When stealing 3rd if the batter is right handed can certainly help as well. Although the pitcher might fall asleep even more if the runner is slower and there’s a lefty in the box. Great video as always!!!
Albert Pujol's MLB The Show 21 card should have 0 speed but 99 steal rating
🤣🤣
There's also the fact that the 2B is pretty far off the bag so a longer lead isn't as risky.
I was slow as hell in HS. And middle school. And still am slow at 35. Can confirm that you can steal third when slower then a drunk penguin.
Pujols did this quite a bit in St. Louis. Of course, he was younger and healthier back then, but he was never a guy known for his speed.
Well I pitched in highschool and did the same during my youth years and I was fortunate to play for coaches that played pro or college when I was playing travel baseball. So my knowledge is rich in learning from them but your right the only way that he could have stolen third is that the pitcher didn't pay attention to him. But your right when there are runners on base they are taught to read that pitcher in what his tendencies are. But there are some pitcher's that are very deliberate to the plate when delivering the baseball. So I think your right he never looked at the runner at second and that's how he was able to steal third
During game five of the 2015 NLDS, Daniel Murphy was at first and moved to second on a walk. The Dodgers had a shift on at the time and left third base unprotected. Murphy went from second to third and later scored.
Hey Matt can you do a video on player’s thoughts on extra inning games? Like the ones that go 12-15 or more innings. Thanks!
He definitely timed up the pitcher because despite not having prolific speed, he stole 3rd without running at his own top speed. Literally looks like he dogged it a bit to 3rd. Pujols is a smart base runner. Migel Cabrera is another slower player who can get into scoring position or even score from 2nd on a weak single because he is smart. Smarts in base running will always trump speed. Great coaching video again, Matt. The thing that stands out to me is the scores of kids you coach up correctly and who will benefit from it in high school, college, and perhaps later and if lucky enough, the pros.,
What do you do if the pitcher lifts his leg and then turns over to second? Should you start running at peak leg lift and just shuffle before that?
A good 3rd base coach is allso a huge asset in a play like this!!!
Matt; I always looked for lazy arched throws from catchers to the pitcher (especially in amateur ball) and third basemen positioning. Did it once in the minors and lets just say I was a future target. (Won't name the team. LOL)
Waiting For Episode 09 Road To 90MPH Love From India 🇮🇳 Chhattisgarh State ❤️⚾
That is smart. Never thought of it like that. Maybe the red sox saw this video before extra innings and cora wanted to try it out today lol
You need 1mill your such a good youtuber keep up the vids ima keep using your advice
Tips/Workouts for kids (12-13-14 yrs old) wanting to improve velocity and arm strength?
Despite fans whining about his injury-related slowness, Albert is such an underrated base runner. He pulled this move off perhaps half a dozen times as an Angel. I don't think he has been caught stealing in years.
Just checked, he stole 3rd Six times as an Angel. Not bad for a guy with Plantar Fasciitis, multiple knee surgeries, back issues, and numerous other issues.
Looks like there is a shift on in this clip. Which makes sense with Puljos and his wheels stealing third lol
for real the 3b was 40 feet off 3rd base.
Pujols is literally the slowest MLB player. Incredible.
What do you think about the third baseman being 35-40 feet off the bag? Probably had something to do with it.
Great insight Matt thank you! Did you get to steal bags in the MLB with the Padres or Orioles?
Didn’t get on base enough to steal! Lol
Love that! Brilliant!
Also if your third base coach plays with signs as pitcher turns head from second to home as well as first base coaches for lefties
Yo Matt, are you going to talk about
the Bauer situation?
Love this! I'm going to let my 12-year-old son watch it, this should benefit young players who pitch in two ways, one for the obvious base running skills, but also to learn what not to do as a pitcher. Get it in those same habits are routines. Always mix it up with base runners on
I teach this to my high school freshman and they love stealing 3rd. They can't believe how easy it is.
What was the score, the inning and the outs during this example?
Nvm. I found out that the Angels were down 4 in the 7th with one out. I don't agree with the alignment in the infield. I think 1B should be playing closer to the bag(and so should 3rd) so they can be in better position for a double play.
I always get a kick out of seeing slow players steal a base.
I had one earlier no looks first pitch while I was at second and I fucked up and didn’t get a good jump so I didn’t go
Matt, how do you coach your pitchers to avoid steals like this? Just tell them to mix up their patterns and tempos?
Yup and make the runner stop his feet before you pitch. We mix in inside moves and times picks also
I pulled off a similar thing by stealing 2nd yesterday. I'm the slowest player on the team, but I was halfway to second when he let go of the ball
Are most of the coaches of the teams your teams compete against this well versed in baseball I.Q.?
Does the distance between the 3rd baseman and 3rd base also play a role? Or is it all on the pitcher?
it doesn't, 2nd basemen usually play like probably 20-30 feet off the base (estimate).
@@gopher6532 ah, ok, cool. I was just curious. Thank you. 😁👍
Good when it works, bad when it doesnt not fullproof, padres have gotten caught a couple times trying to do this, but they have also used this technique to steal alot of bases.
Sometimes you do get caught with an inside move or perfectly timed pick
@@AntonelliBaseball Yea or randomly the pitcher decides to change up his pattern or tendencies. Why its important for pitchers to be hyperaware of things like that, they can use it to their advantage too.
Can I do this at first base?
I heard it's easier to steal 2nd than 3rd idk just what I've heard from a long time.
not a baseball player here.
why is it harder to steal second? why is it easier to steal third? it seems like second is a farther throw by the catcher, and 1st base is more out of the pitchers sight. thanks!
it really isn't pitchers always check 1st base but sometimes don't care about 2nd base.
🔥
You couldn’t find a shot of Pablo Sandoval stealing 3rd?😅
Molina just stole 3rd against the pirates like last week. 3rd basemen playing off the bag.
And in the video the runner wasn't even being held on at first so the pitcher clearly didn't care if the runners stole
You don’t hold the runner at 1B with a runner at 2nd
After reading the title, Pablo Sandoval enters the chat
Looks like the batter walked here anyway. No steal.
It was actually a 1-1 count
Softball players having to wait for the pitcher to release the ball
Had first game today and had 5 steals in two. I’m a slow ass mf tho
Legend has it Michael Jordan was a better baseball player than Matt Antonelli LOL
Legend also has it that I was a better basketball player
so... why don't more guys steal 3rd?
It is not easy as it sounds
Never said it was easy, just telling you how it can be easier. If a pitcher doesn’t fall into any of these patterns it is tough to do
You're not a pro unless you steal home. Thats my favorite base to see stolen.
This is more terrible pitching than good base running. He took off before that front foot even moved and the pitcher never even flinched.

Wow. Your medal is in the mail
@@Jackmerius_Tacktheritrix5733 lol imagine taking the time to leave hate comments
Not in me! When I played catcher in high school I threw out at least 90% of the people that tried to steal 3rd on me.
That just means your competition was 💩
@@GrabOnede I played in Florida one of the top states with talent. My senior year (2010) we were #2 in the state. We lost the state championship to a school from Miami. A lot of the people we faced went D1 or are in the minor leagues now. Definitely no lack of talent. I threw out A LOT of runners going to 3rd and a good amount going to second. Throwing to 3rd is a shorter throw.
Hey matt! how was your day
