    Thank you, Richard.
    I made few mistakes. I did reboot instead of shut down/hot boot the Pi. Now my Pi is up with my old ext-hard drive. FYI: If ext-hard drive takes time to power up, let it up (light on) from on pc to the Pi. Just connect the USB cable from pc to the Pi without power off/on. Let the HD power on in between the shut down and power up the Pi.
    Great thank you.
    Love our video.

    Useful instruction. There is no need to tamper any files by hand.
    I did not use SD Card at all.
    Downloaded Ubuntu MATE 32 bit 18.X ISO image zipped.
    Transferred the MATE image on to a 2.5" Solid State Drive (120GB) using RUFUS (rufus-3.6) software which makes it bootable.
    Connected the 2.5" SSD Drive to Raspberry PI B+ using a USB 2.0 cable adapter.
    It booted automatically with out any issues. Just click Next => Next.

      I'm pressing 'X' to doubt here.
      Ubuntu mate in an iso will be for x86/x86_64.
      Next, a 32 bit image would be for models lower than pi3, however, the OTP of those devices are not factory programmed to boot in USB host mode... Not ever.
      The iso downloads from the official source aren't compressed, but if they were, they wouldn't be zipped.
      The only factual statement in your entire comment is that Rufus can be used to create a bootable disk for use with a raspberry pi.

    Excellent Video, got my hard drive to boot my Raspberry pi 3b - I had a sd card I had been using to surf the internet and look at RUclips. I added the commands to the config.txt and setup a swap disk and put on gparted, then I cloned my SD card with sd card copier supplied with the Raspberry pi O.S. to my hard drive and it worked perfect. I didn't have to rebuild the operating system and reset it up. Works great. Now I'm going to look for a SSD and a 3A power supply. I had to plug my hard drive into a usb hub running 2.5 amps. So it's a little funky the way it boots.

    To preserve life of SD Card and improve performance on slow IOPS SD cards is good to change vm.swappiness to lower value ( 1-10 ) ( in /etc/sysctl.conf ). Default value is 60. 0 disable Swap in Kernel>=3.5

    WELL! .. I got mine going! .. WHEW! .. Good Job Richard!
    Had to do this about four times until it picked up .. I'm also using a 256gb SSD on a Suptronics x820 board .. A bit different but it stacks my RPI on it and plugs directly in. The SSD is working like a champ and really like the idea of the huge storage I have verse a 32gb. After making the adjustment to the "SWAP FILE" yea baby! .. it's really kicking.. I too had 1.9g for the system operation.
    Now I am looking into possibly using Win10 on the drive but have read a lot on the subject that it really operates s....l....o....w .. and not sure if I really want to install it or not ..

    No need to set program_usb_boot_mode=1 on a pi 3b+, it's set by factory as default.
    For a pi 3b and lower you need to set it, but only ones.
    After running the pi you need to remove it again from config.txt. No need to set it at all on the HDD image.

      Using the 3b+, does tha mean you still have to image both micro sd and the usb drive or can you just image the usb drive and boot straight from it?

    • @kaisersose5549
      @kaisersose5549 4 года назад

      He's saying that the OTP is factory pre-programmed to boot in USB host mode.
      If you aren't sure what that means, you should go check out the official documentation for your specific model of pi.

      @@DanielGonzalez-po7pn
      You are correct, sir.
      However, any bottleneck between the SSD and the processors will slow the transfer of data.
      The sdcard on a raspberry pi is on a completely different, and much faster bus than the USB and Ethernet ports.
      This is why everyone will tell you that the sdcard is much faster than an external SSD on a raspberry pi.
      Think of it as though the sdcard is connected to a USB 3.0 port, but the USB and Ethernet ports are only USB 2.0.

    Thanks for your video. I am awaiting a Raspberry Pi 3b and intend to follow your instructions for using an SSD as opposed to a Micro SD card. I am not all that familiar with Linux and am wondering if these lines in the latest Raspbian config file will interfere with the 3b:
    [pi4]
    # Enable DRM VC4 V3D driver on top of the dispmanx display stack
    dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
    max_framebuffers=2
    I kinda assume that the [pi4] may tell the PI 3 to ignore it, but ...?

    Not a good idea to wave around a hard disk device whilst the disk is spinning, it is a gyroscope and will put a lot of strain on the bearings when trying to rotate it off axis and put stresses on the platter.

    Do you know where I can buy a small supply of spacers used between case top and bottom? (different lengths/ etc) also screws/nuts/washers used with SBCs in general maybe 3 most common sizes? I have Raspberry Pi devices, RockPro64, Odroid HC1s, and I will be buying more in the future. It is nice to have parts available in small quantity on the side. Also, are you familiar with SBC s in general to suggest 3 different size screws/nuts/washers, i would most commonly use regardless of SBC brand etc.? Humble Regards, Alton

      I am familiar with single board computers (SBC's) and I have just recently begun dipping my toe in. I am proficient with Linux and primarily use laptops to play with as they are cheap and readily available. That RockPro64 looks cool. I wonder how long before Raspberry will come out with a "real" 1GB LAN port and USB3? I have bags of nuts and screws from electronics hundreds of electronic projects. I would suggest your hardware store first and eBay for any esoteric materials you need.

      The USB boot function should not be an issue with the PoE hat installed.
      That's a problem with DC current it drops quickly with the length of wire. Any chance you can plug in an externally powered sata port into your drive or a powered USB hub? Depends on the bus.
      I think the sdcard is separate from the embedded USB hub, so anything running from the USB ports will be slower than the sdcard.
      I may be wrong, but I seem to recall having seen a diagram showing that the sdcard isn't controlled by the USB bus.

      Yes, once you set the flag to look for a boot device on the USB ports the Raspberry Pi will remember the setting permanently from that time on so you set and forget it for all the other loads. You could have a very large retropi USB drive if you wish and boot from it. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    I sincerely appreciate your listing source locations to buy what you are using! However, I am "DISABLED" AND ON LIMITED INCOME. iS THERE another recommendation for good quality but cheaper cameras, mics, etc for creating videos? I also am starting to create SMART HOME devices.
    The sensor board averages $5.00 and depending on firmware you load, determines the type sensing it will do for you. I will install for windows, doors first. Then economic build cameras for inside home. THen invest in 3-4 maximum quality outside cameras that need to zoom and provide super quality video. I will also have smart light switches, wall electric plugs. LED night light hidden in walls to come on at night with motion. Also there is two Linux based apps that manage a smart home very well.
    That way I do not buy items and pay for subscription for them to monitor.
    Also program it to have loud neighborhood alarm and notify police when i am away on vacation as needed.
    Sounds like a lot and it is but very cheap and super reliable.
    Alton

      My go to source for things like this eBay. Usually they come from China and take a while to arrive but they do arrive, generally they work and they are very affordable. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    Stop moving that mechanical drive while it's running. Good way to kill a 2.5 inch mechanical drive.

      Thanks.
      This is something I hadn't previously thought much about, but it makes perfect sense.
      I was planning to use a spare 2.5" drive in a crossover device (somewhere between a 4G enabled tablet and a netbook), but may be better off getting a large capacity flash drive as a budget alternative.
