TODAY is the DAY! [EP 128] - Nothing beats NEW SAILS!

  • The day of days has arrived! Our new Precision sails are here and we’re eager to get them on our boat and go for a sail!
In this episode we left from Marigot Bay in St Martin and headed south east around the island to a beautiful little spot called Ile Fourche just off the coast of St Barts!
The new sails performed beautifully, they took a fantastic shape and drove the boat forward with much less heeling than our old, baggy jib. Suffice to say we are very happy with them. Standbye for more new sail admiration in the coming weeks!

Khiara, i know you know so what I am about to say comes only from my heart and looking to help avoid an accident. When you wrap the sheet or halyard around your hand and tug on to either tighten or hoist something it frightens because if for some reason the line snaps back it could pull your hand into a winch or cleat or something Its best to wear gloves and hoist hand over hand and or wrap it around the winch, Honestly, only out of concern do I offer this suggestion. And once again I thank both you and Adam for allowing me to story away on your journey. WISHING YOU BOTH SAFE SEAS and steady winds in your sails.

    • @soulie13
      @soulie13 3 года назад +8

A sailing instructor was emphatic that it was thumbs away from the winch, too. Agree with everything - thanks for letting us along for the journey and stay safe!

I have to agree, search out a couple pair of great gloves, but NEVER wrap a rope (thats what they are called in my profession) around your hand. One safe tip you can try is to grab the rope in your hand with your thumb pointing back at yourself, then rotate your hand so your thumb points up; added grip without the risk of getting caught in the rope. BTW: Khiara, your accent is to die for, where are you from (exact region/ town)? Thanks

Adding my vote of concern to the pile. It's the first thing I tell new crew when they come aboard. It made me fear for your hand when I saw you wrap it. All that said, congrats on the new sails! They look fantastic!!!

We got all new sails from Precision in 2019 - main, genoa and asymmetrical spinnaker. We have been very pleased with their performance. Sailed from NC to Georgetown, Exuma and back to Florida and never missed a beat. We would have tested their performance to Grenada but COVID-19 restrictions forced us back to the states. We are so confident in their performance as our primary propulsion that we are converting to electric for the auxiliary. Ron, Jeremy and the crew are awesome to deal with and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Our color scheme is charcoal grey so we threw convention to the wind and got a purple spinnaker. Good luck to you both.

Thank you for another excellent video! I’ll add my +1 to your positive review of Precision Sails. 4 years ago during our search for our boat I contacted them for a quote. A prospective boat we were considering needed a full set of replacement sails. Ron was excellent and the quote was quite reasonable. He also spent some time talking about the local boat market in Victoria. I thought the extra time he spent on our call was remarkable. Long story shorter the deal fell through on that boat and several months later we found ourselves in Victoria looking at more boats. We were close to the Precision loft and decided to pop in and say hello. Remembering Ron’s knowledge of the local market we were hoping for a possible lead on a gem. Well Ron was on a long call with a client so we attempted to excuse ourselves and carry on. When the other staff learned we were boat shopping everything stopped for an impromptu brain storming session on what was for sale in the area. To top it off they insisted we tour the facilities as well! I was mortified that we pbby stopped any productivity for close to an hour but the level of personal service was something I will not forget. Never did get to talk to Ron that day and wound up purchasing a boat that is equipped with excellent sails. When the time does come to update our equipment, Precision will be my first call!

I just found your channel. You are delightful and always smiling. So right now I am binge watching - only on episode 20. But I'll keep going. I just have to say I haven't watched any sailing videos around Puerto Rico. Yours was the first. Even though in the beginning you had problems with the prop shaft you made it seem very appealing there. The people and the places seemed genuinely friendly. Be safe, take care, I'm looking forward to your future adventures. I didn't hear you mention anything about having an EPIRB. You have one, yes? I'll probably see it in later videos.

Well done guys. I received my new genoa and staysail from Precision in February. I had three quotes for the sails, and in the end Precision beat the other two on price, quality of the cloth and ability to answer all my questions without attitude (which neither of the local lofts had the ability to do). Not going to lie though... I did all the measuring solo, which for a first time boat owner was daunting and a lotta work. But, as you said the design team is excellent and worked me through the process of double checking any questionable measurements while putting up with my long winded questions, what if's, and general musings. Jeremy was my designer and was great at both design and psychological therapy 😉

I bought a new main from Precision about 4 years ago, for a new (to me) project boat that didn't come with one. I knew nothing about sails and Ron walked me through the whole process, teaching me along the way. Mine is a significantly lighter duty sail than you got (for Chesapeake Bay sailing), but 4 years on, I couldn't be happier. It is still crisp, performs incredibly well, and I can't imagine buying from any other loft in the future. I think you're going to enjoy yours.

Beautiful sails, and stoked to hear that you’re able to point higher. At least going up wind, I think it’s more satisfying to have a tighter pointing angle and have a respectable speed as opposed to not being able to point but going quickly (in the wrong direction). Wow....!!!!
Your Jenny is such a nice shape!!!! Very close hauled.....pointing very high!! Yet....there's no turbulence rolling up the backside!! She stays full....and keeps drawing you forward!!
I mean you're pointing sooo high....you'll loose hull speed. But you pointing so darn high in doing so!!! Let up off the wind a bit....let the sail out a bit. And you'll pick up speed, but heel more. When you're so hard on the wind....you don't produce as much air speed around the backside of the sail, to give as much forward speed....and heeling vectors.
But....you were able to point so darn high, without backside sail turbulence!!
Gotta make the headlands, on that one tack!!🤣😅👍👍
    Excellent....💕⛵💕!!!

Jib sheets? If you’ve renewed the sails you should consider new jib sheets too. Small relative cost but old sheets stretch when the wind comes on new sails instead of transferring the power efficiently to drive the boat.

Hey Adam, just was thinking about outboard motor thefts at the dinghy docks and you with your new outboard, wouldn’t you think it prudent of a manufacturer to render the motor useless if you didn’t have a “chipped” circuit board type of “key” ? Locks and cables can be cut and boats run off at that time, where as the rightful owner with his chip key in his/her pocket would give you the security needed. And the only way a replacement chip could be replaced was to provide the motor serial number to the manufacturer? We spent 10 days on a charter out of St Lucia a couple of years ago and St Vincent had the reputation of thefts, which ultimately we just bypassed the island completely. Carrying onto Bequia. St Vincent basically cutting their own throat of tourism dollars! Cheers and love the channel. Wish I were there Doug in Vancouver Canada.

Would love to see how you reef that hanked on staysail - not an easy thing to do, especially in the sort of conditions when you would need to.
Also, can your instruments measure Velocity Made Good (VMG) to your destination, or as an upwind vector? Very useful when close hauled, to determine the optimum upwind sailing angle.
    thanks for the great videos

    Hi Guys
Thanks for wonderful videos. You make really good ones well done.
Suggestion: Make multiple intros and put different ones on each video. Will help the interest side of things.

Q: How can you tell if two sailboats are racing? A: They're heading in the same direction.

Well you got some awesome sails there Adam & Khiara. The Falcon is looking SHARP in her new threads. Adam, are the old sails going to be saved for "emergency" repair situations or do you plan on donating, selling or whatever comes to mind with them (and no I'm not looking to purchase, just curious as to what most do with their old sails.
