Those terrible search results for cooking questions through google has people using alternatives like ChatGPT and TikTok for answers instead. Those search engine model websites are losing traffic and upping ads as a result. I think its a matter of time before that experience is forgotten and we can use something better for answers.
No ads have definitely become more predatory over the past five years. Take RUclips for example introducing longer and more frequent ads. This is happening to so many free sites out there.
yeah i was worried about that given they're discussing the move on the wikia talkpage. iirc the touhou migration was done slowly and kept very much under wraps until it was done, given fandom's tendency to outright mess up the articles so they couldn't be moved. it's ridiculous.
"We don't want them to use other websites for information so let's make them unable to use our website for information so they can't... Get the... Information" -someone at fandom wiki probably
I remember the food ol days when Minecraft wiki was an independent site that did everything on it's own, and I remember the frustration that I had when it was announced it was merging with fandom
same, it was so obnoxious being blasted with ads on my phone when i just wanted to look up a crafting recipe i couldn't remember. hopefully their move goes smoothly
@@nexuhs. i was thinking the same thing at first, i use an adblocker and i dont get nearly as many ads as in the video; although i do do still get a few ads, and even those can be annoying... The problem is, not everyone can get an adblocker; (not every browser/OS allows it) and they dont always work 100% I can imagine that on phones this problem can get a LOT worse, up to the point where you can hardly find the info you want, in between all the ads that take up all of your screen, and since you have to swipe with a phone to scroll down, the chance of a "misclick" on an ad gets that much higher... In the video, it already looked like a nightmare... In short, it's more about the principle. Ads just keep getting worse, and the people who use those websites that keep adding ads, could do something about that, for example by moving to another website, or making your own from scratch. In the meantime, those BS "privacy" laws that made this whole shitstorm even worse, should have been simple: make all 3rd party cookies illegal... THAT is the root of this problem.. I know a guy who makes websites for a living; he NEVER uses cookies, at all... You really dont need them to make a website work, no matter what they tell you... BTW yt also keeps getting worse; despite having an adblocker; 20s ads cant be skipped.. Forcing people to pay up, or be forced to watch ads, is a form of extortion... This should have been made illegal years ago, but i guess rich politicians dont care..
@@zdavrosdamaddruwidzard4728ads on direct videos make more sense. It was like that for TVs for what's almost the same service, then developed to practically the exact same service. Adverts on RUclips are fine, they need to pay the bills. What's not fine is excessive adverts, which RUclips is bad for occasionally. I think RUclips premium makes a lot of sense though. You pay for uninterrupted access to all content on their service for less than a lot of streaming services which don't have remotely as much content and variations. Articles having ads is just getting ridiculous. A newspaper would have maybe 3 per page maximum and half of them would have coupons, modern online newspapers are just videos and ads galore which a majority of are sketchy as fuck. No real incentive for users and no promotions specifically for certain publishers. Just the same shit over and over.
@@OnlyGrafting "They also have to pay their bills" is a silly excuse, imho... It is that exact excuse that they have been using for justifying their excessive ads... I mean, you can use it to justify almost anything... imagine a burglar or assassin or slaver using the same excuse... I have seen this excuse way too often.. And yeah i agree, newspaper websites are the worst; you cant even look up a single article, without being bombarded with ads, and more often than not, you will have to pay for a subscription (which is then hard to get rid of) to actually be able to finish reading the article... Also, most articles these days are ads themselves, or "sponsored content"... And then they are surprised when people are getting their (mis)information elsewhere.. Seriously, capitalism ruins everything...
I’m in a community that decided to move away from Fandom and to a new wiki, and they all decided the best way to get people to use the new wiki is to absolutely vandalize the old one. Pages make no sense, screenshots are replaced with memes, and all sense is thrown out the window.
As a web designer it's so frustrating having a majority of websites these days break guidelines that I was taught while going to school for the profession. I understand wanting to pull in a profit but all they are doing is pushing people towards more ad and popup blockers.
Google is desperately trying everything they can to completely get rid of adblockers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were secretly lobbying certain politicians to try and completely criminalize using them.
Am I the only one who remembers the "old" internet where you were literally bombarded with ADs? Like seriously... people are complaining about 5 ads???
@@Jehty_ I mean from what people are saying yea it was worst back then but in the end it's still bad ... Especially since it target you by what you say or search, def better than viruses but not great at all .
Fun fact! The Minecraft Wiki actually used to be the _official wiki_ for the game (it was hosted on Gamepedia beforehand, explaining the weirder stuff like the interactive crafting table menus), but after Fandom moved all Gamepedia wikis to their own platform, Mojang _literally disowned it_ , and they had to change the logo and remove all mentions of being the "official" wiki. Not too different from when they left Reddit after _that_ platform fell to shambles. (Edit: Wrong original wiki site)
Corrections: The Minecraft Wiki used to be on Gamepedia, which Fandom acquired. Wikia is the former name of Fandom. Mojang disendorsing the Minecraft Wiki had nothing to do with Fandom, it was because Microsoft didn't want to endorse any websites which they did not operate.
@@sopranogame Yeah, Gamepedia was the one I was thinking of. Still, I think the switch to Fandom played some role in them backing out of supporting it since, as others mentioned, Fandom has a history of rolling back Wikis that migrate to other platforms (the Splatoon wiki's struggles with this come to mind) and generally messing with the content in the wikis themselves.
I have my issues with mojang but atleast they have our backs when it comes to not forcing us to use shifty websites Correction: outside of anything Microsoft related
I was curious about this, because I've been playing MC since early 2011 and I swear I remember the wiki being way more official and put together than it seemed lately
I can't believe it's finally happening. When the gamepedia version of the wiki got eaten a few years ago I was *dumbfounded* that there weren't immediate talks about migrating off of Fandom. Other communities have fought Fandom and won, from ones as small as Blaseball to as big as Zelda, there's absolutely no reason for the Minecraft community to settle for the absolute worst wiki experience.
@@MarcTelang Correct. They purchased Curse Media, owners of Gamepedia, from Twitch Interactive in 2018. By 2019 they were working on replacing the Gamepedia framework with Fandom/Wikia.
I’m always happy when big wikis move to their own place when Fandom gets too annoying to work with. Touhou Wiki did it, JoJoWiki did it, Terraria Wiki did it, and now Minecraft Wiki is joining them. I think this could only mean good things for the future. Update: Pizza Tower Wiki, too!
Yes I was just going to recommend that in comments move it to the GG Wiki just like Terraria wikis did too bad freaking Calamity mod hasn't figured out how to get the GG Wiki on the top it's the second search result always I don't know why but okay whatever as long as I get my info I don't want outdated info though
As a Terraria player that keeps seeing the Terraria fandom wiki as first results sometimes even supressing the official wiki from search just because some dumbnuts are still mantaining that dumpster of fire, i wish you as a community good luck placing the new wiki above the fandom one in search

The thing is fandom used to be good when it was wikia, or well it was acceptable, but they changed executives and the company changed a lot while their project fandom started, the team of which alongside other people would take leadership of the company in the end and lead the sites to their current state. In my opinion, the most scummy thing isn't even the ads that clutter the site, but how when people leave their site to build the wiki elsewhere they make mirror wikis that are devoid of content with pages with the minimal information, just so they can still get the ad revenue from people looking for the actual wiki. Worst case of this is with the terraria wiki.
I find it funny at how many ads there are, its like the simple minded goldfishes who were the reason orphans are a thing, are trying to get as much money from ads before they die out
Remember, Fandom/Wikia likes to do a complete lockdown of wikis that are planning to move to prevent absolute chaos and vandalism like some wikis (such as the calamity mod wiki) have done. The fact that the move is being discussed _on Fandom_ is not helping the chances of that happening.
Any fandom wiki admin can just dump the entire wiki into a file, install a new mediawiki server, load that file, and have everything be exactly the same. (Minus any media but sure if that's still true).
@@smpmuzpidTbh, I don't even know how "copyrighting a wiki" would even work in the first place. Sure, it would be a pain in the butt to set up for a new one due having to dodge plagarism-allegations and redoing the formatting, templates etc, but all the info in a wiki is supposed to either be objective fact or public and properly marked subjective interpretation from the public space. A flint and steel is always crafted with a flint and an iron, that information is always going to be the same across any serious wiki-attempt and it cannot go under author-copyright.
Migrating the wikis isn’t ever the problem. The problem is mainly finding and paying for an independent host, and that Fandom will still make money off the old abandoned wikis which people will still click on. Minecraft is lucky to have a large enough fanbase where they can not only split but probably overtake Fandom in usage.
@@smpmuzpid You *completely* misunderstood what I was saying. What I meant is that Share Alike is a enormous help, but it is not the only reason it is possible. The objective information the wiki had already gathered could be moved over regardless(just without the original text describing it), because it cannot legally belong to any wiki. It already belongs to Microsoft(or say, Nintendo in the case of Zelda or Xenoblade) because they own the IPs it is ultimately about.
Terraria also did this not too long ago! The developers decided to create a wikigg and it was one of the best changes ever, everything is smooth and clear now with no distractions, so I'm on full support for this decision. Also because everytime I need to use the wiki it's just a mess because of the fact that the page is half used by the useless ''Recent Images'' and ''Popular pages'', it makes the reading more difficult for no reason at all.

(Courtesy of another commenter) DO NOT ANNOUNCE IT. Simply copy all the pages before any announcements to avoid locking and rollbacks. This will make sure all info is still present while voiding any leverage Fandom has over the community move. Either make pages on the new website with relevant links and info, or put the page contents in a giant document or several small documents and make the pages later
For simpler content, like the actual text of the page, there's also The Internet Archive, which I've no doubt has tens, hundreds, or even thousands of snapshots of the MC wiki

I remember discovering that the Doom Wiki actually did this over a decade ago back in 2011, and it honestly felt like a breath of fresh air to get the hell away from Wikia/Fandom. Glad to see more games are going this direction!
Wikia used to be pretty good. Then it got worse and worse, renamed to Fandom, got slightly better, then got steadily worse, leading to where we are now The Minecraft wiki specifically was definitely better when it was still official, and on Gamepedia (before that was bought by Fandom)
Heh. Get the "hell" away from Fandom... I'll see myself out. Aside from that it's a welcome change. Having an ad blocker myself I didn't realize Fandom was so awful to deal with. I'm sick of websites blasting us with ads at any given moment, so I'm glad people want to move away from Fandom.
Until Fandom buys them like they bought Curse five years ago, getting ownership of Gamepedia They already bought Metacritic and GameSpot (and thus GameFAQs) back in October
I personally love bulbapedia. Just their website theme and usability. Its very user friendly and easy to search and use, I've preferred it over something like Smogon for pokemon info for a long time
This happened with Terraria, and the Calamity mod for it and both of the new official ones are way better due to immunity to griefing and trolling, and overall just look better. Before Calamity switched, someone made a very official looking page for a boss which didn't exist, trolling several hundreds of thousands of people for a few days.

@@anonymousfog501 I mean, it’s community-run, so the misinformation is expected honestly. But from experience, it can really be challenging to maintain a community of active editors.
my only concern is that from what ive heard the whole mc wiki community could be shooting themselves in the foot by announcing and publically holding a vote onsite about potentially moving. fandom REALLY doesnt like wikis trying to migrate to other platforms and they might try and hijack the minecraft wikia and replace all the staff to stop this. if they go through with this (and i sincerely hope they do, fandom/wikia is garbage) they're gonna have to move quickly before fandom staff who dont know anything about the game end up running the place.
i mean, even if they DID replace the staff they wouldnt be able to stop the migration if the majority voted to move as everyone will just move to a new page, with or without the consent of fandom. at best they could stop them from vandalizing the fandom page but they wont be able to stop the move at all

it's still quite bad even with adblocker, since not only is the space of the actual info you need only 3/4ths of a screem... it's load times are massively bloated. And it's worse on mobile.
When I was 14 the fandom (then wikia) staff straight-up assigned a groomer to the wiki community we had as an adopted staff member. The majority of the editors were children. This, on top of all the ads making Fandom absolutely unusable on mobile devices, and insufferable on desktop, puts me firmly into the move category.
I’m so happy about this move, hope it succeeds, because Fandom is insufferable. I don’t mind an ad or two to support the website, but that shit is impossible to navigate.
And then you get one of those "personalized" overlay ads that make you question how the hell it was personal to you while simultaneously trying to click the two pixel large exit button
My phone lags to negative fps due to the amount of ads on fandom wikis. The way ads pop up is far worse there. So tbh I'm all for this change. Putting ads above user experience is the line that should never be crossed.
I feel like the people who started putting a fck ton of ads on the website didn't ever try out the mobile version. It's actually borderline unusable there because of how much sh!t is blocking the screen. Absolutely atrocious.
Kind of intrigued by the idea of Minecraft wiki joining hands with Bulbapedia. Bulbapedia is the most strict yet thorough game wiki I know. And while I've heard that strictness in regards to Pokemon information can be tough to work with, I have high hopes for a Minecraft site that's hosted by them and allowed to manage themselves
We literally _had_ an official wiki outside of Fandom, then we lost it... to Fandom's corporate mergers. This isn't us making a new official wiki, this is us trying to reclaim a place to call an official wiki.
You lost it because Mojang couldn't be bothered to make their own alternative. Fandom may have been the catalyst, but Mojang inaction is what killed it.
I feel this pain as a member of the Doom community, a tale of two Wikies! Fandom HATES when a community leaves, they will never remove the old page. The Doom community used to be on fandom, until the ads came, so they moved to a bespoke site.
Ever since Gamepedia was absorbed by Fandom, MCWiki has been suffering. It's sad to see, and I think a move is both necessary and inevitable. A community as large as Minecraft deserves better than Wikia's successor
The gamepedia version was so good, God I hate fandom. I play this mobile game, Super Snail, and a quick chat with the people making the wiki for it, it's clear Fandom has a LOT of hate from people who contribute to these wikis
I had no idea this happened because I haven’t had to look anything up for awhile. The whole time I was wondering why there was no mention of the gamepedia wiki. This is very unfortunate news 😢
Using a blocker like uBlock Origin is not only a safer internet experience, it might as well be mandatory. Firefox + uBlock Origin is a browser experience I will never abandon.
As a former administrator for the previous Minecraft Fandom Wiki which existed alongside the Gamepedia wiki for many years, this change is actually pretty interesting to me. I still remember when Fandom bought Gamepedia and talks of merging clone wikis sprang up as a result. Two separate wikis on different services for the same game after many years of being separated merging into one was a big deal. I still remember discussing with the Gamepedia team about the merge and how we would go about it which lasted for a couple of months. After the merge, I stopped editing for the wiki as much and eventually leaving entirely. Fandom’s editing staff team was smaller than Gamepedia’s and I was starting to fall off in activity due to real life stuff. I have respect for the Gamepedia team and the amount of information on the Minecraft wiki that is available. The part that’s funny is that history is repeating itself and the community of editors are moving to a different service. So once again the fandom wiki may someday get less traction than the newer Minecraft wiki that is being supported. I wish the editors luck in their endeavors because they do good work and it can be difficult to maintain a wiki especially a wiki at that size.
I was on Fandom back when it was called Wikia, and I loved that place. I wasn't really involved in anything like keeping game information up to date, I was just on one little corner of the place where people wrote roleplays and stuff, but it was still really great. ...Now it absolutely sucks. I remember they wiped the message walls for a bit back when they were changing up the branding, and they made some forum posts inaccessible seemingly at random (unless you had the direct link,) and they added a horrible new feature where you only saw the last 50 or so posts of a discussion at first - you had to spam click "show older messages" to get to the top, and the last time I did that it just broke until I refreshed the page, because I clicked it too fast. It's a dying website, and companies are scavenging its corpse for ad revenue. I hope they make the move.
Before that it was Wikicities and your wiki, if you made one, was basically just like a miniature Wikipedia. Minimal couple of banner ads, no megabytes of JavaScript/popups/tracking beacons from every single ad provider on the Internet/etc. No videos covering the page and following you down when you scroll. They keep changing their name because they're so trash they have to try to escape their bad reputation.
Yeah, around 10 years ago, when Fandom was still called Wikia, I was eating up all the niche Sonic facts I could on the Sonic News Network. Back then I also used other franchise's Wikias. And then all of a sudden I noticed that the name and logo changed from Wikia to Fandom... Then Fandom introduced the articles that popped up on the sides or on the bottom for us to read even if they were things I was completely uninterested in... Then they introduced the videos that would auto-play on the top of the page with someone from Fandom basically reading what users have written in the article the video was on, and it auto-played EVERY TIME. Now the questions about being a kid or an adult, the annoying yellow bar on the side, all the ads... I hope more Fandoms migrate from this hell-hole of a website.
@@QuasarEE Funny thing is, fandom is still technically using mediawiki (the same software that was developed for and is used by wikipedia), they've just bastardized it to the point of unrecognizability.
@@Elycha_ Ohhh YEAH, all the random articles on the bottom... And then completely removing the comment section on articles. That was devastating. (...speaking of devastating, so was that "around 10 years ago," lmaoo. time flies.)
I've dreamed of this happening for every wiki that uses fandom, I hope more and more wikis stop using fandom and uses something that is more user friendly.
I love Bulbapedia and if the Minecraft Wiki moves there and has Bulbapedia style formatting, that would be amazing. I would love for the "fandom" website to entirely shut down so we can have official websites for game information
Sadly, Fandom won't shut down the old Minecraft Wiki. It will still get views since it's high in search results and will still generate ad revenue for them, so they wouldn't want to get rid of that source of income. I'm part of the team for the Zelda Wiki, and we forked from Fandom last October. Fandom still has the old Zelda Wiki up and running and we can't do anything about it. Fandom is strictly for-profit so if keeping the old site up earns them money, they'll do it.
Honestly, after reading the whole discussion, I am more than willing for the wiki to move to Bulbapedia. As for the other comment, that is simply the sad reality of what will happen if we do move.
I mean, I fine with it, but... WHY ON EARTH BULBAPEDIA?!?!? Like, the site was designed for pokemon only, not saying I am against it, but, it just seems odd for me
@@littlevirus3562 They wouldn’t be on Bulbapedia’s Pokémon Wiki itself, it would just be run by the same owners of Bulbapedia and would use the same servers to run the Minecraft Wiki.
I love fandom wikis. They're so great! Just like Skyrim's fandom wiki, which has factual errors that have existed for well over a decade at this point and are the starting point of quite a few misconceptions about the game that still haven't been fixed because any changes to those pages are either reversed or not noticed by the people perpetuating the mistakes.
Congrats. You managed to convince me to login to fandom for the first time in several years to vote because boy has fandom gone bad. I didn't know they were once wikia but I knew of the gamepedia takeover which made me very sad.
I've noticed that old and popular games usually have incredibly detailed and high-effort wikis compared to newer games, so I've always considered it strange how long Minecraft has been using Fandom
I think this is something that we as internet users will simply have to get used to, we see it happening a lot now. Platform starts out amazing, the creators start extorting the user base with bad practices aimed to make more money. Either with extreme use of ads or force users to comply with content moderation. This creates space for new platforms that are better, community moves to new platform, repeat. If communities remain stubborn and stick with bad platforms, that platform will only get worse. For the longterm (well, for as long as the new platform stays good) this is the better choice. Websites are not forever.
Guys, to make it obvious that the migration has happened we can do what Calamity mod did and vandalise the shit out of the fandom wiki. Alternatively, we can be boring and say on every page that fandom wiki is not being updated
please please first option its a special kind of chaos to be looking through fandom pages and every single one you click on is either replaced with a cat meme or the longest keysmash youve ever seen (edit: or the entire bee movie script!)
I am currently an owner of a pretty old Wiki on Fandom, and I've looking about this for a while, but it's certainly challenging as while the community has agreed that we should move it, nobody offered to assist with the migration, it's all me as staff, and it's been mentally discouraging as I've got my hands full with other projects. There was one guy that was very pro Miraheze, and when I took up on his offer to migrate there, I got crickets (I was already discouraged by their Dormancy Policy anyways). Doesn't help that the games that we are focused on are pretty niche/underrated, so we don't have the privilege that Minecraft has with the bigger wikis...
God yes exactly. There's a Fandom wiki that I'm pretty much the sole editor/admin of, and I would really like to move it off this horrible website, but unfortunately I'm not sure it would get _any_ visibility if not hosted on Fandom... and I doubt I'd get any resources to help either, like your case.
I myself recently adopted an older wiki as well, it's very low traffic but honestly for the moment I'd prefer to stay on Fandom, it would be a hassle trying to move to a new site.
@@RR-dh2ub Rain world is absolutely not obscure and (im pretty sure) they didnt even have to migrate anywhere because there already was a miraheze wiki that just needed a bit of a revamp
On the mobile version of any Fandom page, sometimes there will be an ad that pops up that even when you hit the x, it wont actually go away and instead will leave the box where the ad was asking why you didnt want to see it
I do remember the wiki being on gamepedia instead of fandom(until it being merged into fandom just like any other gamewiki), and honestly fandom's experience on mobile phone is even worse as the ads would take up more screen space. would be super happy if we just move out
Wikia wasn't bought by Fandom, they just rebranded. Exact same company. (Technically another company bought Fandom a few years later after the rebrand. But the "Fandom" name happened independently, it was just a rebrand.)
The RuneScape playerbase and even Jagex themselves did quite a lot of good work to discourage the fandom wiki. There were browser plugins that automatically redirected you, which was good for existing links to the wiki that will never get updated. And the subreddits had bots that informed users whenever someone tried to link to a fandom page, with the correct URL instead. But the most useful thing was that Jagex took the initiative to include a link to the new wiki in the game client to make it obvious to everyone. It still took a wee while for the SEO weighting to overtake the old one, but it wasn't long enough to worry about. With things in place that discourages fandom links, it works itself out.
NIWA (Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance) is such a great group of people with community-run wikis and honestly minimal ads and the ones that do exist are like barely in the way. Big up bulbapedia & co.
I used fandom a lot when researching stuff for games and shows, and even I, a completely oblivious person noticed how much the ads were getting. On mobile, they cover half of your screen and make reading stuff a nightmare. Seriously, whose idea was this? We should start standing up for ourselves and stop this anti user nonsense, and I'm glad we're taking a step with this. PS.: You should probably change the title to something like "Good riddance, Fandom", I thought the team behind mc wiki did something bad and they were shutting down lol
As a person who enters the Incrediwiki page on mobile for the name of a polo and will always get bombarded with ads, this would be an amazing change for any game to make. Of course, Fandom could cut out adspace for a better user experience, but that won't happen, Fandom is too big of a website to care about people.
I don't notice ads unless I'm playing a game on my phone and get one, but even I was incredibly frustrated by the sheer amount of ads on the Fandom wiki. I have a slow loading computer and it's so infuriating to go to click on a link to a different page and almost hit an ad that just popped up
not just here in the minecraft community, many other communities are getting annoyed by fandom for quite a while now and some have left fandom all together.
It's harder that it sounds. They'd need to create servers just for the websites, create an account system, find a way to prevent hackers. Creating a website similar to Fandom would be a nightmare to make so using a service that can get those features is easier to do.
The Fandom site does another annoying thing: They remove all mentions of other alternatives on their site, specifically to thwart migrations. I've already seen this be an annoyance for some communities, for example when the wiki for the game Noita was migrating to .gg, the announcement on the main page was reverted and the page locked from editing.
The thing I like about fandom is the fact that pages have a dedicated gallery section. This makes it very easy to find pictures of specific things in games. As far as I'm concerned, none of the other wiki sites have a gallery section. But one thing that's true, is that the amount of ads is just way too much.
It makes it near impossible to copy image links into discord or something, though. And if you try to just save the image, it almost always makes it some arbitrary format or just saves a link to a page instead. even their best feature is broken.
Any content outside of the ads and bloat would still exist on whatever site the wiki migrates to. They will literally download every page and image and upload them to the new host.
I never heard of this but I have used other Fandom wikis. A lot of fandom wikis have moved to their own site or have competitors on other sites like the JoJo wiki
I'd love to make my own server for one specific Fandom, because at the end of the day, you only need a couple gigs of space for PDFs and text docs. Other technical tutorials are often found here on YT. Like seriously, you couple probably fit the entirety of the Minecraft Wiki into a single 100 gig hard drive if you didn't have super fancy interfaces. Redirects are also very plausible with the generous amount of space there is.
FINALLY, I was so confused that out of all the gaming wikis I use, minecraft was the only one that hadn't migrated from fandom yet. Also thanks for the shoutout to runescape wiki, i was watching its migration when it happened and was really happy with how it went. A big part of it though was support and funding from jagex (with the caveat that they cant control it, obviously)
The biggest issue with pointing people on Fandom to a different wiki host is that Fandom strictly prohibits linking to other wiki providers, and if you delete all content of the wiki and direct people to let's say a Discord server, where they can follow an official link on another wiki provider, then Fandom can simply revert the changes, deop the sysops and simply find new people who will be in charge of keeping it updated. People who only know the Fandom counterpart, will keep coming to the Fandom site, not realizing there's an entire community that has moved elsewhere, and there might be a community over on Discord, that might guide you to the correct location (even if the Discord link is in the old wiki, people just want to find some quick informations). Not to mention that those people who stayed on Fandom, will likely keep updating the old wiki, which will make it even harder to just simply move forward and ditch Fandom. Yes, Fandom is a horrible platform and I'm disgusted by all those ads (although, I use adblocker, so it's not a big deal for me). But you have to look at it from a perspective of a person looking for informations. After years of coming back to Fandom for fresh Minecraft knowledge, without any clue of stuff behind the scenes, one simply doesn't have a single idea where everyone moved. After years of coming straight to Fandom for answers, not even using Google for it, this is a habit hard to break.
A lot of community wikis have successfully migrated off of clowndom. It's just a matter of time for the new forked wiki to climb up the SEO ranks. And since MC is such a huge game the new wiki would definitely climb up very very quickly.
It’s even worse on mobile. The video follows you around, has an x button approximately 40 μm in diameter, and quite literally takes up more than half your screen.
This is great!!! The ads covered so much and hopefully this move should fix it for good. On a side note, I hope the wiki can be official again as well.
@@malpkakefirek The tf2 wiki is official and maintained exclusively by community members though, Its official in the sense that valve hosts it but doesnt touch it other than probably assigning trusted members to be admins and such
I have a plugin that auto-hides fandom links in google searches. I am thinking of starting to blacklist, maybe even automatically, the god awful "blog cooking" garbage because I am tired of getting the full history of a dish when I just want to look up good ideas to add to instant ramen. It actually throws me over the edge.
I needed the MC wiki for some more advanced Redstone I was working on, and the sheer amount of ads that occurred was astounding. We had that stupid video ad at the top of every page (you probably know which one I’m talking about, the Minecraft one with the book), an ad that blocked the entire boundary of the screen, making reading some things impossible, and a couple ads for what I’m 95% sure were ads for “adult toys.” The fandom wiki really needs to limit the ads in what they can advertise and how they can advertise if they don’t want everyone to leave.
@@LoraLoibuPretty sure there is a dumb amount of adults ads right on here, RUclips I will not suprised when Fandom have some R18 ads on their sites too
Also completly support the move. I knew the old wiki on gamepedia and there I already experienced how bad fandom wiki is through other wikis. So when I heard the minecraft wiki will become a fandom wiki, I was really disappointed and already suspected what will come with that. So a new and standalone minecraft wiki is really good news.
Fandom was always a whirlpool of ad bombardment But I use Opera so it never bothered me as much so I’m neutral about the change I’ll swap when I forget how to craft an item frame
A possible advantage to forking is that when Gamepedia was bought by Fandom, Minecraft said "this can no longer be called the official wiki" and forking might make them re-approve officialism.
But that only applies if the new host is Microsoft. It's not. It's going to be Weird Gloop. In the second discussion, Minecraft Wiki discussed four potential hosts: ABXY, Bulba (actually Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (NIWA)), RuneScape Wiki (actually Weird Gloop) and wiki gg (it's actually a period, not a space, but I can't include the period because RUclips/PhoenixSc censor links).
This wiki used to be official (it wasn’t made by Mojang, but Mojang recognized it as official) until Fandom acquired it and turned it into the mess it is now
We did the same for the dead cells wiki, we are a small community so all the active editors moved with the wiki and it has been great. We also had support from the devs, they mentioned our move a steam post and contacted fandom to remove the official tag from the fandom wiki, we did an announcement on reddit, contacted some DC youtubers to talk about the move. For most people now the new wiki appears on the top of google searches, most people link to the new wiki or correct people that link to fandom. It takes a lot to do something like this, but more and more wikis are doing this, and I think by doing so, making it easier every time, even if only a bit.
This feels like a *proper* way to protest against such activities ( *cough* Reddit *cough* ). I mean, if you think the desktop version is bad, you haven't seen the mobile version. The worst part is that these same websites will get furious if you use an adblocker.
A fandom I'm in moved to Miraheze a while ago and it is SUCH an improvement. The wiki is so much sleeker and nicer to look at, it's a ton easier to navigate, and there's no ads.
Us over in the fallout community have been doing the same thing, we've started trying to get people over to the independent fallout wiki and getting the SEO to recognize us over the old ad ridden wiki. Just takes time, new wiki is cool too they have a whole subsection for mod authors to make pages about their mods, its seperate from the main wiki so it doesnt get confusing but its cool too have all of the community supported in one place.
what would be really awesome is mojang incorporated the wiki on their own site. It could still be community driven, this would also hugely negate the seo war.
Yeah the seo war is the biggest issue with moving, imo. Like, the terraria wiki is still second to the old fandom one, and it’s been like 2 years or something
I feel like that's a really bad idea, Microsoft's corporate actions would probably drive them down the FANDOM path very quickly, trying to squeeze every last cent off the wiki. Also, they would have complete control over community driven wiki, which is not favorable in my opinion.
@@-FutureTaken- The Doom Wiki is still fighting for ranking after 12 years. Doesn't help that a bunch of counter-culture dorks keep updating the old Fandom site, often times by stealing content I wrote for the independent site. I've sent Fandom a bunch of copyright takedowns for stealing my writing but man it's a pain in the ass to do that constantly.
this is what skyblock did but instead of it being a community fan wiki that moved services the official hypixel staff made an official one with links to it in-game that’s updated and edited by the community and it looks both awesome and comfortable to use
The thing is even: Minecraft wiki wasn't always on fucking fandom. The good old times. They even had pages are the weird alcoholic delirium that led to red power
I've helped a little with the independent fallout wiki when it moved from fandom. Generally it has been a good change, breathed new life and motivation into the wiki, we started it based off of the fandom pages but there was still a lot to change, we're still working on some stuff. It also allowed us to try some new things, such as a dedicated community section. I feel like overall it would be a good thing for minecraft wiki to move from fandom.
it might have trouble with having updated information (like 76 unarmed weapons having one-handed perks in the damage boosting perks section when they do nothing) or in-depth documentation for mods, but even if the minecraft wiki has growing pains like that independent is so much easier to use.
The excessive amount of ads is one of the biggest reasons why Minecraft Wiki is going away from Fandom. This should be seen as a warning on what happens when you allow an insane amount of ads on a single site. I also want to mention the number of scam/malware ads that are sneaking into sites.
Rip the wiki for rn. I recall using the wiki (before fandom), as a way to learn about recipes and what not of new snapshots back then. When you didn't have a recipe book/guide in the game, the wiki was always a great place to figure stuff out. Sad to see the mess to them being done due to fandom.
Mainly use it to figure out game mechanics between java vs. bedrock.. like villager trades and gold farming as examples. Now it's just a pain either way when one gets jumbled from invasive advertisements.
just wait till you use the wiki on a phone 70% of the screen is ads, the video on the top follows you, so do the ads on the left and right and there are ads in the page
I want to note, this isn't just a problem for the Minecraft Wikia but the Fandom wiki site in general. You cannot use this site without adblock, it's that invasive no matter what blog you're on _(and no, Wikia editors don't make a dime from the free content they write lol)._
I acutally had a Fandom account back from 2013-2015. The site always had a kinda lousy layout, trying so hard to be sleek, hip, and modern, but its gotten progressively worse and worse over the years. I wholeheartly support this change, espcially as someone who remembers the old Minecraft Gamepedia, and has a whole skeleton of bones to pick with Fandom's layout outside of the ads.
I hate all the adds on Fandom, but I do appreciate how easy it is to make joke wikis for none existant concepts as well as an easy way to get game sprites.
The Sims Wiki attempted to do this a while back, and it did not go well. Our service provider was kind of failing, and barely anyone knew what was happening. Here's hoping the Minecraft Wiki's better off!
I have made two wikis that I put a lot of work into, and had that work ruined by the sites getting worse over time. One is fandom, the other is Wikidot which has not had a functioning search feature for years. I've not heard of any better options beyond these two before, so I'm very interested to know which ones the Minecraft fandom thinks is best. Keep us updated, because I'd love to be able to move to a site that runs better. Neither of my wikis have breached 1000 pages, so I think the time spent will be worth it.
Those terrible search results for cooking questions through google has people using alternatives like ChatGPT and TikTok for answers instead. Those search engine model websites are losing traffic and upping ads as a result. I think its a matter of time before that experience is forgotten and we can use something better for answers.

@@nexuhs. i was thinking the same thing at first,
i use an adblocker and i dont get nearly as many ads as in the video;
although i do do still get a few ads, and even those can be annoying...
The problem is, not everyone can get an adblocker;
(not every browser/OS allows it) and they dont always work 100%
I can imagine that on phones this problem can get a LOT worse,
up to the point where you can hardly find the info you want,
in between all the ads that take up all of your screen,
and since you have to swipe with a phone to scroll down,
the chance of a "misclick" on an ad gets that much higher...
In the video, it already looked like a nightmare...
In short, it's more about the principle. Ads just keep getting worse,
and the people who use those websites that keep adding ads, could do something about that,
for example by moving to another website, or making your own from scratch.
In the meantime, those BS "privacy" laws that made this whole shitstorm even worse,
should have been simple: make all 3rd party cookies illegal...

And yeah i agree, newspaper websites are the worst; you cant even look up a single article, without being bombarded with ads, and more often than not, you will have to pay for a subscription (which is then hard to get rid of) to actually be able to finish reading the article...
Corrections:
The Minecraft Wiki used to be on Gamepedia, which Fandom acquired.

In my opinion, the most scummy thing isn't even the ads that clutter the site, but how when people leave their site to build the wiki elsewhere they make mirror wikis that are devoid of content with pages with the minimal information, just so they can still get the ad revenue from people looking for the actual wiki. A flint and steel is always crafted with a flint and an iron, that information is always going to be the same across any serious wiki-attempt and it cannot go under author-copyright.
Migrating the wikis isn’t ever the problem. Fandom Minecraft Wiki: Was I a good website?
Reaper: Depends. Minecraft? Fine. Fandom? Fuck that. Straight to hell.
my only concern is that from what ive heard the whole mc wiki community could be shooting themselves in the foot by announcing and publically holding a vote onsite about potentially moving. fandom REALLY doesnt like wikis trying to migrate to other platforms and they might try and hijack the minecraft wikia and replace all the staff to stop this. if they go through with this (and i sincerely hope they do, fandom/wikia is garbage) they're gonna have to move quickly before fandom staff who dont know anything about the game end up running the place.
i mean, even if they DID replace the staff they wouldnt be able to stop the migration if the majority voted to move as everyone will just move to a new page, with or without the consent of fandom. at best they could stop them from vandalizing the fandom page but they wont be able to stop the move at all

Same here, the wikia time was golden

You should reach out to NIWA or one of the other gaming themed wiki hosts. They might be willing to help.
On the mobile version of any Fandom page, sometimes there will be an ad that pops up that even when you hit the x, it wont actually go away and instead will leave the box where the ad was asking why you didnt want to see it
I do remember the wiki being on gamepedia instead of fandom(until it being merged into fandom just like any other gamewiki), and honestly fandom's experience on mobile phone is even worse as the ads would take up more screen space. would be super happy if we just move out
I preferred wikia, which has so much less ads and was less intrusive. when fandom bought wikia, I was devastated.
Minecraft Wiki (this one) used to run on Gamepedia, basically just like Wikia, and they got bought by Fandom as well, which is not great.
RuneScape and osrs wikis are the best

As far as I'm concerned, none of the other wiki sites have a gallery section.
But one thing that's true, is that the amount of ads is just way too much.

0:08 I was actually one of the first people to showcase this game- let's just say it was nearly 4 hours of hell.
5:10 You’re forking with me, right?
Glad this move is taking place. Fandom has always been a pain to navigate.
