People are going to hate me for saying this, but who cares, I friggin adore this monster. I can confidently say that he is my favorite monster of all time. Why you ask? Godzilla '98 was the first movie I saw in a theater, it left a huge impression on me and became a huge staple of my childhood. I fully why this guy well liked, but I just wish some people would stop complaining so much and just move on.
I certainly agree with you! Godzilla 1998 was the second Godzilla movie I saw in my childhood, and I instantly became a fan, because fact is, it is the greatest Godzilla movie ever made!
Thanks a lot for the video, it was quite insightful. I don't think many people realize that a lot of practical effects were used in the 1998 version, - heck, even I thought it was almost all-CG. And such detail went into it, too - like destroying a perfectly good car just so it can be smashed by Godzilla somewhere in the background - we don't even notice it because our attention is on the human character that's about to be crushed! Wow, that's dedication... or...
Honestly dude, I don't really care what they think. A lot of die-hard Godzilla fans take this stuff WAY too seriously anyway. I've heard people who hate this movie say that if you view it as a critic, and then the Japanese movies, this is undeniably a better movie. Saying that doesn't mean that they like the movie, it just means that they recognize that it's much more well-made. Most Toho fans aren't unbiased individuals either.
As much as i disliked this movie, i admire the traditional effects. Watching the crew dance around in lizard suits is more sufficient entertainment than the movie.
+Ryan King I like the movie, but that's just my personal opinion talking, and I have legitimate reasons why I like it. And as a fan of Practical FX, I admire the fact they they were employed in this film. They truly look genuinely believable to me.
Why the hell didn't they use that robot? It woul've looked way better then the CGI one. Think about it. If you had that robot tramping on miniture buildings it would've been decent. However it still wouldn't be Godzilla.
2:00 "For scenes involving the adult Godzilla in the heart of Gotham," Let be known right now that the reason I'm disappointed in this movie is not because of the Godzilla redesign, no, I'm disappointed because of the fact that this movie took place in Gotham City and Batman never showed up!! Worst movie ever!!!1111
'Naturalistic.' That's the more appropriate term to describe Zilla. Naturalistic is when something has certain, specific elements of realism to it, but it's not 100% realistic. That's the more appropriate term for Zilla because while there are a lot of elements from other different animals incorporated into his character, the fact that he's nothing like a marine iguana (from which he mutated/evolved from) means that he's not exactly realistic. But in Zilla's case, regular knowledge about marine iguanas does not apply to him for the sole fact that he is a MUTANT. I feel that those who despise him and his movie tend to overlook that: that Zilla is a MUTANT. When a creature is mutated, of course it's going to differ in some way or another from its original form. That's what happened in Zilla's case. Only he wasn't just mutated, he pretty much rapidly evolved into a whole new species altogether.
sonicXrules123 Yeah. Godzilla is supposedly a mutated version of a fictional dinosaur called a 'Godzillasaurus.' But he's also believed to be a mutated hybrid of a T-Rex and a Stegosaurus.
You are so absolutely right! I mean I love all Godzilla movies, but the 1998 film is without a doubt the most realistic, entertaining, and best ever made, 99% of the general public cannot be wrong! No offense to the almost as good Japanese Godzilla films! Peace, and long live Godzilla!
0:31 I wish this was featured on the DVD as a Bonus Feature by going behind the scenes of how they created 0:35 this Godzilla. 0:54 & 1:44 Including it's offspring.
I agree with everyone. CGI is being overused and I absolutely love people in suits more than a CGI creature. Look at Predators, it's the only film that has near complete guys in suits and hardly any CGI monsters at all. That is one of the reason, it's one of my favorite films. It relies on the classic formula.
While I agree that the movie could have and should have been better (really, how did they mess it up!?) In an objective sense I do quite like the practical effects, it's still no Jurassic Park or 2001 but I feel like they made a good move by using a scale model and not trying to go all CG.
@Clonetos I agree that the movie sucked, but inflatable bladders are a huge part of animatronics. Name any practical effect, and it has some sort of inflatable balloon bladder. And as much as the movie sucked, the practical fx are pretty impressive.
Gotham is actually an official nickname for New York City, however this nickname has lost its appeal. This was the 90's, people used to say "radical dude"...times change. Thankfully.
that's cool they had real animatronics.. shame it wasn't used that much though. It could have been a really good monster flick if they had changed the name and used more of this practical effects in the video. It could have even been set in the same universe as the Godzilla movies, that is why the sailor mistakes him for it, it just shouldn't have tried to replace him with something else.
2:00 In the heart of Gotham? Okay, this was obviously put together by people who not only didn't watch the original, but apparently didn't even watch THIS ONE! Quality production
Is it heretical of me to think that the suitwork Baby Zillas might have actually looked fairly cool if they were in a different movie? Even the adult Zilla torso is an impressive bit of robotics. I feel like if even if the film had been marketed as a blatantly transparent Godzilla clone, it might have done marginally better than trying to sell it as an actual Godzilla movie.
@AK107DX what the hell are they supposed to call him, I bet you more people saw the remake then that godzilla sequal in which the term "zilla" was coined. so that counts for something. The movie may have been not that great but the fx were fantastic
The people who produced this movie obviously are oblivious to the reason why the original Godzilla series were successful. Godzilla is not Jurassic Park so it is not meant to be hyper realistic. Sure, the original Godzilla is a man in a suit. But that's one damn awesome suit.
A Corveau Godzilla in japanese is Gojira so Godzilla is actually a mutated Gojirasaurus it kinda makes sense the quill feathers turned into the back plates
Patrick Tatopolous is a genius. You can see the way he expresses himself and the work he put in making Godzilla that he really truly is an expert at what he does. Godzilla 1998 is a fantastic movie, from the script, to the actors, to the effort in creating the movie sets and Godzilla itself. Whoever does not like Godzilla 1998 is plain ignorant, jealous and narrow minded. Very narrow minded.
2012 isn't using much CGI... They're using suitmation only TOUCHED UP with CGI. And yes, CGI sucks, occasionally It's so overused, and because of that it tends not to look very good a lot of the time. And suitmation is more believable than CGI, in my opinion. If Zilla were to exist, it's not going to look heavily computerized is it?
AstroGoji2000 You know you're talking about the same guy who designed the aliens from Independence Day right? I myself never had anything against the new design (the one from the canceled 1994 Godzilla 3D film was awesome as well), I just hated the love story (which actually, in retrospect, parodied the love stories in the older, although cheesier, Godzilla films).
Well Matt, they're memorable (considering that they're a vast improvement on the "Alien Grey" concept), and there were toys made of them. Honestly, the movie won't have been half as fun without them. Wait, you mean that ID: Resurgence sucked, right? Because the original ID4 was fun movie that still holds up today.
Peter Campi Critcs and siskel & ebert wouldn't call The original Independence Day movie great or amazing. Most of them would give the movie a bad to ok rating....
What do you mean "wouldn't"? They DIDN'T. Besides, the critics weren't the deciding factor on ID4's blockbuster status in the end. It's too bad the sequel was a big let down by comparison.
In the heart of Gotham!? What the actual fuck? Apparently the people who put this together not only didn't watch any of Godzilla's REAL films but didn't even watch THIS one! If it was in Gotham I would've paid to see Batman just come right the fuck out of nowhere, curbstomp Zilla, beat up Matthew Broderick, and then throw Dean Delvin into a garbage compacter. Also, 80 pound suits huh? Those pussies, Haruo Nakajima, the guy who wore the FIRST EVER Godzilla suit, had 200 Pounds to deal with!
fair enough but isn't that the point of America: make the same thing but in our own way like anime in Japan to boondocks in America I don't think it was suppose to be like the original at all
This is a nice Gorgo Remake... I really liked the costumes and some of the designs... shame for the shitty script and that they called it Godzilla for marketing...
You don't understand what I am saying, I'm not exactly a giant Godzilla fan either. I like all kinds of movies what what they are at an equal scale, but I just find it funny how a majority of people are immediately turned off by effects that don't live up to Hollywood's big budget effects. Transformers had excellent graphics, but it's story and character development is just trash. Yet a lot of people would probably prefer that over a movie starring a man in a suit.
they but appearanlty the behind the scenes footage has the monsters in practical effects i bet they were low on budget so they had to use cgi since its much cheaper.
gtx xxx ''whatever'' can render this in a snap XDDDD Back then they had those old white computers that cost like 4000$ and had like 1/1000000 the power of my whole average-ly priced gaming computer XDDD Have a nice day, great movie this one was ahahah i was like 5 when it came out XDD
So you want them to always kill of the monster in the first movie? No that would be boring and the american godzilla movie was good but no other monsters dies sooo quickly and you call that fun? Plus they are taking a really memorable monster and making him seem weak. So tell me, is monsters fighting with a good background more boring than a monster dying in 12 missels?
Oh yea, and Godzilla was a male in this movie... I don't care if he laid eggs, but even if the animal isn't really Godzilla, anything with the name of Godzilla is male.
0:45, "to give director Roland Emmerich a bigger, badder lizard." You mean the much smaller and weaker animal that couldn't release radiation from its mouth and was actually destroyed by the military? Makes sense ;)
Lol, you're going to tell me that a movie with a 200 foot dinosaur that does martial arts is a "good movie"? And who wants to watch a movie where the protagonist is invincible? That's boring to me, that's another reason why I like the American Godzilla better. It's similar to the reason that I like Spider-man better than Superman.
1. The narrator got it wrong. 1954-56 Godzilla was not just a man in a suit. Godzilla was a series of special effects blended to create a blockbuster. Example: Hand puppet, mechanical, and some brief stop motion effects were used. 2. Toho displeased with the 98 turdzilla, revoked Sony Tristar's rights to the creature and it's name. 3. Godzilla can be unbelieveable as it wants to be. He is a legend. Like Leviathan, whom no man can slay. 4. Legendary GODZILLA will make you forget this turd movie!!
Come on now, I've heard die-hard Godzilla fans say that some of the Godzilla movies are arguably some of the worst movies ever made, and that Toho has churned out nothing but shit for the past 50 years. Even if you hate the movie, critics (who are not biased) and the general public will agree that the American Godzilla movie is a much more well made, and entertaining movie than anything Toho ever did. It also has a lot of emotion in it, which Toho movies lack.
Wtf were these guys smoking, did they even see the original. the nippon Godzilla annihilated Tokyo, a wasteland was left. Footage of people injured and dead, while a child choir was signing were disturbing images. A bigger and badder version? Zilla was smaller and ran away from the military, didn't have atomic breath and got killed by some tiny missiles and was hurt by a small shock. The real Godzilla didn't even bother when the military attacks him. Even Minilla is stronger than Zilla.
Some of the films TOHO make are good, but not great. Godzilla 2000 is not one of my favorite films. They tried to make something better then the American Godzilla & it backfired completely! Godzilla (in this film) is a hybrid of different animals. That would make more sense than a ressurected dinosaur, y'know.
0:45 BIGGER, BADDER!!!!!!!!!! why is he SMALLER than the REAL GODZILLA, and if he is supposed to be badder why does he NOT breath fire, and why does he get killed with MISSILES. Just sayin'!
I agree plus when it says LIZARD it's like you're saying what the **** is your problem he's a mutated dinosaur (GODZILLASAURUS) NOT A LIZARD!!!!!!!!!!!
If they changed the name of the movie and of the monster before releasing it I wouldn't be so mad. Even if it wasn't called Godzilla, it would still be a bad & forgettable movie.
wait, did he say "Her" for Godzilla....I think he had to watch the movie again cause the bastard was Asexual, unlike his more Popular son Zilla from Godzilla: The Series, and did you know they where going to make a GODZILLA 2 and a GODZILLA 3 that would take place in a Monster Island, but they said screw it and made the show, all this....for Zilla Jr.
Señor Woofers China is only involved in the 2014 Godzilla since Tencent owns Legendary which means King of Monsters and Kong and Pacific Rim and the sequal are all Chinese movies..........
I never knew they made a animatronic Godzilla for this movie. That looked amazing!
but the design looks ugly
"For scenes of the adult Godzilla in the heart of Gotham..." lol
Batman: "What is this 'Godzilla?"
Everyone in 1998: *shows the slim abomination that is somehow called Godzilla*
Batman: "You're kidding, right?"
@@bigmuscleguy9694 True that.
You mean, the heart of New York?
People are going to hate me for saying this, but who cares, I friggin adore this monster. I can confidently say that he is my favorite monster of all time. Why you ask? At the end of the credits, it said special thanks to Tomoyuki Tanaka.
It is dedication, plus professional special effects craftsmanship. 😊
Yeah I know that you think the 98 Zilla movie might be good but the cartoon that this was based off of was WAY BETTER!

Gotham was a term for New York City
That movie will always be ZILLA
I actually like the design of this godzilla
'Naturalistic.' That's the more appropriate term to describe Zilla. Naturalistic is when something has certain, specific elements of realism to it, but it's not 100% realistic. sonicXrules123 Yeah. Godzilla is supposedly a mutated version of a fictional dinosaur called a 'Godzillasaurus.' But he's also believed to be a mutated hybrid of a T-Rex and a Stegosaurus.
Found this while I was looking for some information about Iguanas for my project ;-;
Dark Severus :)
Now this is how you do practical effects ! Much better than Toho's Cookie Monster with dorsal spines.
You are so absolutely right! I mean I love all Godzilla movies, but the 1998 film is without a doubt the most realistic, entertaining, and best ever made, 99% of the general public cannot be wrong! No offense to the almost as good Japanese Godzilla films! Peace, and long live Godzilla!
both effects are incredible, but suit-motion works when you put heart & soul into it.
0:31 I wish this was featured on the DVD as a Bonus Feature by going behind the scenes of how they created 0:35 this Godzilla. 0:54 & 1:44 Including it's offspring.
This movie started my obsession with everything Godzilla ❤️

In the heart of Gotham/Her powerful Jaws, what the hell it this guy talking about.

Hey... where can be found these costumes? They still exist? :0
And they mentioned that he was in fact a male in the actual movie and explained WHY he can have a baby... I guess people just don't pay attention
The first Godzilla movie wasn't even supposed to be a monster movie. It was a post-war allegory. For crying out loud...
Well, don't take me wrong, but I think it was not a problem, it was rather genius! Really special!
2:00 In the heart of Gotham?
Okay, this was obviously put together by people who not only didn't watch the original, but apparently didn't even watch THIS ONE!
Quality production
"Combined in the computer."
The one computer. An '87 Macintosh, presumably.
Honestly, I liked the movie very much
I miss practical effects. and seriously why do people hate this movie so much.
Nick Menendez because they did everything wrong
godzilla MUST be bipedal goofy and overweight
People hate it cuz other people on the internet tell them to.
Gotham?
That cool!
NICE !!!!!!!!
Is it heretical of me to think that the suitwork Baby Zillas might have actually looked fairly cool if they were in a different movie? Even the adult Zilla torso is an impressive bit of robotics. Interesting. I can't say I ever heard that one before. Big Apple, sure, but Gotham?
Yeah, glad times change.
the name of the designer was Tatopoulos, so they named the main guy in the movie tatopoulos too?
@AK107DX
what the hell are they supposed to call him, I bet you more people saw the remake then that godzilla sequal in which the term "zilla" was coined. so that counts for something. The movie may have been not that great but the fx were fantastic

@cushe83 Sure would be nice is people actually WATCHED stuff before making judgement calls.
look whos using ruber suits now
Zilla = Mutated Iguana
Godzilla = Mutated Godzillasaurus (Dinosaur)
It's Not Hard To Find Out Who Wins XD
+Harry Calleja he will be unbalanced
A Corveau Godzilla in japanese is Gojira
so Godzilla is actually a mutated Gojirasaurus
it kinda makes sense

"to create a more realistic destroyer" haha thats a laugh
Godzilla doesn't do martial arts. Something tells me you haven't seen a lot of Godzilla movies.

I don't get it this wasn't bad for it's time why do so many hate it??
Because Godzilla 1998 was very inaccurate to the original. I disliked the movie, but the monster is pretty neat. :)
fair enough but isn't that the point of America: make the same thing but in our own way like anime in Japan to boondocks in America I don't think it was suppose to be like the original at all
Casshern like an other comment says "They just took the God Out of godzilla"
P-Impmon The dosen't excuse the rest of the film for sucking though.
P-Impmon My mistake, I exaggerated a little. It dosen't all suck, but the movie is ok over all.
Godzilla 1998 (Zilla) is a female, 2:43.
No it's asexual
Alex the Kaiju Fan its both he and she
i know i loved this godzilla movie :) and people need stop complaining like really what it going to do change anything it over and everything
This is a nice Gorgo Remake... I really liked the costumes and some of the designs... shame for the shitty script and that they called it Godzilla for marketing...

This movie would of been so much better if Zilla breathed real fire like THE REAL GODZILLA and fought another monster Like Godzilla
So you want them to always kill of the monster in the first movie? No that would be boring and the american godzilla movie was good but no other monsters dies sooo quickly and you call that fun? @TeamAnimeNexus Plus, GINO actually looks pretty cool.
Also, Zilla didn't even really destroy a lot. There was just some debris.
Unfortunately, even though this film is OK it is better than all of the other campy and convoluted films.
0:45, "to give director Roland Emmerich a bigger, badder lizard." You mean the much smaller and weaker animal that couldn't release radiation from its mouth and was actually destroyed by the military? Makes sense ;)
2014 Godzilla might be motion capture.
Godzilla kicked Zilla's butt :P
@AK107DX
come on now, so the traditional godzilla movies are "good" ?
Lol, you're going to tell me that a movie with a 200 foot dinosaur that does martial arts is a "good movie"?
And who wants to watch a movie where the protagonist is invincible? That's boring to me, that's another reason why I like the American Godzilla better. It's similar to the reason that I like Spider-man better than Superman.

Get me Fegelein! FEGELEIN FEGELEIN FEGELEIN
I think of Gino as a seperate monster that the U.S. misunderstood for the Japanese Godzilla.
Dang I think I like this movie now?

0:45 BIGGER, BADDER!!!!!!!!!! why is he SMALLER than the REAL GODZILLA, and if he is supposed to be badder why does he NOT breath fire, and why does he get killed with MISSILES. Just sayin'!
Bigger, Badder Godzilla? NOT by a long shot!!!
And they say this movie is a CG fest.
Immediately after which a character shouts, 'I knew that tuna eating lizard was no good!'
I agree plus when it says LIZARD it's like you're saying what the **** is your problem he's a mutated dinosaur (GODZILLASAURUS) NOT A LIZARD!!!!!!!!!!!
Kinda like the liliensternus, baby t-rex and utahraptors from walking with dinosaurs live.
Did he say the first Godzilla movie is garbage you
it would have still been legimate if was called ''Zilla'' a new character in the universe.
this is the slightly more realistic version of Godzilla.
If they changed the name of the movie and of the monster before releasing it I wouldn't be so mad. Even if it wasn't called Godzilla, it would still be a bad & forgettable movie.
They ended up using CGI. I wonder why...
hahahaha i remembered that!

Where's Batman!
Sounds like you're jaded by american films like 99% of the general public you've mentioned. =P
Why does the narrator say "the adult Godzilla in the heart of Gotham? It's not set in Gotham!
'Gotham' meaning New York City. It is referred to as 'Gotham' sometimes.

wait, did he say "Her" for Godzilla....I think he had to watch the movie again cause the bastard was Asexual, unlike his more Popular son Zilla from Godzilla: The Series, and did you know they where going to make a GODZILLA 2 and a GODZILLA 3 that would take place in a Monster Island, but they said screw it and made the show, all this....for Zilla Jr.
Elguason Nosaugle Ok but in the movie nick said "it's a he!".
did u kno china got mad at when they made a trex godzilla they sad that's not godzilla so now the name now is zilla
Don't you mean Japan?
Señor Woofers China is only involved in the 2014 Godzilla
since Tencent owns Legendary
which means King of Monsters and Kong and Pacific Rim and the sequal are all Chinese movies..........
Godzilla is not a LIZARD
***** You're kinda stating the obvious. :P
Brenda Salazar This is Zilla or G.I.N.O.(Godzilla In Name Only) not Godzilla
CGI looks fake too. lol Most times you can tell it's not really there.
