I am so heartbroken for this community. My late husband’s daughter was married there. The people are super friendly and kind. Stayed at the Biltmore one night. I had falling and broke a rib, my husband was on dialysis and not well. I had folks helping us left and right, will me in my 🙏.

Agree. Although not nearly as vital, it will also suck badly for car traffic. I love to go to Townsend, TN and have been through this area many times. I40 near the border made me very anxious before all this. Inevitably I would find myself between the divider wall and a big rig in a curve.
former trucker in NC here. Probably gonna be going up or down 77 to go around, thru charlotte/greenville to georgia if going towards southern atates, and up 77 to 81 in virginia and then down to knoxville or into kentucky if you're going to nashville/midwest

I think they’re concerned that their economy might suffer as well, because this time of year, leaf-spotting tourists usually go to mountain regions to see the fall colors. Tourists may be reluctant to go there because of the devastation and unsafe driving conditions. I pray for those affected by Helene.
How do they fix this? Fill in the lost soil and build again on top of that?? Yipes, this is massive damage. Nepal is having the same problems right now with flooding
The man made structure on the right is damaged from high speed water erosion while the Forest on the left is unharmed. Rivers need natural vegetation buffer zones to absorb the extra water from the increasingly high flows. If they just rebuild it like it was it will be washed down stream in a few years.

That was a 4 lane highway! In places there, the whole 2 outside lanes fell off or were completely undermined. It was not the "shoulder". Get real, stop minimizing this! People are suffering!

Maybe this is just what the people of Colorado need to encourage them to travel by boat more often. It's easier on the mountains. Uses less gas, and the fish seem to like it.

I'm pretty sure that's the eastbound side...and the Pigeon Forge River. I could be wrong as it's been 12 years since I lived there but the shot of the double tunnel...the lower side is heading back to Asheville.
That stretch of I40 is scary on a good day, and terrifying on a rainy night.

As a truck driver I used to drive very often on I-40. This is going to be truck driver nightmare

We run local to Knoxville each night and he has to take 77 to 81 for a long time. I will stick with my Myrtle Beach and back.

If you mean Woodleaf close to Salisbury, it is fine. I am 20 minutes from there. We got 2"-3" of rain.
Alit of People dont know it but Yellowstone's Roads got washed out like that a year ago or two. Steamboat was getting HOT! It Downpoured like Crazy!
