SEVEN YEARS OF OS UPDATES.....
🔥🔥🔥
now that is awesome...worth buying
That's good, but will the hardware last that long?
@@kidgoku712they partnered with IFixedIt to make the pixel 8 more repairable and now there are official guides and parts to change the screen, battery and cameras. So it's great

5 years of OS is enough
7 years of Updates is impressive. Almost as impressive as Google NOT DISCONTINUING the Pixel within 7 years...
Lmao, can’t wait to see them announce killing this software updates support in 5 yrs from now.
@@TwistedShrapnelwell 5 years is also great imo
Why would they be discontinue the Pixels in 7 years? This is literally the 8th generation of Pixel phones. If they were going to discontinue them they would would have years ago

Thank you for being the one reviewer to actually show and compare the front screens btwn the 8 pro and the 7 pro
Right? I didn't realize the 8 Pro had symmetrical bezels until I watched this video. I know it's a small detail, but for me symmetrical bezels add a little bit oomph to the overall design of a phone. It's almost as if the designers really wished to leave no detail untouched, which is great considering we're talking about a $1000 phone.
I’ve watched several first impressions/first looks and this is by far the most informative and detailed. Great work Dave! I learned much more from you and I greatly appreciate it! 🎉
What separates him from the rest?
So many more important details in this review versus others and actual context to previous devices. Great job
Thank you for listing the prices in sane numbers ($1000 instead of $999)! I wish all reviewers did that.

You've summed up things really well on this on, Dave. Good on ya!
Loved your infographic video dave!
I know this was an early thoughts video, but I do see this Pixel 8 Pro as an upgrade. I'm coming from a Pixel 6 Pro. When I bought the unlocked phone from the Google store, I traded in my Pixel 5. I compare the price of the 6 Pro to this year's bundled deal from Google for a new phone with significant features + a free Pixel 2 watch. But time will tell if that's true once independent reviews come in. I'm excited. Great video.
I also have a 6pro, remove the free watch or probuds from the equation and what makes the phone itself worth upgrading? The phone is still gonna run warm given they're using the same Samsung foundries
$1000 - not significant upgrade despite the trinkets thrown in
@@AMakki7491 Wow, almost an upset response. It's still a nice upgrade. New phone, and some new "trinkets" and I didn't pay anything outlandish from what I paid for in relation to the Pixel 6 Pro on launch. SO in my eyes, I deem it a worthwhile purchase. I won't know until I get my hands on the phone and take it through normal usage. But I know I'll get great usage from the 8 Pro and watch.
Using the Pixel 6 Pro as we speak and I pre-ordered 8 Pro with the Pixel Watch 2.
When I go to pre order the watch is not free though? You hey 400aud Google store credit instead and the etch costs 550 something or 600 something for the lte version
Great review! Also your hair looks so good like that!! Been a fan of yours for years.
omg you come off so authentic and unrehearsed in a good way - I really really appreciate how approachable it makes you!!
Love your videos Dave. Appreciate your take on these, a lot of other reviewers don't include the things you do. Will this be the year Pixel actually gets more adopters? I know I'm not gonna keep ANY phone for 7 years...
I think maintaining software support is important of course for security, but also in terms of keeping it fresh. While hardware gives a new tactile touch and feels new… so can a new case and a new software update. Software updates give new features and just keep a device interesting (not just for phones but devices in general).
Very interesting take! So far, my opinion has been:
'why don't they just provide patches, instead of OS version upgrades. OS version upgrades bring about too many problems anyway'. So more in line with Win XP + 7 years of patches, or Win 7
But your comment makes me think that OS version updates are also part of keeping the device interesting, and therefore making people hold on to them longer. Truly appreciate your post.
I think the OS support got heavily factored into the price. I don't know how long they would keep this promise as this could potentially eat into future sales, but at the same time, gives it a second life as a kid's device, media device or whatever.
In my opinion..7 years of software support means a lot of things...its either the hardware advancements in the next 7 years would not be a major "leap" in performance or the next 7 years of OS advancements wouldnt be far off from what the Pixel 8 has right now...or the Pixel 8 already has everything a smartphone could think off
It's just a promise that may or may not be broken. No one can predict the future.
Dave, thank you so much for confirming the P8 Pro's screen as flat. I thought it looked so based on the photos, but I watched 6 videos on impressions & NO ONE BUT YOU stated this. Thank you! 🙏🏼❤👍🏼

Great video. I loved your questions.
I have to change my old phone (Pixel 3a) and I knew your channel would have the answers! Last time I was watching your channel was when I was getting my new laptop 2 years ago and it's so comforting to know where to come back to!
Ordered my Pixel 8 with 256gb. Absolutely love the 7 years OS support - it is the only reason I'm upgrading from Pixel 5, as the support has stopped as of this month. Hoping for the best here.
how you got the 256gb ? i only got the 128gb😢
Stop the nonsense. You will not keep a phone for 7 years.
@@fatalradiusdoesn't really matter. One of the reasons apple dominates the market is long term support. It's also part the reason why their resale value is high. The confidence in knowing that you'll not be left out should you for any reason decide to retain the phone is very important and with time would boost sales, which is actually the target. Even users that change phones yearly would typically prefer a brand with long term support
256 with stock should really be good.

Appreciate your thoughts on these devices. Like you, I'm pretty impressed with what the phones offer (including the 7 years of OS updates!). I'm also on team side-eyeing the AI face expression thing. I'm going to be upgrading from a Pixel 4a 5g to a Pixel 8. Since I've been on a Google Fi plan since I initially got my phone, I'm eligible for a big discount when I upgrade (on top of the credit I'll get after sending in my current phone).
Great and accurate analysys , and I totally agree on your thought about Best Take (should we really be doing this?)
Not just that but how can you compare what it can do with a fake photo. I hate presentations. Bet it is going to look noticeably fake.
I think the biggest jaw dropper is the 7 years of software support. I'm surprised they didnt do it back with the pixel 6 since thats when they initially started using in-house cpu, but better to have it later than never I suppose. I wonder what kind of condition the phone will be in at that point knowing alot of people tend to get a new phone every couple years on average
why are people so sure that people getting phone every few years is true? we have falling sales, how does that compute? it seems to me as if most people just get a phone, while there is select minority that constantly upgrades, I imagine disproportionately affecting top models like Samsung and iPhone.
My 7 pro gets software support until 2027

Appreciate a review of the 49" monitor!
Loved the way how Dave put a reality check to the Magic Editor & Eraser tools to produce an enhanced reality, something which didn't really happen. It's pretty much altering reality of the past.. doesn't it really defeat the purpose of "capturing the memories" 😅
It's no different than 90% of the Instagram photos. That sky wasn't that blue. That flower wasn't that red.
I am very glad Google and Samsung are extending software support but I wonder if it will choke out some of the already dwindling competition in the industry. I know some people who didn't buy Motorola phones (I think) despite being interested because of the tiny 2 years of software support back in the day for example. I wish LG had had more software support, didn't squander the potential of their phones after the LG-G4 (say despite being a G5 owner) and was still around to be a competitor to Samsung for example. Not to say Google or Samsung shouldn't do this it's amazing, but wish the others would compete
Well they have to keep up and improve their software update commitments if they want to survive. At least Google and Samsung are showing them that it's possible
@@v3xman Agreed. It's just not too uncommon you see when a company has a massive lead in the industry they try to intentionally starve out their competition. They do something semi-unsustainable, only they have the resources to survive then stop once their competitors are starved out. Not saying this is that, I don't think it is, but you do see it happen
Insightful video!
Hey Dave. Thanks for the review. Will you be testing out the astro mode?
Man the video quality of this channel has gone to another level. I started watching regularly in 2016, and obviously it's gotten better as the channel has grown, but this video in particular, watching it on a 5k Apple display (in 4k res obviously), it feels like Dave is sitting right across from me and telling me about these phones. It's pretty awesome, kind of like an 'aha' moment. Anyway just thought i'd mention that.
I absolutely love my 7 Pro but that flat symmetrical display on the 8 Pro is babe for me ❤
It's still not symmetrical
Great video as always man

Very balanced review. Thank you.
Sticking with my pixel 7 i think. Id like to see some better hardware improvements
I'm not even sure it's enough of a hardware upgrade from my Pixel 6 Pro tbh
The tensor G3 TPU improvement is massive. Double the speed (double!!) from 6's G1. :)
Better hardware improvements!? - what are you expecting, a 2" sensor that doesn't even fit in the blueprint? Take a look at the software and combine them
@@LukasToya That's good to know - I'm worried about heat, though ...
I love everything about the Pixel 8 Pro except its size. Large devices like this are just cumbersome and clunky to use...at least for me (and others I'm sure). I tried out the 15 Pro Max this year thinking its size and weight improvements would make me feel otherwise, but nope. Returned it and went with the smaller 15 Pro, which still has plenty large 6.1-inch display but is simply much easier to grip and use with one hand. Really wish Google could take a page from Apple and offer its Pro model in two sizes. I've heard that's what they're going to do with the Pixel 9 Pro next year so here's hoping that's true.
OMG has it really been tha tlong since I've seen you? I bought my last laptop 2 years ago and your hair is WAY DIFFERENT!
Great points at 4:44 - I take photos and am always questioning the line between too much editing and a natural shot. I think for some normal life, photos with friends at lunch, it matters a lot less than like wedding photos where the event and the real-life situation and the real memories should take priority over how good the photo looks. I know some will opt to look "perfect" in a wedding photo, and I think that's an unrealistic goal. I much prefer candids.
What i really didn't like was the samsung moon shot. Totally fake.
I think the $100 is justified because of the new actua display 2400 and 2000 nits is crazy, also the software support is wild. ANd absolutely stoked for the new chip.
I'm upgrading to a Pixel 8 Pro from a base Pixel 6. That phone is still working great, but battery life can be suspect at times and the fingerprint scanner sucks. Other than that, I've really liked it. The interface is nice and clean and I've noticed no performance issues. I'm mainly looking for the telephoto lens and hopefully better security stuff (fingerprint scanner that doesn't suck, face unlock). I was tempted to go to iPhone after getting a Mac Studio and Macbook Air over the last year, but this seems like a good line of demarcation. I do like being able to customize my phone and get more out of it for the money. In my opinion, the pre-order deal (free watch) and decent trade-in for the Pixel 6 made the price worthwhile.
Preordered immediately yesterday. Coming from an iPhone 14 Pro Max back into the Android family. Managed to snag the free Pixel Watch 2 offer with it. 256gb in Bay Blue with that PW2 and Bay Blue band … sheeesh 🔥
The best take is similar to the BB10 camera software introduced in the Z10.
I am excited for these. However, I wish more of the Pro's features were also on the base emodel. I own a Pixel 7 pro right now and I love it, but i wish it were smaller.
Yeah, the size is why I’m staying on my p5.

7 years of OS updates or 7 years of security updates + how many ever OS updates possible ??
They stated in the keynote: os updates and feature drops (of course not all features for 7 years), not only security updates.

The 8 Pro looks to be a great phone. Only downside i currently see is the charging imo, with 30w it will probably nearly two hours to charge which just isn't up to date anymore. If they fixed all the issues the 7 had i might still switch to the 8 Pro.
Other downside is googles silicon
Other downside is optical fingerprint scanner
I'm more excited to see Dave than the new Pixel product
Damn, how many yrs have passed since I came to this channel. He look like the father of the guy I use to watch here
4:57 They started down this road a long time ago with “computational photography”.
The best take thing is actually really cool to me. I totally get your perspective on it and I actually agree somewhat, but technically those faces that are being swapped around are still the faces of the individual & were taken just before the shutter was pressed if I'm not mistaken. So it really isn't to dissimilar from top shot. I could definitely see it being helpful with animals or kids where you only have a split second where they are looking at the camera.
As a semi-professional photographer taking group shots I copy/paste the best faces from multiple shots to make sure a group of 60-100 has the best faces possible. This feature is automating something that feels very normal to me, just on a smaller scale.
Totally agree

This is it, I might just buy for the software support alone. Not that I would even keep it for that long, but it's cool to know that I could rock this for 4 yrs and hand it off to someone (maybe a friend/family) and they would still have 3 yrs
Exactly. I'm the type to switch brands or model every 1 to 2 years but I still prioritize long term support. If I decide to rock the phone longer for whatever reason (like I did with 1st Gen iphone SE), I need to know that I'm covered so this is a major win imo.

Finally someone mentions the type of fingerprint reader on it! Thank you. Yeah, I agree with you. If the fingerprint reader hasn't improved, I don't see a reason for the $100 price hike. Sadly (not sadly) I'm still going to get it tho.
Apple only says 5-6 but still supports devices at 7-8 years on average so if google actually does this and sticks with it they may have a lot of Apple users jumping ship to give android a try. This could be good for all users in the long run because it will force Samsung and others to update and support their devices longer.
Apple's official stance is 'We'll support it as long as the hardware can run our new software'. They don't give a hard number, but so far that's been 7+ years.
@@michaeldendulk2230my iphone xr still got an ios17 update. I already passed that phone to my mum. So for me 5 years updates more than enough because a lot of people change their phone after 3 years

Being as I ordered the 512 storage option, I'm sorta blown that Google didn't use UFS 4.0 and instead are using the much slower 3.1
Like, why???
Also I'm a bit let down that the screen res took a hit too, altho I'm hoping the brightness will make up for it. I don't know about anyone else but when watching HDR content I find the screen is too dim to really enjoy it.
Everything else I'm excited for.
Good job, Dave. Keep em coming! 👍
Google never gives you everything, it's always something like UFS 3.1, lack of some sort of audio support, bad fingerprint sensor, poor speakers, bad modem. Tons of great software features, nice thinking outside the box, but the fundamentals are always lacking. What aspect of this phone or software will be dropped by next year.
the problem with that "7 years of feature updates" is that they always come up with something that is "only possible with the new chip". So they don't have to bring the new feature to older devices.
Edit: guys, I know apple does that. They are the first thing that came in mind when I was writing this comment. I guess Google is going the same path.
Still pretty good to the the updates tho
Yeah but even apple does that. They have to keep some features new even if it sucks. 7 years is 7 years of os updates, not 7 years of new features
Not to mention that with each upgrade, there's likely a touch of planned obsolescence in terms of performance-the device might introduce new features at the expense of performance. Based on what I've observed with the Pixel 2 XL, I believe that in 7 years, this phone will be considerably slower and the picture quality won't be as sharp as when it was first launched.
That's a very normal tech problem. It's not even a relevant argument against giving software support.
@@chrisbarnard3946 Absolutely. They are pros at doing that
Most of Google's feature updates come from the Google Play Store. So unlikely to hold back software features, especially since Google make their own chips. We're not talking about Qualcom here
Hey Dave. You have a valid point about the software support. But the fact to be considered is a Pixel Device is a True Match to an Iphone as the parent companies control software and hardware parts of these. So I don't see any problems in terms of software updates. Hardware limitations might prevent software feature updates but security updates should be fine.
I'm cool with the flat display, but definitely like the more squared look on my 7 Pro. Something you won't notice much with a case I guess. How ever, I pray that G3 processor ( exynos) is much better. I do like my 7 pro, but I do often experience either poor Ram management or the Processor just can't handle 2 or more things open simultaneously. Fluidity and speed is my number 1 importance, so a little disappointed with that
if you've ever attempted to take one proper group photo (especially kids) to want to print it out later, you'll appreciate the face swap feature for what it is - it's exactly what was needed since always
Or pets
The AI photo filter is super helpful if you have little kids. Getting them to look at a camera is hard. When they do look often it is when the other people in the photo are not looking while trying to get the child's attention. I agree it's not a real "moment" but the event still happens and if I don't have to spend 10 minutes getting the shot, that leave more time to make the memories
Imperfections like that are what makes the photo unique and genuine.
The earbuds also has this transparency feauture as what they said in the keynote that u will never have to remove ur earbuds again because it knows or detects when ur talking to someone and lowers the volume to better hear them
Hi Dave, I wish on your Google Pixel 8 review you will include the Social Media camera test. I've been looking for videos like this and it seems that this is one area that is always being ignored by Google phone reviewers. Main question 1. Is the camera now optimized when using tiktok, FB live etc, 2. How does the social media camera usage in Google Pixel (or quality) vs iphone. Iphone has always been optimized in real life usage when it comes to Social Media Camera usage.
my hot take about the best take is that it's actually a good use of AI in images, it's not like generating an object that is completely not there before, it's literally just replacing your head with your head from a different picture that was taken in the same moment. literally just cropping your head into your own picture but with a help of AI so it's faster, easier, cleaner and doesn't need a heavy photo editing app.
seven years of update is actually crazy.. i mean I can literally buy pixel 8 after 2yrs in a lot lower price and still be getting 5yrs of software update..
My plan lol
The preorder is a better deal sell the watch for 300.00 vs wait 2 years for a 300.00 price drop. 😮 and also consider a trade in to help offset the price even more . They offered me 200.00 for a pixel 4a5g 🎉... ✌️🍻
That "best take" feature was already there in Lumia phones about a decade ago 😂
7 years OS update is impressive! I had Nexus 5 and 6P before, but the Google phone battery was last for 3 to 4 years, then the battery was draining so fast or dead..! Hopefully they are improving the battery life...!
I totally agree with you on the fake AI photos. Who would have thought that in a few years, all those awful photos you had in the 90s / 2000s 2010s are going to be the specials ones
