EVERY "MECHANIC" EVER has put parts in backwards or left parts out (leftover screws anyone). Having done this, once, and corrected it, I'll bet you won't do it a second time AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES FOR A GOOD MECHANIC. Be at peace with your skills.
Khiara, you should absolutely be a mechanic! You fixed one problem with the holes with much creativity then you found out the problem with the pawls and fixed that. Plus the fact that at the end of it all the winch was stripped cleaned and re-lubricated and now works much better. Great job. Winch looks like a Lewmar so a phone call or email to them could get you a replacement top washer to anywhere in the world especially to a Caribbean island which you probably find has a place you can use poste restrante shipping by air in pretty quick time. Lewmar may well even have a contact/agent on the island.
Awesome Khiara not only looks amazing, she is a master repair technician, captain of a wonderful yacht, able to keep her crew in line and on his toes, just love it.. I am currently following two dozen sailing channels and the Millennial Falcon is number 1. The most telling point to me is the loving interactions between the two of you, and of course Khiara's always smiling face. I guess I could praise Adam, but I'm not into guys, and I'm jealous.. Take care and keep each other safe, looking forward to more.
"The word experienced often refers to someone who has gotten away with doing the wrong thing more frequently than you have" Laurence Gonzalez Thank you for honestly sharing your experience with us.
Every mechanic makes mistakes, puts things in backwards, etc! That's how you learn and sometimes it even teaches you something new about how the machine works. That's a successful repair in my book. Great job Winchmaster!
I took a test trying to get into the navy years and years ago and they told me that I could not ever be trained as a Mechanic. Part of the test was putting gears together and they said all my gears had the death sheared off of them. I was taken right back to that time in my life with your experience in this video. Thank you for continuing to take us on your little journey with you.
Love your videos. They're how I unwind after a long day. It's oddly soothing. I binge watched all the episodes though, now I have to wait for the new ones. Thanks for making these.
Always a beautiful passage when sailing west with the Tradewinds:) You never wait for the wind and the best way to circumnavigate the globe :) Enjoyed the video, 😊 thanks
At least you knew enough to call them pawls… I was calling them thingamabobs or humagetchies or squirrelypegs. Well done on the winch repair, Winch Mistress.
I enjoy a number of sailing channels, but I'll never be more than an arm chair sailor. Near the top of the reasons why, is the complexity and effort that seems to be required in servicing winches! 😉 Thanks for sharing!
Hey Khiara, don't put yourself down, you are quite capable as a mechanic, I know a lot of people who would not be able to get a winch back together and working and you did an excellent job of identifying the fault so you could fix it ! A lot of people would have been scratching their heads for a long time and probably had to ask for help, I would be tempted to put a bit more lube on than you did but there is probably some good reason why you didn't overload it with grease.
Well... I can understand the excitement that causes them to rush for the next episode of Adam and K. Two very popular people to hang with (or to crash parties to rub elbows with).
Love watching you both fix things. So much to do on all boats. Glad you found a solution, you're very creative. Best of luck in Grenada. Miss you guys. ❤️❤️
I circumnavigated singlehanded in the high latitudes myself a few years ago and it was the experience of a lifetime. "So many nights I just dream of the ocean, god I wish I was sailing again" ~ Jimmy Buffett Iceland, the Shetlands, the Canaries, South Africa, British Columbia, Cape Horn, the Falklands, Namibia, the Carribean, 40,000 miles, it's all good!!!
Nice winch fix Khiara! Adam should be lucky to have a Chief Engineer like you! LOL I have worked with some that you would put to shame ! LOL Awesome episode guys. Fair winds and following seas Millennial Falcon!!
Lol Live and learn by doing winch master (winch wench). We never stop learning until the day we die, and who knows if that is the end. Good on you for getting stuck in and doing what most wouldn’t even try, you are broadening your experiences and skills with each new challenge that you take on. And by the way, you definitely have good base mechanical aptitude for tackling mechanical jobs.
That was pretty funny. You often hear other sailers on RUclips say "there was no wind so we're motoring" and I think why spend the money just be patient. now I know lol.
Suggestion. Buy a couple of boxes of nitrile gloves for working on anything with oil or grease. Swap out as needed and keep your hands oil, grease and graphite free. It also works when glassing smaller items.
When you get some time i would suggest opening all winches and clean inspect...and grease everything well. Salt water is hard on bearings and such . If it moves grease it... If it doesn't move....Paint it!
plastic cutting boards are an awesome source of solid, super cheap plastic that you can easily 'machine' into plastic parts, either with blade, saw or hot soldering iron.
Thanks for all that inspiration. It is time for me to service my two speed winches, which I shall undertake securely docked at the marina on a pleasant afternoon taking great care about the orientation of my pawls. [Ref. Page 160 - "This Old Boat" Second Edition by Don Casey] I will attempt to download detailed diagrams if they are not already in my possession. My best laid plans often lead to cheerful first effort followed by a determined eventually successful re-do. A-Pawling! That is how it goes.
@@SailingMillennialFalcon Hmmm... I suspected that. That's a pity. I am sure you will find a solution as you are both super smart. Love your channel btw!! Greetings from the UK!!
Wish I had a lump of cash to send you, but fraid I don't. Any of you wealthy fans do it, please 😉 You are a really nice couple, love your videos. Don't worry about a simple mistake like that Khiara. We have all done it.
Hi Khiara, don't knock yoyrself about the winch, you are doing a fantastic job on the mechanical R & M. I've seen tradies with a lower success rate than you. I read earlier someone suggested taking photo's of the part you are repairing as you go along. Good idea, you'll only have to do that the first time. Remember if you make a bo-bo once and fix it that's gaining experience. If you make the same bo-bo a second time that's stupidity. That is one thing you ain't.
Looked like Adam was on the windlass and if my memory is fair, Khiara was suppose to be on the windlass until further notice!!!!! Those winches are tricky and finicky!!!
Think positive gal. You did not break it...Time just wore it out. You remedied a bad situation to make it work until you can get a new one...As for putting in the part backwards, I am with you...Opps
Well done Khiara ! Just amazes me that you know what you are doing! How do you learn to do these things? When you eventually come back to Australia,I will hire you to do all the jobs that need fixing around my house 😂😂😂
K, if you look at that gear, you’ll notice that one side of it has a small groove that mates with the pawl body. The very old Lewmar can be a little tricky like that.
I expect you've already replaced your Lewmar Wavegrip Winch Top Cap in black plastic, part number 15000379 (if it's a size 30/40/52) by now - if not they're $10.85 from P2 Marine. I'm binge watching, looking for the episode where you pulled your prop shaft to check it for straightness when you were having so much vibration.
After a mishap, I now cut a hole in the bottom of a box big enough to clear the base of the winch. Then slide the box over the winch and tape the box to the deck. After that, I disassemble the winch. If anything (like a bearing) unexpectedly slides out, the box has a good chance of catching it. I can say... Lewmar roller bearings bounce twice before going overboard.
As Mr. Mithan pointed out the loaded line should be tangent to the drive gear. You'll wear things out quickly since this is not the case. You can always drill new holes in the top cover after rotating it 90*. New top plates are readily available as are pawls and springs. Think of mistakes as education, not so much as screwing up.
Glad you got the winch sorted. I thinkl we need to start a tally on how many times Khiarra says UMM. 🤣 Thanks for sharing. Hope you get to sail to your next destination soon. Fair winds & regards from the UK
Could you purchase the lady some nitrile gloves for that work? I’ve never rebuilt a wench but the way we packed the bearings of 20 & 30 mm guns was to put a wad of grease in the off hand and smash the bearing into it with the strong hand, pressing the grease through to the other side.
A good chance to learn to sail without winches for emergency training sake. Get it wrapped around a cleat and as tight as you can then quickly luff up just a bit to get it tighter, using the tensioned part of the line to push sideways then taking up slack as you let it out. As for the winch I blame the engineers that designed the parts so they could go in backwards!
A local machinist may be able to make a replacement winch disc out of aluminum flat stock? First thing I thought of when I saw it, since it's easy to turn another one in a lathe.
QandA Maybe. Where do you store your winch handles? You seem to throw then on the 'rockhard' seats. Curious how many you have lost overboard? How many spares do you carry?
Tell us what winch model that is and we will look around for parts. I would be happy to have a co-captain that services winches. You did great....minor boo boo ....part of the fun.
To avoid that sinking feeling be really careful when dismantling the winches or anything really and bringing it inboard to the cockpit. The bearings often come away as you lift the bell housing away and drop out.with a boing boing sper lash, a real bummer. at least where you are it might be an option to spend a fun afternoon diving for it.but not normally.
Only 2nd! I was going to say that Khiara did a great job on the winch until I see that she had to go back and fix it a second time. I'm glad that Captain Bligh wasn't too upset.
Why not just use stainless washers with those bolts, or slightly longer ones? Have the washers press down on the remaining plastic ring, stopping the bolt coming through? Should be much more sturdy than the epoxy layer?
Thank you for sharing your winch misstep. Others might have glossed over that. I appreciate it.
Me too!! Love you Khiara

Hey there! Why not using washers to prevent the bolds from slipping in the hole??
looks like the top of the bolt needs to be flush with the plastic cap or the winch arm will hit them
Unless the bolt sits in the recess perfectly it’s not long enough. Trying to find a longer bolt on the island was a no go. 😒
