John huffing a rum cake is quite preppy. This cake freezes beautifully - the second round of glaze will bring the thawed cake back to the land of the living, and no one will be the wiser. My grandmother's recipe called for finely chopped walnuts sprinkled in the bottom of the pan before adding the cake batter, and it was always a winner. Thanks, John, for all that you do for your community. Cheers!
thank you for your tip! I had wanted to bake ahead for Christmas gift giving and wondered if I could freeze~ I wasnt certain when to put the run sauce on.. I will pour it on later, Happy Baking!
“Thank you🙏🏻, for the ‘tips’✨concerning…🤷🏼♀️’how to freeze/revive’ the ‘Rum🥃’ cake properly😊; AND for providing your Grandmother’s ‘little addition’, to HER ‘Rum Cake🥮’ recipe💕!!😃” Catherine, Florida ✌🏻❤️👊🏻 “Peace, Love and Respect”!!
I use the homemade goop to coat my Bundt and cake pans, it’s equal parts of flour, oil and crisco, mix it all together and keep it in a jar in my pantry. When baking a cake I just brush it in the pan with a pastry brush
It's so good to see a rum cake not using a packet mix! Which is very typical in the US. I will definitely try this recipe in the near future and give my thoughts.
Gracias John por tan exquisita torta! La voy a hacer ya que en Venezuela tenemos uno de los mejores rones del mundo. Un gran abrazo para ti y tu hermosa familia ❤️🇻🇪❤️
I went to the Cayman Islands and have been obsessed w rum cakes ever since. I developed a recipe and have been using it to make variations. Everybody’s favorite so far is pineapple, can’t wait to try it with this recipe!
Oh, my, days that looks good!….. we have just got back from the store a few hours ago with a bottle of Pineapple and Coconut Spiced Rum, I have a feeling some is headed this cakes way! Thanks John…..come on 5 million! x❤x
My Grandmom's friend used to make a whisky cake that was a lot like your rum cake. I definitely want to try your recipe, both with dark rum and with whisky.
John, your cooking tips are second to none! I've been on board for a year, and I can definitely say I'm a better cook for watching. Thanks for your instruction/teaching!❤
Great timing! I’ve been making the same rum cake since 1972 and in recent years have fled the prepackaged/processed ingredients approach in most things (cake mix & pudding mix in this case). My brother made a special request so I gave in and made him the old version 😖. Boy oh boy I could taste and smell those ‘chemicals’. Thank you for sharing!! Gotta have that glaze!! Yum 🥰. PS - I always cover with cling wrap and let it “sit” for three days before serving).
I now use a technique found in one of my recipes: give the cake 10 minutes in the pan, inverted it, pour the syrup into the pan and return the cake to the pan! Really soaks in!
Excellent interpretation of a Caribbean classic! I grew up eating fully soaked rum cake ( as do all Caribbean kids, lol). Typically a couple of bottles are used since it's usually made for holidays and a lot of the alcohol bakes out in the hot oven. But I will definitely pass on your rum glaze idea!!
I bake rum cake every year for Christmas. Normally, I brown the butter while steeping a cinnamon stick in it. A little hit of spice and the nuttiness just add an extra oomph of flavor. Typically, I use all purpose, but I'm certainly taking notes to use cake flour now.
This cake looks wonderful! When I butter and flour a Bundt, I put the prepped Bundt in the fridge so the butter doesn’t pool. This also allows me to prepare the pan before mixing it batter.
John, cake looks delicious. You are a great teacher and a wonderful person. I must let you know: your peach recipe is a hit in my home. I have made over fifteen cakes this year for friends and family. Thank you for sharing with us your delicious recipes.
How did you know I was planning my Xmas dinner menu & thinking about what to serve for dessert. And boom a "Preppy Kitchen"episode pops up. I made a butter rum cake like 2 Xmas ago but I never say no to a "Preppy Kitchen" recipe. It's on the menu 💕
Hi John, thanks for all your recipes. Love them. Just want to knw, for this cake can one use a normal tray without a bunt tray?? If so , will the baking time will be different? Thanks
Soak cake with a fifth of rum! Nothing else needed. Needle injection or prick with a fork. Cover tightly, better the next day. Keeps forever, or until eaten, which ever comes first. 😊Freezes beautifully.
Rum cake is one of my favorites! This southern boy thinks that pecans on top are essential. I always add an extra quarter cup of rum after the sauce is cooked because I like that taste of raw rum. You really do want a big dollop of whip cream with it though to cut that slight burn. WARNING: I think it's Bacardi that makes an Extra Dark rum. In this case darker is not better! Just not at all the right flavor note, IMO.
I‘ve watched numerous videos on bundt cakes, but never this seen this much flour and sugar (!) in any of the recipes for the size of baking form you are using. I guess us Germans don’t like our cakes this sweet!😅 Although it did really look very tasty in the end.
How long does rum last? I don’t drink, and I have no idea how to store this stuff. Do I have to bake a whole bunch, or can I throw it in the fridge for a while?

John, not only are your recipes great, but you are very precise in your directions and quite entertaining. NEVER CHANGE. 😊
Getting a digital scale for measuring flour is one of the best kitchen decisions I've ever made.
Same! I never really understood the difference until I did. Breads, cakes, and cookies turn out so much better!!
He explains every detail, but not in overwhelming way. 😂😂😂thanks👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
I love a caramelized crust, so I butter the pan thoroughly and then shake super fine sugar throughout and it gives it a wonderful crust.
“What a WONDERFUL ‘TIP’😉!!❤️🔥”
“Thank you🙏🏻’, VERY much😊!!”✨💕

I do this too!! I love to do it with sweet bread too!! Sugar and cinnamon is my fave!!❤
My mother made rum cakes, she ALWAYS used more rum than the recipe called for. Quite delicious 😋

How did you know that I just bought some rum? Now I know where to use it - thanks for this unique cake.❣️
Same!
My candid advice for everyone is to get a digital scale or measuring cups.
BTW, I love your videos.

Dang that looks smokin' hot 💯😋 Thank you for the recipe. Happy weekend to you and to everyone here 😊😉
I use a fairly stiff bristled pastry brush and soft butter or margarine to grease a Bundt pan. It gets in all the ridges. Then dust with flour.
Love your channel and your recipes great. Thx
I love you and you've made me look into baking! You are sooo funny.
Looks super delicious!
I made a Rum Cakevyears ago from Bicardi Rum that used Yellow Cake Mix. It was absolutely delicious, but this has to be so much better. Will try.

Kitchen scales are important, especially if you are baking with gluten-free ingredients.
Yummy!
I make a Jamaican rum cake with nuts. I always have to have a glass of Coke with it. Rum and coke drink 🎉
It looks delicious! I will probably try it tomorrow but I'm wondering if I can add some raisins, and if I would need to adapt the recipe?
Rum-soaked raisin cake = R/Yum!
Hi John, can we add raisins? If so, at what point in the process? Thank you!

The pirates stole my spiced rum cake in my tropical dream
Can I use this for a fruit cake base? I like fruit cake that is partly fruit and nuts, but more cake. Any ideas?
I'm hungry.
What about half white sugar and 1/2 dark brown sugar?
It looks like the rum pooled to the bottom and made a tunnel in the cake. I'm sure it's delicious.
I noticed this as well...
Wow
