Take a listen to John Powell’s How to Train Your Dragon - gorgeous orchestrations, amazing storytelling (even without dialogue), and just a terrific piece of music.
HUGE LORD OF THE RINGS AND TWOSET FAN HERE absolutely made my day seeing you guys not even hesitating to put lord of the rings in the S-tier. howard shore is truly INCREDIBLE! thanks for always making me smile :)
Them arriving to LOTR and just being like "Oh yeah, just, just up there, no need to even listen to it" makes me VERY happy. My favorite movie soundtrack ever.
Lion king Mufasa's death theme is EPIC. Hans Zimmer actually wrote it as a requem for his father, which makes it a 10000 times more beautiful and for someone like me that lost a father too, makes it seem so private. He's a genius.
I agree… lion king soundtrack is gorgeous and amazing. I can hear the death theme in my head right now… so beautiful. I didn’t know that it was related to his own father’s death. I don’t think they studied hard for this video… if they had, Lion King would have to be an S!
Song is called Stampede , when I was in high school our band took a trip to Walt Disney World, during which we got to rehearse this song with a Disney conductor. As a brass player its one of the most fun experiences I’ve had playing an instrument.
The Lion King is overrated in every aspect. Listen to the soundtracks that Menken and Ashman wrote: Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin. They're all so much better.
@@dominikgarbauer6883 And in other parts too, there is a lot of Mozart in the Lion King soundtrack. Kind of genius to think he's combining african tribal music and mozart and it fits perfectly
“He’s a Pirate” is great and all but there are so many underrated songs from those soundtracks like “Up is Down” and “One Day” which will just hit you in the feels. Also Davy Jones’ theme, not underrated but I felt the need to include it.
As an amateur Tolkien nerd, it is fitting that the LOTR movies have incredible music considering that in the Silmarillion, the entire world is created through an act of music.
@@MusicalJackknife 😅I'm gonna assume you're not old enough to drive. Masterfully? Even as a teen one should be able to notice Lewis's dull prose, characterization and intrusive hand holding. It's a great idea, fairly compelling at first. The execution, however, is levels below Tolkien's. The comparison is almost comical.
@@eduardobenassi3072 Ooh, SoMeBoDy learned enough words to start getting condescending on RUclips, but can't read a comment right. My second sentence was in reference to the subject of the first, i.e. Tolkien's work. Still, Lewis was a master in his own right, obviously both wrote works for a range of different audiences. The Narnia books aren't going to have the same tone or narrative depth as the Space Trilogy, and though even that can be a slog at times, Tolkien has things like the Silmarillon which often reads like the driest Old Testament chronicles.
I think it would be really interesting to hear their ranking of iconic Disney songs. Although I could take or leave the movie, I absolutely love Colors of the Wind because of the orchestration.
It isn’t really a famous movie but I think you guys would enjoy the soundtrack from The Prince of Egypt- all songs, but specifically “Deliver Us”. It’s sooo good 😫
Y'all knew this would be copyright stricked for damn sure. Despite that you guys make this lovely video for our enjoyment. That's some Ling Ling power there, love it. Edit: Wow, thank you for more than a 1000 likes!
@@jyotsnasrivastava6373 my dude I could write a longer essay than you did about the musical themes in Shrek's film soundtrack that can never be summed up by one friggin Smash Mouth song, but I don't because life's too short to pretend musicians giving their own PERSONAL OPINION is in any way the same as an objective ranking. they didn't like Frozen's soundtrack, has Frozen suddenly lost the Oscar it won for that same soundtrack? are they poopheads because they had a favorite part to play on violin when they were making an entire Evolution of Disney medley? wow such hate for Disney music to arrange and play a full length video's worth of it! take Elsa's advice and let it go man, you're not doing anyone any favours with your rant least of all the songs you claim to love
@@jyotsnasrivastava6373 I like that u weren’t brave enough to post that as a stand-alone comment and instead had to put it as an unrelated reply to someone else. Please keep your negative thoughts to urself, doesn’t do you or anyone else any good
OHHHH BOY OH BOY OH BOY! Joe Hisaishi, Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer works are definitely S tier (even tho not featured in this vid, i’d argue Prince of Egypt is Hans’ best work)👌 Now, as a horn player, i’d move a few SW films up to S tier as well 😜
Yeah, they barely listened to the songs. And one single 2-minutes piece is not enough to value a soundtrack. Not even listening to it alone. Putting Titanic, The Godfather, Schindler List and so others so low is criminal. It was such a shallow and poor analysis. Also, compiling all Harry Potter, Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks together is hard to analyze, mainly HP because they had different compsers.
@@benfox6292 You've clearly never actually listened to the Jaws soundtrack or all of Dvorak 9 and only know of the 2-note motif that connects the two. Guess what? Those two notes are the only thing that is similar between Dvorak 9 and Jaws. I guess you forgot about the entire rest of the symphony, and the entire rest of the soundtrack. Apart from those two notes, they are nothing alike.
I know it’s not mainstream, but one of my favourite OSTs is “Pride and Prejudice” (2005version), while I love most of the pieces for its calm nature, I totally fell in love with how the composer Dario Marianelli used Purcell’s “Abdelazar” and made a violin version out of it, giving the dance scene in the movie beautiful emotions ♡
I remember watching this loads when I was little because my mom loved the music and the story and my dad loved the story and cinematography. I've never not liked it no matter how many times I've watched it. Such a masterpiece.
OH!! lol I'm a die hard advocate of the 1995 version's production/acting and I love that soundtrack as well so I was excited for a bit. lololol Maybe you'd like the 1995 soundtrack.
of course Eddy has seen Twilight and Brett hasn't 😂 but Bella's Lullaby is god-tier simply because of the choke hold it had on teenaged girls in the 2010s. simply iconic soundtrack
The Harry Potter movies have pretty great soundtracks imo, I particularly like the soundtrack of the 3rd movie and "Lily's Theme" from Deathly Hallows (it's just sad and haunting). I think the composer is Alexandre someone
His score for the final movie is heart wrenching, despite my best efforts to keep in mind it isn't real, lol (Specifically when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are making their way across the school grounds though the battle.)
Ghibli music is just on another level. All of their soundtracks and films are so special and different, they make you feel like you're in another world.
Im curious to see what they think of the HTTYD soundtrack, because, like many others, I think that soundtrack is probably one of the greatest made ever.
Y'all should really hear the "How To Train Your Dragon" orchestral compositions by John Powell, they're absolutely amazing, and a very good series too, would recommend
Omg i was about to comment the same thing! It’s my favorite animated movie of all the time and the soundtracks, especially “Test Drive” and “Romantic Flight,” are just chef’s kiss
My dad is a concert pianist and music professor. He says that the soundtrack for Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back was what made him decide he wanted to be a musician
The only one I really disagreed with was Star Wars. I think people don't really realize how amazing of a job Williams did when composing for all those movies, it's kind of crazy how many tiny details are in the scores of each movie, and built into the themes. The shows all have amazing scores as well, regardless of whether the show is any good.
@@daniel15yearsago66 The original Star Wars score was ranked as the greatest film score of all time by the AFI in 2005, and is easily considered to be one of the most influential scores ever, in part because it helped to bring back the sweeping romantic scores of the 30s-50s that had kind of fallen by the wayside. It is definitely on the level of LOTR, especially since it serves as the base of all music in Star Wars that came after, including *8* more films by Williams himself. Even if you personally prefer LOTR (and nobody's going to argue with you if you consider LOTR to be the best), it simply cannot be denied.
Lets go for game sound tracks next time! MH series, celeste, a hat in time, portal series, crosscode, maplestory, many of jrpg series, ace attorney, to the moon, dragon's dogma, pokemon series, undertale, witcher3, zelda series, cuphead, ryu ga gotoku series, starcraft, elderscroll series, civilization series, earthbound series, crypt of the necrodancer, dragon quest series, dota2, stardew valley, sakunahime, nier series, va-11 hall-a etc...There are so much good soundtracks!! + Other guys suggested ori, hollow knight, FF series, chronotrigger, katanazero, kingdomhearts, fromsoft games. These are also must to go!
In "King's Speech", the Beethoven was used in several ways; it was a steady, slow rhythm that he could follow, it was psychologically steadying to him when he was speaking while stressed, and finally, when he delivers the entire speech, and the theme is allowed to develop the way Beethoven wrote it, it helps show the scope of what the King has just done.
Glad to see Lord of the Rings is automatically S tier because it’s just that good. Although, I was surprised not to see How to Train Your Dragon. I thought this was fun and I would love if you guys did more like it.
The Theory of Everything soundtrack was composed by the late Johann Johansson, specifically for the film. His superpower was that he was a real composer, who always wrote music that could stand on its own while still fitting the scene. Died far too early, and is sorely missed…
the loss of such a brilliant composer was so tragic. i remember being completely in awe of the arrival soundtrack and so excited to see what projects he would be part of next. he left the world too soon 💔
But the "Arrival of the birds" piece comes from a different soundtrack: "Les ailes pourpres: Le mystère des flamants" it was done by the The Cinematic Orchestra for a 2008 documentary on flamingos by Disney nature.
@@witchysongbird I hadn't known that, thanks! Please attribute this to my undying love of Johannsson's work; I cried for two days when I heard he'd died. The works that have been released since then have expanded his known contributions to music, which was always both simple and complex in a way that I still cannot describe. I was so happy to see him live on the Orphee tour though; one of the best concerts I've ever attended.
Yep- the theme song for the Theory of Everything is the Arrival of the Birds by the Cinematic Orchestra. It was written well before the film came out, and is one of my favourite pieces of all time. Definitely S tier!
I am not 100% sure but I think that this soundtrack was written for a Disney produced documentary about flamingos - „The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos” so that should be the movie taken under consideration in here. I definitely recommend listening to „Transformation” by The Cinematic Orchestra - it’s like a variation with some flare. ;)
This is one of my favourite pieces, too. :3 I haven't seen the movie, so I didn't even know that this one was used in it. XD (I think I came across the piece in a compilation of pieces at some point.)
For me, the award for most beautiful soundtrack moments goes to LOTR. However, the award for the soundtrack that best adapts to the various moments of its movie has to be Star Wars. Most action movies just blast the main title theme whenever the main character shows up or does anything remotely interesting. John Williams just weaves the character’s theme into whatever music he has already established for the scene. The Star Wars soundtrack tells the story of Star Wars, with all its emotional nuances, almost as well as the actual movies.
My personal favorite is the cello solo in episode 4 when Luke and Ben discover the wrecked Jawa transport and Luke rushes home. It perfectly captures Luke's frantic despiration in the moment.
Don't get me wrong, both are extremely solid. However, the lotr theme adapts and evolves even better to the story. Not only are the themes used to portray the thematic elements, but they also evolve with the plot. For example the theme for the fellowship becomes grander the more people join until it bursts into its complete form when the fellowship is fully assembled. Star wars has some good themes, however, at least in the later movies they have become more and more superficially used.
I saw Joe Hisaishi live at concert and he is amazing. It was studio Ghibli anniversary or something and when he played Nausicca I cried. He and Hans Zimmer are my two most fav composers for movie music
That concert is here in youtube... But I'm proud to have some Joe Hisaishi work that is not Ghibli, heck its 80ies pop style, like City pop yay! Robot Carnival ftw! 🙂
Yes yes yes! I was about to comment. I was in a live concert of Morricone and liked it a lot! I'm probably too old for this channel, I don't even know all the movies.
The Legend of 1900, L'estasi dell'oro, Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto, Allonsanfan (the theme is also in Inglorious Bastards), Once upon a time in America, etc..
For me princess mononoke should be at least as high as spirited away... It's Hisaishi going out of his usual piano led music and it's so memorable for that. It's incredibly subjective though - It's just my favorite myazaki movie and it definitely colors my appreciation of the soundtrack.
You missed two of the most beautiful (in my musically untrained opinion) soundtracks of all times: Finale from Dragonheart and That Next Place from Meet Joe Black
When they played Finale in the new Dragonheart movie, I honestly teared up a bit. Dragonheart has such a special place in my heart and hearing the theme from the first movie again during the end of a modern DragonHeart movie that I really enjoyed was a pleasant experience
Meet Joe Black was the first soundtrack I ever owned because it was so amazing and inspiring to me! Love the Everywhere Freesia and Fifth Ave tracks as well, but all so perfect! Will have to listen to Dragonheart now for sure.
For me, all of John Williams soundtracks are S tier. They are inseparable from the movies and super iconic. Also a big fan of LOTR soundtrack, I love how each movie has a different theme. Also love Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away! Old Disney is a favourite for sure, The Lion King has a great mix of songs but the actual orchestral soundtrack is beautiful too! I remember loving the "Under the stars" track so much!
The original Bond theme is from 1962, which then got slightly changed in most films to fit the shooting locations and the mood of the film. The best version is the "The Name's Bond... James Bond" by David Arnold played at the end of Casino Royale, which then was used for the following films, because none of the composers thought they could make it any better.
@@musical_lolu4811 One of the many reasons why the triology is a masterpiece is bec of the original soundtrack that is a masterpiece also. It fitted perfectly into a mold. The books -- JRR Tolkien -- masterpiece. Triology -- Peter Jackson -- masterpiece. The OST -- Howard Shore-- masterpiece.
I was glad to see that Morricone made your list (Cinema Paradiso)...if you do another assessment of soundtracks in the future I recommend also throwing Morricone's "The Mission" (Gabriel's Oboe) and "Once Upon a Time in the West" (main theme) into the mix. Thanks as always for the entertaining content.
I’m surprised How To Train Your Dragon isn’t on the list. John Powell composes some amazing scores including HTTYD, Ice Age, Kung Fu Panda and more. But I think HTTYD definitely deserves to be on the list, atleast for the sake of its scores being heard by other people.
For animated movies you should listen to the score and not the songs! "This land" by Hans ZImmer from the Lion King soundtrack is amazing in my humble non-classical musician opinion :D
I was thinking this too! It’s not an equivalent comparison with the songs vs actual orchestral score for the animated musicals. Frozen for example also has what I at least think are good scores outside of the songs (Heimr Arnadalr, Winter’s Waltz, and The Great Thaw are ones that stand out to me)
Yeah and on a similar note where there are soundtracks that use pre existing music (eg. The King's Speech using Beethoven here) you should listen to the music composed for the film as I find many scores are overlooked because everyone just thinks of that one song
Agreed! Shrek actually has some pretty epic original scoring, not just pop songs. Same with any of the other pieces from Ponyo, especially after rating all of the other Ghibli/Hisaishi works so high.
Completely agreed. Obviously, it's a comedy video so it doesn't "matter," but the rankings are meaningless when Lord of the Rings gets an auto S because "the whole thing is amazing" and Lion King gets reduced down to "Circle of Life" and Titanic to "My Heart Will Go On." Both movies have amazing hour+ long scores. The Lion King score is absolutely some of Hans Zimmer's best work ("This Land", "Stampede", "Under the Stars", etc), and Titanic's whole schtick is being "all borderline cheesy" music for the first half so it can absolutely crush you with its sinking ship score in the second half ("Hard to Starboard", "Death of Titanic").
2001: A Space Odyssey is known for the Richard Strauss "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and the Johann Strauss "On The Beautiful Blue Danube", but the Khachaturian and Ligeti music in the movie is really phenomenal.
I think those classic pieces were supposed to be temporary fillers but Kubrik liked them so much with the movie he left them there. One important thing to remember about the Zarathustra work is that there are 9 sections and this first one is called "Dawn" (of man).
Dario Marianelli is a great composer…loved his Pride and Prejudice work. As an overall soundtrack that selected great classical pieces, Master and Commander On the Far Side of the World is beautiful.
I saw all 3 LOTR films in NY for the first time they ever played all 3 movies together with a symphony. Howard Shore was there and it was conducted by Ludwig Wicki and I had the opportunity to meet them both!!! It was incredible!
They really messed up those John Williams soundtracks. Harry Potter is an S for sure. Jaws is Sooo Iconic. If not THE most recognizable soundtrack ever written at D tier....huh? Also, E.T. is definitely S as well.
‘Your hands are cold’ always gives me chills. How they made like 2 mins of Mr Darcy doing nothing but walking towards the camera so emotional is genuinely impressive.
I 100% agree. I was seriously taken aback when they immediately put it in D lol, but I understand their specific nit picks. I wish they had said something about the main leitmotif.
As a die hard Interstellar fan, I loved seeing it in the S-tier. Hans Zimmer is absolutely incredible, similar with what he did to Inception. Much love
I don't understand it. Hans Zimmer has created some absolutely wonderful works. Interstellar is just very basic organ playing increasing in tempo and volume. He is playing like 3 notes accompanied by loops of other instruments. No, I don't get it.
@@gjrfytn It's not that impressive, though. You can literally do it with anything that moves up the scale while increasing the volume and adding more instrumental loops. It's the most basic thing you can come up with. I am not saying that to change your feelings about it, just to reiterate that it's so much less effort than that Let it Go overrated song (which I dislike to begin with). If we are judging it musically, Interstellar should rank below Frozen.
THE LOTR AUTO SORT I LOVE IT Makes me wanna rewatch these but have you heard Prince of Egypts Soundtrack!?!?? FLAWLESS. How to train your dragon!? Amazing LOL
I'd be interested to know if Brett and Eddy ever watched all the behind the scenes documentaries that were included with the Director's Cut dvd collection. Because the sections focusing on the music production were quite informative. And yes, they did seem to be possessed, somewhat. (I think everyone involved in that movie was, kind of. What they went through to get all that done...🤯) Also, interesting fact: after work was done on the LotR trilogy, Howard Shore was so devoted to the music, lore, and world of Middle Earth, that he basically made up an excuse to keep working with it. He created this Symphony concert that compressed the musical world of Middle Earth into a two (three?) hour production, and started conducting performances all over the world.
You'd have to be possessed to keep filming despite getting your foot severely hurt *cough cough Aragorn kicking a helmet in two towers cough cough* but seriously, I love watching the commentaries about the whole production, let alone the music/score!
@@deviantworld1507 I like to say that Hollywood directors probably curse Peter Jackson's name. Used to be you could film some little 30 minute thing and call it good, then Peter comes along and says, "Nah, I'm aiming for 18+ hours of materiel." 😵💫
For Lion King, I definitely think it should be higher up for that one soundtrack where Simba has the vision of his father reminding him who he is. The music swells so much and the amount of emotion is just insane.
boys! super excited about the project you keep hinting at--i think you've been great at building up the tension and keeping us on our toes! can't wait to see what you have in store :) (and hard agree about the LOTR score. everything on it is SO GOOD!)
Star Wars should be S tier. The amount of motifs and themes used through out the original triligy and prequel triligy alone is astounding. It would also be cool to seem them rank individual pieces from the films too.
Funny that they used the Prequel poster art and as much as I LOVE Duel of the Fates the rip-off of Dvorak’s New World Symphony is pretty obvious. Still magnificent.
They did a video on movie music that was blatantly copied from classical composers. Almost whole video is full of Williams work, with evidence on how he stole his music from Stravinsky, Holst, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák... Watch it. No dear, it is not an S.
I agree on most rankings (glad you included "theory of everything" and that high! never thought it would be in here). I think you could easily make a part 2, movies that I got in mind are some iconic DC and Marvel movies (Joker, Batman Begins, Black Panther), Prince of Egypt, How to Train Your Dragon, Django, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Little Women, Whiplash...
Oh- the Prince of Egypt soundtrack is one of my favorites in the Dreamworks industry. I would love for them to react to it (I'm using a translator, sorry if there's something wrong)
I think you treated the Bond theme a little unfairly there. It later evolves into the whole bigband arrangement, which is obviously alot more engaging than just the guitar riff at the beginning. Also, compared to something like Up or Twilight, it is *way* more memorable, because it is a really strong riff/theme. It is instantly recognisable and sets the mood quite well, again, especially once the bigband hits.
There’s also a ton of Bond themes which they get really good later on… but I suppose that one is iconic. Works though. I’m a fan of the Scottish(?) orchestra playing it.
Also, I wish they had reviewed more Marvel themes (maybe a bit biased) because The Avengers OG theme is a classic but isn’t as good as the newer ones such as in Endgame.
@@dothmotherknowyouwearth Also, "it sounds very classic 90s." Uh...yeah John Barry composed the James Bond Theme in the 60s. The only thing that might be 90s about it is that it was sort of iterated and adapted for newer films as time went on. Anyway, yeah, big anti-well-known-tunes vibes with these reviews. John Barry was quite an iconic film scorer though. I personally like his jazzier stuff, like The Ipcress File, but for more orchestral scoring maybe check out Out Of Africa or Mary Queen of Scots (particularly violin focused). Sorry but ranking twilight better than him seemed like a huge wtf moment. haha
@@Mi5terMarc Yeah, generally a mindset of “popular = overrated.” I also fall under that mindset at times, I suppose. (Lmao also sorry if I also add a huge paragraph to this comment section.) But still, there’s a reason why it got popular and maybe they should investigate a bit deeper. I love the rest of the Bond soundtracks from the earlier movies because they have a very nice sound to them. I wish they had at least given it a bit of a chance. It seemed just weird why Twilight was above it. Sure, there’s a component of “does it work by itself?” But if it’s popular (and Twilight’s soundtrack is not from what I’ve seen) it likely works by itself at least a bit. I just don’t know how Twilight’s soundtrack is higher up? Even if, say, the Avengers is not the best musically, it’s still iconic and gives the iconic feeling of action, but Twilight is just… sounds to me. Once again, I’m very biased since I love Bond and Marvel and am not a fan of romance or vampires.
Pan (2003) has amazing themes. It’s underrated, but listening to it instils every emotion you should feel at the time of the movie especially “Flying.” “Define Dancing” from Wall-E is amazing as well. Let’s not skip over the fact that “King of Pride Rock” is better than “The Circle of Life” either and that Prince of Egypt is Hans Zimmer’s best work.
I love how you guys appreciate the studio ghilbi soundtracks as much as I do, I first stumbled upon Spirited Away's soundtrack and it got me crying for no reason 😭 just so beautiful, and Howl's Moving Castle really makes you feel like you live in a castle lol!
I really would have liked to know your thoughts on the Dune soundtrack. It's so far from traditional "western" orchestral music, but it fits the scenery soo well. Part 2?:)
I'd rate the Dune soundtrack as S-tier. The textures and sounds that Hans Zimmer and his team created with the film sound design team are just fantastic and truly iconic. Denis Villeneuve really brought the best out of everyone in the crafts category. All their Oscar wins were so well deserved. Just too bad Villeneuve didn't get nominated, he really should have been nominated when all of the craft teams did such a great job bringing his vision to life!!!
Appreciation for Editor-san: I love the use of Haydn's second Trumpet concerto at 12:10-12:25. It's one of my favorite pieces to play and listen to, always gives me the feels.
Um...I believe Haydn only wrote one Trumpet Concerto. Johann Nepomuk Hummel wrote one a bit later also. As a Trumpet player myself, I have learned to play both. They are milestone pieces for the instrument.
@@graydonnolen6454 I had a feeling that's what you meant lol. No worries. They also finished the video with the 3rd movement playing in the background.
so glad to see Theory of Everything there. its one of my favourite scores and objectively is criminally underrated. the loss of Johann Johannsson was so sad for the world of film music... and beyond. the fact you put star wars only on A and put LOTR above it broke my heart tho :')
You should listen to his album Orpheé! Specifically Flight from the City, it’s the most beautiful minimalistic piece I’ve ever heard. 6 minutes go by so fast when I listen to it
@@bookwormd8627 yes, I have! I can relate to that completely. his collaborations with Hildur Guonadottir on that album are gorgeous. Zurich from another album of his puts me in another world
I think I would personally just rank one soundtrack higher and that's definitely Your Name for me. I agree the piano is repetitive in the beginning but I think especially the beginning of the song is more focused on the singing. To me it just perfectly fits the mood of the movie and the piano in the beginning just does all it needs to do and that's to support the emotions created by the movie. Also the song has more orchestral parts later on and for me personally it just has the perfect balance between focusing more on the singer and slowly integrating a full orchestra. So at least for this movie I wouldn't know what other film music I could ask for because whenever I listen to it I feel the emotions of the movie again :). I'm up for other opinions on this though.
I feel like you should have given Ponyo another listen. It actually has a really good soundtrack, the song you listened to is the only one that sounds like a kid.
Agreed, Ponyo (and honestly most of Joe Hisaishi's sound tracks) are at least A ranking. The problem with these rankings is that they are based on one track, and the Ponyo one is by far the worst one on that soundtrack. Mother of the Sea would be a better one to listen to. But at the end of the day, this is just a fun video
@@davidbrussard-composer7372 wait Joe Hisaishi did Ponyo? Didn't realize. I guess I figured he retired by then. Explains why I like Ponyo's soundtrack as well.
I really like the main theme and the love theme of Cinema Paradiso, one of the greatest film themes by Ennio Morricone and very Pleasurable to hear whether it is by Orchestra or by any other arrangement. I really liked Ma Youyou and Chris Botti's interpretation of this piece of music, and although the jazz part is quite unorthodox and I didn't like it at first, but when the Orchestra joined in with the cello during the love theme at the end, it really is heaven to my ears! Really agree with Lord of the Rings being S tier because of its quality. Howard Shore really is a musical genius! Some of its theme songs, such as "May it Be" also take the movie to the absolute top tier. All in all, great video!
I was a bit disappointed that Ennio Morricone got only one entry, and they rated it only B. To me, Ennio is an S tier, compared to John Williams and Hans Zimmer, who are A tier, Morricone is a much more refined and original composer.
Absolutely agree, never knew that they had such low standards, Ennio Morricone is the greatest composer in the cinematic world for sure. They seem to judge like a bunch of kids that watch anime all day and listen to radical chic music
I almost rioted over Morricone erasure until I saw Cinema Paradiso. But you still should have ranked “The Mission” because what it did was phenomenal. The soundtrack (baroque music with indigenous American influence) replicates the theme of the movie
Best line - “10% Cannon in D vibes” 😂 Soooo relatable. here comes the story, So, my sister and I (and a friend) all went to go play for our local nursing home during Christmas to spread to joy. It was a whole lot of fun. BUT, when my mom was picking out the pieces for us to play, she decided to pick literal CANNON IN D. AND OH THE GROANS when we heard about this. I just think it is a mutual understanding among fellow musicians that Cannon in D is just…no. It may sound pretty and all but no. Anyway thanks for reading this very long story. :)
Maybe I'm just driven by my childhood memories and feelings but i think Lion King is one of the best works of Hans Zimmer. It is epic, it is catchy, it incorporates african folk vibes quite well, you cannot not love it. I listen to that soundtrack very often even nowadays.
Star Wars not being in S confuses me when it has some of the best and most iconic soundtrack of any movie series that exists today. It's on the same level as LOTR for me.
Fun fact: He's a Pirate is the most played/listened to song of Pirates of the Caribbean, but it wasn't actually the theme song at first. It just become the most iconic piece
Ennio Morricone’s works don’t get played enough, and even rarer for Australian orchestras. I guess the lack of exposure is partly why they skipped over. S-A tier for sure
I know we have diff tastes, but LaLaLand would be S tier for me. The song they played is the theme, and it’s super nice, but the entire soundtrack, w the other songs, are so top tier for me. Especially, when you see how it fits the movie, it gets my nostalgia going. Interstellar I love soooo much as well, and I agree! S tierrrrrr 💜
The end credits song for Ponyo (the one shown in this video) is so lame but the actual score by Joe Hisaishi is actually pretty freaking epic. The opening scene alone has amazing music.
All of John Powell's scores are weirdly really good. How To Train Your Dragon is his most iconic suite, but all of his scores have a strong personality. I'd love to see you guys do video game music, but only on the condition that Gareth Coker's Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps soundtrack is included since nobody talks about it. (Highlights of the first game include "Inspiriting," "Restoring the Light, Facing the Dark," "Escaping the Ruins," and "Light of Nibel." Highlights of the second game include "Main Theme," "Howl," "Baur's Reach," "The Windswept Wastes," "The Spirit Willow," "A Stirring of Memories," and "Ori, Embracing the Light.") It's good to listen to the songs together since the leitmotif game in these scores is strong.
Sideways does a good breakdown about the soundtrack of Shrek. You’ll notice that Gregson-Williams’s score kicks in for the important hero moments, but the pop music is used when characters are fulfilling other people’s perceptions or expectations.
the fact that they had "arrival of the birds" (4:50) high up in their list is so very cute to me bec i love it so much it's so beautiful and very underrated imo so glad they liked it too!!
sorry to reply to such an old comment, but this song is originally from Seijun Suzuki's Yumeji, a very surreal portrait of painter and poet Takehisa Yumeji.
I absolutely LOVE tracks from movies. The thing is, for example in Harry Potter, there are SO many melodies and they are VERY different from each other, especially because there are so many composers that participated in the making of the soundtracks. Also, in my opinion, music from Inception and Jurassic Park deserves to be higher, but most of all, Schindler's list should to be in S tier, because in context of the movie, it just makes you cry and it is very touching (I've heard it live 2 times, and it made me tear up)
Kimi no nawa has one of my favourite soundtracks in anime movies ever, maybe the song you chose isn't the best but still they fit so well with the movie. I know you were judging it based on the musical composition but it still hurt my heart a little bit when you put it so low, its been years since the anime came out and i still listen to the soundtrack hahah
Yeah, same man. Every single track in the movie is super memorable and fits perfectly with how it's used. The way Zenzenznese starts playing at the end of the first act like an opening theme kicked my ass the first time I saw it.
Take a listen to John Powell’s How to Train Your Dragon - gorgeous orchestrations, amazing storytelling (even without dialogue), and just a terrific piece of music.
It wouldn't fit into this list. It's just beyond S Tier.
Yes, absolutely!! I was waiting for them to listen to it, a bit disappointed it wasn't on the list

LITERALLY SAME HAHAHAAHA. Lotr def deserves it 😍😍😍😍
I love most of Hans Zimmers stuff and John Williams. But what Howard Shore did in LOTR is probably the greatest movie music ever written.
Thomas Newman?
Ennio Morricone?

Them arriving to LOTR and just being like "Oh yeah, just, just up there, no need to even listen to it" makes me VERY happy. My favorite movie soundtrack ever.

Absolutely! Part of me was worried that they might hold it to a lower standard. I was pleased to see their reaction.
A classic...reminds me of Parsifal prelude
Fuck it, hands down the best movie series ever for all time
I got the violin notes for it and am pretty disappointed.
The lord of the rings music is actually insane. 11 hours of pure bliss witch perfectly captures and elevates the story
Also he heavily copied Mozart's Requiem.
Plus the "Marry Me" Suite is amazing❤😭

As an amateur Tolkien nerd, it is fitting that the LOTR movies have incredible music considering that in the Silmarillion, the entire world is created through an act of music.
Although I could never get past the first few chapters of that book, the creation narrative is only second to the one in Narnia imo. Masterfully told.
moral of the silmarillion: never trust an off-key singer
@@MusicalJackknife You're right, I totally misread that. Anyhow, the rest was directed to your previous statement.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy how you can tell the audience that the villain is coming in just two notes, they should really consider that
Yeah, they barely listened to the songs.
Yeah if we're talking about the soundtracks within the context of the movie, 2001 is certainly S tier.
to be fair, the jaws soundtrack is just a less good version of dvorak's 9th symphony. low effort and sad.

Its not on the level of lord of the rings though for example
he literally just remixed the planets for the entire score

I am not 100% sure but I think that this soundtrack was written for a Disney produced documentary about flamingos - „The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos” so that should be the movie taken under consideration in here. I definitely recommend listening to „Transformation” by The Cinematic Orchestra - it’s like a variation with some flare. ;)

YASS, I heard this piece in an edit with epic movies and it made my sob immediately😭❤️
Yes! Before I started watching I listed the scores that I think would be in S. And Star Wars came to my mind even before Pirates and LOTR
Yes!
My personal favorite is the cello solo in episode 4 when Luke and Ben discover the wrecked Jawa transport and Luke rushes home. It perfectly captures Luke's frantic despiration in the moment.
You mean the cello solo on the Force Theme that gets reused for the moment Rey catches the lightsaber in Episode VII? That’s one of my favorites too.

Pixar scores beat new Disney scores hands down. Michael Giacchino's The Incredibles and Ratatouille soundtracks are definitely A+ tier.
Nice to see how quick they were to rank Lord of the Rings in S category. LOTR is GOAT.❤❤

@@hellegennes In the end, it's more about how effective a piece is for the listener than the effort. Otherwise minimalism couldn't even exist
Agree 💯
And stampede, it gives me chills every time.
And the part Mufasa is dead and Simba tries to wake him!!!

TBH Eddy's Bella impression is actually spot on 3:34
boys! super excited about the project you keep hinting at--i think you've been great at building up the tension and keeping us on our toes! can't wait to see what you have in store :)
(and hard agree about the LOTR score. everything on it is SO GOOD!)
I like "Goodnight Sweet Possums" by John Powell. It's like a lullaby he did for Ice Age, it helps me to fall asleep
Star Wars should be S tier. The amount of motifs and themes used through out the original triligy and prequel triligy alone is astounding. It would also be cool to seem them rank individual pieces from the films too.
This would be cool. Take a few movies or television series and rank like 5 or ten pieces per franchise.
100%, and Jurassic Park too!
Funny that they used the Prequel poster art and as much as I LOVE Duel of the Fates the rip-off of Dvorak’s New World Symphony is pretty obvious. Still magnificent.
@@harukanoe is duel of the fates a rip off of Dvorak? I’ve listened to both lots of times and never picked up on it.
I would love for them to react to it
(I'm using a translator, sorry if there's something wrong)
I was really hoping those would be in the vid as well. Also the Cruella movie soundtrack would've been interesting to see their takes
Joker has one of my favourite soundtracks. Just listening to it brings back all the despair and depression that the movie brought to me. In a good way
Yes please 💖
Test Drive by John Powell is easy S tier
I think you treated the Bond theme a little unfairly there. It later evolves into the whole bigband arrangement, which is obviously alot more engaging than just the guitar riff at the beginning. Also, compared to something like Up or Twilight, it is *way* more memorable, because it is a really strong riff/theme. It is instantly recognisable and sets the mood quite well, again, especially once the bigband hits.
There’s also a ton of Bond themes which they get really good later on… but I suppose that one is iconic.
Works though. I’m a fan of the Scottish(?) orchestra playing it.
Yeah these ratings hurt me inside.
Sorry but ranking twilight better than him seemed like a huge wtf moment. haha
@@Mi5terMarc
Yeah, generally a mindset of “popular = overrated.” I also fall under that mindset at times, I suppose.
(Lmao also sorry if I also add a huge paragraph to this comment section.)
But still, there’s a reason why it got popular and maybe they should investigate a bit deeper.
I feel like if they had reacted to some of the more orchestral parts of the Shinkai soundtracks, they'd have rated it higher.
I felt the same. I got so emotional with the Orchestra Concert of Kimi No Nawa.
Yo Brett and Eddy should listen to Pride and Prejudice’s soundtracks. They’re beyond beautiful!
Pan (2003) has amazing themes. It’s underrated, but listening to it instils every emotion you should feel at the time of the movie especially “Flying.”
“Define Dancing” from Wall-E is amazing as well. Let’s not skip over the fact that “King of Pride Rock” is better than “The Circle of Life” either and that Prince of Egypt is Hans Zimmer’s best work.
Agree with Kong of pride disagree with Prince of Egypt but that’s is totally fine.
For The Lion King, you guys should have listened to "This Land," as I think it's much more representative of the soundtrack than the opening number.
Yes!! One of Zimmer best works
Part 2?:)
YEEESSSSS Hans did amazing with immersing you into the Dune world
I'd rate the Dune soundtrack as S-tier.
Appreciation for Editor-san:
I love the use of Haydn's second Trumpet concerto at 12:10-12:25.
@@TheRichNewnes You are completely right. I meant the second movement of Haydn' s trumpet concerto thanks for correcting me.
@@graydonnolen6454 I had a feeling that's what you meant lol. No worries. They also finished the video with the 3rd movement playing in the background.
@@TheRichNewnes Oh very cool, I missed that.
so glad to see Theory of Everything there. its one of my favourite scores and objectively is criminally underrated. the loss of Johann Johannsson was so sad for the world of film music... and beyond. the fact you put star wars only on A and put LOTR above it broke my heart tho :')
Agree. That said, the song they played wasn't composed for the film. It was a previous piece for a documentary.
the theory of everything is my fav movie as well :) The music is spectacular
Honestly agree with your assessment of Disney music 😅
I feel like you should have given Ponyo another listen. It actually has a really good soundtrack, the song you listened to is the only one that sounds like a kid.
Agreed, Ponyo (and honestly most of Joe Hisaishi's sound tracks) are at least A ranking. The problem with these rankings is that they are based on one track, and the Ponyo one is by far the worst one on that soundtrack. Mother of the Sea would be a better one to listen to. But at the end of the day, this is just a fun video
Also agree. The same thing could happen to the Totoro soundtrack if you just listen to "Hey, let's go".
@@davidbrussard-composer7372 wait Joe Hisaishi did Ponyo? Didn't realize. I guess I figured he retired by then. Explains why I like Ponyo's soundtrack as well.
Joe Hisaishi is great. From Kikujiro's soundtrack, "Summer" and " The Rain", are some of my favorites.
@@chris-hayes yea Joe hisashi is a fucking genius. They make studio Ghibli just as much as the animations. Without Joe hisashi, it's not a Ghibli film
Best line - “10% Cannon in D vibes” 😂
Soooo relatable. here comes the story,
So, my sister and I (and a friend) all went to go play for our local nursing home during Christmas to spread to joy.
Mononoke Hime in A Rank is sacreligious! The very first song "The Legend of Ashitaka" is the world's biggest S tier piece (QvQ)

Nice vid! If you haven‘t seen How To Train Your Dragon, go watch it. John Powell went absolute god mode with the soundtrack. Like, all of it
Just saw Charles Cornell's analysis of it!
The way the themes are overlapping in different contexts and tell the story where words never could, is absolute genius.
Sad to see “cinema paradiso” so low😭😭😭 you should definitely check out more of morricone works!
Ennio Morricone’s works don’t get played enough, and even rarer for Australian orchestras. I guess the lack of exposure is partly why they skipped over. S-A tier for sure
They would adore Morricone's Mission.
The rest of the ponyo soundtrack is incredible. The end credit’s song is cute, but isn’t a masterpiece by any means
Cinema Paradiso only being B-Tier is an absolute tragedy.
Star Wars and LOTR are my favorites. Theme development and orchestration are just superb.
Then you should listen Dvorak😉
@@evasaari838 I have, superb as well 👍
All of John Powell's scores are weirdly really good.
Schindler’s List at A is a crime, it’s S tier for sure
Sideways does a good breakdown about the soundtrack of Shrek. You’ll notice that Gregson-Williams’s score kicks in for the important hero moments, but the pop music is used when characters are fulfilling other people’s perceptions or expectations.
I love that they didn't even question LOTR.
Everyone knows it goes in S tier
the fact that they had "arrival of the birds" (4:50) high up in their list is so very cute to me bec i love it so much it's so beautiful and very underrated imo so glad they liked it too!!
I’d say the score for Dune 2021 is really quite epic in a unique way too; lots of textures and layers :)
Absolutely!
Totally agree!
Also one of my favourite movie soundtracks is "In the Mood for Love: Yumeji’s Theme" by Shigeru Umebayashi, it's so beautiful.
sorry to reply to such an old comment, but this song is originally from Seijun Suzuki's Yumeji, a very surreal portrait of painter and poet Takehisa Yumeji.
i have yet to watch the vid but I really hope they included the httyd soundtrack that score was gas
I absolutely LOVE tracks from movies. The thing is, for example in Harry Potter, there are SO many melodies and they are VERY different from each other, especially because there are so many composers that participated in the making of the soundtracks.
Also, in my opinion, music from Inception and Jurassic Park deserves to be higher, but most of all, Schindler's list should to be in S tier, because in context of the movie, it just makes you cry and it is very touching (I've heard it live 2 times, and it made me tear up)
I was waiting for this man, the best part of a movie is always the soundtrack
Kimi no nawa has one of my favourite soundtracks in anime movies ever, maybe the song you chose isn't the best but still they fit so well with the movie. I know you were judging it based on the musical composition but it still hurt my heart a little bit when you put it so low, its been years since the anime came out and i still listen to the soundtrack hahah
But finally the Sparkle vs. Grand Escape debate has been settled😂
Idk if classical nerds like rock songs. Al I know is zenzenzense slaps. When that anime played that song I was dancing like: Kimi no zenzenzen...
@@energeticstunts993 Zenzenzense has that killer guitar, I can never get enough of it
Yeah, same man. Every single track in the movie is super memorable and fits perfectly with how it's used. The way Zenzenznese starts playing at the end of the first act like an opening theme kicked my ass the first time I saw it.
