  • Compsanthias hawaiiensis, Hawaiian Longfin Anthias
Continuing to experiment with Topaz to resurrect old standard def videos. I ran this video through the process and wasn't as impressed with the result- many artifacts. I wasn't going to post it, but this morning I saw Anthony Gill's post revising this group (of 2 species) and placing them in a new genus: Compsanthias. So I will post this video anyway using the new moniker for this beautiful little fish. Shot near Miloli'i on the Island of Hawai'i, depth 150', June 24, 2000 with Tony Montgomery and Pete Basabe.

WOW, they are stunning. I don't know who has the cooler coloration, the male or female! Those are honestly the prettiest Anthias I have seen. Odontanthias borbonius got nothing on the Compsanthias hawaiiensis in my opinion! I wouldn't worry too much about the video artifacts, I think its still a fantastic video.

Thanks but you should see its congener, C. ventralis from other areas of the Pacific. It is even more spectacular. Unfortunately, I don't have video of that species

@@Exallias1 Holy cow, the Ventralis definitely takes the cake. I am used to my little female lyretail, so these guys absolutely take my breath away. Maybe I will follow after you and go dive and get some footage of them

@@Exallias1 Best bit about Ventralis is how wide the variation is between bioregions.
