Definitely getting this. I’ve switched from my macbook air to my iPad about a year ago and it’s honestly been the best decision I’ve ever made for my electronics. The iPad is so much more accessible and easy to use as a visually impaired person. For the ways I use it, it is infinitely superior to any laptop or mac I’ve ever had. I’ve never owned an iPad keyboard tho, so I am excited to give it a try and get the full laptop experience with the accessibility of an iPad. If it works like expected, I migjt get rid of my macbook air altogether.
I just purchased the iPad Pro 12.9 inch with the magic keyboard. I still have my 10.5 inch iPad Pro, and I will say this 12.9 inch iPad has been the weirdest iPad for me. I am treating it more of a laptop rather than an iPad. I am usually carrying my iPad around. Guess my old iPad Pro will be the iPad that I will read books
😳 🤩 This video was more helpful in me making my decision than every single online reviewer PERIOD! The visuals and how thorough you were cannot be overstated. I had a gift card and a family member’s employee discount, so I got the iPad 12.9”, magic keyboard, and Apple Pencil for $1,056 with tax included, but was thinking that I could save some money and just get a regular keyboard with mouse, but I believe this video helped me understand why what I ordered was the best option. Thanks again! SUBSCRIBE!!!!!
In laptops, all the weight is already in the base, so they’re stable on your lap by default. In tablets, all the weight is in the screen. If you want to achieve any stability with that floating design where the tablet is pushing on the top of the case rather than on the base, the base will need to be heavy, probably at least matching the weight of the screen. Otherwise the whole contraption would tip over all the time and people would complain about the terrible experience.
When you go to close it lid down laptop style, I wish it didn't fire down so fast. That's definitely gonna make me paranoid. Looks great overall though - already ordered one for my 11 inch just gotta wait for it to get here now...
For those who have lesser iPads (I have the Air 3), it would be nice to get your impression on all the new Logitech Combo Touch keyboards. They’re much cheaper and have all the features (and more) of Apple’s offerings. Also, I don’t understand the weight issue. Sometimes the differences in weight between devices and accessories are marginal. It’s like if a new laptop is a pound heavier (roughly 453 grams) than a previous model, people won’t buy the new version because it’s “too heavy”. We are becoming a world of total wimps. A society of delicate butterflies unable to conjure up the needed strength to deal with marginal weight increases in modern tech. Poor babies! Until it’s safe to go to a gym, doing some basic calisthenics around the house can help with those additional ounces/grams you have to deal with. Seriously, why is this even an issue? Love your channel. Subscribed.
I pulled the trigger on the iPad Pro 11” and magic keyboard. I love it, I use it as a second device. I’m an educator, so it fits my needs for a second device while in an eLearning environment.
My soul nearly left my body when you held the iPad by the case, upside down. I KNOW the normal folio for my iPad Pro 2018 would never hold on. Definitely gotta pick up the magic keyboard.
Still very concerned about the durability of the material for that price since its the same material as the Folio that others have said ages horribly. If I have to have a case over a case to protect it longer term, then it's not really a protective case.
No it’s not. It’s aluminum hence the weight with all the technology in the scissors switch keyboard that is backlit with the advanced trackpad and USB-C port for charging plus strong magnets in the upper portion to hold the iPad in place with smart connector pins. Very sturdy with good build quality. Your iPad floats above the keyboard.
After 2 years I finally broke down and bought the Magic Keyboard and man, why didn’t I do it sooner?? I freaking love this thing. Ordered from target and picked up at the store and saved $50. It’s still pricy for a keyboard, but I love it. I love how easily you can take the ipad off when needed. Previously I had the Logitech Smart Folio and I loved it because you charge it separate from the ipad and one charge lasts 3 months, however it not nearly as easy to take the ipad out of the Smart Folio.
Interesting. I guess it depends on individual case use but I’ve ordered a magic keyboard but I’m not sure it’s going to be right for the way I use my iPad Pro.
Hi, i was wondering did the magic keyboard significantly drains your ipad battery? Mine the 12.9 2020 using the magic keyboard drains 32% for 1 hour of usage of Notion apps..
Probably one of the best reviews I've watched for a while, ESPECIALLY showing how the magic keyboard is on a lap... for a laptop replacement!! Subscribed!
Everyone always thinks that I'm crazy but I prefer a mouse to a trackpad. Trackpads are cool but mice just really are more productive. Thanks for showing mouse stuff in your video as well. I wish the Magic Keyboard had function keys.
Tan Yao Guang agree with you completely. The issue is people are judged too harshly for color. So black is associated with professional. If they had colors for the type cover, people would still buy the black one. Just look at the surface type covers. They have some muted colors, like blue cobalt, or maroon red, and even ones for every American football team, but everyone gets the black one. I would view any of those covers not childish or too bright at all. Who knows if this black thing goes back to our dang western Puritan mindset, but reality is crap tons of people really like the black color. Just talk to auto guys too and they would rather have the black super car over the blue or yellow one.
Um. Hold on to your seat. It’s coming if rumours are correct. 2020 WWDC and iPadOS 14 will see professional apps from Apple rolled out to take advantage of all this new hardware. FCPX,Logic and Xcode just to name a few. I can see Microsoft and Adobe following suite once the floodgates are open.
I am getting it for the light up keyboard. Touch typist that I am, I still find it challenging to type in the dark as I dont know all the keys. So looking forward to that and a keyboard that doesn't feel like I am typing on cardboard.
Add up the cost of both the iPad Pro and the new Magic Keyboard. Now connect it either through hardwire or screen mirroring to an external 16:9 screen or projector. That 4:3 aspect display seems to let the air out of the “Pro” balloon and just may be the most expensive combo that doesn’t support native 16:9 aspect external display. And while this may be ok small businesses that really have no need for conference room presentations, it can be a show stopper for most corporate “ Pro” customers.
The extra weight is intentional and important. It acts as a counter balance and prevents the setup from rocking and possibly tipping over. Imagine your ipad rocking back everytime you tap the screen, or completely falling of your lap.
Thanks Sara, the tips REALLY helped especially in setting up my MX master 3, i just got My Magic keyboard today, so excited to enjoy it. Keep up the great videos, have been a long time fan and absolutely love your content :)
So you can Use PDF Expert and Notability Apps with the pencil and the magic Keyboard at the Same time? Other Reviewers said That its not compatible ...
I assure you....making sure their new keyboard is compatible with the 2018 ipads...was not altruistic. They are maximizing their profits. They are definitely going to sell more that way...infact, alot of people will probably just buy the keyboard to make their current ipads feel new. Quite Brilliant.
Excellent review Sara! I like how you reviewed the iPad mouse experience and integrated that into the keyboard review. Also like the comparison to industry 2 in 1 landscape. Getting my keyboard later today hopefully.
I wasn't going to get a Keyboard Case because they are all on the flimsy side. But this Magic Keyboard made me make a Purchase. I have to have it. I purchased the Ipad Pro Magic Keyboard, an Apple Pencil 2 gen, and the Screen Protector. I'm hoping I don't lose the Apple Pencil, I will see if they can include it in my Apple Care cause it seems like it will be the first thing that gets lost unless that magnet is stronger than I think.
I THINK that with VNC Remote you CAN edit videos from iPad Pro in DaVinci Resolve on your MacBook Pro. Viewing this possibility, no iPad yet. Thank you for a fantastic review!
It's actually similar weight as the Apple MacBook Pro 13" which really is not heavy at all considering that you have such a quality backlit magic keyboard with a trackpad. Super nice Apple ... Also considering the versatility that you get from the iPad Pro 12.9"
Very peachy review! I've been using the logitech "slim" folio on my 2018 12.9" Pro for a while but this seems like a great upgrade for me to make in a few months time. The weight is pretty much the same as the logitech so it seems like a logical next step for me to take.
@@haramizuki09 I have this feeling that there will be an update on this. Perhaps hold down the command button and a little selection bar will pop up on screen to let you now which number key to hit while holding down command? Only time will tell. Fingers crossed a workaround will be implemented.
Great review Sara, I'm looking into getting the keyboard for my 11inch. Was also wondering what app are you using on your phone as an external monitor for your camera?
Nice review. Definitely considering upgrading my old iPad Air (still usable, but definitely showing its age and slowing down) for a new 11" iPad Pro. The keyboard/trackpad (and pencil) seems like a really neat way to make the iPad more functional. My one concern/hesitation about it is the case's durability. I've currently got an Otterbox case around my iPad and I'm reasonably confident that case has saved my iPad the couple of times I've dropped it. Would this case be similarly protective? Is there a way to add a protective case to this?
Best review I have seen so far. I can see the purpose of this if I'm say researching a project and using OneNote or even Microsoft word with 1 tb iPad pro. I'm not sure if I would put it on a smaller iPad as it seems a bit Overkill. As far as weight goes, I'm not a gram weenie like alot of people are. If I'm going to use this as an on the go solution, I'm carrying it in some kind of shoulder bag with everything I need including a multitude of dongles and a few Anker batteries to keep me working as long as I need to. I hope you do a long form vid on the movements for using the trackpad, I barely caught what you said. I haven't got my iPad yet and I know doggone well I will need some help with it. I have only had one Apple device and that was an iPhone 3 back in the day........
I am using Microsoft One Note on a new iPad with the magic keyboard. When I am on a page attempting to type, typing works fine, but when I hit the space bar, the cursor jumps to the search window and does not put a space into my text! What am I doing incorrectly?
Ordered release day for 2020 iPad Pro 12.9. Waiting for 4/24 - 5/1 delivery. A bit bummed it doesn't fold ALL the way back. But it's BACKLIT .. so I'm good!👊🏾🤷🏽♀️❤️
Is it easy to bend with the iPad? This set up cost 2 grand. Just not sure if it’s worth it as in how long will it last when put to everyday task like in n out back pack and opening and folding and bending when attached to back pack any info on this topic?
The iPad pro I want it s the 256GB 12.9 inch... 1100 + pencil 129 + keyboard 349 + apple care.. not sure how much not to include taxes.. right under 2k... I can't pull the trigger! It's driving me crazy lol anyways great video and thx for the in depth keyboard review.
one very important feature with this set up is the Seamless workflow with other apple devices. continue work from your iPad and pick it up on your Mac, MacBooks, iPhone, other iPads. This is where Apple smokes the competition.
I think my issue with the iPad Pro as a laptop is, iPad os is nothing more than a beefed up ios. thats all it is and its not bad by any stretch. its just that can never replace mac, linux or windows for auctual work. the pros, the people that the ipad pro is trying to sell itself to. its fine but it wont replace windows ever for me.
I have the 2018 11" iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard. I'm surprised at how well it works as a laptop replacement. I'll be upgrading to the 2021 12.9" Pro + MK in a few weeks. Still might get the 14" MBP later this year, tho. Great video! You've got a new subscriber!!
Has anybody experienced lag/slow response while typing using this magic keyboard? Mine is driving me nuts on iPad Pro 11”, the response is extremely slow on latest iOS and didn’t find any useful solution. We tried the keyboard on another iPad and found it working great, any thought of what might be wrong?
The weight is not great, but if it was lighter it wouldn't work and the entire structure would just feel flimsy. I'm a guy who is very used to take the iPad Pro out of the cover when i go moving around the house/office, so this is great for me (the purpose of the cover me for me is storage, when I'm moving around in the street/car or when I stop using it). Much more problematic is the price. I was hoping for 300 euros in Europe for the cheaper one but no, 340 Euros (0,92 euro = 1 USD). 300 would have been instabuy, but 340 is really stretching me ... not my wallet (if money was a problem I wouldn't have bought a Pro to begin with), but what I think this is worth.
SAME THING! Got it today, didn‘t know that it didn‘t fold further. X-/ The keys are great however, the trackpad as well. Combined the ideal thing for RDPing into WIndows machines, which I do quite often.
If you open the case all the way, then push the iPad back so it falls over. You can then spin the case around to face you. It’s now in a position to take notes.
Even without the gestures, using a mouse is pretty good. I once tried a simple 2 button mouse (+ scroll wheel but click was not recognized), and the experience was pretty much a computer, I didn’t mind click and drag to side scroll, and you forgot to mention that you can set up one of the buttons to open the assistive touch menu, which gives you many options, and also HOT CORNERS, this is a game changer when using a mouse on iPad, a quick move to position the cursor in one of the corners for half a second and you get to do 1 of 4 actions that you can set up. I do it like this: top right control centre, top left notifications, bottom left multitasking and bottom right home, it’s as natural as doing the gestures on the screen itself. If portability is not your main concern, just get a wireless mouse and keyboard, it will be cheaper and about as good
Sara Dietschy you can reduce the dwell time to 0.25 seconds. Still not as good as gestures, but considering that you can get mouses pretty cheap... and you just need to move the cursor all the way to the corner really fast, it doesn’t require any accuracy whatsoever, so I think it is pretty straightforward and efficient
Are you counting down the days where the intro will have to change? The day where Hill cancels the Rhyme... I think about this every time I hear you say your intro. Annyyyways back to the video! :)
I think bringing up Microsoft doesn’t give the iPad enough credit. Remember the surface is running windows... so they just has to integrate “touch” on a desktop.. the iPad has a completely different OS from Mac OS. A much better feat and you are running the Apple ecosystem somehow Folks forget that. Loved the review! I’m trying to watch as many as I can to see if I want it or not! Thank you for your viewfinder😀
The case looks cool but I would most likely get the 11 inch and the case doesn't seam to have a lower position in which to us pro create and other graphics apps for art in an ergonomic way, which is a shame. Considering that my iPad 10.5 £13 case does and is still going strong it's a no.
How about a double click to highlight @ 8min, whereas move finger from start of what need to highlight, to end of highlight region. Then fine adjust Keep up the good work hey
You should compare this to the Pixel Slate with Pixel Slate key keyboard/pen. I know it's older now but comparing Chrome's vision to Apple and Microsoft would be nice. In my view, Chrome OS is ahead of the curve (for the most part).
On slide over, you can use a three finger swipe to go between apps :-)
Oh snap!!!!!!!!!!
Surface: Completely configurable trackpad gestures, will do just about anything you want.
Jesus is the Christ
How do you make slide over go away with just the trackpad? I cant figure it out
@Ghost227 Move cursor toward the far right of the screen to have slide over appear and the same to go away.

It’s backwards compatible for a simple reason; the 2020 iPad Pro is exactly the same as the 2018 except for a few extra cameras
And Lydar sensor. The 5G iPad Pro with micro LED is coming next year.

Great video Sara. Hope you and John are both safe and well
one very important feature with this set up is the Seamless workflow with other apple devices. continue work from your iPad and pick it up on your Mac, MacBooks, iPhone, other iPads. This is where Apple smokes the competition.
Just got mine good gawd is this trying sweet and boy does it transform my iPad
Can you unlock the iPad pro with the magic keyboard without touching the screen?
Has anybody experienced lag/slow response while typing using this magic keyboard? Mine is driving me nuts on iPad Pro 11”, the response is extremely slow on latest iOS and didn’t find any useful solution. We tried the keyboard on another iPad and found it working great, any thought of what might be wrong?
Excellent video. I truly enjoyed your most informative demonstrations. Thank you..
I think this would be great for movies and RUclips, and good to take off for different types of games.
I bought the Logitech Folio touch for my IPad Pro 11 and it’s better than magic. Unfortunately, it’s only available in the 11 size now.
Dang the mx master functionality with the iPad is actually pretty nice!
Terrific video Sara and answered all my questions; thank you!
Great vid, keep them coming. Thanks!
Hi
I have an Ipad Pro 11 2018
Which mouse should i buy for it?
Apple Magic Mouse 2 or Logitech Mx Master 3??
Quite a bummer to find out the hinge doesn’t fold all the way, need to take it off the case for note-taking...
Not just for note taking, but using the ipad in vertical orientation is not an option either.
SAME THING! Got it today, didn‘t know that it didn‘t fold further. X-/ The keys are great however, the trackpad as well. Combined the ideal thing for RDPing into WIndows machines, which I do quite often.
Yep. I do real estate and coaching and it doesn't seem to be a good fit for many of us. Kinda sad, kinda excited cause that's $329 I can keep.
If portability is not your main concern, just get a wireless mouse and keyboard, it will be cheaper and about as good
I tried hot corners but found dwell control extremely annoying is there a way to do it without dwell?
Sara Dietschy you can reduce the dwell time to 0.25 seconds. Still not as good as gestures, but considering that you can get mouses pretty cheap... and you just need to move the cursor all the way to the corner really fast, it doesn’t require any accuracy whatsoever, so I think it is pretty straightforward and efficient
subscribing to you to find out which is the best 2-in-1 laptop replacement experience :)
Are you counting down the days where the intro will have to change? The day where Hill cancels the Rhyme... I think about this every time I hear you say your intro. Annyyyways back to the video! :)
nice kitchen love the color scheme
This is the best review I’ve ever seen. 👏🏽
How the heck did you get one already? Apple Store says not delivered until mid May
I think bringing up Microsoft doesn’t give the iPad enough credit.
Your videos are very enjoyable and provide excellent insight!
Wish they made this for other iPads. So cool!
The case looks cool but I would most likely get the 11 inch and the case doesn't seam to have a lower position in which to us pro create and other graphics apps for art in an ergonomic way, which is a shame. Considering that my iPad 10.5 £13 case does and is still going strong it's a no.
Great video. I kind of miss the "return" button found on both my android phone and on programs in mac OS.
How about a double click to highlight @ 8min, whereas move finger from start of what need to highlight, to end of highlight region. Then fine adjust
Keep up the good work hey
You should compare this to the Pixel Slate with Pixel Slate key keyboard/pen. I know it's older now but comparing Chrome's vision to Apple and Microsoft would be nice. In my view, Chrome OS is ahead of the curve (for the most part).
Anyone else notice a pretty significant hit on iPad Pro battery use with Magic Keyboard? Its not that big of a deal, but def noticeable.
