@@Milan-cf1xebesides the 18-105, I have the Sigma Trio(16/30/56). Those are really nice since they're all F1.4. Out of the three I'd say I use the 30mm the most. For product video stuff I also use the 60mm by 7artisans. When it comes to shooting stuff outdoors I mostly use the 18-105 and also the 16mm for a little wider view. And the 16mm is also nice, when I use my camera as a webcam for zoom calls or online streaming.
I bought this lens. I like it very much. The power zoom is terrific. I use my sony remote to zoom when it's on a gimbal and it stayed super smooth and steady zooming in for some long panning shots I did recently. I have my Sigma 16mm and a sony 35mm 1.8 for low-light situations and portraits. It's the perfect lens for where I am skill-wise and for my purposes. Super video. I just bought this lens, because of your review. Can't wait! I have an older Sony A7R which I love its lightness and size, mostly for microscopy (still images/ video of pond and saltwater microbes via a stereo microscope). Thank you for the time and effort you put into your reviews. 👍
I am glad the video was beneficial to you! Remember the that A7R is a Full Frame sensor and this lens is for APS-C (Crop Frame Sensor) camera bodies. This means that you will get vignetting (dark areas around the edge of your picture). Your camera may have the option to switch to Super 35 mode (cropped mode) but it may come with some limitations! Thanks for taking the time to watch and support the channel!👍🏾
Really liked how you specified the types of shots the lens is great for. Music videos, etc.. Great info perfect for novices like me who don't understand the lens specs. Thanks for your service mate
I've been using the 16-50 kit lens, along with the 35mm f1.8 Sony lens, and both have been really good for me. I know people dog that kit lens, but it works well if you shoot well, but... I like this 18-105 lens, and am thinking of getting it, but I don't know. That will pretty much retire my kit lens, and so..... I'm thinking of maybe grabbing an SLR magic 75mm CINE lens instead. Cheaper way to go, and that way I'll be covered from 16-75, or 24-110 (approx), because I'm also using the a6400... My 35mm covers me in low light, and is a great lens... but for some reason... I keep coming back to the 18-105. Maybe because everybody loves it so much. Cool videos, love "don't overthink it". I need to take that advice now and choose one of these lenses. ;)
I would definitely pull the trigger on the 18-105! You really can’t go WRONG with it! 🤷🏽♂️ Thanks for watching and superhero channel! I greatly appreciate it! 🙏🏽 😊
I’m glad this video was helpful to you! This is great to know being that this is the reason I started this channel! 😊 Thanks for taking the time to watch, comment and support the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
Great video. 100% agree. Last year the a6400 with the 18-105 was my sports highlight video workhorse. Decided to jump to full frame and after bouncing through multiple camera systems and losing a ton of money I’ve got an a6600 with this lens in route once again. Can’t wait to get back to shooting sports with that combo soon.
I agree with you 100% These APS-C cameras are pretty powerful! Sure the Full Frame has some capabilities and features that these smaller bodies don't have but for MOST people, these are MORE than enough! Thanks for telling us how your journey has been! I love to hear people's real world experience in the camera world! Thanks for taking the time to watch, comment and support the channel! 👍
I'm bidding on a a6400 and this lens right now, mainly I'm interested in the 6400 for the flip screen and integrated flash which is super handy, kinda a combo of the 6k & 6600.
Thanks for the positive feedback and thanks for taking the time to watch! Yes this lens does work with the Sony A7Siii. You will have to put the camera into super 35 crop mode though. This is going to take your quality down a bit though! I hope this helps! 👍
That's the question all of us ask ourselves - "why am I standing out here in the woods?".😀 The second question is: should I buy the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 with Vibration Compensation if I already have the Sony 18-105mm f/4 with OSS? Thanks for the post. Excellent work!
LoL! Right! I think it all depends. If you need more light then yes. If you need to use it on a gimbal then.. maybe not. :) Thanks for supporting the channel! :)
I will definitely consider doing that as it may be helpful to many others as well! There’s a lot this little camera 📷 can do! 🤩 Thanks again for your feedback and support of the channel! 🙏🏽 😊

I totally understand your struggle! I can tell you (because I was the same way) the ONLY way to gain confidence is to just record a video, put it out and consistently post. That's it! Aww thank you so much 🙏 i am seriously looking on the first topic i am going to film and no matter how low quality it will look i am gonna post. I am not worried about negative people but more about quality of my work. But i guess i should just start. Thank you so much for the encouragement ❤️
@@tannugupta3293 Sound advice from Purposed Lens. I just started not too long ago - just out of curiosity and um, boredom. Admittedly very much a novice both in RUclips and in "film making". All I really wanted was to create better vacation footage - so I'll get there either by better gear or through better skills. 😀 Funny enough - the video that I did with the lowest quality and the least effort is my most viewed video. As per advice, just try it out. Good luck and enjoy.
This lens is specifically made for aps-c cameras! 📷 You will want to go with a FE (Full Frame E-mount) lens like the 24-105 F4! This lens WILL work with a full frame camera but you will need to put your camera in Super35 mode! (you lose resolution on this mode) I hope this helps! Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊

I already own the 18-105 zoom lens coupled with my Sony a6500 but I recently bought the Sony a7iv coupled with the Sony 20/f1.8 prime I don't know if I should get the Sony 24-105 for the a7iv or just use the apsc lens and sacrifice my megapixels. The 18-105 is very vibrant stunning photos excellent videos by the way.
It depends on what your needs are. 🤷🏽♂️ Certainly if you have an A7ii you want to take full advantage of it. It’s really up to you and what your goals are with it. I hope this help! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia The 24-105 price is not justified if I own the 18-105 because video quality would not be affected and taking 10 megapixels photos in my case with a zoom lens usually require little or no crop so I would basically get the same result as the 24-105 with the exception of 27mm - 157mm instead of 24-105mm so I lose 23 megapixels 3mm but I gain 52.7mm worth of zoom in apsc/ super35 mode save $1400 and still carry around a lens weighing 181g less than the 24-105 this is a hard decision.
Whats this like for still images please? Ive ordered it to replace my 16-50 kit lens, would i be better with the 18-135 lens? Was also looking at the Sigma 18-50. I've currently got Sony 16mm and Sigma 60mm lenses for this range, using A6400.
When it comes to lenses "BETTER" is subjective and it depends on the use case and how it fulfills the need that you have. The 18-105F4 is a sharper lens than the kit lens and offers a great focal range. I would say rent the lenses in question then make your decision based on that. There are A LOT of reviews that look at sharpness charts and all kinds of TECHNICAL aspects however, those test may not (and often don't) translate to REAL WORLD use. I hope this helps! Thanks for taking the time to watch!👍🏾
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia thank you for the reply, if it's sharper than the kit lens I'll keep it when it arrives. I don't really like to rent things, especially at this price range but think you this is a good option for more expensive lenses.
That really all depends on what you will be using them for? They both are great lenses! I love the LOOK of the Sony 18-105F4 personally. I use it OFTEN on my FX30 and it gives me GREAT colors and isn't harsh and over sharp! The Tamron would yield you more light in lower light situations so again, it all depends on HOW you will be using it. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!👍🏾
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia thanks lot sir. The delima is in future I might move to full frame so is it worth getting this lens or what to do am not getting. Should I get a full frame lens ?
@@ravicholachagudda5912 Honestly, it doesn't matter if you switch to full frame in the future or not. I am a FIRM believer of growing your skills OVER worrying about gear! Think about the camera you have NOW and how to get BETTER with what you ALREADY HAVE! I hope this helps!
Certainly! APS-C is perfect for shooting wildlife because of the crop factor! Most cameras nowadays are more than capable of shooting most things! It really just comes down to features! I hope this helps! 😊 Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
This is not a low light lens by any means. You will need to add light in order to get the best performance from this lens. In addition, setting up your autofocus correctly will help improve your results as well! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
Wanted to ask but is this lens comparable or better than the tamron 17-70 f2.8 because I am actually hesitating between these two choices. Can anyone give me a clear idea thanks!
The Tamron17-70 F2.8 is a great lens! It will be good for low light because it has a 2.8 aperture! The only things this lens may not work on is a gimbal. This is because there's a tube that extends out of the lens and can throw the balance of the gimbal off. They are both great lenses, it really depends on where you will be using it the most! I would recommend renting both to see which one will fit your needs! I hope this helps! Thanks for commenting, watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
It really depends on the type of vlogs you will be doing! The Sigma is one focal length (it doesn’t zoom) but is EXCELLENT in low light situations! The 18-105 has a RANGE of focal lengths but isn’t super great in very low light situations! If you don’t have a camera yet, I would suggest using your cell phone to vlog first! This will tell you HOW you will be using your camera, then you will be able to make an informed decision! I hope this helps! 😊 Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
I just ordered a Sony a6400 and am wondering which lenses to buy for low light, night photography and video, I ordered mine with the kit "pancake" lens any help would be greatly appreciated
Congratulations on your new purchase! 😊 If you will be shooting in low light 💡, consider the sigma line of prime lenses! The Sigma 30mm 1.4, Sigma 56mm 1.4 and the Sigma 16mm 1.4! All of these lenses will give you GREAT low light performance! 👍🏾 I recently did a review on the Sigma 56mm 1.4! You should check it out! I hope this helps! Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
It really all depends .🤷🏽♂️ Will you be shooting during the day? How close will you be to the action? The biggest thing about this lens will be your reach (focal length) and your ability to shoot in low light 💡 while using a fast shutter speed to freeze 🥶 the action! Since this lens is F4 you may struggle with low light setting while freezing action. I would look for some that’s at least F2.8 with at least 200mm! I hope this helps! 😃 Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽
I'm not sure I fully follow your question. If you are asking if the lens has some distortion the answer is yes. When you are taking photos, most Photo editors will have lens corrections built in which will take care of that for you. I hope this helps. :) Thanks for taking the time to watch and support the channel! 👍
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia Greetings, I asked the question wrong, I meant that the "Lens Compensation" menu does not allow to activate the distortion correction, it has it deactivated.- However, the compensation of shadows and chromatic aberrations does allow it. I already consulted it in Sony: in the list of compatible lenses, the information regarding the 18-105 f4 is as follows: The [Comp. Lens: Distortion] will be set to "Auto". Of course, I have given you a subscription. Thanks a lot. 😎 I invite you to subscribe to my channel.
So, the music video you referenced. Did you use this lense for the video shot?!?!? Also, how did you get that perfect "look"? Was that strickly your own custom color coding or is there a specific preset that gave that effect? Or was it a combination? Or was it a trade secret and if you tell me you'd have to kill me?
On this video I “mainly used” the 18-105. All the scenes I showed were using the 18-105. I believe I used PP4 Picture Profile 4 when shooting this video. I blocked off some of the windows 🪟 in the home and used a combination of lights, diffusion and reflectors. The final “look” was achieved using Lumitri Color Panel within Adobe Premier Pro. I hope this sheds some light 💡on the workflow! Thanks for supporting the channel! 👍🏾
Since the A7iii is a full frame sensor (35mm), putting a crop frame lens on it would cause then picture to have major vignetting (the corners will be very dark) and unrecoverable. The solution would be to put your A7iii into (super 35 aps-c crop mode). This causes the A7iii to only use a portion of the sensor to accommodate the 18-105f4 lens. There is also a significant quality drop when using super 35 mode as well. So yes, this lens can be used on the A7iii but at a cost of quality! I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
Yes it will “work”, however this lens is specifically made for aps-c camera bodies! The Sony A7ii is a full frame 35mm sensor camera! This means that you will have to put the camera into “crop mode” in order to not get vignetting on your photos/video. Thanks for supporting the channel! 👍🏾
Yes this will work with the A7iii, however since thebA7iii is full frame, the camera will have to be put into super 35 mode to use the lens without a vignette! I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽
It's a great lens! It's NOT a low light beast however, it has some REALLY great colors and looks GREAT on the Sony FX30! Thanks for taking the time to watch and support the channel!👍🏾
Very impressive product and your video is also great. When you did the light test and discussing the F4 low light limitations, did you turn one light on and off? - When you turned it (them) back on, your face was perfectly lit and a look I would like to emulate. Can I ask what light(s) were you using please? - Thanks, Peter.
So I was using my Godox SL60W with a soft box as my main Key light. 💡 I then flagged off part of the light so that it only falls where I want it. I also used a grid with my Godox to help keep the light focused where I wanted and to prevent spill. If you look within the description below the video, I have a list of the gear that was used in the video. I hope this helps. 😊 Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
This lens was perfect when I photographed a ski competition especially when they were approaching the finish line. Because when the skiers got closer to the finish line, my 70-350m was way to much zoom. Because I wanted to be able to take the final sprint of 100m and get some close up pictures. 18-100m One solution was to have a close up lens on one camera 18-55m And zoom lens 70-350m on another camera for 70-100m. Which was impractical and I lost some good pic.
Great use of the focal lengths you had available to you!👍🏾 What shutter speed did you use to capture them? Did you give them any blur or did you freeze the action?🤔
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia I love the aspect of getting my target in freeze in action with some minor snow flying around from when they kick up snow with their skis, So about 1/1000 at far distant and 1/500 when they start to slow down.

@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia Great thank you , it's a great middle sweet spot of a lens which I will probably dress up as Santa and buy myself:) have a good one Sir!
The lens will definitely work! However without knowing your setup it difficult to say what other equipment (lighting) you may need to be successful! In this case you may want to look at the sigma 16mm 1.4! This lens will give you a lot more room to work with in LOW LIGHT! 💡 I currently use the Sigma 16mm in my RUclips more current videos! I hope this helps! 👍🏾
Yes! This lens can be used however, this is an APS-C lens which means it's MADE for APS-C but will work on Full Frame. Full Frame Sony lenses are labeled "FE" for full frame E mount. Since APS-C lenses are built for APS-C cameras, there will be vignetting (looks like your are looking at the photo through a barrel). Think James bond. :) on each photo if you don't put the A7II into "Super 35 Mode". Super 35 mode crops in on the sensor so that you don't see the vignetting on your photos. You may want to download the manual for your camera to see what the final resolution of the photo will be. I know that it's significantly less that if the lens were on an APS-C body. I hope this helps! Thanks for taking the time to watch and support the channel! 😁
“Softness” is relative to what one is used to seeing. 🤷🏽♂️ It’s not extremely sharp like the Sigma lenses on aps-c or full frame, but I wouldn’t call it “soft”. 🤷🏽♂️ I have shot head shots and portraits with this lens! Any sharpness that may be lacking (in someone’s opinion) can be added in post through Photoshop or Premier. I hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
No. This lens is for APSC cameras. It CAN be used on a full frame came as long as it supports "Super 35 mode". which crops in on the sensor. Typically this setting will degrade the quality of your photos since the image is being cropped into. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Typically when getting the correct exposure, it’s best to set up your main key light 💡FIRST, then add in your fill lights and hair light! I hope this helps! Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽
Hey man, can I get your opinion. I'm about to get an A6400 and a lens.. but I'm not sure whether to get the Sony f4 18-105mm or a prime lens. I'm veeerrry new to photography and videography. But I noticed that although the 18-105mm is versatile, the photos are not as sharp and as flattering as a prime lens? Thanks in advanced.
Congratulations on starting out your photography journey! 😁 The first question I would ask you is what will you be shooting? Figuring out what you will be shooting will help you determine what lens will fit your needs! Next question is, why do you need a VERY sharp lens? Will you be publishing to magazines, or will you be posting content on Instagram and social media? 🤔 My advice would be to buy the A6400 and get the 18-105 F4! Yes I agree! This has A LOT to do with social media! Since video was introduced, it's a VERY effective tool to communicate to people! The old saying is "a picture is worth 1000 words" now imagine how valuable that makes a moving picture? I would like to do more photo type content however, people just aren't as interested. Thanks for that feedback and thanks for watching! 👍🏾
Thanks for supporting the channel. 🙏🏽 Typically when shooting video we want to follow the 180 degree shutter rule! This simply means that we want our shutter to be DOUBLE what our FPS (Frames Per Second) is. This will give us a more “natural” look when shooting at each shutter speed. Since my fps was at 24fps, double that in shutter speed would be 1/48! Since most cameras 📷 won’t let you shoot at 1/48 shutter speed, we round up to the closest one, 1/50! I hope this brings some clarity to the 1/50 shutter speed! Thanks for supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
This lens is literally a shit. The image is too soft, only autofocus and no manual focus, the f4 in 24-105 on full frame is another story but f4 on apsc is too much limiting, it starts from 27 mm, for photos is unuseless because is not sharp enough.. Camon.. but you test the lens before do a video? Its one of the worst lens produced by Sony even if they put the G mark on it. The only good thing is the internal zoom. And that's it
I believe that you have a right to your own opinion, however there are a few issues that are incorrect in your opinion. This lens is in fact capable of being manually focused, this setting is changed within the camera. Sharpness is subjective (based on opinion). In my opinion it's pretty sharp! :) In addition my paying clients have been happy with the results of the 18-105 F4 on MULTIPLE occasions. :) If you would like, I can help you get the most our of your 18-105! Please direct me to your videos and I would gladly take some time to help you get it sorted out. :) I wish you the best! :)

Just ordered this to try for run-and-gun situations. I think it will work better than the 55-200 I have.

I agree with you 100%
These APS-C cameras are pretty powerful! Sure the Full Frame has some capabilities and features that these smaller bodies don't have but for MOST people, these are MORE than enough!

Is this lens a full frame lens or should I buy the 24-105 ? I have the Sony a7riv ..
This lens is specifically made for aps-c cameras! 📷
You will want to go with a FE (Full Frame E-mount) lens like the 24-105 F4!

Certainly if you have an A7ii you want to take full advantage of it. It’s really up to you and what your goals are with it.
I hope this help!
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia The 24-105 price is not justified if I own the 18-105 because video quality would not be affected and taking 10 megapixels photos in my case with a zoom lens usually require little or no crop so I would basically get the same result as the 24-105 with the exception of 27mm - 157mm instead of 24-105mm so I lose 23 megapixels 3mm but I gain 52.7mm worth of zoom in apsc/ super35 mode save $1400 and still carry around a lens weighing 181g less than the 24-105
this is a hard decision.
Excellent review. Thanks!
Inasmuch as I'm drawn to this lens on account of the glowing recommendations so far, I'm still drawn to a prime counterpart.

@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia thank you for the reply, if it's sharper than the kit lens I'll keep it when it arrives.

Hello sir. right now i have zve10. sony 16 50 kit lens. sigma 30mm so now should i buy this 18 105 or tamron 17 70 ?
That really all depends on what you will be using them for?
They both are great lenses! I love the LOOK of the Sony 18-105F4 personally. I use it OFTEN on my FX30 and it gives me GREAT colors and isn't harsh and over sharp!
The Tamron would yield you more light in lower light situations so again, it all depends on HOW you will be using it.

Hello! What about focus hunting in low light with 6400? I have serious issues wich ruins my video...
This is not a low light lens by any means. You will need to add light in order to get the best performance from this lens.
In addition, setting up your autofocus correctly will help improve your results as well!
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
Switching the light off and not altering iso or other settings was a bit weird as a test?

If the Sony A3000 used “e-mount” type adapter, then yes this 18-105 F4 lens will work!

Does is good for vlogging or will I go with sigma 16mm
It really depends on the type of vlogs you will be doing!
The Sigma is one focal length (it doesn’t zoom) but is EXCELLENT in low light situations!
The 18-105 has a RANGE of focal lengths but isn’t super great in very low light situations!
If you don’t have a camera yet, I would suggest using your cell phone to vlog first!
This will tell you HOW you will be using your camera, then you will be able to make an informed decision!

The biggest thing about this lens will be your reach (focal length) and your ability to shoot in low light 💡 while using a fast shutter speed to freeze 🥶 the action!

Greetings,
I have a Sony A6000, can anyone confirm that this sony 18-105 f4 lens does not allow lens compensation/distortion?
Thank you.
I'm not sure I fully follow your question. If you are asking if the lens has some distortion the answer is yes.
When you are taking photos, most Photo editors will have lens corrections built in which will take care of that for you.
I hope this helps. :)
Thanks for taking the time to watch and support the channel! 👍
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia Greetings,
I asked the question wrong, I meant that the "Lens Compensation" menu does not allow to activate the distortion correction, it has it deactivated.- However, the compensation of shadows and chromatic aberrations does allow it.
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia thanks! I haven't tried out the picture profiles on the camera yet, but I will check them out.....
How does a lens like this work on an A73??
Since the A7iii is a full frame sensor (35mm), putting a crop frame lens on it would cause then picture to have major vignetting (the corners will be very dark) and unrecoverable.
The solution would be to put your A7iii into (super 35 aps-c crop mode).
This causes the A7iii to only use a portion of the sensor to accommodate the 18-105f4 lens.
There is also a significant quality drop when using super 35 mode as well.
So yes, this lens can be used on the A7iii but at a cost of quality!
I hope this helps!
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! 🙏🏽 😊
Does work this lens in sony alpha ii? Please response to me😊
Yes it will “work”, however this lens is specifically made for aps-c camera bodies!
The Sony A7ii is a full frame 35mm sensor camera!
This means that you will have to put the camera into “crop mode” in order to not get vignetting on your photos/video.

I then flagged off part of the light so that it only falls where I want it. I also used a grid with my Godox to help keep the light focused where I wanted and to prevent spill.

@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia Thank you so much. I really appreciate this. Peter.
This lens was perfect when I photographed a ski competition especially when they were approaching the finish line.
Because when the skiers got closer to the finish line, my 70-350m was way to much zoom. Because I wanted to be able to take the final sprint of 100m and get some close up pictures. 18-100m
One solution was to have a close up lens on one camera 18-55m
And zoom lens 70-350m on another camera for 70-100m. Which was impractical and I lost some good pic.
Great use of the focal lengths you had available to you!👍🏾
What shutter speed did you use to capture them? Did you give them any blur or did you freeze the action?🤔
@@PurposedLensPhotoMedia

The lens will definitely work! However without knowing your setup it difficult to say what other equipment (lighting) you may need to be successful!

This lens will give you a lot more room to work with in LOW LIGHT! 💡
I currently use the Sigma 16mm in my RUclips more current videos!

Can this lens be used on a a7II

There are a lot of other reviewers who say the images are somewhat soft on this lens. Do you find this to be the case below 6.3?
“Softness” is relative to what one is used to seeing. 🤷🏽♂️
It’s not extremely sharp like the Sigma lenses on aps-c or full frame, but I wouldn’t call it “soft”. 🤷🏽♂️

No.
This lens is for APSC cameras. It CAN be used on a full frame came as long as it supports "Super 35 mode". which crops in on the sensor. Typically this setting will degrade the quality of your photos since the image is being cropped into.

The first question I would ask you is what will you be shooting?
Figuring out what you will be shooting will help you determine what lens will fit your needs!

Nowadays, there is more talk about the video part of a camera, which makes me sad.

Wait..., your shutter speed was 1/50?!?!? For a video?!?!?! #IgnoreMyIgnorance
Thanks for supporting the channel. 🙏🏽
Typically when shooting video we want to follow the 180 degree shutter rule!
