Ursula is the best character here and they did NOT do her justice in the live action. They should have hired an older, fatter woman. Melissa is too pretty. She looks like she could be Ursula's daughter.

Triton is a good dad. Though he had his issues with humans (can we blame him?), even Ursula knew he would give everything for his daughter. With his disturbing temper and simultaneous endless love for his child, he's a great character.

@Monster Hanna The temper, protectivness, and he regretted it the moment he did it. Just to make it clear, not a good parenting moment IN REALITY!!! But the story needed that extreme to push Ariel towards Ursula. To add, the live action Triton doesn't even have the look of remorse when she's crushed. Anyways, big dramatic conflict was a necessity for the plot, not the example of perfect parenting moment.

For all those saying Triton is a good dad, keep in mind his arch. To start, he definitely has a temper. Not saying he was abusive, to his daughters as a whole, but he had an entire musical totting praise upon him, and everytime someone has bad news to give him, or he gets upset everyone is immediately looking at him to see how angry he is getting. He probably caused the hurricane that sunk Eric’s boat just bc his daughter didn’t remember to go to the performance and thus
Embarrassed him. So the crab’s fear is leget. However, after the grotto scene, and Ariel disappearing, and the whole , thing with Ursela, I think he finally learned some chill and temper regulation. Still fear for the shotgun talk with any potential bf of his other daughters. He might not be overprotective anymore, but he’s still going to be protective I bet. Yay character growth!

Personally, I really like how Benson changes her voice for Vanessa, making her more of a mezzo-soprano rather than a soprano like Ariel.
Oh, and for those wondering, soprano is the high female voice, contralto is the low female voice (like Ursula), and mezzo-soprano is smack-dab in the middle. And their male counterparts are respectively tenor, bass and baritone, each roughly an octave lower than the female versions.

The Little Mermaid was the first movie in the Disney renaissance, it helped reinvigorate the company and re-established more interest in the fan base again with its popular songs. It was like the Frozen of the 90s. Ariels “Part of Your World” was really the blueprint to every future Disney film where the character expresses their goals and desires at the start of the movie. King Triton is built that way because he is part of Greek mythology in fact he is the son of Poseidon a Grekk God and of course Disney animation magic back then was very touchy so they make like a literally Dady xd hahaha lol...
It is also said that Ursula is Triton's Sister but Disney removed that script from the movie at the end because according to it was unnecessary... at the same time but it seems that in the new live action movie that is going to be released..They are going to bring that plot again... in fact the character design of urusla is based on a Drag Queen called Divine Disney had a lot of complication designing the character of Ursula because they didn't know how to animate her... in fact Divine was going to be the voice of Ursula but he had passed away before thw flim was released so They chose Pat Carroll for the role instead ... It's amazing how this classic revolutionized the industry at ist time.

This movie is wonderful at every beat. They tell you so much more about who the characters are in just a few scenes, fantastic animation, and a little dialogue.
It just takes a little bit of attention to whats going on and understanding of emotions and human motivations to understand it.

I can only imagine if I’d been that age when this new one with Halle Bailey came out. I would have been delirious. I’m pretty sure Ariel, Alyssa Milano and Hayley Mills (I saw a lot of her old movies growing up) were my first big crushes as a kid. If you want to hit up some hilarious Canadian content, Trailer Park Boys, the series, and the movie Don’t Legalize It, are well worth your time. In the movie, Ricky tries to save his weed business by trying to prevent the government from legalization. Not a joke. It’s amazing. Canadian cannabis activist Marc Emery’s wife, Jodie, makes an appearance.

7:48 she used to be a mermaid. She is Tritons younger sister who got cursed for killing all of her siblings but triton just to be queen/ heir to the throne. Ursula used dark magic a lot( the one thing I don’t get is how Ursula thinks she is new ruler for defeating Triton because the new queen would be oldest daughter who is at least 18- Ariel is youngest but 16)

This was one of my favourite movies as a kid; at 3 years old when this came out I was already swimming unaided and you bet I took this to heart.
... for context, every single person in my family can swim and that's becoming a rare thing these days. All of us were introduced to water well before we started education so just the act of being in water was a natural feeling.
I kind of want to see the new live-action version just to see how badly it's screwed up. It just looks so dark and maybe too realistic? And Ariel has always been my favourite princess

Also, fun fact, but the "but she who holds her tongue gets her man" and Ursula throwing a tongue into the cauldron may or may not be a reference to the original story where the sea witch took the little mermaid's tongue instead of her voice. Also, the Quentin Tarantino joke. 😂

Honestly, I don't think that polyp that wrapped itself around Ariel's wrist was being an asshole. I think it (he? she?) was trying to stop Ariel from going any further.
Even if Ariel and Eric kissed, I don't think she would get her voice back. That was never part of the deal. Ariel's voice was the payment for being turned human.

This reaction made me appreciate Ursula more. She’s hilarious. But her being a lady doesn’t mean her motivation stems from dating Triton! You tend to like the villains and the grouches lol. Your missus’s taste reminds me of my mother’s which very much influenced me-history. XD
It’s nice that “back in the day” people used to be cast more for niche roles-like theatre or voice acting. Now it’s “the more famous you are, the better.” An over generalization of course! I just dislike how late capitalism has whittled away at niches in all aspects of marketing and production. -_-

Ursula is so beyond extra that she's just awesome. An amazing villain. Evil to the core, but extremely talented at understanding people, what they want, what they're willing to give for it, and entrapping them with that. This movie was made at the darkest moment in Disney's history. The company was in horrific financial straits. They were literally discussing cutting the company up and selling various parts off. The animation studio had been moved into temporary trailers in the parking lot. This would be the last film they made. And they animated their absolute souls into it. This movie saved the company and launched Disney's "golden age" of films. Among their most loved and respected films to this day. And this was no easy film to animate. All those bubbles? Moving hair and plants underwater? Water. They put a ton into this and it paid off big. Decades later, the man who animated Ariel, Glen Keane, would direct the film that launched the next Disney golden age... Rapunzel. And you can see significant similarities in how both Ariel and Rapunzel move and act. Their flirtatious, feisty nature, movement, etc.
