Our NEW home (for now)... 500 mile TEST SAIL on a Kraken 50! [EP 145]

  • Last episode we were invited by Kraken Yachts to go sailing on the new Kraken 50 for a 500 mile shakedown sail before they handed it off to its new owner.
    After waking up in our new digs in Turkey, we make plan on where we are going to sail around the Sea of Marmara for the next 5 days. That afternoon, we set off for our first anchorage.
    The next day we start sailing early and use some new sail configurations that we’ve never tried before (as the Kraken 50 is a solent rig).

    As someone that has worked in marinas I know that I couldn't even afford to have this boat washed and cleaned regularly. I think most people that can afford things like this don't actually use them for their intended purpose.

    Wow! - what a fine boat - the Kraken. I'm fairly new to your channel. I started at the beginning and am on episode 40. I skipped ahead just to see where you are and leave a comment and a thank you. You two have produced a fine series. I have limited sailing experience. (Lived on a small island in WA state and sailed a dory - almost daily for 3 years) Later had the use of a Wauquiez Pretorien 35 for a while around Seattle. I'm looking forward to the rest of your adventures.

This is the first new modern build boat that really has me thinking. But to do it I would have to sell my airplane. That sit down discussion you had with the builder was excellent I have watched it twice, because what he said really struck home. In relation to a cruising boat and that is exactly what we want. It is beautifully designed. I will tell you how good it is my wife actually sat down and watched the whole discussion and that is first.

    Most modern furling gear has 2 slots to enable wing on wing sailing on one jib.
    Like everything sailing its a compromise, id rather have a cutter with an extendable bow sprit for a code zero.
    Wing on wing is all cutesy for youtube vids, but those watching dont have to live with the rolling it causes.

    If you two keep producing the type and quality of content you have been of late, those extra million subs won't be long in coming. You have matured immensely (as sailors, boat technicians, videographers, story tellers, editors--the whole bit) since you started the channel and it has been fun to be able to witness it as you take us all along for the ride (or sail as it may be). It’s a pleasure each week to get the notification which is an invitation to sit back, relax, grab a favorite beverage and watch you sail, explore, and grow. It would be great for you to work a deal to have a Kraken 50 as the Millennial Falcon II. Keep your eyes on the goal of sailing the world and allowing all of us to join you in the adventures through wonderfully-produced videos and I’m confident great things will happen. God Bless and happy sailing.

    I was noticing the sort of 'U' shape of the captain's chair and thought it would be a good idea to have a 'U' shaped seat on rollers so that when the boat heeled over the seat would roll to keep the skipper vertical and maybe save a back or neck from going out from the twisting and turning.

    OK Adam, you are in love and I see why. I do wonder, why do the shrouds connect at the deck behind the mast? I can see it would strengthen the rig when running, but they also block the main from fully extending.

    • @SailingMillennialFalcon
      @SailingMillennialFalcon  3 года назад

      Swept back spreaders and thus rear mounted top caps is fairly common these days. I’m reasonably sure it’s to facilitate some pre bend in the mast. Sails resting on the spreaders is a problem even for perpendicular spreaders. The Falcon has this issue too. The Solent rig sort of circumvented this by removing the need for the mainsail when running deep downwind thus keeping it off the spreaders.
