If you start moving down the line like that during a play in that area, you can be getting your runner called out. It's in the rules you can't run along the basepath as a coach, it is confusing to the defense to see movement there.
I am a coach that is trying to get better...do you practice moving around in the coaches box or anything else to make yourself better? It is not second nature yet to me to move around in the box and my coaches didn't do it much growing up. I love the idea but want to know how to get good at it.
You actually stay in the coaching box? I never did. Never knew why they wasted chalk to even draw it. I've yet to read a rule that says the coach needs to be in it. Never seen an umpire tell a coach to be there. And it doesn't protect the coach from interference calls.
I've always looked at it as a suggestion for the coach. I've never seen an umpire "enforce" it. Like you said, I can't see any coach staying in it for the whole game, at least not any 3rd base coach worth his weight. Even though he sort of talked how he works in the box, I think if you asked him straight up about it, he would tell you he doesn't stay in it either.
Even while demonstrating what they do "in" the coaches box they don't actually stay in the box, you are focusing more on the title rather than what they are actually saying.
I was coaching 3rd few weeks ago and overthrow hit my foot and went in the dougout. Umpire call interference on me for not being in the imaginary box....terrible call
As a new coach, this is great stuff

I'm trying to be a better coach and you've helped a lot
Where do we find those other base running videos?

Have to be in it prior to each pitch. Other then that there is no such thing as a coach's box
