I for one never thought the 70’s sucked. And as time passes my appreciation for that magical decade only grows stronger.

The 70's were the best and the worst. "it was the best of times. It was the worst of times." C. Dickens. Great music. Great times. Solo Beatles, The Who, Jethro Tull, Traffic, Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Motown, Superfly, Curtis Mayfield!!!!!!!!!! I'd get psyched alone in my bedroom lights out with Led Zeppelin before high school basketball. We went 19-4 in 1972, and man, what a time.
One game, we were behind by 3 with a minute left, and I dribbled the ball of my right sneaker. The radio announcers, all two of them couldn't believe it. Me too. We lost. I cried. Friends picked me up in the yellow VW microbus with Schiltz and Hashish. Fifteen minutes later.... "Hey, I'm ok now, guys!"
      "What, me worry" A. Newman

This multitalented, unsung, musician shaped the lives of many prominent singers in the 70's (James Taylor, Carly Simon, Jackson Brown and countless others). He was unfortunately taken away from us way too young. Lonely Boy is a unique, progressive-for-it's-time, musically complex, and touching song released in 1976, and has been featured in many movies. Many people can relate to the heart breaking sibling rivalry, and stark, painful, individual loneliness potrayed in this song. There hasn't been another like it.

Being an unwanted child is an extremely painful ordeal. I know firsthand from experience. Those that have not seen or experienced this tragic situation cannot possibly understand what that does to a person! Just try to imagine what it would be like to be sitting in your room & hearing the rest of your family talking and laughing in the next room & to know that if you tried to go and join in you would not be welcome. In fact you'd be mocked, tormented and terrorised until you couldn't take it anymore & left. And that was the very least of the lifelong trauma that was inflicted on you. There are countless other things being done to traumatize you with even the parents joining in. Most people don't even know that these kinds of things happen every day. It becomes all you know and flavors every single relationship you have. It can emotionally damage you to the point where you can't have a good relationship because you don't know how to engage with people that are not cruel and vicious. That's all you've ever known so you don't know how to have a normal relationship with someone. This is part of the reason so many people are in abusive relationships and stay. We just don't know any other way! It's so sad! Any kind of abuse is horrible but there's a special place for those that abuse children, especially when it's their own! It is awful to realize how horrible this really is and the fact that it's just another day for them. It's just truly one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever known! I'm glad you had no idea since that means you were not abused in that way! I'd never want anyone to feel as devastated as I am! But please, now that you know, try to be supportive of others that are trying to deal with this kind of thing. If nothing else, please, be kind! It could be the only kindness they have ever had. Thank you ❤

The songwriting, the musicianship, the performance, the energy is bar none. This was made in the era of great music that lasted through the 80s, sputtered in the 90s, and eventually died in the insipid booty call nonsense of the 2000s.

All the hacks nowadays have their songs all pre-written by someone they maybe never meet. They show up to the mic and "sing" into it and leave. The engineers then electronically manipulate it to death until it's just soulless crap. They then scrape in the hundreds of millions.

A timeless masterpiece by a gifted singer/songwriter himself: Andrew Gold. This is the type of music that keeps me moving, and never gets me bored. I could play this over and over. This "Lonely Boy" track hit the top of the charts in the '70s. It became one of the most frequently listened to songs on the radio at the time in 1977. This very special song brings me back to great memories. What a great singer Andrew Gold was. God bless him!!

you can never underestimate the impact that music has on children. They are so affected by it. I remember being three years old and having a vague sense of what this song meant. Children will try to unravel ANY mystery to understand the world. I wonder if kids today have the same opportunities to develop their imaginations and sense of wonder in a way that really allows them to be kids and retain their innocence... I don't know...

I love Andrew. Not just his music. He was born on a summer day, Aug 2nd 1951. Same as me. LOL. He says the song was not autobiographical, only that date, and that he had a wonderful childhood. Now he may have had the 2nd greatest mom of all time. She was probably the most famous movie star, YOU NEVER HEARD OF. Yes, Marni Nixon, was the voice of Maria in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King and I, and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. She was TREMENDOUS. And to think she was in labor with my mom. hehehe. Want my autograph? lol. Seriously though, I love Andrew's music, and as was said, he was an awesome influence and helper of so many other talented people. I miss him, and thank him for being my friend in such an obscure way.

Even though this song is mainly about the one "lonely boy", I think the final verse is the most important one of the song, where it talks about his nephew being a lonely boy as well. The theme of the song is that there are lonely men in every generation, and it just keeps going on and on, while most people ignore it. The cycle continues...
