Yup. A triumph of design! I think it’s arguably the best looking car ever. Every angle works as you say. Especially rear three quarter from high. Not a big Ferrari fan but lusted after this car since I was 8 years old. I once tried to convince my old man to buy one when he was buying a flat. He broke even on the flat. He would have made more than a million if he’d listened to his 8 year old son... haha

It looks to me like it's got a sad/tired smile face...lol. Obviously in terms of performance it's superior, and I get why it's got the status over the 288 that it does.

Many years ago I saw a GTO cruising around in a neighboring town. Clean, glossy, bright red finish, with immaculate rims, appeared as if it had just been detailed. It was driving slowly. So low to the ground, it looked like it was gliding just above the surface of the street. I followed him for about a mile or two before turning away. IMHO the 288 GTO is hands down, the best looking Ferrari of all time. I believe it is matched only by the Miura SV for the most beautiful car ever!

I have to agree with you Ryan. That profile photo in Jay's Garage, with the overhead lighting is just spectacular! The F40 which was released just a couple of years later has gotten huge acknowledgement, and justifiably so, for its phenomenal stat-sheet and its performance has over-shadowed the 288 GTO to some degree. One of the biggest differences is though, that the GTO has all that performance and is still a comfortable road-going car. The F40 makes no apologies. It is a stripped down gunfighter! Nothing more. Nothing less. It has minimal accouterments but gobs of performance.
The 288 GTO (2.8 liters / 8 cylinders - that was the code then, engine displacement & number of cylinders) looked to me, like what the 308 GTB should have been. It was just "right" in all its proportions and had the performance to back it up. 400 hp will do that for you! I still have photographs of one that we had in a shop I worked in, in the early '90s. It was graceful, superbly muscular, and made everything else in the shop look just a bit "plain." That was among other Ferraris, Maseratis, Porsches, Jags and Mercedes. Even among the other Ferraris, it was in a class of its own.

6000 miles on a car of that vintage... A friend of mine had a 67 mustang. One of only 500 built to qualify for racing. It had super low mileage, but there was a story behind it. The original owner (vietnam fighter pilot) drove it, and raced it all the way to California for deployment. He said he was only beaten by a 427 side oiler vette. He sold it to get married, buy a house after coming stateside. Second owner LOVED the idea of the car but only drove it a couple of times. It honestly scared him. He stored it well for decades. I found out how good this thing was from a computer game, of all places. In the early 2000s, it showed up in Test Drive Unlimited, along with the F40, and many other Ferraris, but out of all them I put the most Kms on this one.
Jay mentioned how the F40 felt analog, but this felt even more so. And it looks.. sexy. It's got the rounded elements that remind me of 60s muscle-cars, with that whole Coke-bottle shape. The F40 looks like a purpose-built race-car, which is its own style, but you can tell it was made with the future in mind, with the slab sides, rectangular wing and just general hard-edged features.
And the profile still looks amazing to me, with that duck-tail rear spoiler.

Yes the F40 was the evolution, the 288 has a 2.8 litre Rocchi 8 cylinder engine double turbo engine. I remember that calculated in German Marks in 1985 it was 400k DEM and the Porsche 959 was 450 k DEM. Niki Lauda once said he received a buying option in 1985 and sold it after in 1986 for about 250 k DEM, when Enzo died in 1988 it would have been worth a million DEM, at that time about 400k dollars or more ! ! !

Not quite. The 288 is an development of the 308. The F40 is a development of the 288. All 3 cars are related, the roof of an F40 is the same as the roof on a 308, if you park them side by side you can see the connection. The 288 evolution is not a car in it's own right but an F40 prototype. Only 4 where built.

Colin Johnston Agreed, and it doesn’t really contradict anything I wrote.

In the late 1980’s I was an instructor at Jim Russel Racing School at Laguna Seca Raceway. I saw one of these at the Ferrari day which was held every year after the Historic race. I had never even heard of this car before that day. What a cool car and such a beautiful sound it made! Thanks David for sharing it with everyone!

I'm so glad David Lee keeps his cars original. Such a wonderful example of Ferrari's history.

He doesn't always. He did an amazing retro mod on a Dino 246 featured on Jays show as well.

I think the F40 is an awesome car, but the 288 GTO is better looking.

In 1989, I was six years old and I got a BBuraggo 288 GTO on Christmas Day (so almost 35 years ago, to the day - wow, where did time go?). I can tell you now, I fairly obsessed over that car. I loved the shape, the skirts around the side, the rear lights, the front wing, the gearbox sticking out the back; absolutely everything. As I write this, it is beneath the bed I am sitting on. It's worse for wear these days, but its still my idea of what a Pininfarina-styled Ferrari looks like.
