    T stops (T for transmittance) is the light that actually hits the sensor; it can only be measured in a lab using some pretty expensive equipment. F stops are a theoretical value derived from your lens' focal length divided by the diameter of your aperture. Put very simply, the T-stop is the corrected, real-world value of the F-stop. For instance, an f/1.8 will often be more like a T/2.0.

    I'm glad that you mention that the average person can't go out and buy all the recommended lenses. I have a very limited budget and can only afford one good lens. Some other RUclipsrs say that we need to get this lens and that lens. I would love to have all of these good lenses but I can't casually drop $500 - $1500 on a camera or lens at a whim. I ended up going with the Sigma 18-50. I really wanted the Tamron 17-70 because of the better focal range and I actually prefer bigger lenses because I like the feel of them. But I ended up with the Sigma because it was cheaper and the minimum focus distance would be useful for product shots.

    Absolutely the Sony 18-135mm, my favorite walk around lens. Not on your list but an amazing lens for wildlife is the Sony 70-350mm. what a great value for all that reach, if you need it. Bought it to photograph bears and iceboats and have found all kinds of other uses. It’s a little bulky but nothing like the heft of an equivalent full-frame lens (105-525mm) in weight or price.

      @patrickgottschalk1826 The Tamron has a shorter range and is notva Power Zoom lens, and in videography, that's a plus. On the other hand, 18-105 is an F4 which compared to the Tamron F2.8 has some problem in darker environment but in daytime with sunny days F.4 is even too much. At night i usually using one of the Sigmas prime. The Tamron though could be very useful.

    There's a nice analog for sigma 18-50, it's 18-105 f4 PZ OSS. Aperture of 4 is mostly enought with light and bokeh capabilities, more zoom range, optical stabilization and it is for nearly same price(cheaper often)

  • @MrPhilbautista
    @MrPhilbautista 9 месяцев назад +1

    I'd give props to the Sigma 18-35/1.8. The wider max aperture is much more useful than the 15mm it gives up on the telephoto end of the 18-50/2.8 when shooting video cos when shooting video with these lenses, most of the zooming is done with the feet anyway but it's much more difficult to account for depth of field and light gathering. I'd also like to give props to the Sigma 16/1.4, an excellent wide angle prime perfect for the vlog style shooting you do. While it doesn't have OS, wide angle lenses tend to be more forgiving, if handled correctly. Both of these lenses are quite heavy though, so using them with a gimbal will require a lot of careful balancing and, given how front heavy they will be, it helps to get a gimbal with stronger motors. But if you're mounting them on glidecams or using them handheld, you should do just fine.

  • @JimmyFeelsIt
    @JimmyFeelsIt 10 месяцев назад +1

    as far as I know, T and f are not different when it comes to the result but rather the way they are measured.
    f stops measure how far the lens opens to let in light while the T (transmission) depends on how much light actually gets in.
    An f/1.4 would be pretty much the same as a T/1.4 but it is a bit more accurate.

    I believe the T-stop measures how much light actually reaches the sensor while F-stop measures the aperture. I guess film needs that level of specificity.

    • @thefilmalliance
      @thefilmalliance  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you Jermaine, I knew someone would be out there with this information. That’s interesting isn’t it?

    • @MostafaMoradii
      @MostafaMoradii 10 месяцев назад

      Yeah, they consider amount of light is reflected or not reached to the sensor. So F-stop always is lower than T-stop.

  • @charlieparis3454
    @charlieparis3454 8 месяцев назад

    I believe that T and F when referring to aperture are different measurements of light, F is based off of the diameter of the aperture (it doesnt account for the lost of light through the lens elements) where as T is based off of how much light will reach the sensor so it will provide a more accurate number since it takes into account how much light fall off there will be as it travels through to the lens.
    I am fairly new to this concept so I might not have explained it 100% accurately but I think thats the idea behind it

  • @wardyousef02

    T is used when you want to talk about how much light goes through the lens element and hits the sensor
    So, theoretically speaking, you might find 2 lenes with the same F number, but they have different light transmittance(T number), which means more light is hitting the sensor in one of them

But after my new lineup it will go on sale. Still, it's an affordable and lightweight zoom option with great wildlife focus due to great autofocus, good image stabilization and excellent image sharpness at 300mm (center frame). But when it comes to corner sharpness at 18mm, the lens falls far short of the 17-70 and any other prime option. Another lens for sale is the Sigma 16mm F1.4. The chromatic aberrations are much worse than with the cheapest Viltrox, the 13mm F1.4.

    Someone might have pointed this out, the Sony 55-210 is 4.5-6.3 and not 3.5-6.3. It was my first long range lens after the kit and the Sigma 30mm, I learned a lot from the 55-210 and sill use it for nature on the Ifootage Cobra 3 monopod. My nickname for it is the thermos can. Other lenses: Sigma 16, Sigma 18-50 ( on the a6700 most of the time Sony 18-105 (for the E10) just for fun TTArtisan 10mm F2 and 27mm f 2.8. I am done buying cameras and lenses until I get better. I would like to do some astro next.

    Joe, this is an excellent topic. You definitely nailed it with the intro. I was that guy, too, a year ago.
    I was super curious what you'd end up picking as your"favorite" wide angle lens. I figured it'd be between the Sony 11mm and the Viltorx 13mm. Was the f1.4 vs the f1.8 the deciding factor? Or was it something else?

    Most of your handheld footage is super shaky. Have you tried turning all the stabilization off and then use Gyroflow in post? I've been goofing around with it for the past few months and am seriously impressed with it - super easy to use as well with a native plugin for resolve. Oh, and the best all around lens out of all of these is definitely the Sigma 18-50. That lens rarely leaves my FX30.

    The minimum focus distance on the Sony 18-135 doesn't change along the zoom range, which gives it a 0,29 max reproduction ratio. Yes, it's far from macro, but it's the best one from all the lenses in the video, so it's weird that the "it's not macro" argument came precisely with that lens.

    I have the 18-135 and its just not fast enough for video IMO. I got the Tamron 17-70 and it been my go-to, I leave it on my FX30. I'm looking for something faster right now. I used to keep my Viltrox 23mm f1.4 on my a6400 for photography. It was a great all around prime. But it has since broke, the auto focus stopped working and it's out of support from Viltrox. I've been thinking of the Sniper or Nightwalkers from Sirui only for the 3 lense versatility they bring. I can't decide if I want something with more reach or just faster aperture.

Anxious try the new lens out, as I have been using the 18-105, but found it's pretty heavy for travel photography. Will probably sell one or the other, as I don't think I really need both. Phenomenal video but I’d say the Tamron 17-70 2.8 used is worth looking at over the sigma 18-50 2.8 ESPECIALLY if you have a camera body with no in body image stabilization because of the tamrons vibration control. More range as well.

    So I guess I talk now about my own lenses…..…(I using the a6000) I fall in love with the 17-70 Tamron f2.8 coz I need a stabilisation in the lense. After purchased the Sony 70-350, i wasn’t happy at all. The variable aperture and the AF problems makes me to switch (Tamron s AF was better than Sonys). So I purchasing the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 . I’m really happy with that lense. So my next lenses would be the samyang 12mm (rockinon) and after the the 27mm viltrox. Coz you asked what’s the t-stop in cineplenses are; t = transmission of light through the lense, a = is only the opening of the lens (that s an mathematical equation with the focal length of the lense). So if you look at the t stop you see how much light delivered through the lense to your sensor. Sorry for my bad English :(

    • @thefilmalliance
      @thefilmalliance  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Pascal, I understand what you’re saying and thank you for that thoughtful comment. I agree with you that Tamron lenses are sometimes even faster in auto focus than Sony. I wish I got my hands on the Tamron, 17 to 70.
