MORE Joanna! We will never get enough Joanna! Where can we get the unabridged version? We need the un-edited version. There should always be an un-edited version!
Yes, please invite Joanna back, though the garage door thing was informative for a minute and then became white noise as I was getting work done… which is fine. Missing Alex.
I would love a 3 hour Vergecast in the studio where everyone brings in their iMac to transform into a display whilst talking about Homebridge, Hoobs and garage doors. And I actually mean it.
Such a packed episode! The deep dive into AI developments and how companies are racing to make their versions of 'ChatGPT-like' features really shows how fast the landscape is shifting.
1:28:45 the alternative is using a switchbot to press the garage door opener in your garage and using a proximity sensor on the garage door to tell you if it’s closed . These all still pipe into HomeKit through matter or homebridge
What I've been waiting for is to have my AI powered home surveillance system to start answering very important questions such as "where did I put my keys/earbuds", "who left the used mug on the table, unwashed", and "where's the TV remote"
1:06:12 it is because after every reboot, shutdown, mac is reindexing files on ssd. I used to shut down my mac year after i bought it. Then when i was researching sleep options i realised that mac is designed to almost never shutdown, only reboot after updates.
Message summaries could be useful for big group chats where you need to catch up on a bunch of mostly pointless texts quickly, but for one on one convos I think you’ll always have to actually see exactly what they wrote.
Power on mac mini is not problem, mac is designed to almost never shut down. Even after system updates mac will reboot automatically. You basically need to press it first time you you connect it to power supply.
I want to buy a Mac mini for my parents who are over 60 and I think it would be perfect for them and easy to use but convincing them to leave it on all the time is going to be tricky… It took me ages to get them used to not turning their tablets and phones off at night 🙈

It’s weird for Perplexity to not be mentioned at all when it’s their product that Google and OpenAI are playing catch-up on, and neither has yet to get as good as Perplexity.
Someone call the EU and tell them to require all desktop computers to put the power on button on the front of the computer. Only Apple would call three days and week.
Hi David , So a you're telling me a company like Apple ,which obsesses over the design and spends so much on R&D couldn't engineer a better placement for the mac mini power button and port for magic mouse and its okay ? Even if you do not turn off your computer, you do need to turn on the mac using the power button sometimes.
@@willwalker474The computer goes to sleep, it uses almost no power. Run your oven for a couple of hours and you’ll use more power than your Mac mini does sleeping for a year.
I love this podcast, been listing for years, but I feel like half the time it’s David complaining about having to do work. Like when he talked about filtering on Yelp. Is that really such a time consuming and hard thing to do? Sure, typing in a sentence with what you want may be easier. But in the same time I can do that, I can also click 3 filters and start looking at the results.
but i understand you guys are laughing about the search question there are 6 plus billion people who don’t speak english as their first language and search like this
I believe what they were pointing out was how specifically it was intentionally worded for SEO and Google, not that it was accidentally worded by someone unfamiliar with English
Don’t want to sound like an a-hole, BUT happy Alex isn’t on the show anymore. I think these 2 have a great chemistry and ideas. Felt like Alex would just agree or chime in with small tidbits. Not really a crucial part of the show… keep it up guys. Awesome show!

Joanna Vergecast is good Vergecast. Keep her coming!
Ditto
I love Joanna Stern. The verge should hire her back.
Joanna, Dieter and Joshua need to come back to The Verge.
STERN IS BACK!! so great to have her on as usual
Release the Garage Door Cut
Yes, please invite Joanna back, though the garage door thing was informative for a minute and then became white noise as I was getting work done… which is fine. Missing Alex.
You should definitely have Joanna more in the future🎉
why I got the feeling that all 3 forgot that they were on a verge podcast ? 😄

Like to petition weekly Joanna Vergecast
Free Joanna! She is too good for the WSJ!
Tell David there is a power outage mode where it will turn itself back on after a cut. Now you never need to press that power button!
Whenever Nilay converts his iMac into a monitor, someone better point a damn camera at it!
I feel pretty pretty ad-blind and conscious of AI content, but the Reddit ads are definitely the best ads at tricking me.
The 20:00 monologue is absolutely brilliant. I really really really enjoyed this episode. 🎉

Joanna needs to be a permanent fixture of the Vergecast. Or start a seperate pod together. Your conversations are hilarious and informative.
i appreciate you all and all you thoughtfully do. The endorsement article should be required reading before people walk into the polls.
@49:05 - Nilay is the guy you date...

I could not emphasize enough how excessively long that garage door conversation was.
Small publishers and bloggers will die with such a model. Only large corporations will benefit.

My solution is clearly the best. In a cupboard I have a garage remote with a switchbot zip tied to it
