- This is a Topop classic!
The Babys are a British rock group best known for their songs "Isn't It Time" and "Every Time I Think of You". Both songs were composed by Jack Conrad and Ray Kennedy, and they reached No. 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on the Cashbox chart in the late 1970s. The classic Babys line-up consisted of founding member keyboardist/guitarist Michael Corby, and, in order of joining the group, vocalist/bassist John Waite, drummer Tony Brock and guitarist Wally Stocker.
In this Toppop recording of 7 January 1978 one of the Dutch back-up singers is Margriet Eshuys of Dutch band Lucifer. Anyone recognises the other singer?
This hit reached #4 on the Dutch Top 40 on 4 on 14 January 1978

I was a music director at a radio station when this song was released. I immediately saw it as a "hit" and put it on the station. I'm proud to say that I received a coveted "gold record" award commemorating being one of the first stations in the U.S. to play it. I've always loved this song!
Which station? City?

Great story Gary!!! ❤️
Awesome!
Great song 🎶
John Waite doesn’t get the recognition he deserved in his day. His ballads are priceless
trying to see him tour this summer w Foreigner and Styx!!
And his hair is divine ❤
❤
Gorgeous voice.
I agree!
This is from a time when we took amazing music for granted.
so true we did
I continue the practice.
It mostly ended in 1980….never recovered.
So true.
That is a big Understatement .
Still sounds great in 2024!
BETTER
Can’t wait, seeing him tonight!
They don’t make music like this anymore. John Waite is a legend.
As well as Jonathan Cain!
Check out the Cannon's .. Their melody's will suck you in. The whole album is amazing.
In my house time less
Yes He Is! ❤
Great song. Only sad thing is realizing there will never be another 70s decade to live through!
So many memories from that time.
Never say never!
2070…..only I will be 99 yrs old. Have fun everyone.
At least we have You Tube to revisit our favorite songs.
But we that were there, oh how lucky we are.
The Backing Vocals from the Young Ladies was magical! That's how GREAT songs are made!
I agree the ladies are killing it !!
Agree. Fantastic song but I always felt that the background vocals made the song. Nice to put faces to the voices.
The backup singers look like sisters to me
John Waite was definitely ahead of his time. True talent!
Knew John in the 80's when he had success on his own. One of the nicest, most regular people you could ever want to meet.
The Baby's were grossly underrated
Not by me.
@@chriskelly6559 Not by me either. I liked their music a lot. I just think with all the big rock bands they didn't get the recognition they really deserved.
One of my faves for sure! Loved Midnight Rendezvous first time I heard it in the early 80s!
wrong
Actually, they weren’t. But thanks for your comment.
the 70s will always be the era of the best music bar none
When I first heard John I was blown away. Then I saw MTV and he looked like the coolest rock guy ever
Simply the best backup singers I’ve ever heard
Check out the two girls from Steely Dan's Showbiz Kids performed live on The Midnight Special.
The backup singers are awesome on this one.
CRIMINAL THIS SONG WASN'T NUMBER #1 ,, STILL HOLDS UP AND THE MUSICAL ARRANGEMENT AND VOCALS IS MUSICAL PERFECTION !!
It was number 1 in Australia ! March 1978
@@jayjoy9659 GOOD !! THANK YOU 😊
What makes John Waites songs even more awesome are the backup singers..
That's what I said..
And those horn fills...
That voice and melody! Those haunting keyboard!! The horns! The backup singers! That bass! How pop music can get a bad rap is beyond me. Listen to this song and it immediately takes me to a much needed happy place. Thanks Mr Waite and all you talented musicians.
Don't you love these lip sync videos?
@@denairby7454 Love how you know when the lead singer stuffs up and it's not edited out !
Echos of Motown
Pop music ?
Well it depends on the era don't you think?
Spot on my friend! Every single word.
When I can't decide whether I want to listen to classic rock, a ballad, a great pop song, or disco, I always choose this tune.
Well said @zebra3stripes.
I agree 👍
I agree and do same!

Saw John Waite a couple of years ago. His voice is still incredible and what a performer. Never gets old
8th grade, had a class called music appreciation, it consisted of us going to class there was a juke box in the corner, I'd go over and punch this song in and we'd sit around and just shoot the breeze. Great memories, love this song. Try out shake down cruise too, makes me smile.
I forgot about his song and heard it the other day and fell in love with it all over again
There's nothing better than the great songs of the past I'm sixty years old I would rather hear this great music than what kids listen to knowadays ❤
I would have to agree with you.
My grandmother said the same thing about the musicians on the Lawrence Welk show… 🤭 😅
@@KittyGrizGrizExactly. Each generation has its voice
Yeah, but Lawrence Welk never made music that gave you energy and made you get up and dance@@KittyGrizGriz
@@joebobb7349 Well, to be perfectly honest when I was 14 & visiting my grandma (out of state), I’d tease her a little for watching the show, as it was kinda corny to a young teen. But I secretly wanted to be one of the dancers on the LWS, or a dancer on the variety shows aka Carol Burnett that we had back then. I think I was probably dancing in the womb, as I love it & wish I’d pursued dance as a profession. Cheers!
One of the best songs ever written and performed !
I know I could listen to it over and over a masterpiece
I love the two female backup singers. Their look, demeanor, smiles, moves etc. fit 1978 perfectly.
They look like sisters
The original backup singers were three females from Andre Crouch andThe Disciples. Lisa Freeman-Roberts,Myrna Matthews and Pat Henderson. They are seen on the original video.
@@tammypleasant2958with Marti McCall they were The Babettes.
Love their glance at each other and slight smiles when Waite messes up the lip sync at 2:47 mark. 😂 It also appeared that Waite was extremely ticked at himself which I’m sure he was being a consummate professional.
One of them is Margriet Eshuis, a Dutch singer , probably only filling in for this TV recording as she was from Dutch band Lucifer herself@@lewisner
This is one of the best songs of the late '70s...love it even more all these years later!
It was a great song by a great band!
The Backup Singers Really Make This Song Work ..
That was a seriously underrated band right there!! Freaking John Waite was so talented. I was too young then, but discovered them afterwards. Love em
Too Bad Waite got Fat Head and thought he was Bigger than the Band. His Solo Career was brief, had he stayed who knows where the Babys would be now.
I got to see them back then and they put on a good concert. The rumor was back then they broke up because their keyboard player decide to quit and go play for journey
They weren't underrated at the time.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:”
I was wondering when he will get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He needs to be!!
Ah the beautiful man with the just as beautiful voice.
Amazing music 🎼🎼🎼🎼 1970s are back 🎉to 🎉 6/3/2024
A simply fabulous song - in all ways!!
My dad did the string and horn arrangements on this tune
He did good!!!!
What an epic song, epic vocals by the great John Waite. Song just never gets old.
In my dorm...guess the year!...I bought the Andrew Gold album with OH What A Lonely Boy and my dorm mates fell in love with it...1975...
Opened for the Eagles...One of my all time favorite artists. I never felt he got the recognition he deserved...but one of my favorite artists.
Very underrated band, lots of good melodic tunes!
They had a couple catchy tunes... not underrated. Nothing special really
I had a 72 TA 455 SD in High school after I ditched the 273 gear and went with a 373 posi, Woke that beast up, after I went in the Navy the aircraft I worked on had 4 Radial engines with 3 superchargers per engine and used 115/145 octane fuel That also went into the TA made it a beast!
Awesome song, just close your eyes and you are back in the 70s. What a great feeling and john waite had it all❤❤
I agree with you too about that
LISTEN TO" EVERYTIME I THINK OF YOU".....
I WISH!!!!!
His hair, outfit, makeup and look are perfect. 💕
One of my favorite songs in the world from my teenage years with nothing but respect 🕊️ and lots of 🎶💕 this inspired one of my other favorite bands from what I understand from back in the day to write a song about them to their record company
Great song. And the backup singers have a beautiful harmony.
Classic classic song, maybe the best underrated song ever.It really don’t come much better than this
I agree. a song/record that should be up there with the best power ballads of all time.
The Babys is the most underrated song ever? Gawd you sound stupid.
Wasn't underrated in Australia, topped the charts here. Remember it well, great song.
@@marknorris1381 it sure did, went all the way to #1, the fact that it didn't here says a lot about why we've evolved into a talentless, lackluster bunch of overly synthesized kids who can barely carry a tune!
never was underated, this is there most popular tune.
My mom got a promo album of their first album. The album cover was cool so I listened to it and was blown away. This was before radio was playing them.
So 80’s - yet they were the HEAVY in the heavy metal! Thanks for the nice reaction 40 years into my faves to validate the true rock and roll mastery !
I wish i could go back to the 70s,just for a little while and play with my boy cousins. They are all gone now,,I miss our music growing up.i used to stay up on Saturday night ,so I could watch,THE Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack
Such a great talent, his voice has not changed at all. He was always so handsome, cute...has grown into himself..has aged very, very nicely.
Killer Bassline 😍
Will definitely be listening to this in my ‘77 Trans Am this summer.
Wow, you are a very lucky man! I always wanted to own a 70s firebird or trans am. I did own a 1994 firebird that I actually drove for 14 years and then sold for $2,200. It was nice to have a new car but it wasn't very exciting. Hands down, the old ones are the only ones that count.
Mid 70s to early 80s were great. Long hair, single, a lovely date every weekend. Transport me back, please.
hold on I'm go'n wit ya !
No cell phone no water bottles we just go ! :)
My Gentle Pitt Bull
I am ready when The time machine is ready.
Me too. I think I was about 15 when this song came out. Take me back to the late 70s and 80s.
Please!!! Take me with you!!! I'll pay you anything for that trip!!
Was lucky to hear John Waite in 2019 in RI. He commanded the stage with that voice- still strong and beautiful.
Loved this song! The ladies on back up vocals amazing
Midnight rendezvous!
Total classic never get sick of hearing it timeless
This was an amazing record. The piano and the background singers make it but John Waite's vocal performance can't be faulted. One of the most beautiful songs ever IMO.
Saw John Waite 2 nights ago. He's still awesome!
This song never gets old! Loved The Babys and still love John Waite❤❤
I remember it being played on radio 1 in 77. Never understood why it didn’t do well, perhaps it was simply too good😌
The 70's personified! Absolutely fantastic, where have those days gone?................
couldn't agree more the trash today isn't music unless someone can sing well with good or great music supporting them, but this is now few and far between,

Haunting melody. Absolutely beautiful composition. Over the top performance. Takes me back in a flash to 1977, when I first heard it at a Chicago record store.
Back then all young people wanted to learn to play an instrument. Time was simpler then and more wholesome things to where encouraged
Such a great song! Love the backup singers!
His eyes ❤ his voice still get me
Jon Waites voice is beautiful. I had not heard this song in decades and it popped up while I was scrolling through my instagram. I was a senior in high school when the song hit the charts. It flooded my mind with so many memories. I was teary the rest of the day - happy tears not sad ones of “days gone by”.
John Jimmy waite what a great rock voice and underrated band
John Waite, so underrated. Great song!
John Waite had a great voice and vocal range! Hard to believe their debut album from '78 is some 45 yrs ago
And the bass line John is laying down. Awesome
Fondly remember this great song from the fall of 1977.
I was 22. Jeez.
Love the background vocals on this song
@garlandtreasure,• they are irreplaceable

soooo good, god it's so good.
A long forgotten song until recently-- I had forgotten this tune and how well it was performed.
I feel you!! It's just an incredible song!!
Great production. The blending of strings, brass and backing vocals is excellent.
I'm afraid your factual comment will fly over the heads of many here... I mean, the lip syncing and guitars not plugged in comments.... Pffffft.
This was the best thing John Waite ever did.
@@acertainshape The Babys in general was his best work but The Babys' best songs were not written by him. I think most of their songs were written for the band by someone outside the band.
Amen sister! ✌️🎸🎤🔥🥁🎹🤟🖐️

Wore out The Babys Anthology tape in junior high school. So many great songs.

A master piece of smooth rock and R&B
John Waite is simply epic
What a great song …one of the best ever that goes from 0 to a 100 very quickly it’s amazing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Those back up singers are 🔥 🔥 🔥🤘🤘🤘
One of the best songs ever made
I was 11 years old when this came out. I loved it. Still do!
one of the underrated band in rock history
What an amazing composition - beautiful music, harmonies, piano, singing, melody, voice. Perfect song!
Great song and love the bass line.
One of the best songs ever produced. Top 5 on my list. The Baby's first two hit songs were incredible. After that the Baby's/John Waite weren't quite the same except "Back On My Feet Again"...
This is such a killer song! I love the piano at the beginning.
Such a beautiful song.❤ I love the background singers.
“I’ve seen visions of someone like you in my life” reminds me of my boyfriend.💜
Him and his music was very theatrical wasn’t it. Great 🎶.
John Waite ❤️
I think about the 45 I had of this song! I was barely a teen! The Chrysalis label!!! THIS SONG DOES MAKE LIFE GREAT AGAIN!! ❤❤❤
ISN'T IT TIME FOR SOMEONE TO BUILD THE TIME MACHINE?
They exist trust that
I love the lady singer on the left she is beautiful, plus you can tell she's a sweet girl too. I do like both singers though plus Mr Waite and the rest of the band is rockin too even though it was prerecorded
The lady on the right passed away one year ago.

Piano with the romantic lyrics sound so good! Wish I’d never heard piano teacher telling mom I couldn’t read music but could play by ear, made me feel like I sucked & gave it up. Little girl dreams. Bass player-lead singer-great voice & backup singers,,,yep! So cool!! 🎉🎉🎉
What a Classic! I hadn't heard it in Years until I went to this Black Owned Soul Food Restaurant here in My Town and they were Playing Great Music of the 70s.
Amazing voices and music. Especially the back up singers make this song outstanding 👌
Decades on still rocking to the beat and the lyrics. A gem of a song, which rekindles past memories. Definitely still one of my favourites in 2024!
This song takes me right back to Amsterdam in 1977 when I was a teenager far from home. Loved it then and love it, still an amazing composition beautifully executed with great vibrancy.
The two ladies singing back-up vocals grab my heart and pull me back to a

This song is timeless. It's too bad that the swings of life gave this band some bad misfortune, death of their guitarist and keyboard player, but this song in the 80's for s short time, The Babys were on top of their game, and the prettiest band at that!
“Losin’ this love will be your mistake”
Great song how cute was he !!!
The Baby’s are such an underrated band! Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏽
This is a masterpiece
