The Ferrari 288 GTO is the LaFerrari of 1984

- Wake up, walk down to the garage, and hop in your Ferrari: if there was a 288 GTO a few paces away, wouldn’t it be more effective than caffeine? This is our new series, Morning Coffee, and it just had to kick off with a furiously turbocharged supercar that people recognize more from posters...but not after you see this.
The Ferrari 288 GTO was the company’s first real production engine to use turbocharging for outright performance, with byproducts including wastegate swooshes, flames spitting from the exhaust, and 400 horsepower. Lighter than the 308 series and utilizing advanced components like Kevlar in its construction, it’s a Group B car that simply was never able to compete in anger.
Too bad then, but not now: all 288 GTOs made are street-legal, and can be fired up in much less time than an espresso. Does your idea of a morning jolt have a Prancing Horse on its flanks?
Thanks to @ferraricollector_davidlee + ferraricollectordavidlee.com for the use of his beloved 288 GTO.

David Lee is everywhere. Always great to see someone who drives all their vehicles. That said, we need more! The video is too short.
Yep: big respect for Lee, who seems to view his Ferraris as _cars_, meant to be driven with passion and joy, not just investments.
Most people won't recognize how much more work you have put into that
yeah eh? it has insane quality of filming, editing and sound design.
Don't know about you all, but this little film was astonishing! Increadible editing and filming, guys!
One of my favorite You Tube Videos!
gotta agree with u @jhoffis
@@turbonemesiz5413 My go to video after a tough day at work!
My favorite Petrolicious video EVER! Absolutely captures the power, the beauty, the glory, the passion that IS Ferrari.
I am a simple man. I see Petrolicious uploaded a new video and I click like.
lol thumbs up man
Same.
me too...
9gager ?
No. I waste enough time on the internet the way it is, I don't need any help
:D
1:18 ey yo that's our boy David Lee!
I was expecting a full video on David lee's 288GTO
instead we got a used Ferrari commercial. -_-
The hell was that? What happened to the Petrolicious quality films with the storyline of the car and the driver? That was a short and lame commercial for a used Ferrari. Hopefully they won't do any more of these otherwise it's useless subscribing to their channel.
leno never did the 288 did he?
***** I don't see it Victor. I watch it all the time. Could you provide a link to that one?
he only did the 275 GTB/4
i thought porn wasnt available on youtube
nikcupmwxo yeah, this is pure sex with a car. Love it
You're right! lol
busted two nuts, son
Damn!!
The shear sexyness of the 288 GTO is breathtaking!
Great job David Lee, I felt I was in the driver's seat. The video pulls the viewer in. I would also like to see a Petrolicious full version with Lee talking about this 288 GTO.
Nick
For sure!
Why is everyone hating on this video? I love the normal Petrolicious videos as much as the next guy but this video was freaking awesome. Even if it was a commercial it was tastefully done, I wish more heart was put into a lot of the advertising that we are bombarded with today. Great cinematography and editing. Bravo guys!
Possibly my all-time fav Fezza. The looks, the sound....classic Italian beauty.
This video was perfect. No talking. Just sound. Mike drop. Now do a vid on an Alfa Romeo with the Busso V6. Same thing - just want to hear that engine and see it scythe along gorgeous scenery. THIS is why I am subscribed.
How about the SZ? Il Mostro. Hasn't been showcased on this channel yet.....
Ryan Wolsey great minds think alike. Was just the gem I was thinking - unique, a story to it, and oh that sound.....makes me miss my Alfa.
+ChaosphereIX maybe a gtv6, but with a zender bodykit!
Or a 75 v6!
To be honest, every Alfa would be fantastic in my opinion :)
Florentin Mayon I would lend mine if they want it - modded 155 2.5 V6. She loves to scream - sounds like the first video on this channel. But even my baby is kinda unworthy of the gems on this channel - true unicorns.
I would love a video of a GTV6 and GTV 916
Love it. I think you guys should make more films in this style. Quick. Tough. And straight to the point.
So basically a neighbor of mine has had this really old Ferrari that he always kept covered up on the driveway, whenever we would drive passed his house I'd always think "what kind of Ferrari is that?" and my parents would always tell me it was just another old entry level Ferrari that's worth nothing. Well today I finally found out what was hiding under that cover....
Admire whomever has kept these cars. This was the era when Ferrari ruled the world. This car is nuts.
I found this beautiful. The pure enjoyment of driving, hearing the sounds and having a wonderful view.
288 GTO.
The only car which I can sincerely say looks better than my 1991 ZR-1...
Thanks for the inspiration and keep on trucking!
You never fail to amaze with high quality content.
This is some serious, movie grade footage.
One doesn't even need to like cars to enjoy your videos. They're just so aesthetically pleasing!
Whoa. What a video, and whoever shot and edited that my hats off to you. Literally felt like I was there in the moment experiencing it.
Funny story.
In 1985 I was living in Geneva Switzerland, and had to bring my 1976 Ford Fiesta in for the government vehicle inspection.
. At the inspection place you pulled your car into a line, first come first served, then when it was your turn they would pull it in for an inspection over a floor pit, followed by a short test drive.
Well I happened to get on line behind a 288 GTO, and after the visual inspection they took it around the test loop not once, but three times.
Then they inspected my little Fiesta, and after the test drive they pulled up on the hand brake really hard and snapped the cable, then said. "your car fails"
I'm convinced this was because they were still pumped up from driving the GTO with its heavy controls.
This has been my dream car for as long as I can remember. Shame it is such a short video. More please!
Petrolicious...
Thank you very much for bringing this Italian beauty so alive in this video..
I really enjoyed it! The sound, the speed, the beautiful roads..
And the fact that the video was short, it gives the most emotions...
Grazie mille! 😊 Cari saluti.. Patrizio
I love this car too but....
We had one in the late 80s, it never worked and constantly had issues so my dad sold it to his work colleague... who had nothing but problems with it and sold it to another work colleague.
This repeats about 4 times and has now become a bit of a legend offshore (hence how they afforded it!) who would of thought it would of become so valuable and treasured in the years that have passed.
Petrolicious doesn't need to have tacky commercials like these. You are above this!
Agree. Nice car, cheesy video.
What?! That video was awesome. I wish I had a video like this of my car, even IF I drove a POS.
Kill the music, leave the exhaust note front and center. Instant want.
crappy commercial? It was awesome! i just bought 2 288GTO's
The commercial was actually pretty good! Great for sharing on social networks. So go do just that m'kay
Short, sweet and to the point. This is why this is one of the best channels on youtube.
This car was the poster that hung in my bedroom in the 80's and early 90's. Damn I love this car.
The most beautiful video i've ever seen... the landscape, the music, the car, the engine sound, just perfect...
David Lee bought this very rare (used but like new - one of 272 ever made) car in Italy for less than a million. Nowdays this car is worth more than 4 millions !!
I expected one of these awesome and charming videos of Petrolicius, but this kind of Fast & Furious trailer left me a bad taste in my mouth. The car is a legend and a beauty (and a beast) at same time, but in this footage it seems like a noisy car driven by a new rich.
I mean, would you rather see a video of a 288 GTO driving at 25 mph, or see a video of one being pushed to its limits, as it was designed for?
Respect for David Lee… He treats his cars as cars and not museum pieces...
WTF is with all the negative comments on this? Holy shit this was phenomenal! Don't get me wrong, I love the laid back videos, learning about different cars and their owners, but having a video take a completely different turn once in a while is a nice change. This was incredibly shot and edited. Could not have enjoyed this video more. Thumbs up @petrolicious!!!!!
Max Solish watched and enjoyed
I expected a video about a 288 GTO, not a short commercial.
you never know the effort of putting this much cinematography.
@@deneb6139 Exactly! Masterpiece!
without doubt, the most stunning car ever made, and completely and utterly timeless!
This and the Miura both art masterpieces
My first Ferrari love. While the Countach has faded from my list of dream machines, the GTO has not, and off anything, has become more present. Thanks for the great video.
We had a 288 GTO & and couple of F40s on the floor in a store I used to work in in the early '90s. A fairly successful business man and his wife were visiting San Francisco and stopping in to see what we had. He had owned a couple of different Ferraris up in Salt Lake City and he was looking for something different. He looked and the F40, sat in it for a few moments and then moved over to check out the GTO. He turned to his wife and very seriously stated that he felt the 288 GTO would be a more practical choice for Utah than the F40 due to the road conditions up there. It had more ground clearance and no chin spoiler to catch on the frost heaves in the typical pavement in their roads. She just started laughing at him and said, "I can't believe that you can actually use the words Ferrari and Practical in the same sentence and keep a straight face!" I just kept my mouth shut and my opinions to myself!! ;^)
Nice to see some spirited driving for a change. Always good stuff coming from you guys!
Absolutely amazing video. Every parts of the movie is the best. I was in 288 GT for 2 minutes. Thank you so much.
This video always brings a tear to my eye that's how beautiful this car is. I watch it at least three or four times a year
Petrolicious. I always love your videos. But today, I'm glad I was working from home. Because I was actually 10 years old again watching this video: eyes-wide, chills, and cheering. Bravo
The 288 GTO is my dream car. I'm a Porsche guy, and I'd purchase this over a 959. I don't understand why the F40 gets so much more praise. The GTO has the same basic engine, is far sexier, and you could drive it cross country. It's a car I aspire to own, but just like the 930 on a smaller scale obviously, collectors have caught on and the 288 value is through the roof!
Amazing! A true Petrolicious add! Shared on FB. Hopefully it'll turn some heads. You guys deserve it!
definitely hit me by surprise i was expecting a voice over from him expressing his first sight of a ferrari.very quick clips i more or less already forgot. time to watch a second time
The 288 GTO and I are the same age. I love that car! Too bad only 250 were made, but only 250 to commemorate the '62 250 GTO. I know Mr. Ferrari had to have seen every one that went out from his "stables" (Scuderia). So who ever takes a 308 or 328 and converts it into a GTO replica, I can't blame them! Next to the 330 P4, both Ferrari's have the sexiest styling of all time in my opinion. But, for my life, it's a '06 Corvette. I still dream though ;)
I had a poster in my bedroom wall of the Ferrari 288 GTO, I bought that poster in 1989 when a had ten years old ❤
This video wasn't long enough. Love Petrolicious' high quality videos.
It was once said "Our young today have lost what it means to appreciate absolute greatness". In my opinion, driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, has given me a lot about real driving. And in some cases, real life. You see, in life, if you put time and effort in making things work, concentrate on the mechanics of things, you get great rewards. Like the old line says "If you work for it, you'll respect it more". It's a sad era in the automotive world we live in. Unfortunately as well, it's an even more sad era in the childhood hopes and dreams of today's young for iconic cars like this. They are a dying breed of uniqueness that one could only be influenced into loving. And it starts with the influencing from previous generations of dreamers. Unfortunately, they too are a dying breed. I'm proud to be one of those past generation dreamers.
Long live the Manual Transmission! #thirdpedalmafia #countachferrariporschepictureonmywallat16
If old car commercials were made today :D
Incredible speed and acceleration for a production car in 1984. 0 to 60 in about 5 seconds and 190mph top speed. Wow!! 🔥🔥🔥
you guys really took this video to another level! Keep them coming.
50% of the videos I watch are about cars but youtube just recently suggested me videos from this channel!? Damn you, youtube!
great video!! love the camera angles/editing/sound...and the car😍 on point you guys👍🔥🔥
Woke up to this... what a great day! I want the whole video, now!!!
It's always interesting when art is made from art. Great piece of editing with some great footage...... it's just freakin' all around awesome!
David probably has one of the best Ferrari collections out there. A truly lucky man.
Goosebumps!
Sexy Ferrari!! Love how they switched from the well worn, brown leather driving gloves in the intro to plain old black Mechanix gloves in the driving shots.😂
all you guys are trippin this is awesome! the cinematography and attention to detail is unreal. Music was a bit corny though hahahah would have liked to just hear the car
This 288 could even replace my girlfriend and I wouldn't even be mad
Right? And I've got a pretty badass girlfriend...
There are like 4 billion women out there... How many 288s? I doubt they come close
i loved this video ! it shows how much one person can have fun with the car they love! the music is amazing and i would like to add that as a car huy its about the car not how the car is shot in a video , this amazing work of art which is ferrari reminds us that at any age and no matter the car we all can have fun with your cars. keep making your videos guys you do amazing work !
Wow. Who cares it was an advert when it looks this good?
Beautiful car, but silly slam shifting and way it was edited to appear as a scene out of a Fast and Furious doesn't do it any service.
k
Came here to say that...
Well said
i agree with you, thrilling clips are nice but Petrolicious does it better without the unnecessary hyperactivity
Agreed...
I was also drinking my morning coffee while I watched this. Now I can't sleep anymore.
Not that long ago I used to work night shifts, but i loved and enjoyed my drive home after work; my car kept me always wide awake.
And its better than a LaFerrari!! Thank you Mr. Lee for driving it like its supposed to be!
when i clicked on this i was thinking of David Lee’s Ferrari collection because he has one and then 1:17 it’s David Lee driving lol
Absolutely amazing, beautiful and exhilarating at the same time. Petrolicious, you're at the top of the game when it comes to car videos!!!
It's Ferrari Collector David Lee! Glad to see him drive these beauties, even the underappreciated Ferraris, as they should be. Although I do not know what he has to say about the upcoming SUV Ferrari is making
What a raw, visceral, emotional and captivating video in under 3 minutes! I love it have shared on my channel!
She was on a poster in my childhood bedroom. Next to a white RUF 911, a Renault 5 turbo, an Alfa Giulia Sprint Veloce and the NR 750. Damn, I miss that room...
Good grief ... My all time fave, being given the beans in a tastefully shot movie. Love it!
That was fantastic!!..music could have been a tad lower..but it is great to see the F40's grandfather tear up that mountain road..Thank you!!...I need a cigarette now.
This car made my eyes watery. Very beautiful car
This is incredible! Truly the pinnacle of 80's Ferrari design!
And the Oscar for the shortest and the most bad ass Ferrari video goes to... Yep Petrolicious.
Wow, that's such a gorgeous little film for such a gorgeous, classic machine.
Yeah, this wasn't the typical Petro short doc but it was well done. Props for doing something a little different. I enjoyed it.
Somebody liked the Pennzoil commercials....
Nothing wrong with that, they're great commericals hahah Petrolicious just pulled off that same look and feel with probably a quarter of the budget that those Pennzoil commercials got
or maybe it was made by the same guy lalalalalarlalaaa
This is your work Mac? Hahah It's excellent! Seriously man
+ColinGW :)
Mr Lee. Thankyou. The best car I've seen and I think I'll ever see..
BIG THX to Mr. David Lee / Owner of this beauty.
Forget the haters. I thought this was beautifully done. Still in the Petrolicious style from beginning to end. Great video
What an amazing video @PETROLICIOUS!!!
The music, the footage, the scenario, how the excitement grows with the timeline of the clip, the physical interaction capture in @ferraricollector_davidlee driving style... for me this video is a piece of art by itself, able to comunicate so much passion and desire trough a screen in extremly rare way.
Astonishing job. Congrats to all involved.
most beautiful ferrari ever built in my opinion. It's proportions are perfect, and it has a slightly "muscle car" look to it.
Totally agree, that car design is simply perfect... perfect shape, perfect proportions... just PERFECT.
I actually saw one today! It has a mad sport exhaust! The sound dude!!
Awesome brother. My favorite car of all time. Timeless. 288 GTO. Cinematics are next level. Thanks
Arguable the finest creation to come from the Modena factory, in the last thirty years.
No Ferrari, even the F40 is as complete a package as the 288Gto.
It was more than a 308GTB on steroids, it was, and still remains one of the finest Ferraris available, and rarer than even the Enzo.
Nice screenwork!
Love the lights and the fastcuts
Good Job, petrolicious!
I scream at this video like I'm in the car! Great job
Wait...where's the rest, WE NEED MOAR!
I would love to be behind one of these on The Tail of the Dragon! I wouldn't be able to stay too close, nor would I, but would be able to hear the sound all through the area, stuff dreams are made of!
I loved the cassette tape insersion and then all hell breaks loose =======
Such an amazing car! It's great to see it riding like this Thx Petrolicious ;)
You guys should make a full movie on maybe like the history of a car brand like Ferrari. The quality of the video's is out of this world. Amazing work!
Ah, those mirrors. Simply iconic IMHO.
LOVE THE FORMAT!!! So intense. Goosebumps!
You guys do a really amazing job, inspiring cinematography guys!
0:40 my head was blown out!
Whats up with all the hate, I kinda liked this video. All the people hating saying this is shit should try to make something like this. Its really hard work and I appreciate it. Every Petrolicious video doesn't have to be the same, this was a good one!
Now this is what I call editing. Brillant job.
This was my favourite Ferrari since I was a kid. Great video
Converse Chuck Taylors and Mechanix gloves... I dig that. :)
I just watched Mr. Lee on Jay Leno's Garage with his Enzo and asked if he had a 288 GTO! Question answered, David, please let Jay drive it!
is it normal if tears and goosebumps appear, watching this?
