- The other day we mentioned the importance of paying import duties on products being imported into Nicaragua (or anywhere.) But some people were offended at the thought of having to shoulder their fair share of taxes and to be treated the same as local businesses. Some even thought that their mere presence should be cause for delight, even if they didn't pay their bills. So today I want to talk about how imports and taxes work when you are an expat... also knows as an immigrant, and why, while it might emotionally feel like you shouldn't need to pay taxes, it would be wildly unfair if you didn't.

Excellent video topic. Once we finish the importation of our truck, which financially makes no sense, we will meet up here in Leon. My personal importation went well. Permanent residency , for six months at a time, completed in less than 3 weeks. Back on topic, contacting your local Nicaraguan consulate or embassy prior to immigration, is invaluable for getting the maximum amount of personal household goods imported duty free. Especially if you are a Nicaraguan repatriating or retiring here.

The argument that "they should be happy that I'm coming to spend money in their country" reminds me of people who go to casino hotels and complain about paying 10 bucks for parking.
I've been in the company of people who will unrepentantly drop 1500 dollars into a slot machine, but be cheap when tipping a server.
Point is, if it's really "no big deal" and you're going to spend so much money in country to help the economy, paying a fair amount to import a good shouldn't be a problem.
Right. There is a definitely disconnect when someone says "they should like me for my money" immediately following "they'll never get my money!"
I think part of it must be that when someone starts to feel rich, they start to feel entitled. "I'm rich, so I shouldn't have to pay." That's a crazy Americanism. Nowhere else in the world do we expect to get rich and THEN get freebies.
@@ScottAlanMillerVlog I wrestled in my mind with this one and I think you're right about entitlement. Also, there is resistance by some people to give anything to "little people".
Meaning, they have no problem giving to a big institution, someone they judge to be "successful" etc, but somewhere in the psyche it bothers them to think someone unworthy is getting their money.
Taylor Swift tickets for 2 grand? Why not. Buy some girl scout cookies? "I didn't bring any cash".
That is about as much sense as I've been able to make about that peculiarity of human behavior.

I have a very random question to ask. I will be traveling to Nicaragua later this week. Can you tell me what's the most amount of cordovas I can take out from an ATM. The last time I was there, I ran into so many issues. I just ended up taking it out in dollars.

Once I have a car that can cross the border I expect to be up there quite often. For me it is literally just one departmento away! But I can only make so much content. It'll be on here.
What about the business equipment that I would use as a Nomad capitalist? Are fast desktops available there powerful enough for CAD applications? Can I write off those expenses for business goods purchased there for work done for my customers in North America?
You're ability to write off expenses depends on what country you are from, not what country you are in. Americans can write off any business expenses anywhere in the world. I don't know about taxes for other countries.
We choose to bring in business equipment that we need and pay taxes on it (when applicable, which is about 10% of the time.) It's an itty bitty fee to pay for a hugely more profitable life. $500 of taxes is nothing when you are saving $5,000 every month, lol.
You CAN get anything here, but likely they will just buy it in the US and ship it in the same as you, but they'll charge you for doing it. Just do it yourself and get exactly what you need.
I moved to more expensive, but non-taxed Mac laptops. I'd rather put the money into more powerful gear than taxes. Might not work for CAD, but a super powerful laptop will never get taxed, but a big desktop might. So that's a balancing act that I do. But at the end of the day, worst case scenario is just pay the import fee and get what you want. Life is so cheap here, there has to be SOMETHING that isn't perfect.
