    H/H match update and preview of the week ahead:
    ...
    This is now week 245 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on April 28, 1978, and originally aired in late May of 1978.
    These are the last few weeks before some major changes: the Star Wheel arrives in 1246, and Richard departs in 1285...
    Our stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and they're joined by:
    ~~~Semi-semi-regular Mary Wickes, holding down the sixth seat this week. This is Mary's 12th week (of 14), having last visited in episodes 1176-1180. This is now her third time in that sixth seat, where she will also spend her final two weeks, which, incidentally, will both be Star Wheel weeks, meaning she's quite likely to get at least one shot at a H/H question before all is said and done. It's a bit surprising that no one has yet called on her, given she's appeared on 55 programs so far. But, considering Richard's grip on that aspect of the game, maybe it's not really that surprising...
    ~~~Nipsey Russell, who returns for his 22nd week (of 28 total). Nipsey joined the Match Game family back in episode 61 (the lucky 13th week of the show), and most recently appeared in episodes 1186-1190. Nipsey will also be one of the many men rotating through the fifth seat after Richard's departure (Nipsey will spend episodes 1306-1310 there). Speaking of Richard, Nipsey and Richard both failed to match on their first 8 H/H questions. Richard scored his first H/H match on his *ninth* try (in episode 58), and it'll be interesting to see if Nipsey does the same on his ninth try. Will that be this week, or will we have to wait for the Star Wheel?
    ~~~Last but not least, Denise DuBarry makes her Match Game debut (pucker up, Denise, here comes Gene!). This is her one and only week on the program.
    After a string of 13 weeks where Richard played all the head-to-head questions, followed by four straight weeks where Richard shared the H/H spotlight a bit, we returned to another all-Richard week last time, and he matched in one of his four attempts.
    Reviewing the past 99 weeks, Richard has played *431* times. Everyone else combined played *60* times. (Charles had 17 opportunities, Brett 14, Fannie 13, Betty 6, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, Marcia Wallace 1, Dick Martin 1, and Don Sutton 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard climbed a tiny bit last week - he's now answered *87.8%* of all the H/H questions during these past 99 weeks (still below his recent peek of 88.5%).
    Richard starts the week off with a very good track record, having matched 42.4% of his H/H questions, but he lags behind Brett who has matched 43.1% of hers, and well behind Charles who's matched 48.7% of his.
    ~~~Today's action:
    The prior episode ended in a tie, so we begin with a tie-breaker today.
    The challenger scores five matches with the Match Game stock answer "John." The champion can't keep up, ultimately falling short by a single "Garden." After winning two games, she departs with a credit of $700.
    *Today's audience match question: "________Watcher"*
    (My thoughts: Bird, Weight, Silent)
    The celebs: Richard (Girl), Brett (Bird), Charles (Weight)
    The choice: Girl
    The answers: Bird, Girl, Weight - Kudos to the panel for getting all the answers, and kudos to Charles for getting the top answer in the third position!
    Our first-time champion has a shot at $2,500 now. I'd be shocked if she picked anyone not named Richard Dawson. (If she does, it'll be his 850th H/H question to date!)
    (It almost seemed silly to ask her.) This is now King Richard's seventh consecutive H/H question (he's only matched once in this current streak so far). His most recent mega-streak of 70 consecutive H/H questions began after Fannie played in episode 1132 and ended when Betty was called on in episode 1200. (Since then he's watched Betty play again in 1205, Brett in 1206, Dick Martin in 1209, Don Sutton in 1212, and Betty again in 1213.)
    Stats: Richard has matched 162 of his 372 most recent attempts (43.5%), 101 of his last 232 attempts (43.5%), 40 of his past 97 attempts (41.2%), and 23 of his past 55 attempts (41.8%). His overall success rate is *42.4%* and this is his 850th attempt so far.
    For the sake of comparison: Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Brett has matched 31 of her 72 attempts (43.1%), and Richard has matched 360 of his 849 attempts (42.4%). Nipsey has answered 8 questions without yet scoring a match. Neither Mary Wickes nor Denise DuBarry has yet answered a H/H question.
    *Today's H/H question: "Skate________"*
    (Another really easy one? Other than skateboard, what is there? Skate on thin ice? No. Skate park? Too modern a concept. Skate key? Pretty old-fashioned, even for 1978. I have to think we'll get a match today!)
    Richard files his card promptly, without consulting his lower-tier colleagues. He seems to think this one is obvious too.
    Our new champion quickly and confidently gives the predicted answer, and the audience loves it! Richard is smiling. I know this is going to be a match.
    Naturally!
    Richard scores his 361st H/H match today.
    ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 matches in 4 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 matches in 7 attempts).
    Betty - 51.2% (21 matches in 41 attempts).
    Charles - 48.6% (34 matches in 70 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.5% (16 matches in 33 attempts).
    (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 matches in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 43.1% (31 matches in 72 attempts).
    Richard - 42.5% (361 matches in 850 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 matches in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1221, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
    GSN is showing the Denise DuBarry episodes from 1978, this week May/June 2023. Just thought I would do some research on Denise, and I was surprised to learn she died in 2019 after contracting a rare fungal illness called Candida auris. She was only 63. 😔😔. She married three times, her second husband was actor Guy Lockwood. They had one daughter. She would later marry a third time and have three sons. She had quite the eclectic career.
      They have brought back Match Game several times over the decades the last version with Alec Baldwin was okay but the magic was with the version from the 1970s. Edgy but not too edgy. The chemistry was superb. Brett, Charles and Richard on the panel and Gene as host was just great. Even Johnny Olson as the announcer was an important ingredient. And I also miss Earl who did important work behind the scenes. His brief appearances were delightful. Match Game 7x was like family, I think.
    • @pencils812
      @pencils812 2 года назад
      @@GizmoFromPizmo I wonder if Richard missed them when he left. I saw an interview with Brett that was done many years after the show ended. Brett said "they" and I assume she meant Charles and maybe Gene, but she said they were glad to see him go and were glad when he didn't match. It seemed in the interview that it was cut off right after she made the comments. Maybe she added in that she was joking and the film maker wanted it to seem like she hated Richard. I'll never know.
    • @kevansf
      I think it would be a hoot to get some people/actors today to play all the parts (Gene, Brett, Charles, Richard, and three more panelists) and do a "tribute" episode of Match Game '76 (just one episode, like a little comedy stage play, but it would probably run a little long, maybe 35 to 40 minutes to give more time for some antics). They could have contestants dress in vintage attire, and use questions stolen or adapted from the real show. A few of the lines and gags could be pre-written, but let the actors do some ad-libbing too!
      I think there's a lot of comedy and nostalgia potential there!
