I really loved the extra time and care that was given to their relationship in this movie. Them bonding in Eric's treasure room, the "little mermaid" figurine, Ariel getting to tell him her name herself and his reaction being changed from "Ariel? that's kinda pretty." to ""That's a beautiful name, written in the stars.", him holding her closer when she changed back into a mermaid instead of letting go and being shocked.
Also, I'd definitely recommend the live action Cinderella movie with Lily James!! 💖
I know you've steered away from watching TV shows, but I'd also really recommend Heartstopper if you ever wanna try n watch a shorter show sometime 💞 your reactions are just like pure joy captured into a video for me and I've been loving watching folks react to Heartstopper lol 💖💖

I think it was a really good choice for them to confirm that Ursula was Triton's sister and about Ariel's mother being killed by humans.
They confirmed that in a prequel movie with the og Ariel, but I think it's better that they established that in this cause it explains Triton's deep distain for humans.

Fun Fact: Flounder is voiced by Jacob Tremblay, the boy who voiced Luca from 2021 Luca. Also Scuttle is a Northern Gannet as seagulls can't actually dive underwater and so they changed the species to include underwater moments. Also the woman who gives Ariel the fork in the marketplace is Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel.

Amazing reaction!!! This has to be one of my favorite live action remake films!!! I really loved how they added more depth to both Ariel and Eric and made them incredibly parallel. I was so happy they kept the concept of Ursula and Triton being siblings; it was deleted from the original but adapted for the stage version which also gave us the backstory of the origin Ursula’s evil nature. Another favorite moment of mine was Vanessa’s trick; Halle’s voice, Melissa’s cackle, and Jessica’s acting was what that moment top tier. I definitely loved how they had Ariel and Ursula make a blood pact, as opposed to the contract for not only solves the plot hole of her being able to write her own name, but it also cements the seriousness of the deal. I really hope that Hallie and Melissa receive Oscars for their outstanding and talented performances!!!

I appreciate you mentioning the controversy surrounding this movie. TLM is a movie I grew up with, and was one of my favorite's. When they announced the casting, I will admit I was somewhat surprised, but I was curious how Halle would make the charachter her own. Friends and people around me were outraged by Disney's casting decision, and that disgusted me. Not even willing to give her a chance. And then it just snowballed into so much more. The amount of BS I was hearing was staggering! At one point, some people I knew were saying 'Disney needs to be so politicaly correct that they cut out "kiss the girl", because of the "girl" in it'.. And I was like 'what the hell are you talking about??? They didn't cut that song'.. Even now, after release, and I've seen it, I'll tell them again and they don't believe it.. It's sad

Of course it looks different from the animated version. This is a live action movie aimed at adults, not kids. So the crab is gonna look like a crab. The fish is gonna look like a fish. But they still talk. And Ariel's hair is still red, it's just more natural instead of the vibrant tone from the animation.
Furthermore, Scuttle is portrayed as a female northern gannet diving bird (not a male seagull) because they are able to breathe underwater for a short period of time.
Ursula's look and behaviour in the animated film was inspired by an American drag queen called Divine. To prepare for her role as Ursula, Melissa McCarthy actually consulted with the drag queen community.
One fun little detail is when Ursula is creating the potion to become Vanessa and the main ingredient is a bottle shaped like a human stomach. This is a play on the phrase "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach".
Many people miss the fact that Ursula and Triton are siblings in this version. Triton had banished Ursula from his kingdom and disowned her for practicing black magic, which is what motivates her actions. It was cut from the animation but was included in the 2007 Broadway musical.
Ariel and her sisters have the same mum but they represent the seven seas which is why each of them are a different race.
Regarding the opening quote: Throughout the film Ariel cannot produce tears, even when she's sad and/or crying, UNTIL she becomes a human.
Scuttle's "Has Ariel killed the prince yet?" is most likely referencing the original fairy tale, in which the nameless mermaid is destined to turn into sea foam and die after the prince marries another woman. The mermaid's sisters tell her that the only way she can escape this fate is if she kills the prince with an enchanted dagger. However, the mermaid can't go through with it and instead accepts her death.
Ariel 'signed' the contract by giving Ursula a scale from her mermaid tail, which actually covers up a plot hole from the animation where she literally signs it with a quill pen. Since she could clearly read and write English, why didn't she just explain herself by writing it down? There's a big chance Eric wouldn't have believed her but it's worth a try right?I
Ariel is given 3 days to kiss Eric and make him fall in love with her so she can remain human permanently. Ursula cheats 3 times to keep Ariel from being able to do just that. First, she secretly puts a memory spell on Ariel so she won't remember she needs Eric's kiss to stay human, and every time she is reminded she forgets immediately or falls asleep (that wasn't in the animation). Second, she sends her pet eels to prevent Ariel and Eric from kissing at the end of Kiss the Girl. Finally, she transforms herself into a human with Ariel's voice to trick Eric into marrying her.
They changed the dingelhopper scene to include Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel in the animation. She is the lady who gives Ariel the dinglehopper in the market. It's a symbolism of her passing the torch to Halle.
Regarding the colours in the sea, someone said it's supposed to look all dark and gloomy from Ariel's perspective because that's how she sees it, which honestly makes sense.
I loved the way Eric points out the star constellations to Ariel (which as a sailor he knows well) and starts guessing her name. It was such a beautiful improvement from the animated version where Sebastian just whispered her name to Eric. It added so much depth and charm to the scene.
I like that Eric's character arch is more than just being the prince Ariel falls in love with. He has a backstory and a family. He, like Ariel, has a parent who believes they know what is best for their child. Eric being adopted is supposed to highlight the fact that he feels like he doesn't belong. Much like Ariel, he feels there is so much more to explore and discover, only the other way around. They share a bond over their love for collecting treasures. I really like how they fleshed out their romance more and actually showed they had a connection, instead of just 'love at first sight' and physical attraction. It also helped a lot that Halle and Jonah had an insane amount of chemistry.
They also made it a lot clearer in this version that Ariel didn't want to become a human just for Eric. She was already interested and curious of life on land BEFORE she met him. Her motivations were rooted in her not fitting in and wanting to explore. She would have gone up one way or another, she just happened to have met Eric along the way. I think that’s why they added the bit about her not remembering to kiss Eric. They didn’t want the whole premise of her giving up her voice to be about chasing a guy, rather, about her chasing her dreams. Triton destroying her belongings was always the catalyst for her going to Ursula, not Eric in itself. They still kept the romance, it didn't take anything away from it.
Some people have a problem with Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric as if it takes anything away from his character. He literally saved Ariel's life when Ursula was about to kill her by throwing the harpoon. He also saved Max. Ariel may have given him a little nudge but he was almost there anyways. And even so, it still speaks to Eric's character. Just like he didn't save Ariel in exhange for her saving him. He saved her because he loved her, and more importantly because he's a decent person. Ursula trying to kill Eric made so much more sense because she didn't care about Eric, it was about hurting Ariel.
I wasn't sure about Javier Bardem's portrayal of King Triton at first, but the more I think about it the more I like it. In the animation he clearly had some anger issues, and while that is understandable, he doesn't have to be all screaming and intimidating to have an impact. He looks and sounds more disappointed and scared here rather than angry, which is not only a lot more respectable but also a lot more believable. He feels more like a worried father than just some big scary dude with an anger management problem.
As for the acting as a whole, Halle and Melissa clearly stood out, but Jonah, Daveed, Jacob, Awkwafina and even Javier did a great job as well. Also, Jessica Alexander as Vanessa absolutely stole the 5 minutes she was on screen.
As for the music, I think Halle absolutely nailed Part Of Your World. She has such an innocent and naive quality to her voice yet powerful at the same time. The power in that high note in the reprise is incredible. I love Melissa's version of Poor Unfortunate Souls. There is so much sass and character in her voice. The fact that Melissa had little to no singing experience and didn't even know she could sing is INSANE. Under The Sea translates surprisingly well to live action. Daveed Diggs adds his own flavour to it and Halle's little adlibs add so much to the song. Kiss The Girl is just magical, musically and visually. I love Wild Uncharted Waters and how it has her siren song behind it. Jonah has an amazing voice and you can hear he has a theatre backround. Also, this is random but I love how you can hear his strong English accent in every single word. For The First Time is great and allows Halle to be more playful yet vulnerable. I was appalled when I first heard Scuttlebutt, but it has grown on me and now I actually kinda like it.
And while some people didn't like the ending scene with Triton, Ariel's sisters and all the other merpeople, I loved it. Yeah we didn't really see Ariel interacting with any of them besides her family, but neither did we in the animation and I still felt emotional seeing them at the end. It was kind of showing how their two worlds were forever united with their marriage.
There are only really two things I have a problem with in the whole movie: The lack of Flounder and lack of Ariel's wardrobe. I didn't have any problem with the way Flounder looked, I just felt like he was absolutely useless in the movie. He barely had any lines and wasn't even on screen that much. I needed more of him. And, obviously, they could've dressed Halle in a potato bag and she still would've looked gorgeous. But Ariel's wardrobe on land felt lackluster. She wore the same blue dress the entire time! Even the dress at the end during the wedding was the same one, only in pink. What about the blue dress with the bow? Or the sparkling purple dress? The wedding dress? Why not bring them to life and just modernise them a bit? I don't feel that their reunion at the end was underwhelming like some people do. If anything, I like how simple it was and that they didn't speak. They communicated enough with their faces.
At the end of the day, this is a movie about a mermaid turning into a human and fish that can talk. Not everything has to make sense. The thing is, there are some people who will never be satisfied because it will never be as good as the animated version. You can still enjoy and appreciate this movie for what it is.

There's so much that I love about this movie that I could talk about! One thing that I loved was that Grimsby is more of a supporting character and not just a goofy side character (which works in the animated film, but somehow I think Grimsby would not have been as endearing as he is in this film if he was just the same clumsy character). I was skeptical of how "Under the Sea" would play out with sea creatures all being CGI, and I was genuinely blown away! The visuals were stunning and Halle Bailey's parts were amazing, and Daveed Diggs nailed that song! I like it that Max was not excluded from this film and looks just like his animated counterpart. I was disappointed that Ariel's sisters didn't get as much screentime or lines as they deserved, but they might appear in some later "Little Mermaid" sequel with Halle Bailey and the cast from this movie (like how there's "Maleficent" and then "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil"). I love "Wild Uncharted Waters," I had chills all over when I watched that scene in theaters and Jonah Hauer-King is such a dreamy Prince Eric. I like it that her sisters have a genuine reason to despise humans: because their shipwrecks pollute the ocean, not just because they're humans. When I saw this in theaters, I thought, "Okay, yeah, that is a legit reason to hate humans." "Scuttlebutt" is a term used by sailors to refer to the hot gossip or exciting news; as in, "What's the scuttlebutt?" So it's a play on words because the bird's name is Scuttle, and I actually liked "The Scuttlebutt." It's not the most phenomenal song in the film, but it's not the worst song, in my opinion. One thing that's different in this movie compared to the animated film is that Ariel calls her dad, "Father" whereas in the animated one, she calls King Triton, "Daddy." Melissa McCarthy did a great job as Ursula in this movie. She had a great combination of being comical and intimidating. There were parts in "Poor Unfortunate Souls" where I was actually kinda scared of her. One thing that I never understood about King Triton is that yeah, he felt like there was no other way for him to get through to her unless he destroyed her treasures, but if he wanted her to respect him, why does he think that destroying all her things will make her respect him? That would just make her hate him and avoid him even more.

I'm glad you enjoyed this remake, Nick!! I had a feeling you would! I personally enjoy this one as well and love the way Ariel, Eric, and relationship was portrayed. There were definitely some things that didn't work for me, namely the "Scuttlebutt" song. I'd heard it wasn't all that great and finally hearing it now, it's definitely the worst song out of the whole movie. I also wish some of the underwater effects were given more time and love and, small nitpick, they let Ariel keep her bright red hair. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the natural redhead look and I think Bailey pulls it off amazingly, but when she's a fantasy creature who has siblings with unnaturally colored hair, it really feels like a small missed opportunity. Overall, I give it probably a 7.5/10.
As far as where I stand on the whole race-swapping topic, I almost never have a problem with it. The only times I think I would be bothered by it is if the race was switched from a POC to a white person or, like you said, if the character's eace plays an integral part in their story. Aside from that, I judge an actor based on how they portray the character, not if their race matches the original or source material.
I'm excited to see your reaction to Elemental!! I already know you're going to love that one and relate so much to Wade!! BTW, when do you think you'll watch the rest of the LEGO movies?

Yeah, I seriously can never understand who thought casting Awkwafina was a smart idea. No offense, but she's not even funny anymore. Before, she was simply playing that annoying comic relief, and at least while her characters were annoying they were funny to listen to. But now she's just straight up unbearable to listen to. Listening to her sing, gave me the vibes from Ren & Stimpy where a yak character literally screams, “SHUT UP!!!! I CAN’T STAND IT ANYMORE!!!!"
As for Halle Bailey, you may disagree with me on this:
Halle is a TERRIFIC SINGER, but she's a mediocre actress. And as for the whole haters due to them changing Ariel's race, my gripes is more due to how irritating seeing Disney radically alter several original characters' appearances. Not to mention the only arguments people make are simply "it's a fantasy movie, don't question it too much" or “race-swapping the characters is trying to embrace diversity/representation". But ask yourself for a moment this:
Do you really believe that -Disney- HOLLYWOOD cares about diversity, minorities, or representing “the world we live in today”? THEY DON'T. All Hollywood cares about is business. And randomly race/ gender/ ethnicity/ sexuality ("or any other fancy way....") swapping established characters is a great way to drive up business., cares about diversity, minorities, or representing “the world we live in today”? Because FOR BETTER or FOR WORSE, it gets a lot of people to talk about their products.
Just take a look at every social media page for Amazon's Rings of Power, HBO's Velma, Neflix's Resident's Evil, and just any Disney remake or Marvel show. Usually when seeing "first look images" of what new movie or show is gonna look like, you start with the characters. Most images of where you see characters with different appearances than what the original looks like, are shown to earn a lot of reacts or comments. And you can argue whether or not that it's all positive reacts and possibly a quick glance at the comments could confirm one or the other (despite them removing the dislike button nowadays....), but IT DOESN’T MATTER. Because the more people that interact with someone's post, the more that it will get shared along social media. And the marketing in Hollywood is VERY AWARE of this.
Geez, at this point, Hollywood's become it's own comedy. Like an episode of Futurama or South Park, where a character will say, "Yeah of course we support all kinds of diverse communities. Now go consume some products.", then laugh behind the audience's backs as if everyone's too stupid to see through their BS.

    26:30 its so dumb.
They literally tried to explain why shes not immediately all about getting a kiss from Eric the moment she sees him, something the original didn't have.
One little problem: IT DIDN'T/DOESN'T NEED IT!
As has been repeated over and over, Ariels wish to be human wasn’t just about falling for Eric. She had a genuine love for humanity. So of course shes gonna be a little distracted by suddenly being in a human town, doing human things!

Her being black actually made sense here, the kingdom is set in a carribean-like region! Turns out Eric being white is the odd one out, and it made him feel out of place just like Ariel in the sea(he's also a collector), a nice change. Not to mention the way they show their day out, it's better than the cartoon. I could do without Eric & Scuttle's songs(same with Beast & Jasmine's songs too, unneccessary), Ariel being the one to stab Ursula, Ursula being her aunt & the amnesia spell.
The movie & its companion book also has some dissonance, like Ursula straight up kills(probably harvest) those who failed the agreement while in the book she turns them into Polyps like the cartoon.
Now about mer-anatomy, since they have scales that mean they probably reproduce like fishes instead of sea mammals. They also don't eat fishes as stated in the books, probably because it's too close to cannibalism for their comfort. Instead their diet consist of sea vegetation & non-fishes like clams & shrimps.

Empire of the Sun if your interested in a drama (Stephen Spielberg movie will definitely make you cry and has a great cast and soundtrack, stars a young Christian Bale), and lastly Super 8 if your interested in a scifi thriller kind of movie (underrated and made by jj abrams and Stephen Spielberg again).

I grew up watching the little mermaid over and over, and I LOVED this remake! It add so much more depth to the relationship between Eric and Ariel
And fixed a few issues with the cartoon (her giving her scale/blood instead of writing her name on a contract.. which then.. how come she doesn’t just write Eric a message explaining)
It also had a few moments where it felt like the original book by Hans Christen Andersen, the somber tone of Ariel’s struggles at least
The people that claimed it ruins their childhood love of the little mermaid clearly are more hung up on skin color then the actual subject matter..

And some of these reactors doesn't instantly go crazy seeing Jodi Benson and busted into tears like I and other 80s baby did who saw this movie. It just made me feel so very old.
Don't yall know she was the original voice actress for Ariel?

My thoughts on this movie are mixed honestly. I'm not a fan of big changes on remakes because in most cases the original was brilliant and shouldn't be changed. Though some changes work like the story of maleficent being given more depth. That is a good change. In this I was worried, because they had changed the look of Ariel and I was afraid it was for no reason and the first looks which garnered the most controversy had no context to show why the decisions were made. When I saw the movie my feelings changed because her casting made sense with the movie we were given. The changing of location from 'Denmark' to a carribean style island made sense. In the original movie the under the sea world is so vibrant and fascinatingly animated that the above world can't compare. The change to make the above world more vibrant than undersea makes us see the appeal and we understand more the fascination ariel has for it. So that for me was done well. But I do think the undersea parts were a little too dark. Hallie was amazing in the role in my opinion. Her vocals were shockingly good and her ability to convey her emotions when silent were brilliant. I loved the attention they gave to her and Eric and made their relationship grow based on mutual interest. However her scenes with her father were badly acted on his part. Sebastian's voice was over the top in a bad way, but worse his vocal acting was very flat. Scuttle and flounder were better but the scuttlebutt song was atrocious. And Melissa Mccarthy wasn't the best either. Overall I enjoyed it and will watch it again whereas I will never put lion King on again lol

The little mermaid has a special place in my heart. Arial was one of my favorite princesses growing up and I dreamed of being a mermaid. I don’t really like the live action remakes Disney has been doing (only one I liked to this point was Aladdin) but I still wanted to see this. I wasn’t disappointed. It had its goods and bads for sure - but I overall liked it a lot because like you said they added so much to it which made it a more complete story.
I am sad there was so much hate - mainly because of the casting choice. Hate to say I have a few friends that refuses to watch it because of the cast. Am kinda glad you touched on that at the beginning though. Agreed with what you said.
    -
One of my favorite movies with the “non-traditional” cast is actually the Roger & Hammerstein’s Cinderella with Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother. That is still my favorite version of Cinderella to this day.

This remake kinda exceeded my expectations a bit and I consider it to be one of the best Disney live action remakes. • @LexitaMai
    @LexitaMai 10 месяцев назад +2

I don't take issue with her being a black mermaid. I take issue with
    1. Them making her hair such a doll color, when she would have looked amazing with more vibrant red hair, and when Ariel is literally known as the classic redheaded princess
    2. The fact that the movie uses such dull colors. This is only worsened by the fact that they have a black lead actress. She completely blends into her background in some scenes. If you want to cast a black person to pretend that you care about inclusion, then the LEAST you can do is hire people who have experienced lighting darker skin.
    3. I wouldn't mind Disney casting black actors for remakes if they were also casting them for new movies and rolls. Disney doesn't come across is actually caring about inclusion. They always want to go to the lazy way, and never give people of color an original character, princess, or lead. Like why can't we have our OWN character? Why do we always have to play second fiddle in some reimagined remake? And even when POC DO get an original character, they have them turning into animals or non-human figures way too often (Lion King is a close example of this, but just barely makes the cut because race isn't defined. But the African implications are clear. Then you also have Soul, The Emperor's New Groove, Turning Red, The Princess and the Frog...)
    4. When they do this to Black actors-cast them and rules that are going to throw them directly into controversy-they are starting these actors out on a bad foot. Halle was given a huge opportunity by being hired by Disney. But Disney also set her up for failure, in a way, by making it so her race, hair color, and lack a representation when it came to the original princess was the primary conversation about the movie. She did an amazing job- but Disney knew from the very beginning that that would not be everyone's focus, and they didn't care at all. They threw her into the storm fire. People we're angry because the Percy Jackson series. The female leads hair color and eye color wrong. They knew perfectly well what they were throwing this actress into when they cast her

Hey Nick, I love movie and drama reactions. Can you please watch the tenth, eleventh and twelfth movies of Pokemon next time and get your reaction? They are the only serial films in Pokemon movie history. İ think you gonna love it.
