1954. Godzilla.
Godzilla was co-created by the Japanese special effects legend Eiji Tsuburaya who was the pioneer of Giant Monster Suit. A stunt performer dressed in the Godzilla suit would perform on a miniature set built at a 1:25 scale. The rubber suit was heavy and its materials weren't breathable so the suit performer could only wear it for limited amounts of time before becoming overheated. The suit's internal cotton lining had to be dried out or replaced every day due to the amount the performer sweated.
1955. Godzilla: Raids Again.
In this film the Giant Monster Suit evolved, plaster casts were made of the suit performers on which a cloth base was fashioned and then covered in latex. The Godzilla suit had motors built into the head to move its eyes and open its mouth and the batteries required to power them were concealed in the base of the tail.
1962. King Kong vs Godzilla.
After seven years lying dormant, Godzilla comes back to fight King Kong. The idea behind the film was basically to create more fans of the sagas. It was decided that both Godzilla and King kong should be made to appeal to children to widen their audience but also to pacify any political tension that could arise from an "East battles West" film.
1984. The Return of Godzilla.
After the 1962 film, King Kong vs Godzilla, 12 other films were produced but these were mostly just rehashes of the same concept, that was until 1984 and The Return of Godzilla. In this film, Godzilla returns to his darker, more destructive roots. Special effects artists altered the scale of their miniatures to make Godzilla seem bigger, going from 160ft to 260ft. A new suit was built and Godzilla got his fourth toe and his ears back.
1998. Godzilla.
Even with the advances occurring in VFX during the 90s, it wasn't until Hollywood did a version in 1998 that Godzilla went digital. The baby Godzilla's in this film were heavily dependant on animatronics but Godzilla itself was fully CG and Centropolis Effects, VisionArt, and Sony Imageworks were tasked with the CG work. A total of 400 VFX shots were required for the film and 235 of them were Godzilla CG shots.
2004. Godzilla: Final Wars.
Back to Japan and back into the monster suit. 5 more films came out since 1998 and all of them were heavily reliant on practical effects and had relatively moderate success at the box office. Godzilla: Final Wars was no different, and the director took an almost stubborn approach to the VFX.
2014. Godzilla.
After a decade in hibernation, Godzilla awoke to appear in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse series. MPC, DNEG, Weta digital, CafeFX, Lidar VFX, Stereo D, Scanline VFX, and The Third Floor all took part in the VFX. MPC designed and created Godzilla referencing Lions, Bears, Komodo Dragons, and lizards to build its skeleton and muscle and fat structure. Lidar scans were taken to build an exact 3D map of San Francisco and Army vehicles were digitized to create CG assets.
2016. Shin Godzilla.
Two years after the success of Legendary pictures' Godzilla, Toho, The Japanese company that created Godzilla released "Shin Godzilla", Shin Godzilla can mean "New" Godzilla or "True" Godzilla was the first announced to be in production only a few months after the success of its Hollywood counterpart. Toho decided to create their scariest version of Godzilla to date and they used Motion-capture and Digital effects to accomplish this.
2019. King of the Monsters.
The sequel to Godzilla and the third film in the MonsterVerse series didn't do well at the box office despite MPC, DNEG, Method Studios, Ollin VFX, Rodeo FX, and Raynault VFX's tremendous work reimagining and recreating Godzilla along with 3 other "Toho" titans in addition to 11 other new monsters.
2021. Godzilla vs Kong.
Despite the poor response to King of the Monsters, production of the fourth film in the series continued and Godzilla vs Kong didn't disappoint. this was because it gave just what it promised, two big monsters having a big fight. Again MPC was tasked with bringing Godzilla to life and they created the scariest and most realistic Godzilla ever.

It's a bit disingenuous to imply that Shin Godzilla's effects are 'under par' because they make it look like a man in a suit. I mean... that was 100% the intention, and they excelled at that task (if they look like a man in a suit and not a blob of CGI, that's mission accomplished). There is some jank to be seen in a few scenes, for sure, but for quite different reasons.

I loved King of the Monsters. Despite what most of my friends think, I liked the plotline and the twists *aka daughter and wife getting... ahem... kidnapped* I think my favorite parts were with Mothra. That was so cool. Am looking forward to seeing more of Godzilla in the future

Final Wars is one of my least-liked Godzilla movies and the 1998 is a guilty pleasure, I enjoyed 2019's KotM more than 2021's GvK.

Well, for those times that was a marvel of effect, but now it is less interesting and very simple, although for a few years, young people will make fun of computer effects because everything is going to be 100% real, like if it were about Godzilla acting for his own movie XD

… wasn’t the whole damn point with Shin Godzilla was to make it feel like a man in a suit though? Like I agree there were a few shots that felt kinda weird looking with the cgi, but the fact that it looked like someone was wearing the suit was great! I want more like that, it’s charming as hell
