Thank you, the description at the end sums this up to a tee. I saw this when I was 8 and loved it. It still appeals to the 8 year old boy in me, and when Corridor Crew featured the film in their VFX artists react series, they mentioned how much time was taken both in practical effects and CGI. The score by David Arnold is brilliant, and the cinematography is top notch as well, with the use of real atomic bomb footage far more impactful than any CGI nuke ever seen. My family enjoyed it on VHS, a friend found it enjoyable at a sleepover, I've met fans of it since and when I watched it with my wife she had no complaints. I can understand why fans of the series would hate it, but I can overlook the sometimes painfully bad acting and soak up the spectacle. I even saw a disaster movie countdown on TV where this version made it into the Top 40 (35th place I think).
I'm a long time original Godzilla fan. I've seen every Godzilla movie ever made including some Gamera, Rodan, Mothra and Japanese King Kong. I love Godzilla 1998. It brought Godzilla back down to earth. Something that was lacking since the original. It wasn't over the top cheesy and silly like the dancing Godzilla, or the kid dreaming about being on monster Island and playing with Godzilla's son and learning lessons of how to stand up to bullies. I could see where they were going with the planned trilogy. Each new offspring of Godzilla will be closer and closer to the Godzilla monster of the Japanese films. The biggest problem with Godzilla by the time it reached 1994 is that he got too powerful. This is a trend that Toho kept going up until Godzilla Final Wars. It was getting less and less likely that Godzilla had any threat against him. Godzilla 1998 made him vulnerable again. While at the same time being a serious threat. All the actors had their A game on in this movie. None of them, or the movie, deserved any raspberry awards.
This "built up" thing about the planned trilogy is exactly what they did with the current "Monsterverse"-Run! They kept it relatively "down to earth" with the first movie and to a lesser degree with "Skull Island", built up on that with "King of the monsters" and went up from there until they went totally bonkers with the latest "Godzilla X Kong - The new empire".
"I knew the stupid-tuna eating monster was useless." @@johntuel2375no one is offended. lol And no, just pointing out that a creep made a song with a vaguely creepy title is not the same as a conspiracy theory. Chill
I love this movie. Probably because of the humor and heart. Personally, I think it is better than some of the more recent ones. Especially King of the Monsters. That movie should have been awesome, but the movie really just evolved around a dysfunctional family, while pretty much everyone else, including Godzilla, was an NPC.
Honestly I love this film the ending where Godzilla dies it always makes me cry because he wasn't doing any harm he was just attacking people because they were attacking him plus they killed his babies so what would you do if someone killed your kid would you be happy or angry plus I remember the series that was awesome
O come on here is a tissue dry your tears no the only ones in a bad movie I'm here to tell you this now brace for impact on this knowledge it's not real lol
I LOVE THIS FILM! Great practical and CGI special effects. Great casting. Jean Reno's American accent! A few of the situations were wild and unbelievable but... it's a monster movie. It's all fiction! Do I consider it a 'Godzilla' movie? Yes. It's a reimaging of the character. I LOVE THIS FILM!
Veteran Godzilla actors Haruo Nakajima and Kenpachiro Satsuma, as well as Shusuke Kaneko (who would later direct Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack), were also critical of the film and its character. Nakajima stated "its face looks like an iguana and its body and limbs look like a frog". Satsuma walked out of a screening of the film at fan convention G-Con '98 in Chicago, stating, "it's not Godzilla, it doesn't have his spirit". Toho publicist Yosuke Ogura later called TriStar's design a "disaster."
And Minty was incorrect on the old fisherman that was based on JD Lees, editor of G-Fan magazine. it was the truck driver falling out the door as Zilla picks the truck up.
@@derrickrobertson2317Toho later on retconned Zilla to being a separate kaiju entirely, so yeah safe to say Toho was likely never really a fan of it but let it go through. It definitely made Final Wars way better looking in comparison lol
Nice video. I also remember having a good time while watching this film. Maybe not as good as the original source material, but entertaining nonetheless. Hey Minty...are you aware of the other Japanese giant that actually had a TV series made in Australia, also in the 90's? It's called, "Ultraman Towards the future."
As someone that has watched some of the original Godzilla movies, (I even owned a couple), I liked this this movie. I actually liked the design of this Godzilla more than the original. I do have to admit I would have liked to see more (a more appropriate atomic breath) but I can kinda see what they were going for also. Still overall I enjoyed this movie. I do have to think that if they were to go with another name for the film it might have ended up with a lawsuite for something in the vein of likeness rights or something like that. As far as the young zilla offspring: as someone who watched a lot of nature shows growing up, I anticipated that ending with the surviving egg as it's how that sort of thing works. Ensuring survival of the species and if I had to give one more critique of the film I feel like Dr Nik Tatopoulos would have had that thought too. Of course maybe that's why he found the egg in the animated show. I didn't even know about that show so guess that could be part of it. Personally the fact that this creature is born pregnant makes them a more serious threat than I feel is realized. Especially with how large it gets. I would like to see a sequal for this if done proper like to remember the events of this film, and giving it a proper breath weapon and making it a bit more agressive. I don't think it would be outside the realm of possibility to give it inherited memories or something so that it could know/remember how it's siblings and mother was destroyed and going for revenge. It's been a while but I could have sworn there were three eggs that survived but I'll have to just re-watch it. But having more than one might be interesting especially if they were the antagonist. But ah well. I still enjoy what we got from 1998.
This might sound crazy but this is my favorite Godzilla movie I know that sounds crazy but it did introduce me to the rest of the series and I do like the design of Zika here
Doesn't sound crazy at all. No Godzilla movies that are being made now will ever top this 90s version. A very young Matthew Broderick gave a stunning performance as the lead.
I can't help think Toho approved this Godzilla to somewhat sabotage the movie. That way Godzilla fans would rush and want to see the Godzilla in Toho movies.
Agreed... despite all the negative opinions this is my fav godzilla movie... the original godzilla just doesnt seem scary to me with its upright human like posture ... but this giant iguana looked realistically scary and believeable. I also liked that it was set in the rain cuz i grew up in the desert!
Fun fact the 2 torpedos were so powerful when they hit godzilla they tore off his tough scales so the Godzilla that died of missiles was a weakened one and those missiles are more powerful than regular one since only 2 destroyed the place all the hatchlings were and considering the space and the fact 6 missiles were fired on Godzilla on the bridge and 2 were on the neck and it still took couple minutes until he died 98 is actually pretty tough and determined GEEZE Japan makes the monsters look invincible in body but America makes them tough mentally and in their determination
I long believed Godzilla's chin was a reference to Jacques Chirac's one, the french president who restarted the french military nuclear tests in Polynesia.
Another amazing video ! Could you please do a video on D.A.R.Y.L.. Have you ever done a video on Evolution?? Such a hidden gem . Especially with David Duchovny. It's like Fox Mulder but another story 😂
Godzilla 98 is an action comedy influenced more by Jurassic Park than the Japanese originals. Pretty sure it was made for kids but people expecting a serious Godzilla movie were of course disappointed.
I'm actually very fond of this movie as a kid in 90s the really pushed this hard always like the feel of it just maybe they had better plot I was in hospital recently and it was on TV and I watched it all the way thru honestly just entertaining
One of my favorite Godzilla movies as it would be the most accurate representation of an iguana that was affected by radiation, basically what Godzilla is.
Small correction, Godzilla had never been an Iguana or even a reptile at all prior to this film. He was always either a dinosaur or a semi-aquatic creature that evolved from dinosaurs.
I was 3 years old when the movie came out, but I remember having the DVD and watching it at home and being introduced to Godzilla. I found it fun, exciting, and an all around great movie. When I saw the other Godzilla movies it made me appreciate the realism of this version more. Nuclear tests that mutated a lizard and the lizard is going on a quest to nest. I remember being excited and hoping to see a sequel of people fighting Godzilla’s offspring again with it going on another rampage. I still watch the movie to this day and always stand behind how I enjoy it
I want to see this movie back in 1998 when I was 16 years old and I thought it was only going to the best movie in 1998 finding out ( spoiler alert) that Godzilla is not a dinosaur but a mutant iguana. And also he does not have his atomic breath in this one or as tough.
So I get Minty that you understand Godzilla, but I always found the WHOLE PREMISE silly and so....I LOVED this Godzilla. It was fun and light and freaking fun!
I enjoyed it, although i have a deep love of the original Japanese version (without Raymond Burr). The 1998 version has a lot of great visuals. Love the tail scraping streaks in the buildings. Love the French guys and their gum chewing scene. Not great work of art maybe but a good couple of hours entertainment.
The reason why it flopped was because it was only released in certain cinemas as a deal was made between the movie producers and the cinema chain. When they realised that this failed it went on public release.
I think you are confusing the story! It had the widest release of a film at the time and it was booked on the best screens of each theater for the first 4 weeks of release. The movie bombs and then they were stuck with empty or near empty screenings for the 4 or so weeks.
Way back In the year of 1998 I was 15. By that point in my life I had been a Godzilla fan for the better part of 7-8 years. @@MrDumdumkilla no. No. Sorry. Molesting kids is a problem. Just no.
@@davealaya they didn't say anything about that. They just pointed out that some people make connections that aren't necessary. And they're right. That's how you get the Qanon types.
Stop being easily offended on the internet.
@@johntuel2375no one is offended. lol
And no, just pointing out that a creep made a song with a vaguely creepy title is not the same as a conspiracy theory.
Have you seen the animated series based on the film
@@animezilla4486 I have
@@benjaminvalenti1242 There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being empathetic and feeling the highs and the lows along with the characters onscreen.
@@radish6691 ok no there's isn't but at the end of the day they are not real and there's no real consequences to what happens to them
This is the greatest RUclips channel by far of all time!
I give the thumb up for the real Godzilla for killing bootleg Godzilla in the final war.
The fact we've still not had a Godzilla/Gamera crossover film is a crime. Nice vid, enjoy your content, Mr Minty, nice one \m/,
Hey, hey, hey! I always love Godzilla's flying dropkick from Godzilla vs. Megalon
What are you doing here, McConaughey?!
This is the only Godzilla I know. I liked it❤
I thought he was gonna say Ooo La Laaa like in the Commando episode when Arny dropped Sully!
Interesting timing with this, as I was just watching upside down magic the other day which has Vicki Lewis who is also in this movie :-)
Great video great channel since day one ! Here to support after the last post !!!
Than why did toho approve the design and said that they felt the spirit of godzilla?
@@derrickrobertson2317 Nakajima, Satsuma, Kaneko, and Ogura are four guys. they are not Toho.
Godzilla 1998 was the first Film I ever watched I was a kid but sure it's not close to the character but it's okay as a monster movie.
Loved this film
Nice video. I also remember having a good time while watching this film.
Maybe not as good as the original source material, but entertaining nonetheless.
Hey Minty...are you aware of the other Japanese giant that actually had a TV series made in Australia, also in the 90's?
It's called, "Ultraman Towards the future."
Minty, you da MAN!!!
Totally agree with you my fav Godzilla film one thing I think it needed was more reno
😂
I can't help think Toho approved this Godzilla to somewhat sabotage the movie. That way Godzilla fans would rush and want to see the Godzilla in Toho movies.
I've always enjoyed this movie and defended it for many years. Screw the toxic Godzilla fans who sent me death threats for liking it.
Agreed... despite all the negative opinions this is my fav godzilla movie... the original godzilla just doesnt seem scary to me with its upright human like posture ... but this giant iguana looked realistically scary and believeable.
Ferris Bueller vs Godzilla!
I wish we would've gotten a TIM BURTON GODZILLA MOVIE! I'd still like to see a TIM BURTON GODZILLA MOVIE!
Terrible movie, but a guilty pleasure.
Then it's not the terrible is it?
@shainewhite2781 Absolutely a guilty pleasure.
absolutely its a guilty pleasure
I 2nd that notion. I loved this movie even though it is the worst Godzilla movie.
Guilty pleasure indeed.
Facts definitely a guilty pleasure
I long believed Godzilla's chin was a reference to Jacques Chirac's one, the french president who restarted the french military nuclear tests in Polynesia.
This was underrated! This film was wicked. The soundtrack was awesome.
Loving your vids Minty. But please please do one on Chopper :)
Cuando salió está película me encantó y la vi muchas veces con mi papá
Te extraño mucho papi😢
Another amazing video ! Could you please do a video on D.A.R.Y.L.. Have you ever done a video on Evolution?? Such a hidden gem . Especially with David Duchovny. It's like Fox Mulder but another story 😂
I really like Evolution.
First.
Please do Celtic Pride
Godzilla 98 is an action comedy influenced more by Jurassic Park than the Japanese originals. Pretty sure it was made for kids but people expecting a serious Godzilla movie were of course disappointed.
😂the Jimmy Page and P.diddy collab music video for this is ridiculous
I jammed out to it so hard back then.
I forgot all about that omg.
I bet P 'Diddly' was blown away when he heard some actual music 😂
Can´t listen to this song anymore. P Diddly whispering into 15 year old Justin Bieber´s ears "Your @-ss belongs to me!" Disgusting vile creature.
Loved it!
I'm actually very fond of this movie as a kid in 90s the really pushed this hard always like the feel of it just maybe they had better plot I was in hospital recently and it was on TV and I watched it all the way thru honestly just entertaining
Matthew Brooderick is brilliant in Godzilla 98.😀👍
Off topic you should make a video on 10 things you didn't know about RUclips 😊
One of my favorite Godzilla movies as it would be the most accurate representation of an iguana that was affected by radiation, basically what Godzilla is.
Small correction, Godzilla had never been an Iguana or even a reptile at all prior to this film. He was always either a dinosaur or a semi-aquatic creature that evolved from dinosaurs.
this is literally the ONLY time he's an iguana
I was 3 years old when the movie came out, but I remember having the DVD and watching it at home and being introduced to Godzilla. I found it fun, exciting, and an all around great movie. When I saw the other Godzilla movies it made me appreciate the realism of this version more. Nuclear tests that mutated a lizard and the lizard is going on a quest to nest. I remember being excited and hoping to see a sequel of people fighting Godzilla’s offspring again with it going on another rampage. I still watch the movie to this day and always stand behind how I enjoy it
Broderick drove the taxi in the wrong lane into Zillas mouth, killed it and it's offspring
I loved this movie as a kid. It introduced me to Godzilla. Whenever I go downtown on a rainy day, i think about this movie a lot
I have not seen this version of Godzilla
But heard it was terrible
And also that’s alot of Fish
I want to see this movie back in 1998 when I was 16 years old and I thought it was only going to the best movie in 1998 finding out ( spoiler alert) that Godzilla is not a dinosaur but a mutant iguana. And also he does not have his atomic breath in this one or as tough.
So I get Minty that you understand Godzilla, but I always found the WHOLE PREMISE silly and so....I LOVED this Godzilla. It was fun and light and freaking fun!
The best Godzilla ever!
I have a Japanese neighbor who's an atheist, He doesn't believe in Godzilla.
Trailer was good.... Movie... Meh.
It did it's best
ive been waiting so long for you to do an entry from my favorite franchise, it happens to be zilla 98 but its something😂 thank you minty so much
The reason why it flopped was because it was only released in certain cinemas as a deal was made between the movie producers and the cinema chain.
I absolutely loved the gritty/serious presentation of the original as well as goofball entries into the franchise. And i saw that very same movie teaser that you spoke of at the beginning of the video. Regardless, i knew I was gonna go and see "Godzilla 98" but by no means was I counting down the days till it's release. After purchasing my ticket, picking up a tasty treat and finding a good seat i was ready to see the film. Going in I had set the bar fairly low and had little to no real expectations...........then as the ending credits rolled. A moment or two of silence passed and my buddy turns and says "what the hell just happened? I thought we were suppose to see the new Godzilla movie, not JP : The Lost World 2.5! I should ask for a refund but I'll settle for some free Skittles."" Lol
i thought godzilla 1998 was the sequal of jurassic park lol
but godzilla 1998 is a classic
Zilla was interesting, but it really wasn't Godzilla. It was Beast from 20000 Leagues
