the guitar for some time. I play the piano but I've always been intrigued by the guitar. The thing is I have never actually taken lessons or anything to actually learn. Watching this has inspired me to look into starting, so thank you!

I've played for 23 years now and my fingerpicking is not as good as yours. I see that you incorporated slapping technique at the very early stage. Nice! Slapping is something I have just recently found out. It's so hard learning it now. I made the mistake by not learning from other guitarist and not using metronome. Those are important things to remember to bring along very early on. And learning from others is so easy now.
I quit playing guitar when i was teenager.At that time it's no youtube so it hard for me to learn.Right now my son become a teenager so we learn to play figure style together and i am 50.It's fun.From Thailand

I’ve had a guitar for several decades and never disciplined myself to become good. The years have past and now I’m older with many regrets about not only my lack of skill on the guitar but how I’ve wasted my youth, my years and my life. If you are young... don’t waste time. You only get one life and trust me... it goes by so quickly... Seize the moment before it disappears.
When someone says “wow you have a lot of talent” they aren’t recognizing how much time, effort, and hard work you’ve put into what you do. I’ve played guitar for 6 years, but not as consistently, and as much hard work as you have. Bravo, very inspiring. Thank you for this, and I’m gonna go practice more
I have to agree. I've had the same experience. Someone says " You have a gift!" I am thinking: Gift? I have worked for decades to get even close to the guy that wrote this! I am not talented....I am just stubbornly in love with music!
No, it is a lot of natural talent and ear. yes it take 1000s of hours to train it but it is a talent and a gift. I’ve played guitar and other string for 30 years, 10 professionally, and I couldn’t last 2 secs next to this young maestro.
helps a lot when you're already an experienced musician, given that his channel name is "guus music" and how old he looks, I would bet he knew one or several instruments pretty well before picking up guitar.
You will notice as the years go by (50 years of guitar in my case) that your dexterity increases while the effort even calms down to perfect control, songs you will forget, styles you will morph in and out of, but throughout this whole process, your guitar will always be there ready to convey your inner most emotions, statements, concerns, failures and victories as part and parcel of your life. I started playing guitar around age 11 and I'm now 66. Every time I play I'm still amazed what a great instrument a guitar is and how happy I am that I learned to play it. Your guitar journey is impressive and I have little doubt you will feel the same when you get to be my age. Very Impressive!

Ok I hate using the word "talent" as it cheapens a lot of hard work ("oh wow arnt u talented" No. I worked my ass off to b as good as I am) and yes this guy has put an immense amount of hours into his guitar playing and has worked incredibly hard but damn he is talented af. This is what happens when u get exceptional talent that works exceptionally hard. 👏
Hahah thanks! I understand you don't want to use the word talented. Something I have mixed feelings about it too haha. I guess some people learn things faster, but you still gotta work for it ;)
I agree. I don't hate the word "talent" I feel like a lot of people overuse that work which then disregards the hard work or practice of a person in their craft. But hey! I'm a firm believer that some people are born talented, but I also believe there are people who become talented when they start to put in effort and practice.
I've been playing guitar for 9 months and I thought my progress is so slow because I can only do slapping strum, wrist drum, harmonica and ect.(beginner techniques) but when I saw this video it inspires me because we are almost the same in your first year and you progress this much, thank you so much 🙏
The most inpiration part is you spent 3 to 6 hours per day.Even you didnt felt like bored of trying.The video refelcts how much you enjoyed and played the music.For me its one kind of spark💥🔥
He was practicing for 6hrs a day at some points. I practice about 2hrs a week at most. This guy is incredibly talented but damn he is so hard working too. Mad respect for following his passion so intensely. Very inspiring 👍
I practiced for 4 Hours a day for 1 year and a half. NOT self taught but i had a great teacher. I can play well most rock solos and basic finger style. I took the covid19 and losing my job as an excuse to quit my teacher and then almost quit guitar. (Playing 30 Mins a day what I already know) . But I really felt burn out a little. What really burned me out was the constant learning something new that looked really hard. My teacher was really pushing me hard Now I have 150 hours of csgo in the past 2 weeks but I feel stupid a bit lol
This video was really inspiring. Too often we see "guitar gods" on youtube without seeing the work involved in getting there which can be really demotivating. This video showed that behind every successful guitar player is hard work and dedication. It made me feel like "I can do that" vs "I'm never going to be this good". Thanks for posting!
Well, I did the math. I think the average player practices 1 hour per day (at best) x 365 days per year. At your 6+ hours per day of practice, you’re actually doing about 6 years of practice per year. The way I see it, this video ends up with you having 40.5 years of guitar playing experience. That explains everything! Amazing! I’ve had four lessons so far but feeling very inspired by this video.

As someone who started playing the guitar around 10 years ago and stopped for 8 years between this year and then, this is inspiring me to continue further. If anything good comes out of 2020 it is definitely my improvement on the instrument.
Seeing this really broudened my view on how many different techniques you could learn in a short period of time and how many there are, i personally have been playing the guitar for 8 years now even tho its only been classical so seeing these types of videos make me want to learn more of these types of arrangments and other things. Its hard to do with a tight schedule with music school and stuff but this video inspired me to try to so thank you and have an amazing time practicing.
@@lelandgian2521 I learnt the basics ABCD.. chords and that was it. I went on ahead to learn the intro lick of stairway to heaven and it was super slow. I now can play a lot of FingerStyle songs from RUclips tutorial but I have the most faint knowledge of keys and notes.

I have played guitar every day since buying it, sometimes i practice at least 10 mins, i would love some tips from you!❤️❤️
@@samirmaman7516 you should practice 2-3 hours a day probably. Don't rely on 2 to 3 string songs. The best way to learn a song is to not rely on any crutches, so learn it the way it's played. Also start doing bar chords.
It makes me nostalgic, starting from "Take me to church" my journey has also somewhat been the same. Although inconsistency in the later half made me lazy. This video gives me motivation to get back and start again. Thanks Gus!
It's not about years spent, but hours spent. If he's playing 2000 hours / year, and you're playing 1 hour per day, then it will take you +5 years to reach his 1 year level.
@@mikiegutansky6160 no need just watch some easy guitar tutorial or some song with easy fingerstyle and learn from it is natural if you cant play it well at first cuz i learned without watching free apps just learn the song you want to
Anytime you see someone playing a guitar or piano and they're good, always remember this...The put the work and time in. NOBODY can just hand that to you. They have to earn it. Great video.
I've been playing for 13 years or so. My right hand has always been naturally inclined for fingerstyle, but I never really pursued it. Your videos gave me a kickstart to really dive into it. Travis picking is still on my to do list, but after seeing your Neon cover I finally sat down to learn the picking and got it down a few hours later opening up other JM songs for me to play 'correctly'.
Amazing. It always inspires me to see how far motivated people can get in such a relatively short time. I’ve been playing guitar for 20 years, and I’m nowhere near this level because I’ve never been consistent with practice… It’s definitely encouraging to see what dedication to practice can do for you!
Plus this guy is a genius. Look at his 1 year + 9 month progress. It's incredible. Some people are just genius, and the rest just have to suffer in their mediocrity.
This is very inspiring, and it reminds me of my own learning experience. I am a guitar beginner and I have been playing for about three months. From the first beginning I was struggling with pressing a c chores. And now I can grasp a song within a hour. I have been practicing every day at least a couple hours. Seeing my progress every day is such an encouragement for me to keep practicing and continue becoming a better guitarist

I’m 50 yrs old and am on day 4 of trying to learn guitar. Beyond intimidating to say the least! I’m determined to stick with it though and can’t wait for the day I develop some callouses and can play for more than 5 min without being in severe pain. I love the way you finger pick and really hope to be able to play remotely like that some day! Great job and congrats on your accomplishments... you clearly have a bright future!
Wow. Very inspiring. I learned a little guitar when I was 8, but my parents always thought I wasn’t improving quick enough for their liking. So I stopped trying to learn, even though I still love the guitar. You have inspired me, now 23, to clean off the dust and start learning again on my time. Thank you 😊

I bought a guitar when I came home from Woodstock in 69. I tried and couldn’t learn on my own. Work, family, kids, life all got in my way. The guitar sat in my closet for 50 years. I’m retired, been taking lessons for 2 years now. I SUCK !!! But I keep trying. It’s really difficult to retain it now. But my guitars are right by my bed, last thing at night an usually first thing in the morning. Great video !!! Thats inspiration for us all ! Thanks… 👍
Last year my father bought me a guitar for my birthday. After months practicing i learned how to do some Barre chords and do some simple fingerstyle :)

@@arianablocker7909 Hi ! Well I can now play some songs intros, and uhm one full song. It's still not perfect at all, but to be honest my advice would be to keep playing the songs you like, and if you feel like not progressing fast, it's okay. It takes time :p Now it sounds kinda pretty haha, but yes still have so much to learn !
I could even learn faster, like somedays I'm just not in the mood at all and it make my progression slower, but yea just keep learning and trying again and again as much as you can is the best way ^^
9 already??? Damn... Well my classes takes a lot of time so I'm not playing everyday, but I can play a few songs now. Not perfectly fluent, but at least the sounds are good, and the finger placement is easier and faster. I should play more again, the best is to play everyday that you keep progressing fast fast
I started playing in high school and kept at it through college and so thoroughly enjoyed playing and growing in skill. It has been a long time since I played daily and now, 50 years since I first picked up a guitar, hand injuries pretty much keep me to strumming and light picking. Guus, your progression in skill and the beautiful way you interpret your music choked me up with pride for you and rich memories for me.
I’ve been obsessed and practicing constantly for a month now. I have good sound for a beginner, but I worry that learning on my own will make me plateau rather quickly. I’m experienced in music since I’ve played trumpet since 2008, but it’s a whole different spectrum of hand coordination and how you produce the sound itself.
You're lucky to start of that early dude just play and play trust me youll be good better than most of these guys, i wouldnt say youd be better than me though!! I am still in 8 months progress and id be much better than you in a year and a month

You seemed like to play way too good for a beginner in the first year. I'm just amazed how fast you learnt so much.. must have practiced hours every single day. Your hard work paid off... For me it's been 5 years I bought a cheap quality guitar.. didn't practice enough, sometimes didn't touch the guitar for months..now I just know basic chords, strumming and a little plucking for me to play along while singing.. but now I bought a new guitar, I'm motivated.. now I'm inspired to learn more.

@@cr0w042 don't be ashamed, just pick it up again. There's some great tips in here about how to find motivation, like scouring the charts for new songs and switching up playing styles so you're always challenged with new stuff.

Watching this was something I needed . I started 15 years ago and his story relates to me. Starting from beginner to reach a level you'd never thought you'd make. I always favoured finger style with my biggest inspirations bring Tommy Emmanuel, Mark Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham Its been 6 years since i played guitar full time and come to a change in life. Just started picking it up again and i keep beating myself up on how i feel that i lost a big part of me of what i was like, how i played and was losing patience. Until now seeing this video has given me a inspirational reminder to start all over again and the results will show in due time. Thanks dude 🖐🤟
I was just about to quit playing guitar...yea cause i'm learning fingerstyle and well it all started suck for beginner like me...its hard but after i watched this...bro u played it for 6 year and me just started...so i just "hey let keep on playing and learning" to myself...even u 6 years playing guitar and still learning...soo IMMA KEEP ON PLAYING AND LEARNING LIKE YOU...THANK YOU FOR MOTIVATED ME
I think what really boosted his knowledge was when he started making acoustic arrangements of pop songs, which was basically ear training which is hugely important. Plus the pressure of uploading it to RUclips and potentially facing criticism made him learn the songs perfectly.
Don't expect too much too fast, it's a steady process but after some time you'll get better. You just have to practise - as stupid as it may sound. The first year I had a teacher and after that it was all learning by doing. Record yourself while playing from time to time and even if it doesn't feel like you've made progress, you'll see and hear that your getting better. When I had to learn the first Barré Chords I felt like my finger would break, it sounded horrible and I thought I'd never get it done. But with continuous practise your brain "saves" these handle patterns and after a while your hand does everything automatically :D. Just keep playing and don't be too hard to yourself
It's nice you documented your progress/journey. i consider you one of the best fingerstyle guitarists in terms of playing and arranging. you're "Man in the Mirror" is a favorite. God bless.

Ok I hate using the word "talent" as it cheapens a lot of hard work ("oh wow arnt u talented" No. I worked my ass off to b as good as I am) and yes this guy has put an immense amount of hours into his guitar playing and has worked incredibly hard but damn he is talented af. I play guitar just only 1month and 2 weeks, and i already practice my finger picking, i already using fingerpicking only in the intro of the songs.
I agree. I don't hate the word "talent" I feel like a lot of people overuse that work which then disregards the hard work or practice of a person in their craft. But hey! I'm a firm believer that some people are born talented, but I also believe there are people who become talented when they start to put in effort and practice.

I've been playing guitar for 9 months and I thought my progress is so slow because I can only do slapping strum, wrist drum, harmonica and ect.(beginner techniques) but when I saw this video it inspires me because we are almost the same in your first year and you progress this much, thank you so much 🙏

I practiced for 4 Hours a day for 1 year and a half. NOT self taught but i had a great teacher. I can play well most rock solos and basic finger style. I took the covid19 and losing my job as an excuse to quit my teacher and then almost quit guitar. (Playing 30 Mins a day what I already know) . But I really felt burn out a little. What really burned me out was the constant learning something new that looked really hard. My teacher was really pushing me hard
Now I have 150 hours of csgo in the past 2 weeks but I feel stupid a bit lol
This video was really inspiring. Too often we see "guitar gods" on youtube without seeing the work involved in getting there which can be really demotivating. This video showed that behind every successful guitar player is hard work and dedication. It made me feel like "I can do that" vs "I'm never going to be this good". Thanks for posting!
Whenever I feel like I'm getting nowhere I watch a video like this... And realise I'm only right at the beginning, learning basic chords.
Well, I did the math. I think the average player practices 1 hour per day (at best) x 365 days per year. At your 6+ hours per day of practice, you’re actually doing about 6 years of practice per year. The way I see it, this video ends up with you having 40.5 years of guitar playing experience. That explains everything!

As someone who started playing the guitar around 10 years ago and stopped for 8 years between this year and then, this is inspiring me to continue further. If anything good comes out of 2020 it is definitely my improvement on the instrument.
Seeing this really broudened my view on how many different techniques you could learn in a short period of time and how many there are, i personally have been playing the guitar for 8 years now even tho its only been classical so seeing these types of videos make me want to learn more of these types of arrangments and other things. Its hard to do with a tight schedule with music school and stuff but this video inspired me to try to so thank you and have an amazing time practicing.

@@lelandgian2521 I learnt the basics ABCD.. chords and that was it. I went on ahead to learn the intro lick of stairway to heaven and it was super slow. I now can play a lot of FingerStyle songs from RUclips tutorial but I have the most faint knowledge of keys and notes.

@@samirmaman7516 you should practice 2-3 hours a day probably. Don't rely on 2 to 3 string songs. The best way to learn a song is to not rely on any crutches, so learn it the way it's played. Also start doing bar chords.

It's not about years spent, but hours spent. If he's playing 2000 hours / year, and you're playing 1 hour per day, then it will take you +5 years to reach his 1 year level.

I've been playing for 13 years or so. My right hand has always been naturally inclined for fingerstyle, but I never really pursued it. Your videos gave me a kickstart to really dive into it.
Travis picking is still on my to do list, but after seeing your Neon cover I finally sat down to learn the picking and got it down a few hours later opening up other JM songs for me to play 'correctly'.

This is very inspiring, and it reminds me of my own learning experience. I am a guitar beginner and I have been playing for about three months. From the first beginning I was struggling with pressing a c chores. And now I can grasp a song within a hour. I have been practicing every day at least a couple hours. Seeing my progress every day is such an encouragement for me to keep practicing and continue becoming a better guitarist

I’m 50 yrs old and am on day 4 of trying to learn guitar. Beyond intimidating to say the least! I’m determined to stick with it though and can’t wait for the day I develop some callouses and can play for more than 5 min without being in severe pain. I bought a guitar when I came home from Woodstock in 69. I tried and couldn’t learn on my own. Work, family, kids, life all got in my way. The guitar sat in my closet for 50 years. I’m retired, been taking lessons for 2 years now. I SUCK !!! But I keep trying. It’s really difficult to retain it now. But my guitars are right by my bed, last thing at night an usually first thing in the morning. Great video !!! Thats inspiration for us all ! Thanks… 👍
Last year my father bought me a guitar for my birthday. After months practicing i learned how to do some Barre chords and do some simple fingerstyle :)

I started playing in high school and kept at it through college and so thoroughly enjoyed playing and growing in skill. It has been a long time since I played daily and now, 50 years since I first picked up a guitar, hand injuries pretty much keep me to strumming and light picking. Guus, your progression in skill and the beautiful way you interpret your music choked me up with pride for you and rich memories for me.

Started learning 2 months ago, this is definitely the inspiration I need.
I’ve been obsessed and practicing constantly for a month now. I have good sound for a beginner, but I worry that learning on my own will make me plateau rather quickly. I’m experienced in music since I’ve played trumpet since 2008, but it’s a whole different spectrum of hand coordination and how you produce the sound itself.

@@cr0w042 don't be ashamed, just pick it up again. There's some great tips in here about how to find motivation, like scouring the charts for new songs and switching up playing styles so you're always challenged with new stuff.

@@markd5082 So here is a basic guide on how I have been learning guitar on my own through RUclips videos:
1. learning the main chords first: and some songs using common progressions such as Am-F-C-G, Dm-G-Am, Em-C-G-D (most pop songs uses those chord progressions so learn them, strumming, with time you will be able to switch fingers of your left hand faser)
2. Now you should know all basic chords, some chord progressions and basic strumming, it’s time to learn some fingerpicking: Hallelujah is a great song to start, then you can learn very easy songs such as: The Scientist (ruclips.net/video/WDYsWXUzYo8/видео.html) or You’re the reason (ruclips.net/video/P3X14CMA1uk/видео.html), go check out Let’s play guitar on RUclips, and pick easy songs with slow pace and little to no percussion learn 2-3 « easy songs »
3. Now you should be able to play easy/beginner level fingerstyle songs, it’s time to learn more difficult with percussions: I suggest : Numb, river flows in you (ruclips.net/video/n2at2weR-cI/видео.html), Apologize
4. Let’s take the difficulty to the next level, here is some suggestions for intermediate level: from Gareth Evans, he got some really good tutorial : I learnt Animals, Flashlight, Closer in this order, learning them was an amazing experience
5. Now after learning all those songs with someone to explain, you should be familiar with reading tabs, so I suggest you learn a challenging song for one month, I learnt Unravel on Soviet’s guitar channel ruclips.net/video/5x5GJd-_aDo/видео.html, then I learnt Something just like this (bought the tabs of Eddie van der Meer)
6. Have fun and keep practicing every day 😁

Watching this was something I needed . I started 15 years ago and his story relates to me. Starting from beginner to reach a level you'd never thought you'd make. I always favoured finger style with my biggest inspirations bring Tommy Emmanuel, Mark Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham
Its been 6 years since i played guitar full time and come to a change in life.
Just started picking it up again and i keep beating myself up on how i feel that i lost a big part of me of what i was like, how i played and was losing patience.

I think what really boosted his knowledge was when he started making acoustic arrangements of pop songs, which was basically ear training which is hugely important.
Plus the pressure of uploading it to RUclips and potentially facing criticism made him learn the songs perfectly.
Don't expect too much too fast, it's a steady process but after some time you'll get better. You just have to practise - as stupid as it may sound.
The first year I had a teacher and after that it was all learning by doing. Record yourself while playing from time to time and even if it doesn't feel like you've made progress, you'll see and hear that your getting better.
When I had to learn the first Barré Chords I felt like my finger would break, it sounded horrible and I thought I'd never get it done. But with continuous practise your brain "saves" these handle patterns and after a while your hand does everything automatically :D. Just keep playing and don't be too hard to yourself
