  • For episode 56 we head back to “professor” John Callies’ shop for a lesson on lifters and bushings.
John breaks down how lifters play into the quest for more horsepower and why they used to fail so often. He also shows us the difference between needle and bushing bearings, why bushings give better load distribution and bearing capacity, and secret behind keyed lifters.
Finally, John provides us with look at the technology that goes into creating a lifter that makes an “oil wedge” that provides better oil distribution for the lifter whether it’s for racing and/or street applications.

Bushing roller cam and lifters with key or pin locators have been around since Noah was a boy, circa GM Detroit Diesel for example its only in recent times that automotive performance has adopted roller designs and then plain bushing rollers in lifters.

Good stuff, but if you are running a Hemi alcohol or fuel block they do not have pressurized oil to the lifter. I have been told I cannot use a bushed style lifter.

What about the older model non Mamba bushed lifter any thoughts on pro's and cons Vs the newer lifter.

THIS video is one of the MORE informative sensible teachings on physics dynamics on ALL YT about the RRA needle bearing failure phenomenal topic. It is applicable ALL across the board on ALL RRA with trunions.
NONE are exempt from these “physics” issues, it’s all a matter of your cam profile affecting needle bearing life span!
And the oil of course! R-R-R-R.

Isky has had the non-needle bearing bushed lifters out for awhile now. Is Morel just copying Isky?

Morel developed and patented bushed lifters in the 80s. They pioneered it.

Its funny how Harley Davidson never used needle bearing lifter.

They do and they do have roller needle failures.
