So sorry to hear about this. We got hit in Georgia as well. Sending up prayers for all of our states affected! North Carolina,South Carolina,Tennessee,Georgia,Florida and Virginia 💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏🙏
We were camping at Deep Creek Campground in the Smoky Mountains last week. We kept watching the weather and packed up and left out Thursday morning at 4:30am after the 1st rain event ended and before the hurricane rains started. Thank God we left when we did. We were walking around your beautiful little town all day Wednesday. We went to Darnell Farms on Wednesday too. I hate to see the damage. I hope no one was killed there. God Bless Bryson City. Praying for you guys.
I've camped at Deep Creek with family several times. One of our favorites cuz there's something fun for everyone not far away. You made a wise decision to leave when you did.
So glad you, your Sister and Mom are safe. I thought of you through the day and kept looking to see if you had posted. And I didn’t forget Kody either 🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕
My heart breaks for everyone who lost everything in this storm. Two of my favorite places to visit North Carolina and Tennessee. Never seen destruction like this in my 43 years on this earth in these two states that I love. Hopefully the government will step up and help rebuild and help these individuals in need who lost everything. Prayers go out to the families who lost loved one's as well.
I'm speaking from experience it's going to take a very very long time dealing with insurance companies I'm not going to mention the insurance company but it rhymes with State Farm
Melissa very sad what Helene has caused for so many in the southeast seems Tennessee & North Carolina suffers the brunt of it. I am glad for you that you are on higher ground. But the clean up will have a lot of effect on goods & service for a period of time. Stay safe!
I guess they had to make a choice to release some of the water, or risk the dam collapsing which would have been much worse. As long as it was damage to buildings and property and no human lives were lost, that was a win, since as you said, it could have been much worse.
NC needs to be looking at their overall infrastructure. Eastern Carolina was sacrificed to Raleigh in previous major storm event, and it has taken years to recover. Little towns and farming communities don't have the same clout.
I don’t live there but I’ll never forget this hurricane and all the havoc wrecked on many states. Prayers to the deceased families. I couldn’t cross that bridge.. 😳😬
We’re okay! Our sewage/water system is very large and advanced so it was able to alleviate SOME of the flood waters but the Oconaluftee was still incredibly high and dangerous! 😬 Some minor damage to our island parks and a couple of houses but overall we are okay. I heard Soco was hit the worst. And that there was a massive landslide blocking the mountain road even still. But as far as I know we didn’t have any deaths or missing people. A few were hurt but only a small handful. Overall? We are doing pretty good… Especially considering how bad it was/is elsewhere… 😕😞. Edit: The Tribal Internet somehow managed to stay up the whole time! Which allowed people to still get help mostly, even though phone service and satellite was down.
I'm glad to hear you're OK over there. I'm going to try and drive a few places to look, even though it's a few days later. The water here is still high, nothing like it was. But, i didn't want to go explore too much right when it was getting bad! I went home, stayed there! We thought the bridge here would wash out! They were yelling at people to get off the bridge. It got real scary for a while. It could have been so much worst here.
@@brennenfoerst3908 We have several friends in Cherokee and were getting worried. My wife is doing the Wilco Powwow in Lebanon, TN and shes too busy to let me know what the dancers and vendors are hearing from Cherokee. Thanks for the update. Blessings....

Thank you for the video, I have spent some 30 years coming and going to Bryson City with wonderful memories memories..So glad it's not as bad as I imagined. My thoughts and prayers to all affected by the storm .😢 God Bless you. Judy from Boca
So sad to see! I bet the Nantahala River flooded. Is the Nantahala the river that you usually take Kody to? That may too much of a river to take him. Hate seeing all those campers flooded. Some people live in their RVs so it may be everything they own under water. So heartbreaking when you think of all the people that have lost homes and lives! Glad you and your family are all safe! Glad your tiny homes are on higher ground! I've had to evacuate several times living on Hilton Head Island. It gets expensive between food, gas & hotels when you have to leave your home! Glad you & your sister didn't have to incur that expense!
I've a lot of cousins & their familys in Bryson, any word from the Crisp folks would be most appreciated. & how did the old Calhoun House fair the storm & floods?
This was from Friday, i could just post now, we still have no cell service here. The water has gone down. Thankfully, it could have been much worst. I think some stores in town suffered some damage, but i haven't heard ant other damage except maybe right on the river.
I've only lived here, just about 2 months now, so i don't really know anyone. I'm sorry! I know i can go to the library for a signal, many people go there to check in with family...
I have not! I have no service, only when i go to the library and sit. I heard sylva and dillsboro have limited cell service too that way. That's all i know. I also read someplace on fb that they saw flooding too.
@@italian_grl thank you. I would think they had some flooded. I’m leading a church group of about 13 or 15 people up to Dillsboro in mid October. We have reservations to stay at the best Western River escapes in Dillsburg. Their phone has been out of course, but I don’t want to cancel things although things look die. When they do get back on their feet in that area, they will need some tourist dollars and some kind words. I was in Bryson City in 2018 and rode the GSMRR excursion steam train. It's a wonderful small town, and had a lot of charm. I'm glad they didn't have the same fate as some of the other towns further in the mountains. The river there crested a few feet below the flood of record. The French Broad river upstream of Asheville actually crested around 10 feet higher than the previous flood of record for that river. Definitely Could have been much worse for Bryson City. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for sharing! My family rents a cabin on a creek on Issac Wiggins Road every December when we come for the Polar Express and I’m hoping that the house hasn’t been washed away and that the family who owns it is okay!
Great coverage! Thank you. My friend just moved to Whittier from Bryson City (only 10 minutes away) 2 months ago. So it is very sad to see one of our favorite places to visit in such a state… 😞. It’s not as bad as elsewhere I know but…. It’s still pretty bad. And definitely sad. Happy they weren’t hit as hard as they could have been. And bless those trying to recover! I’m only 15 minutes away in Cherokee. Perhaps I’ll make a trip over there soon.
I love this town. I worked as a raft guide on the Nantahala river. And spent a lot of time in Bryson City. I still visit, including a few months ago.. I will pray for all of western NC and East TN hit by the storm. As a whitewater kayaker, I've seen many floods. But none as big as this one, across the area.

We make more people, who in turn want places to live. Some want to build a cottage in the forest, others buy a new condo in a development that was 20 acres of virgin forest. But the forest is a watershed. Its thousands of trees send roots into ground Roots to slow the movement of water through the soil and carry some into the trees to fuel growth. Instead of the rains being slowed by forests, creeks that used to slowly carry excess water away, now are overwhelmed and small rivers flood their banks. We have replaced forests with bigger asphalt roads, residential construction, service areas, amusement parks and theme malls. These don't aid in water retention and groundwater recharge. They enhance overland sheet flow and accelerate rapid runoff and flooding.
Hi Melissa, wow this storm did a lot of flooding. My prayers go out to everyone affected by this. I'm glad you all are on higher ground and are ok. Take care, hug Kody tight for me. 🙏
Thanks for this. My grandfather built the bidg where the chinese restaraunt is and ran his furniture store there for 40 years. He built the house next door and that's where they lived. My mom taught 3rd grade on school house hill during ww2.
We just rode the train at Bryson back in March and we walked those very streets that are now flooded. As we rode the train and saw all the beautiful creeks and waterfalls, I understand how all the large amounts of water flowing off the mountains would cause gentle streams and creeks to become raging torrents.
I'm in Florida and only 20 miles from the west coast and barely got wind or rain. My heart goes out to you people up there as that place was my go to place if my place in Florida got destroyed by a hurricane.
