    Impellers and salt water cooling systems. There are more stories about them in my Sailing Technology Playlist than any other topic, now this one included. I feel its one of the most important topics a sailor and motor yacht can know and should know about . And, in addition to stories about typical cooling systems, there are a few VERY unusual stories. One is a story about a very experienced sailor who lost something that couldn't be repaired in passage and ended up running salt water through the fresh water circuit (intentionally) and making it to port without damage ! (Emerald Steel) . Sailing Technology playlist at the CaliforniaKayaker N6GRG channel. Emerald Steel called it "Emergency cooling system repair" and wow, extremely unusual what he did. There are at least two about Keel Coolers, now those are nice. And some videos on working on the impeller in a Outboard Dinghy engine, yes, they have them also. Cooling systems and marine bolts in general break constantly unless generously smeared with anti-sieze compound !

    A method I use to remove broken bolts is with a star bit. Drill a hole in the broken bolt slightly smaller than the star bit. Use a hammer to drive the start bit in, then remove with a ratchet and socket. Hope this helps.

    Love you guys! I’ve been turning wrenches for over 40 years. Shit is gonna break. How you recover from it is where the learning takes place. Don’t quit trying just because you stripped or broke a bolt. Just try to learn from the experience. Ads, you did a great job extracting that broken bolt!!! Sometimes you have to think out of the box. I am constantly impressed with not only the quality of your videos but the real life content. Hey guys.
    Been following your journey for a while now and its the way that you seem just to be living everyday life with real problems and hassles that make your channel so relatable and worth watching. Personally I really do love it when you have episodes like these (also yard episodes!) because just like you the watchers feel that ache to "get back on the water" and when you do get out there the adventures seem so much more deserved. Frankly, if you were cruising around without breaking parts and lazing on beaches I for one would fail to be able to relate anymore. Your channel would lose its character and really you guys would just be lost behind the editing. Anyways, really love allowing your vids to stack up so that I can watch a couple in a go when I carve out a free evening. With love from Canada. Cheers mates!

    Congrats on the new sails, and seeing the whales (sorry I watched those two episodes on the TV so couldn’t comment). I spent 9 summers sailing between the BVI and Martinique and only saw a whale once, so you are super lucky! Furling the jib/genoa with the winch while you are going upwind is totally fine as long as you remember to ease the sheet. In unexpected blows when I need to get the headsail in suddenly, I’ve found that going almost dead-down wind is the easiest way, but you need a competent hand on the helm to avoid an accidental gybe, particularly if you have any seas. I’m a lurker and just wanted to say I love your show, you two never fail to make me smile and want to get back on the water! Go back to Il Forche when the winds make the anchorage less rolly, the sunset from the top is awesome and the goats are very friendly!

    If it happens again on something a bit more substantial, get a welder to stick a piece of copper pipe into the hole, so it's flush/just past, then weld inside the copper pipe till your out of the hole, try fill the copper pipe, then place a nut on top and weld it to your first weld. The copper tube will protect the threads and case and you'll have a fresh nut to pull the old bolt out. There are tutorials on youtube.
    I really liked your solution though, doesn't need a welder and it works! I'll add that to memory

    Brain over Braun!!! That’s what I always said to my son when he was reefing on something that was giving him resistance, or trying to carry way more at one time than was practical... I told him that since forcing it or overloading will likely make matters worse, he should stop and think for a minute to outwit the problem or just make one extra trip to avoid dropping the whole lot. HE ALWAYS HATED WHEN I’D SAY THAT!! But now he is 30 and I was recently visiting his house one day while he was working on something, and I literally heard him growl and say to himself, “Brain over Braun, Robert!” He learned! 😂😉😁

    Olive Oyl. Torgue wrench until you get a feel for 1/2 turn before it breaks. Left hand drill bits. Heli-Coil (5X.8, 6X1.0, 8X1.25). @10:46 impeller is in wrong. Sometimes they will self right, sometimes not. Good idea to put some lube on a new impeller. Silicone grease or dish wash liquid works fine. Tef-gel or anti seize on the bolts or 242 Blu Loctite. You can make installation easy by putting a tie strap/cable tie or hose clamp on the impeller to compress it to make it easy to slide into the housing.

    Left hand drill set. The bolt was broken not stuck. It would walk right out. And if you Did manage to drill all the way thru the screw, then use the easy out. But, it was good the bolt broke and didn’t strip the housing. A couple of heli-coil kits on board are a money saver. Adams aerospace background should have him good to go with those.

    Hello from Finland!
    Dont worry Khiara, i’m all so a person who brakes every bolt. Positive side is that i learn to ”clear” the hole. Just maintenanced my outboard gear lever and needed to file the screw on both side to get the shaft out 😁 then drilled a new hole.
    Best method if possible is to weld nut on broken bolt, but in boat that is of course little bit harder. But good thing that Adam knows thing or two on broken bolts .

  • @cbylsma626
    @cbylsma626 Год назад

    Just a note, in case no one mentioned it, the impeller pulls in seawater opposite of the direction Adam was describing, the offset creates a barrier to force the water out! So it means the water is moving around the housing, not being forced through the offset. Vaned vacuum pumps etc work on the same principle.

    I'd recommends a small inch pound torque wrench for the smaller engine related bolts. it'll keep the bolts tightened to the same amount, as well as improve your sealing straightness of parts. Larger torque wrench is most likely not needed, as that would imply larger repairs that most likely would be done by a mechanic anyway. Just my two cents. (25 yrs mechanical experience)

  • @operator0
    @operator0 3 года назад

    It's possible to drill screws out of blind holes.This is much easier to do if the head of the screw is still attached and if it's most anything other than a flat head screw, as you will use the tool receptor to center your drill, which you can't do if it's just a long slot for a flat head screw driver. Just be sure to know what size screw it is and use a drill that's slightly smaller than the tap drill size, and make sure the drill is drilling straight and true with the screw hole.
    It helps if you have high quality drills. MSC and McMaster-Carr sells high quality drill index 115 piece drill index sets. I would look for 115 piece set in the $400 range so you can be assured that the drills will be able to handle stainless. It may also be advantageous to stock a few left handed drills to use for this, as a left handed drill will sometimes grab onto corroded drill and back it out of the hole, like a screw extractor.
    I DO NOT recommend screw extractors. I have had very little success with them, and the machinists I know have the same experience. They will often break off in the screw, and extractors cannot be drilled out. Left handed drills will not break, instead they will just continue to drill more material out until they either grab the screw, or drill the whole thing out.
    Do not drill stainless at full speed. Spin that drill slowly, and use some kind of cutting fluid. Even with high quality drills, stainless can dull those things in an instant if you spin them too fast. Drills can be resharpened using a bench grinder, belt sander, or even something like a cutoff wheel on a Dremel. It takes knowledge and practice to resharpen a drill, but it can be learned, and it really comes in handy.
    The technique of using a slightly smaller drill than the tap drill size will save the internal threads of the hole, but will leave some screw material in the hole. After you drill your initial hole, and you see that you have drilled straight and true, you should step up to the next size drill until you finally see the start of the threads. At this point, you can use a thread pick to pick the rest of the screw out of the threads, or use a tap to gently coax the remainder of the screw out of the internal threads.
    This can be a time consuming job, but it can save you a lot of money if you break something off in a very expensive and important part, like your engine block.

    Mrs. Popeye. AKA Olive Oil. I went through a period of time, in my youth, like you, when I either broke or stripped out every other bolt or screw I touched. I did learn better, but it took a while. I think part of it is that we don't think we have the strength to actually break bolts until we do it a few times. All I can say is, I'm impressed. You guys are the best.

    That is because different bolts have different torque settings (Plus, a broken bolt will need a new bolt and an easy out to remove it)

    Just get a torque wrench, a couple of bolts & nuts and a vise. Torque them down and compare how it feels with your tools and you'll develop a feeling on how much you can reef on things. Also, more torque seldomly fixes leaks. Broken bolts in through holes are easy, if you can't get them just drill through and use a nut or tap a bigger thread. ez outs can be a pain if they break since it's hardened steel. I'd prefer to punch in a sacrificial torx bit. Also a chisel can be quite handy to turn the remainder of the bolt.

    Great video! Congratulations on your continued success in cruising! Can you post links or information on the soundtrack? I really liked the tunes you were playing during the video and the sailing segments

    Water pump, replaced my screws on my water pump with much easier hand tunable bolts (found product in back of boating magazine) to replace the originals. Easy turn, easy to install. Can do it in a strong sea way. I found the gasket was usually made of paper and over tightening was only for one shot approach as a get home measure.

    Could have been worse, you could have cracked the casing that pump to which that pump is attached! Ask me how I know... this video is a great real view into sailboat life!

    Khiara, I have over-tightened, broke and stripped so many screws and bolts myself I can not remeber. When you said about "that sound" and a "sudden ease" all these times came back to me. Ouch. One day I ate the humble pie and bought a dynamometric/torque wrench, actualy a couple of them of different ranges. Even the "consumer grade" will do. You can't judge the torque by hand on an old greasy worn-out bolt or in a soft metal like aluminium. Workshop manuals warn against trying it.

    A suggestion. Get an "anti-seize" product for bolts and such that need to be disassembled. It will make life a bit easier when you have to change parts in the future. Nice job on the fix, Kihara. Another bit of advice, IF there is a gasket involved and after proper re-assembly, it leaks, take it apart and find out why it leaks. Dirt on the surfaces to be mated, broken, torn gasket are 2 of the possibilities.
