RUclips _needs_ their own version of wrapped/rewind I'm shocked they haven't done it already. Also, I'm fairly confident you guys would be at the top of my hours watched/listened love listening every week!
Please let listeners sponsor the lightning round. "This week's lightning round is sponsored by Jake. Jake isn't promoting anything, because he is an auditor for the Sunnyvale City Treasury Department, but he thinks The Verge is "pretty cool and good".
16:00 this is so interesting, because that's the opposite of what I want. I hate when some promoted or algorithmic thing starts blaring at me when I open a streaming service. I hate how slow the apps are because they're all seemingly bogged down loading uncompressed trailers and hi res thumbnails. Plus, a lot of these services choose random, contextless, unrepresentative clips for auto play or don't even have the proper trailer when I want it. None of this makes me want to watch content. It's (in part) why I spend so much more time on RUclips than I do streaming, unless I'm going to a streaming service already knowing what I want to watch (in which case, the same auto playing video annoyance remains).
Anyone who believes that AGI is close is either trying to sell ads, thank you Verge or being disingenuous. Believing anything that a corporation tells you as fact is amazing to me and believing anything that OpenAI says, a company that backtracked on all of their commitments for commerce is hilarious.
as probably the only person under 25 that watches cable regularly, YES please. Every time I open a streaming app it’s usually 15 minutes of adding things to my to watch list and then never actually watching anything. whereas even though 90% of what i get on cable is very trashy action movies, at least im watching *something* instead of curating a spreadsheet for hours on end
I dont love a subscription but the Verge is one of the most useful websites, and also one of the last websites i type in the url on a regular basis. So if it can work for anyone, it can work for you. You do great work. Now how can you save the local internet? Local news is broken even more than national news.
I contemplated getting a subscription, but honestly, it seems a little half-baked, and will probably become a v1.0 or 1.5 conveniently close to 12 months from now (when the subscriptions renew). By then, with an ad free Decoder and Vergecast (with chapters) along with some other new introductions, it may be worth it to me.
Re: AGI, it’s really hard to believe that the thing that no one was able to adequately define, measure, or articulate ended up being a disappointment. Very odd.
subbed to the verge site! its comparable to what i pay for patreons and i can’t help but feel that the quality is simply higher. i’m hoping that all the youtube vids aren’t scaled back so they live inside the paywall, would be cool if subscribers could automatically become youtube members though a promo code or something??
Terrence Tao (the greatest mathemstician of our era) called o1 preview a mediocre but not incompetent grad student. We have the ability to design protein structures (Alphafold) which has saved us some 100 million years of compute. AI can predict weather better than our best systems (Graphcast). Altman isn't lying
"ad free version of the podcast" literally have not listened to a podcast ad in a decade, except the rare people who do interesting things with it like bill burr.
I don't trust the AI tools for facts as far as I can throw them. Every time I ask for technical information, such as TV specs, there is something off in the response. Maybe I'm just bad at writing prompts, but it seems like an easy ask.
Yeah, even in some easy tasks like grammar checking a paragraph it'll often hallucinate, change tense or forget some detail. You have to be right on top of it.
Suggestion to make the lightning round feel more like lightning: put some ominous fast paced background music. Think knowledge game shows such as the weakest link. The silence between the reading of headlines and reaction to the headlines feel a bit slow but at the same time you cannot talk on top of each other for podcast reasons. Solution? Ominous music.
I subscribed the moment I saw the announcement. I want this business to flourish so badly because logging into to verge has been my thing to do every day in my life. I cannot change the mundane yet the interesting part of my life. I disagree with lot of people at the verge but I agree more. I was mad when Joanna left. I liked what Paul brought even if it was totally out of character for rest. I have a love hate with David who has wrong opinions and over arching statements but seeing him do that relentlessly is like that uncle in your family whom you argue but also can't live without because of all the drama. who other would have made me closer to buying Boox something .. you all rock and subscription yearly was worth it. I will pay every year only if you promise to have excellent (even if it is disagreeable) explainers and keep explaining USB and HDMI regularly. I will live my life happily with the mundane excitement sorted ! Cheers.
I primarily watch/listen to The Verge content unless I want a specific review. That said, $50 a year is completely worth it to support your work. I've been a watcher/listener since you drank on the show, and I love that you are still here so many years later. Keep up the good work.
There is no tech story with bitcoin, because the tech is old nervous. The actual story is a larger socioeconomic one that it appears you're not interested in doing homework on
I love this show. But with a reporter on, how can you be this uninformed ? Ai is not equal to lllms . They won't use chatgpt as it is for defence contractors. I don't know why is it hard to understand 😭😭😭😭
I will be forever thankful to Mrs. (Scarlett) for her amazing performance and dedication, she is just too good at trading, and she has proven to me her skills in trading. Thanks very much, Mrs (Scarlett )
bitcoins value is that it tracks to a dollar, its the best way to track true inflation since it started. and being a pointer to you own 100k or whatever its worth as we devalue the dollar which makes bitcoin more valuable, thats more than enough for me
@ of course, I didn’t say otherwise. In fact in today’s times we live in, everyone should be skeptical. What I was saying is that I have heard multiple technology podcasts and I haven’t seen anyone or folks in any other platform being so condescending on people who run these businesses and work inside the most consequential technology like in this particular episode

Both of you powering through a podcast from home while sick is so relatable
The only winner here is NVIDIA.
Nilay said that him and David don’t do ad reads, but isn’t David reading an ad about 40 seconds before that?

Altman isn't lying
It seems like the audio is messed up on this episode. Chapters are also wayyyy offfff!!
David just cuts out 6:00
RUclips Music Recap 2024: Vergecast is no.1 podcast for me.
My top 3
1. WAN Show
2. Vergecast
3. Waveform
I think I have a mild interest in this technology thing.
"ad free version of the podcast" literally have not listened to a podcast ad in a decade, except the rare people who do interesting things with it like bill burr.
Love this Episode glad I came on to listen,Also love when you Guy's have different people.Great Work.💯✌️
Ppl that want to turn on their tv but not have to choose what to watch is why we can't have nice things

49:10 hell yeah David, spot on
I watch good guy bad guy it's a great show.
Now that I’m subbed, does that mean that I’ve sponsored the lightning round?
Long live the verge
I feel like we don't usually see David's entertainment center. Did he rearrange things to fit a christmas tree in there?
Josh Topolsky reunion!
If you have a family account in Spotify and another device, you can use a different account than your own so your Spotify wrapped is kid stuff free
cable is like $200 a month I have a hard time believing this was a discounted rate 😂
Where do you live that it's that expensive? In Canada I got 1Gb/s internet and a premium pick any 20 channels + base channels for $70 CAD (≈ $50 USD).

billions of defintions for agi make the term pretty useless anyway
I wish I even had a budget phone.😢😢😢

Thought they were putting in Barrou and Reo tbh
Where’s Alex?

Tech used to be fun. Now it’s just the harbinger of doom and gloom.
Mason jar water bros riseup
I will subscribe when there is a tier with no ads on the site or podcast. Please make it happen 🙏
So you guys are using Twitter model 😂 with subscription model?!
The new Vergecast dropped and nobody cares
Yeah, I fast-forwarded the hell past that whole first 15 minutes. These dudes are so arrogant.
@bgkarma that's part of the fun, I don't take them as seriously as they do.
@@bgkarma Then... why are you here? Just to whine about them? There's an ocean of tech news podcasters out there.
@@aloutsisomg thisssss like move on the verge is fun and campy
lmao i do i need this niche rant which I don’t talk to anyone about but i want to listen someone talk and i have dishes to do
You do a PDF of the US only magazine, and I'll do money. 😂
Weird. Dropped first on youtube than in overcast? 🤔
Just FYI Nilay, all the royalties from R. Kelly's music goes to his victims so you SHOULD be bumping Remix to Ignition
I didn’t know this! I also feel bad for Becky now
. . . That's not what "humbling" means.
and it's not coming
Thanks for asking but I will not be paying you at this time.
I love this show. But with a reporter on, how can you be this uninformed ? Ai is not equal to lllms . They won't use chatgpt as it is for defence contractors. I don't know why is it hard to understand 😭😭😭😭
I really really want to subscribe, don’t have enough money right now but will definitely subscribe once I get a new job ASAP
Add free podcast I can sub to in overcast and you can have my money.
Lightning round has a sponsor and nobody cares
I will be forever thankful to Mrs. (Scarlett) for her amazing performance and dedication, she is just too good at trading, and she has proven to me her skills in trading. Thanks very much, Mrs (Scarlett )
This must be trading with the coach (Scarlett)
She's a licensed broker in the state
Yes, that's her name, Mrs Scarlett . Many people recommended her highly about her, I'm just starting with her from India living in Australia 🇦🇺
I'm surprised that this name is being mentioned here, I stumbled upon one of her client's testimonies on CNBC news last week...
Trader (Scarlett ) strategy has normalised winning trades for me also and it's a huge milestone for me looking back to how it all started
No it’s not
I didn’t know there was a website?
what ?
the sub service is what it is but i found the give us some leeway/time/turns out stuff is hard parts insulting
Your new subscription idea is absolutely stupid and a waste of money, and I hope it fails
Dwelling on Language Models' failure modes is *really* selling them short
bitcoins value is that it tracks to a dollar, its the best way to track true inflation since it started. and being a pointer to you own 100k or whatever its worth as we devalue the dollar which makes bitcoin more valuable, thats more than enough for me
Bye.
So much begging for money.
yawn
Soo early wow
A bunch of entitled so called tech journalists of a once great media who thinks they know better than Sam Altman, Satya, Mustafa and co😂 😂
You know I’ve interviewed almost all of them right
@ yes, I used to love your iPhone reviews though
I wasn’t speaking of you specifically here, just the tone of this particular podcast
isn't that literally their job to be skeptical?
