I use this lens on my recent video and I'm SO HAPPY! Used to have the sigma 16 and 30 for the last year and just made the change recently....best thing I have ever done! I absolutely hate changing lens and noticed that held me from shooting! 18-105: one lens for everything!
I would only buy this one or the PZ 18-200mm lens for parallax effect. The steady zoom is consistent and the zoom range is great for amplifying the parallax effect with Sony a7iv in crop mode.
Thanks for the post. Well articulated points. I have both the Sony a6400 and the SELP18105 lens as well. From a build quality standpoint, no question this is solid. The "disadvantage" as with many lenses of this size is its footprint - it's like holding a can of soda and it weighs just as heavy (actually heavier). I would agree this is a good all-around lens and a good solution if you want to use/carry only one lens. I agree with all the 5 reasons you stated. But of course, no lens is perfect. There are at least two "annoyances" at the top of my list: 1. The minimum focusing distance. I know this is not a macro lens but this lens' minimum focusing distance makes it challenging for some use cases. Luckily those are few and far between. 2. The images and video footage could be "soft" at times. Granted, I'd still say what I can capture with this lens is generally better than the pancake kit lens. Gotta take the good with the bad, right? Question for you - do you use the Clear Image Zoom feature of the a6400? With it and this lens, that pretty much gives you double the reach - up to 210mm! To the naked eye, it seems the algorithm used with this feature has no noticeable degradation in image quality. If you do use it, please let me know what you think. Cheers.
Thanks, man!!! Thanks for pointing out the “annoyances” too. Well noted. But yeah, gotta take the good with the bad. I haven’t actually tried using the Clear Image Zoom. Will do that and see if it’s worth reviewing. Nonetheless, thanks for the tip! Appreciate it.
I had to come back here and watch this again. Lately I've been feeling like I can do so much with just two lenses... my Samyang 12mm f2.0 and my Sony 35mm F1.8. I'm shooting a documentary now, and so far, those two lenses have been it, and I haven't felt like I need anything else at all. They both work great on my Crane M2, so that's a big plus for me as well, and I think that, for filmmaking, I don't really need much more, but.... for more flexibility, and for having fun, and for just running around, and maybe if I shot weddings, or events like that, THEN maybe this, or the Tamron 17-70 would be an absolute necessity. One of them... Of course, when I'm just running around having fun, I just use my 16-50 kit lens, and it looks good to me, but I know those other two zooms are so much better and more flexible... Hmm... #LensConversations lol

Just got my Sony A6400 with kit lens 16-50mm. I was thinking of getting a primary lens. Which do you recommend? Sigma 16mm or Sony 18-105mm? I am a beginner. TIA brother!
Hi, Cholo. I wanted to ask for what purpose exactly but as I think thru your “primary lens”, I’d clearly recommend the 18-105. You get to have a wide (maybe not so, but pretty much useful enough) and telephoto in one. That focal range is gold. Also, stabilized lens is like a must for A6400 especially if you don’t have a gimbal. Only downside is its lowlight performance. Other than that, for “primary lens” a wide range range of focal length is an advantage.
If you’re not doing much videography then, choose the Sigma. Very good in low light. Check out 30mm as well. That might do you better. Not too wide, not too tight. I also have a video about it, you can check it out. Hope it helps!

To be honest, I got rid of the 18-105 when Tamron released the 17-70. That is the better choice overall. You might want to check that out. And since the Sigma Trio is also something else, I compared it to the Tamron 17-70. ruclips.net/video/gpSOcSQmx0M/видео.html
@@DanboxingPH okay thanks for the honest suggestion! Im planning on buying zv-e10 and still considering which lens to go on. Also wondering whether the kitlens 16-50mm is good for a start? Can do beautiful cinematic/like commercial food shoot etc?
I never tried the 16-50. Hahaha can’t speak much about it. But in my opinion, if you’re really looking at a particular lens, save up for it. Don’t settle for anything less. It will cost you more :)
whatzuuupp! yes this lens is an all rounder, im an Event videographer here in Rome Italy and ive been using this lens on my A7riii, a6500 and a6400 for how many years! Highly reco guys!
I have a Sony SELP 18-105 G lens. Lately when I shake it I hear a rattling sound from inside the lens. This happens whether the lens is on or off the camera. I have not dropped it, or to my knowledge knocked it against anything. Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening? Many Thanks. Roger.
Oh man, sadly no idea about that. I no longer have my 18-105 to double check. But with my current Tamron 17-70, it also has that rattling sound inside. In my research, people say that it’s because of the VC. The in-lens stabilization. So, maybe, the same goes for the 18-105 since it has in-lens stabilization too?
18-105 anytime of the day! Larger aperture, constant aperture at all focal lengths, etc. If I ever need such longer focal range, I’d buy a more decent telephoto lens :)
I’ve loved this lens. I have named it Excalibur. Upon delivery of the new Tamron 17-70 2.8 w/VC, I’ll sell my 18-105. I can’t see ever using this again with that in my bag. With the Sigma 100-400 DG DN OS, I’ll just take two lenses for most outings.
I've been using this lens and it's very robust and useful. Other than the weight I don't have an issue with it. The constant aperture is sufficient. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Super good to hear that! Thank you very much. Regarding the new Sigma, if given the chance, yeah, why not. I would love to review that. Stay tuned!
I think tamrons new 17-70mm 2.8 made sonys 18-105 obsolete. Price is similar (650 sonys- tammys 800usd) Performance of this new lens is comparable to sonys 16-55mm 2.8 ... but that one costs 1400usd
@@navivillanueva9628 ayun! Ah oo naman! Okay na okay ito. Both for photography and videography. Only downside in my opinion is the f4 max aperture. Not so good in lowlight. 👌🏽 Other than that, sobrang okay nito.
It's not a general must-have for the camera. The camera is actually not the specific thing that decides whether this is a good lens for you. For that decision only WHAT and HOW you shoot is important. For example I only do portraits. This lens is useless for me. For many others as well. Oh and you did not speak about image quality, seems that the build quality is more important for you, which I find strange. powerzoom for me is absolutely rather a minus feature, I'd rather like mechanical zoom.

Hello! I also have a video reviewing the Tamron 17-70. Here’s the link ruclips.net/video/eBJ8rep8TVY/видео.html
In my opinion, I’d go for the Tamron due to the bigger aperture. :)
Wooh! Naguguluhan na ako sa bibilhin ko dahil sa review mo sir. Hahaha Btw, sir may tutorial ka ng color grading dito sa mga clips mo dito?
Hahaha in that case, this might help you, bro - ruclips.net/video/gESxjJy4i10/видео.html (Top Lenses for Sony APS-C cameras).
I haven’t released my color grading tutorial yet. Maybe soon. Stay tuned :)
Love your videos bro, but could you please brighten up your overall video? I'm sure that this is your style and you are intentional about it, but it seems a bit dark. Thanks.
Thanks for the tip :)
Sir, is this lens good for food product videography and food photography?
Good for everything with a decent lightin setup :)
@@DanboxingPH Okay thanks! From ur opinion & experience, which one is better? Between 18-105mm or sigma 16mm f1.4 / sigma 30mm f1.4? Do u have video comparing between these lens?
To be honest, I got rid of the 18-105 when Tamron released the 17-70. That is the better choice overall. You might want to check that out.
And since the Sigma Trio is also something else, I compared it to the Tamron 17-70.

It will cost you more :)
can u make a tutorial video for your colour grading skills
Soon, bro 🔥
@@DanboxingPH Okay bro.. we'll be waiting 😍
Great video and nice channel! Keep safe there in Phillipines! peace from Italy
Thank you! ✌🏽
Amazing ❤️ Have you used presets in your photos?
Yes. A preset I just made in Lightroom.
@@DanboxingPH Thanks for response bro. ❤️ And..can u shr plz.
Omgg these shots on a6400 only?? Or with some filters ?? Plzz tell me bro
Yes! Post processed in Lightroom (photo) and LumaFusion (video). Will try to make a video showing I do color grading and stuff :)
@@DanboxingPH ohh okk bro ..thank you
This or 30mm sigma for all use?
For all use, Sony 18-105. 👌🏽
whatzuuupp! yes this lens is an all rounder, im an Event videographer here in Rome Italy and ive been using this lens on my A7riii, a6500 and a6400 for how many years! Highly reco guys!
Can’t agree more!!
But now available Tamron 17-70 2.8 which one buy
I made a video comparing the two - ruclips.net/video/Lp71c24Gd7c/видео.html
Bro do you live in the US or canada?
I live in the Philippines hahaha
@@DanboxingPH my bad!😅 Actually i wanted to ask that you displayed a photo of the sigma 16mm f1.4 and it was priced at 419$ so is it usd or cad?
No worries, man! Hahaha
It’s USD :)
Sir would you choose 18-200mm or 18-105mm.which one would be good choice ?Please help me sir 😫
Do you that one would miss the 105 focal length when shifting to the Tamron 17-70mm?
@@abdulmoiz6256
You can always crop in with 24mp and the sharpness of this lens. I couldn’t always do that with my 18-105.
Great review thank you!!
Thank you!
thank you so much for sharing this video bro! God bless you! 🔥👍🏻😊
Welcome, Jaylli!
Thanks for watching!
Hallo from indoensian Thank for review . I Like Your videos❤
Thank you, Untung!
I've been using this lens and it's very robust and useful. Other than the weight I don't have an issue with it.
The constant aperture is sufficient. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
awesome vid!
Thank you! 💯
Solid ng review neto. Sir ok kaya to sa a6000?
Thank you! I haven’t tried but I feel like it’s going to work well too with the A6000.
@hobitoysTV Ofcourse! If you want to see a6000 + 18-105mm G lens. Check my instagram wtfitsjoshu 😄
Did anyone used this lens for photos
I did!
Thank you! I will be buying one :D
I’m super excited for you!!!!! 💯
Hello sir. the arthur R of the Philippines. pa review naman ng sigma 2.8 18-50 dc dn. thanks Godbless
Wow! Super good to hear that! Thank you very much.
Regarding the new Sigma, if given the chance, yeah, why not. I would love to review that. Stay tuned!
Parang mabbudol ako ah 😭 what about 18-135mm lens?
Go go go!
Never ko na try yang 18-135 e. Fan ako ng constant aperture. Hehe
@@DanboxingPH me too!!!! It's just so expensive. Is this a great lens for both photo & video?
YES for both photo and video!
nice Information
I think tamrons new 17-70mm 2.8 made sonys 18-105 obsolete. Price is similar (650 sonys- tammys 800usd) Performance of this new lens is comparable to sonys 16-55mm 2.8 ... but that one costs 1400usd
Was able to use the new Tamron yesterday! Will make a video for my thoughts about it :)
@@DanboxingPH sweet!
Yes but the range on the sony......
@@navivillanueva9628 ayun! Ah oo naman! Okay na okay ito. Both for photography and videography. Only downside in my opinion is the f4 max aperture. Not so good in lowlight. 👌🏽
Other than that, sobrang okay nito.
@@DanboxingPH salamat sa tip bro! Ill go get this lens today.
Enjoy!!! 🔥
thank you
Thanks bro
Awesome review !
Thank you! 💯
For general purposes this is enough, bokeh is overrated and f4 is good enough. Nice review
Agree agree!
Thank you! 💯
salamat broski subscribed
Salamat ng madami 💯🔥👌🏽
Yupppp
Choatic autofocus, very random. When you zoom on girl - focus is breathing. Look as smartphone picture.
sub ✔ 😊 thoughts on upcoming tamron 17 70 2.8
Thank you! Appreciate it.
Looking forward to get my hands on that particular lens too. Stay tuned 💯😊
I’ve pre-ordered the 17-70.
Rumor it ships 1/14/21.
Game changer.
I am pre ordering the tamron tonight this will complete my glass collection for my 6400
Super excited about this too!
Happy for you! 💯👌🏽
Lol what a douchebag
