This lens i the absolute workhorse of Sony and, maybe, the most versatile first party APSC lens in the industry! I bought the 18-105 and the a6000 a few moths ago (both brand new) switching for the first time to mirrorless system. I shot for years with FF DSLR (Canon) but I decided to sell all my staff and stay with something smaller and simpler. I am shooting street and cityscapes and this camera/lens combo suits me well. There are three things about this lens that impressed me more: 1) the build quality. All metal, very sturdy and with nice look. You can’t find something similar (even from third party) for the price, for any mount. Is on par with my old Canon 24-105 f/4 L (minus the water sealing) that cost twice the price! 2) the optics. For a 6X zoom lens the image quality is top notch. I am printing A3 and A2 size without any problem on image quality. The flare resistance is very good (and the provided lens hood is actually useful). CA are not an issue… it has 3 aspherical elements after all. Not to mention the constant aperture and the internal focusing and zooming. 3) the electronics. Since this lens is fully electronic operated I initially felt out of the water coming from Canon L lenses but after a week or so I got used to it and now I can’t go back to mechanical. The zooming is very smooth even with the zoom ring (PZ switch is great for video but slow) and very precise because you can see in the viewfinder the focal length as you turn it. The same goes for the focus ring and because is STM type and you don’t have physical DoF scale, the camera is so advanced that you can see the focus distance live in your EVF (plus the focus peaking that makes MF a joy!). And the AF is very accurate and fast (way more accurate than the phase detection of DSLR and about as fast). Finally, the price. I bought it for 520€ new, not used. The EF 24-105 f/4 L costs about 1400€ today and covers a shorter range (there’s no crop factor there). For Sony a6xxx users is a no brainer. Sure, there are numerous Sigma or Tamron offerings but, let’s be honest, they can’t match a Sony lens in terms of compatibility and focusing. I had very tough times with the Tamron 70-210 f4 on my 5D mk4 back then (the focusing was hit or miss 7 out of 10 times).
It's a workhorse, as you say. I like the overall value this lens provides. This 18-105 range with constant aperture, internal zoom and OSS is a no brainer. Thanks for sharing 🙏 Have a nice day
@@nicholasning9033 i would pick the 18-105 because of the optical stabilization and constant f4 aperture. While zooming it doesnt extent. But if you need that extra range maybe the 18-300 could be a better pick. (I havent been any situation where the 105 was not enough.)
Awesome Video ! Hey , I was planning to buy Sony ZV E-10 for video and photo both(will upload on Instagram & youtube). What lenses should i buy? 1) shoud i buy tamron 1770 or sony 18-105 f/4 ? 2) will any prime lenses would be more effective (or safe to buy with (1)) 3) if i buy upper two lenses , buying kit lens do any good? It would be great help if you give any suggestion or suggest any video. Thankyou♥️
It's a hard question. It depends on what do you shoot? If you want to vlog i recommend a wider lens like sigma 16mm or similar. If you want to shoot portraits or details, i recommend more a 50-85mm fullframe equivalent lens like Sony 35mm f1.8 oss or sigma 56mm 1.4. If you dont know what situation you're getting into, i recommend a good zoom lens. I think sony 18-105 is a great lens, but for all around less i think the f4 sometimes not that good. So i think overall the 17-70 is a better lens, because of the f2.8. The tamron 17-70 f2.8 VC the best apsc zoom lens right now in my opinion. I don't recommend to buy the kit lens, if you're an experiment shooter you can do amazing things even with a potato too, but if you're just started it's hard to start with this lens and get great results. For the better learning curve i usually recommend a good 50mm ff equivalent prime lens like sony 35mm oss. Because you learn the focal length and distances. Than you know that the 50mm is too wide for you and you want to go tighter like 85mm or it's too tight and you like to shoot more with a 35mm(FF) or a 24mm(FF). It depens of your taste and shooting style. But in this case, i recommend you buy a good zoom lens, which covers a good range and good in low lght too. You can use it almost every situation. Than i would buy primes if i need more quality. So it's a hard question as you see. :D If you can describe more what content you want to shoot i could tell you a more precise recommendation. Thanks for asking! Have a nice day!✌
I prefer the Sony 18-135 f3.5-6.3. Yes, it extends when zooming in and it has no constant aperture. But is it smaller, a bit sharper and 30mm more range. So thats a win for me, i purchased it as a kit together with my A6400 and i love it. I own the tamron 17-70 2.8 and the Sony 70-350 by now, so i wouldnt really need the 18-135 anymore, but i cant get rid of it. It is so versatile and good, i just love it. I tested the 18-105 as well 2 years ago and was a little bit disappointed with the sharpness and it's weight. So i returned it.
Thanks for sharing! This lens is not the sharpest knife from all. but i think it's a great compromise between versatility and sharpness. And you have OSS which is very useful in 105mm. And i use it most of the time on a gimbal and because it's not extend, it makes it better for gimbal work. I think the tamron 17-70 f2.8 a better lens overall and makes the 18-105 pointless. But the variable aperture in the 18-135 bothers me when i shoot wedding, i dont have time to set the exposure again and again. And when i bought the sony18-105 the tamron 17-70 does not exist. And i satisfied with this too. ✌
Very informative and helpful, thank you for that. Can you tell me what settings you used in the video. I have the lens and can't quite get to grips with the settings and my pictures don't look that good either. I tried with different settings A and M mode but unfortunately with little success. Thank you.
Thanks! I appreciate 🙏 how do you usually shoot? The results heavily depends on the lighting and your settings. And the editing part is also important. Make sure that you’re exposure is not under 0 on the meter, because it could cause some problems. And i have free assets for the editing part, so you should give a try. Maybe it could help. Hi! For apsc zoom, it depends on the situation. If i want to be compact: sigma 18-50 f2.8, If the range is the most important thing then sony 18-105. If i would go for the best value for the money then I would buy the tamron 17-70 f2.8.
That was hilarious 😂 😅. Hey… just keep kissing while I swap lenses.😂😅. Thank you for the review. I just bought a fx30 along with the f4/18/105. A soon as I tried it out inside my house I could tell it was made for outside or I really need to light the room.
Hi man, i rly appreciated the video ! I've a question, i want to do football pics and i was wondering if the apparture (f/4) had a too low exposure for evening/night match when there is not a lot of lights. Do you think this lens is still ok for that ? Thank you !
Hi! Thank you for asking. I think f4 here is not the best option in low light..but you have luck with football, because usually football players cant play in the dark, because they dont see the ball. So i think there is a chance that they have lights.
Love my primes, but sometimes you just dont have time to swap lenses. Just ordered this one, cant wait for it to arrive. It will be my first zoom lens lmao.
Peter: good overview with some beautiful shots. I generally use this lens on an a6400 but have also used it on a full frame body (I shoot mainly with primes and have no interest in buying a FF zoom). I was pleasantly surprised to find the OSS of the PZ 18 105 complemented well with the IBIS in the a7iv, leading to very smooth footage even handheld. Some thoughts here: ruclips.net/video/9EdyPEr2gAQ/видео.html
You know how to start a good conversation. :D But my friend, we're not the same. If you find my videos or me boring, you can find other creators in youtube who are probably more entertaining than me. For example @thaticelandicguy. He's a really great guy. Maybe my videos not that catchy but maybe it could help others to decide to buy this lens or not. I only share my experiences about this lens. I dont really need optical stabilization indoors with this lens, because as i mentioned this lens is not meant for indoor shooting. The 18-105 range is better outside. I rarely use the whole range indoors and the f4 is not ideal for indoor shooting. It needs a lot of light if you try to achieve the correct exposure. So a prime lens could be a much better option. But you're right...every stabilization could be beneficial if you shoot handheld. But a lot of times i shoot from a tripod or a gimbal, so i dont need that extra stability. It's really great on gimbal, cause it doesn't extend while zooming, so it's perfect for gimbal work. There are some workarouns which help a lot with the stabilization. I appreciate the oss outside when i have to move a lot or i'm on the 105mm. In that case the OSS works really great. But it's just my opinion and it's not the holy law. If you want to use it indoors, you could do that. Have a nice day!
@@petersroom ...ok, sorry for being rude in the first place, but you gave us a few antiadvices about this lens.. Without deeper reasons then...what? Focal range or speed?
