Moved to the Big Island 3 years ago. I did study moving to Hawaii for 2 years before coming over just to make sure it will work out for us. We have never had Island fever. If we go to Hilo it feels like we had a road trip to another state! We also told our family we are parked here and not flying back. It’s been 3 years and we have no intention of changing that. So, we have lots of visitors. We love the laid back lifestyle and the warm days.
@@James-sn5mgI’m on the Al fl line and am trying to get my wife to agree to pcola or Hawaii. Only things I care about are keeping my guns (can do but will have to get 10 round mags, sucks but no biggie), skateboarding, and the beach. I can do all that there. People have different things. Long as I can be at the ocean, skate, and go to a shooting range I’m good. I know the last would be a compromise but I’m ok with it after looking up the laws. Sorry for rambling. I’m just saying people have different tastes or stuff they prioritize. So what is a big negative to you may be a positive to others Oh and reason I’m saying pcola is because it’s right down the road so will be easier to get her to agree
Vegas resident and Native Nevadan here: you come on over anytime you want! What an honor to be called the 9th Island. The thing that was bugging was Californians escaping LA for here, Reno and Tahoe, and trashing the places (which I can also speak to as we were in LA from 2012-21 and moved back to Nevada for the same reasons). Like Hawaii, we have our culture here but I think a lot of us didn't even realize it until it felt as though it was getting crowded out for a minute.
Loved the video, great information and informative as always. Love that nothing is sugar coated. Like with anywhere else, there's good/bad so just be informed prior to making the leap.
I used to live in big island and i will say ,its way different and slower there. If you are from California you will have to adapt more then others ,cause its not fast pace like it is in l.a , no six flags, you cant take motorcycle rides like you would over there , the food is expensive and sometimes not all your food you like is even sold there! Your on island time , so very relaxed and chill vibes. Your not gonna have fairs or carnvals , no baseball games ,no football, there's pretty much nothing there to do but eat and go to the water and drink kava , its completely different like completely. But i love it for that reason, i am a simple man and just love being there without all the city pollution in l.a , you can really vibe here. Just cause i said you cant do all that dont mean you cant enjoy it. Just being brutally honest
Never been to Hawaii but met somebody who goes yearly and said everyone should experience it at least once. Came across your video watching some live streams from Hawaii on RUclips.
I will be in Oahu on Tuesday and will be there for 2 weeks. This is my second visit this year. Before going there I got a great book that mentioned many things including respect for the land, the culture, and the people. I love my life as a minimalist and trying to leave “no” trace. On this trip I am bringing re-usable items because I don’t want to add trash to the beautiful island. I am from Los Angeles, California. I love Hawaii so much! Aloha! Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Totally agree with ALL 21 of your things to know... great job Maila!! I always look forward to you next video~! Keep up the awesome work. Great presentation, and professional production work, keeps me engaged throughout the entire video.
Thank you for your very informative and articulate presentation. May God bless your efforts to help the people of our world know more about what Hawaii truly is to local people like yourself.
Always wanted to visit. I’ve always been a SoCal vibe being laid back and growing up with reggae rock influences and sublime and such. Also the reverence for spirit and sacred lands. All of my fav artists and influences were impacted by Hawaii like Jack Johnson and such. Wish I did it after I was in Arizona for a bit. Unfortunately had some bad injury and had to move back to Pennsylvania. But dang. Feel like my souls calling me at 36 years old. Like I’m finally realizing what or where I’ve needed to be. Spent a lot of time in SoCal Venice and such. Just always matched my vibe with the island of misfit toys vibe and the irie vibes and Bob Marley one love!!
Clarification...Not 100% true. W/out Li-ion, there would be little to none....laptop computers, cell-phones, EVs, etc, etc. Difficult to get? Meh, 50/50. Very restricted-100%...Exceptions to every rule
Great video as always. I do think that there is some resentment of tourists, at least on Maui. I think it is also because a lot of people show up throwing money around acting like they own the place, while the locals live a more modest lifestyle. This is true of many tourism spots.
No, most people work two jobs to make ends meet. It has always been like that. I was recruited to come as a teacher. My starting wage qualified me for a free or reduced lunch at the school I taught at. Teacher lunches were a dollar, I could have applied and only paid 25 cents. It is getting harder for the residents to live day to day. Theft is a real problem in some areas because of that issue.
This video was AMAZING!!!!! I am VERY excited! If you have any insights on swimming with the dolphins and helping with sea turtle conservation, I would love to know thank you.
This was such a good and informative video! Is there a video on what the most safe and / or affordable cities are on the island of Oahu? I just spent 3 weeks there and am considering moving there now.

Eternity isn't just some fad to flaunt for validation based on geography. It's either true or not, not everything people believe can be true. However, if you're serious, contrast the main religions. If there is a supernatural creator, it wouldn't leave us without guidance. Said guidance can't be flawed. Fast tracking-there's NO proof such as historical accuracy or consistently vindicated text which is as airtight as the teachings within Islam, and said proofs are miraculous in countless ways. That's what you'd expect from something speaking truth about the supernatural, namely our creator and our purpose in existence. It gets even more interesting when you learn Jesus called God "Alaha". The creator wouldn't hide the truths to reality on the literal most remote island on the globe. That's illogical, and you don't see evidence of illogic in natural creation. So there's no sense in pretending geography makes a practice true. Search for historical, empirical, logical, philosophical, or any other form of evidence. The odds of us being naturally created by chance has more zeroes between the decimal and the first number than particles in the universe.
Move to Big Island Puna district..you will find a community around Pahoa such as you describe..you will also find the division of locals and mainlanders. Great place just be prepared...it's not all rainbows and Aloha...

Never thought about it but I would probably feel very trapped being in an island so far away from mainland. I had this same feeling when I visited The Bahamas
That would depend on whether your pain is aggravated by cold temps. If so, good. When you start seeing socks split between the thong of the flippas, you know winter is coming 😂😂
Thanks very informative I'm a self employed real estate investor, Scuba diving, sailor, and I'm working on a pilot's license, can you tell me what's the best area to get on my feet and find a place to rent?
My wife and I, both in our mid-30s, are from Germany, and I also have US citizenship. We are thinking about moving to Hawaii in maybe 5 to 10 years. Before that, we want to visit multiple times to see what it’s like to live there. We’re at the very beginning of planning, so it’s not fleshed out yet. And have some questions. Things that are important to us include getting involved with the community, culture, and history. We also want to learn Hawaiian, but we’re not sure if this would be considered rude. We think that one of the rudest things people can do when moving to a different country is refusing to be part of the culture or community and just doing their own thing, expecting everyone else to adjust to them. How easy or difficult is it for a newcomer to join a community or get to know people? Is there something we should look out for, besides using common sense? Safety is also high on our list. Crime has been mentioned in a few videos. How does this manifest in everyday life? Do people get mugged in broad daylight, or what does it look like? Another video mentioned that you can’t have nice things because someone will eventually steal them from you. We know that Hawaii is not all postcards, but we’re really excited about the thought of moving to Hawaii and also want to see the real picture, especially the cons, so there aren’t any surprises. Thank you for reading, and we’re looking forward to a reply or two. :)
Please Madame I need your precious opinion: I am 31 from Italy, In 2 years I will have 3 degrees, currently speak fluently 5 languages while I have studied 8 and I work as firmware developer in a French multinational company. Do you think I have a chance within the next two years to land a job in the tech sector in Hawaii? The 5 languages I speak: Italian, English, French, German, Chinese. Plus I have knowledge of Japanese, Spanish and Russian. The 3 degrees: Languages and cultures, Robotics, Applied artificial intelligence. The tech degrees have been undertaken under the stricter requirements of an international university in Germany.
@@GNMi79 Thank you Mr. GNMi79 for your kind reply, I am guilty of having copied and paste the same question under multiple videos (some without even watching the video) and I left out that "Sir". Your comment is very much in line with the others I have received so I changed my plans and I'll move to Switzerland. Thank you again for your comment.
@@GNMi79 Thank you very much for the even deeper insight on the job market in Hawaii. The fact that I love the most about Switzerland and in partiicular Zurich, compared to italy, is the perfect society and politics; this is largely determined by the higher quality of the average person, the stricter patroling of police, the stricter borders regulations and the fact that your boss can decide quite easily to fire you if you are not productive and if you don't have a job, then, as a foreigner, in the best case you have one year to find another job, otherwise you have to leave.
Been there 31 times. Have spent months there. I'll move there in 20 months. It's not for everyone. Small housing. It's an island. But it has nice people. Beautiful women. I love being outside every day. I could live in a shoe box. You like big houses, yards, etc., don't move there. And don't go if you have an attitude. Some people like cold weather. Some like city life. Everyone's different. So never bash anyone for where they want to live.
so "hypothetical" situation - ?? What if all the shipments of fuel and food from the US mainland were to be stopped tomorrow for some reason or another?? How long would the islands population be able to last? Is there enough food being grown on the islands to sustain the entire population for the rest of this year???
already moved here (to Maui) from Colorado in September. My wife and I moved here because her family moved here (no we’re not rich at all and neither is her family)
also yeah can relate to the shipping thing. I’m a musician and sold my amps on the main land thinking I could just buy new ones when I got here. I was lucky to buy the same model of guitar amp I had at a local music store (shoutout Bounty Music) but I couldn’t find the bass amp I had and it can’t be shipped here either.
As local Hawaiian, born/raised, have No Idea what daffy-nition of "Island Fever" entails. To me, "island fever" occurs when people try to hard to fit in, only to be met by ridicule, scorn & derision. If you Really, Truly want to fit in w/island culture... STOP! Trying So Hard to be "accepted!" Adjust S-L-O-W-L-Y a Single step at a time. You have to Crawl b4 U learn how to Walk, b4 U learn how to Run.... It's A Marathon, Not A Sprint!

@@VuNguyen-fv5jlsounds like a good way to run out of money, to me. I have a relative who is looking at homes in Oahu right now, she and her husband have to make good $ for that I'm sure. Basic homes are maybe 850k?? For me, I'm 51 and have to look towards "retirement" by getting my home payment as low as possible. So I doubt I could live there

H! Thank you for asking. Here on Oahu, it’s not common business practice to enlist an agent to help you find a rental. We primarily help sellers and buyers. We do own some of our own rentals that come up for vacancy from time to time.

Even if you do the shaka correctly, it's not like that the locals say, " hey man, you're one of us now!! That's all we wanted all along! Spread the word!! It takes a Lil more than that to be accepted in Hawaii.
Hi you seem to be a very nice person and I agree with a lot of things that you said. But there are bad things about Hawaii that should be said about paradise. There is a lot of crime here. Just park your car on a public road overnight and and when you come back the next day tires and wheels will be gone and windows will be smashed and that happens in good areas very often. I live in a condo complex and had my 2 month old scooter stolen in a good area. And homeless is a big problem here and should never be sugarcoated.

hiii, volunteering and qork exchange is pretty popular in hawaii, and i want to do it myself (wwoof, worldpackers or workaway). im from norway, europe, and im wondering if anybody know what visa i should apply for? i want to stay about a year work exchange, working not for money, but also being able to get a side job?
Never thought about it but I would probably feel very trapped being in an island so far away from mainland. I had this same feeling when I visited The Bahamas
nice video
Is Hawaii a good climate for chronic pain?
Move now!! Big island!!
Nice North Shore clio!

Is it true that actually living and working in Hawaii gets old fast??
Considering the general view everywhere you look, I wouldn't care if I were seeing it out a drive thru window or a tent on the beach😂
I thought about overworking myself at 66 but I realize I get bored to death being sedentary so staying busy is the secret to longevity
Absolutely not
so "hypothetical" situation - ?? What if all the shipments of fuel and food from the US mainland were to be stopped tomorrow for some reason or another?? How long would the islands population be able to last? Is there enough food being grown on the islands to sustain the entire population for the rest of this year???
I highly doubt it
Hawaii get shipments elsewhere too
This is so funny! Lol
already moved here (to Maui) from Colorado in September.
@@ChicagoGuy77 I work at lowes in Kahului as a sales specialist
@@calebbliss8626look for ads people selling them on eBay?
@@calebbliss8626why can't it be shipped?
@@kbanghart Idk man all the retailers I found that sold it wouldn’t ship it to Maui lol.
Do you miss not being able to get in your car take a road trip? This is why so many people living in Hawaii get island fever.
@@GNMi79so, road trips aren't really a thing there I guess.. lol
Why did they have to ruin International Market Place?!?😭
Ruined how?
@@kbanghart it was mostly kiosks with individual sellers and often one of a kind stuff now just mass produced crap with a big brand name making millions.
No different than how Walfart hurt mom and pop and small towns.
When I was in Hawaii, across from Kaimana beach parking was free😅😅😅. Before we were leaving there they started charging….so now no free parking😂😂😂😂
🤙🏻
Hi I am moving to Hawaii from Virginia. Can you give me tips where to get a place which is safe And good for work. Love to get a land then I can build a small house. Thanks for the information God bless
If you need a place to work in Hawaii, building a home is NOT for you
@@VuNguyen-fv5jlsounds like a good way to run out of money, to me.
I have a relative who is looking at homes in Oahu right now, she and her husband have to make good $ for that I'm sure. Basic homes are maybe 850k??
For me, I'm 51 and have to look towards "retirement" by getting my home payment as low as possible. So I doubt I could live there
I still would love to move there regardless of what she says besides half of that stuff I don't need anyway
I get don’t move here lol. I feel her though
Technically there's no smoking or drinking alcohol on the beaches. Wish it was enforced
All the good Fish comes from Chef zone….😂…ask all the food trucks 🛻
I'm a broker in Kansas City. I hope to eventually move to Hawaii. Thank you for the truth. Lmk if you need any KC mls info!
I Love Waikiki rent a condo then buy.LOL😁😁😁😁
The truth is not in this video,
It will be your experience when you actually live here,
Enjoy your time and be safe on the roads,
Learn alllll of the backroads when traffic hits,
Be aware hikes are accessible and not also due to weather conditions
Just be mindful of spendings, budget
And speak positively on your experiences with people who you meet here!
Aloha 🤙🏽
Do you have a property management team that caters to renters not homebuyers? 🙂
H! Thank you for asking. Here on Oahu, it’s not common business practice to enlist an agent to help you find a rental. We primarily help sellers and buyers. We do own some of our own rentals that come up for vacancy from time to time.
Please come and spend your life savings and Split.Aloha?
No hay problema en mudarme entonces porque mi madre fue hija única y yo soy hija única. Mi abuela ya falleció y ahora que tengo a mi bebé y a mi esposo. Me llevo a mi madre conmigo y mi pequeña familia para empezar de 0.
God bless you'll be fine
😁😁😁😁😁😁 Great Job had 5 houses YOUR one is worth more..😍😍😍😍😍 How did the Dem Gov do in Maui ??? ALOHA
Does the young man in the orange shirt think Hawaii is a foreign country? He said we are foreigners here.
Hawaii is the best foreign country in the USA. He knows; he is there; he is living it, right?😉
Even if you do the shaka correctly, it's not like that the locals say, " hey man, you're one of us now!! That's all we wanted all along! Spread the word!! It takes a Lil more than that to be accepted in Hawaii.
Its a fever dream
I'm gonna retire somewhere in Hawaii soon. Louisiana is a horrible place .
Louisiana is a shithole
There's good and bad areas wherever you live.
@@markdinkel-uh2je Louisiana is just bad. Lol.jk
My bike was stolen in less than one day even though I had it chained they took everything they could disassemble from it
It's like living in Florida in some way..
So I’m a black man getting ready to retire do you think I’ll have a problem with racism here in the big island of Hawaii?
Maybe Afrika would be more welcoming. 🤔
