I'm convinced the SMS version was built from a prototype GG version ROM. Things like the music changes (the SMS music can be heard in prototype footage of the GG version), the speed-up music being completey missing, the basic looking character select screen, Sonic being stuck in the rolling animation for the bad ending, the more-obvious ring placements for Act 3s, the bugs exclusive to the SMS version and the seemingly incomplete Act Clear screen seem to point to that.
Don't forget the title screen! That's far different.
The Master System has worse hardware than the Game Gear so it is possible that both versions had the same music but the GG got the higher definition music for most tracks, but I think that the master system tracks are in the Game Gear version unused.
Here's something I found myself:
Complete a level with exactly *10 rings* and less than *22 seconds*, and you will get *999 km/h* and a extra life

There are some differences between master system and game gear:
First off the music, sure it's the same but some tracks have beefed up like Turquoise Hill Zone, Sleeping Egg Zone, and Aqua Planet Zone but some are completely different like Gigapolis Zone and Intro Cutscene.
The Game Gear version change the name of Gigalopolis Zone to Gigapolis Zone.
Game Gear version has some of Act 3 stages of the rings have cut down.
There's even a exclusive unused track that is only at the Game Gear version, that can be found on the sound test.
Some of Presentation has slightly change in the Game Gear version.

12:12 That's the Mirage Saloon mini boss. I love how that boss fight was actually remembered and put into Sonic Mania.
Sonic 1 8-bit's backgrounds were masterpeices of minimalist art. It seems like they were going for that here as well.
4:53 no, it's not out of place, instead it actually makes sense - his tails do not break away from his body and stay in place while body is rotating, if you think about it. And Sonic Adventure follows this thing too

I think Tails loses his tails in the classics because they show, in the 8 bit games, it seems like it is part of his body when he jumps
I didn't realise how many flaws there were until I saw this review on top of the insane lag/slow down. I agree about the story, presentation, artwork, and level layout being all over the place or too simple. I was surprised how Tails's flight control works. It's a shame about the character sprites here and there. Was nice to see the spin dash, super peel out, and special stages implemented in the 8-Bit series. I never understood how the speed works in this game, until the part at 11:12. The effect at 12:15 was amusing. 15:22 was the perfect save to bring on the remake, which was world class ever since the SAGE 2018 demo came out. Everything about it is spot on, apart from the two bugs shown in this video. Either way, looking forward to more updates on this fantastic project.

Also, I think what makes Sonic looks weird in this game it's mostly his spikes along with his face.

I like listening to the soundtrack in 64.00 hz.
The original sonic chaos was my first sonic game ever along with spinball in a plug n play pack, but chaos was the very first. that plug n play put me on the path to the sonic fan I am.
It was the first Sonic game I ever owned.
Me and my dad was at the his friends place and there he had Sonic 1 and 2 for the Master System. Lets say we had a blast, so one say he saw someone was selling an used Sonic game and of course he got it. That is the story how I got Sonic Chaos

I had the ninja game too, and even though I hated always losing on the game, I always had to go back to it.
As for Sonic Chaos, I remember buying this from Argos for £29.99 when it came out. I even completed the game on the first try too (Just like Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive, I used to play these games for hours on end). I thought this was a brilliant game for an 8 bit and I preferred this one to Sonic 2. Ah memories.
15:02 after some examination, it seems the slight momentum from pushing up brought you just a pixel short of the ring's hitboxes after a bit.
the fact that they put in the extra effort to implement the Super Peel Out in a Master System game is insane
Hey! I played the Sonic Chaos remake and changed the logo to "Sonic & Tails", the original title of the game (and it looked BEAUTIFUL, trust me).

I bought a Sonic poster at PAX South thinking it was a legit sonic poster, but I saw it was the sonic chaos box art after reading the manuals on SMCP, with the only difference being it has the sonic 1 title copy and pasted over where it should say sonic chaos. I could say I was quite sad about that, but I really like the sonic chaos box art

I played this via Sonic Mega Collection +. And to be honest, this game is so amazing. But imagine this game getting a remake, like a 16 bit remake.

Actually they call the Super Peel-Out the "Strike Dash" in this game.
sonic's design in sonic chaos is actually was made to look like the mega drive/genesis design but in 8 bit and the same is said with tails.

I really liked this review. Expect one thing.
I dont think that sonic chaos should be treated as a Master System game. It is infact a Game Gear game. With game gear capabilities in mind. With Master System port being an afterthought for european market. Hence why this version has lag issues. It simply wasnt made to work with Master System's higher resolution.
There's a lot I've cut from this (was originally 30 minutes) but one of them was about comparing the game on the Game Gear, and then on the emulator, and then on an SMS emulator, then forcing it to 50Hz as it's technically a European game, etc. All of them lagged, but the SMS was indeed the worse as I kind of mentioned in the review (I said the GG was a tad better). I also agree; I think this was a port to the SMS from the GG going by the art style and on how big the sprites are. Especially when you compare this to S1/S2. But I couldn't find any concrete proof on this so I left it out also.
