I use a very efficent process when I make digital art Step 1: Look for my pen for like 15 minutes Step 2: Paint for half an hour only to realize I've been painting on the wrong layer Step 3: Having the drawing program crash right before I'm finished
Try to paint in one layer - I know it seems harder, but it is easier actually, because you don't have to keep track of all of the layers and which is which. PS. Drawing program should have an autosave feature? At least Krita has it. I set up my Krita to autosave every 3 minutes, because it/my computer crashes sometimes and I don't wanna lose anything. And in most of cases I don't lose.
My tips: - try painting with messy, textured brush - try painting with messy, textured brush in color right away, without sketch - try painting on one layer (don't be afraid; challenge yourself if it is too scary) - don't overuse gradients or blending, it can look ugly if it is too smooth - try techniques from different youtube artists, not only the standard sketch -> sketch -> lineart -> color -> multiply for shadows - challenge yourself and try different things (not just the ones I mentioned), you can be surprised
I don't make them (I tried but not successfully), I use ones from Borodante (www.patreon.com/posts/6133655 , mostly Juvenile_A brush tip with my own settings (a little opacity adjustment based on pressure and nothing else)). You can add pattern to it, if textured brush tip is not enough. I guess using chalk brush should be enough for messiness in brushes, but I didn't try it (Krita's chalk brush wasn't my favourite at that time and I didn't check it later). I think adding texture from a photo (convenient original photo -> desaturate -> adjust levels and contrast -> cut edges and prepare -> brush tip) could help too. And everything should be done in soft brushes I guess.
Why? Videos like this one only half help. She talks about flipping, layer multiplying, etc, but the video isn't SHOWING what she's talking about. So I'm still not learning the point of, or how, or why.
Thanks for saying line art doesn't have to be perfect. This is one thing that I find myself struggling with. I really like the more sketchy and painterly look that digital art can have, yet whenever I draw I spend hours perfecting everything. I need to remind myself that just because it's digital, doesn't mean it has to be clean and crisp. Thanks for this video!
For me it's opposite. Use as little layers as possible. When you use many layers, it can happen after a while that you are on a lower layer and try to draw and nothing happens.. Is it the opacity? Pen presure? Wrong tool?... No. And then you discover that you are on the wrong layer that is covered with other layers. This happened so many times to me. More layers can have benefits, but I try to keep it as simple as possible to have a good overview. I depends on your workflow and what works best for you.
I recommend medibang for beginners! It's easy to learn, and it's better quality than firealpaca even tough they're supposed to be pretty much the same.
@@Trisuku There is a way to fix that. Go to Settings and then Configure Krita, under Display go to the Canvas Graphic Acceleration box, Change the Renderer from Open GL to Direct3D 11 and then restart the software, and it's fixed
My style is really cartoonish and I can't draw it sketchy for some reason...And I keep looking for the save button when I'm drawing on paper. Thanks, digital art.
Olivia Beakman That’s how I was a few months back when I was deciding what to do because I’ve only ever drawn traditionally since I was little, but I always loved pictures I saw on the internet of digital art and stuff so I really wanted to. I never really was great at traditional art either though, like I knew nothing about color theory when I started or shading. I didn’t know anything at all really. It’s so so different and it’s really intimating at first, but if you do start just do it slowly. I went head first and pushed myself too hard. When I first started I was so confused on everything possible lol, but honestly it was so worth it. Digital art and my drawing tablet are my life now x3 and I’ve been doing it for 6 months and I can finally say I’m aware how to do everything so now it’s just about practice. I think I’m going to start keeping a sketchbook though because I need to practice a lot more and for some reason I just hate doing that on digital. A sketchbook seems like a more of a creative habitat. If you do try digital best of luck lol, it’s defiantly a journey but a good one. ~
I was horrible and thought I could never draw on a computer. I have some tips. Get a drawing tablet if you don't have one already. Don't bother with a mouse. Trust me. It will make it easier, and most digital artists find it impossible to do without it. Draw cartoon ponies. I know following mlp drawing guides sounds childish, but they are pretty easy to draw for a beginner. The first piece I did was a pony. Get paint tool sai. I know it costs money, but if you look it up there is a RUclips video on how to get it for free. Look up tutorials to help you get a feel for where everything is. And don't be afraid to use the select tool. I didn't know it existed for around a month, but apparently it's pretty useful. And most importantly, get a feel for it! When I first got mine, I used Google quickdraw for 30 minutes. I use my tablet instead of a mouse sometimes.
1st: Thank you so much for the tips! I might try to paint with dull colors to make one stand out c: I never thought of that, I always paint only with dull colors because I'm scared of oversaturating the painting. 2nd: I totally love this illustration you made! It feels like something you could find in a book
Thanks for all you advice ! Watching your video actually made me try digital art again, buy Paint Tool SAI and improve a lot :) It's really relaxing watching your draw. I struggle with coloring though, so one idea for a future advice video : could you give some tips about brush settings ? Maybe explain the settings you use most ?
. I love your videos so much! lots of good advice. can you make a video about how to cartoonize subjects when looking references? thanks, that'd be very helpful.
yeah its pretty nice for a free app.... i also bought Autodesk Sketchbook for 0.99ct and all in all its a little better than medibang paint but some aspekts in Autodesk Sketchbook are much worse than in medibang paint... iso i keep using both of them for different things
This is one I never see recommended, but Pixlr is a great online tool which is like a less complicated version of Photoshop. Been using it for years to digitally colour and shade my traditional lineart, and always works well for me 😊 and it’s free!
Hey, been following your usage of PTS 2 version 2016.11 for quite some time. There's a newer version since and the last (as of today) is 2017.8.20. I wanna see you use that version and tell us how it goes. I think there's not much difference from your current, but more on stability. Koji (the developer), stated that v2 will launch this year (2017). Its almost the end of the year and I think its launching soon, quite imminent. Maybe he's doing the final stuffs of cleanup, packaging, making brushes and hopefully redesign his website.
If someone wants to just try out digital art, I recommend using the Corel Painter free trials. They have like 3 different softwares (some are very expensive) and they have 30 day trials for each with no drawbacks. So that's three months of free software and it's super good. My only issue is that the tutorials for the tools on Corel are confusing. So if you didn't want to be held back by lagginess or confusing interfaces, you could try that out.
I brought a Tablet and i use krita , im quite good AT it , the thing IS that my Tablet Is more saturated than my pc ( because the Tablet need to be plug on a computer, second eye like ) and i have some struggle to do the colour phase because of that , any tips to do it eazier than looking AT the pc screen what the color really looks like ?
Yeah, fire alpaca is a great free program. So is meek any, I believe the have their own costum brushes, only for medi bang. Medi bang is similar to firealpaca, just has more options
Bought opencanvas 7 for about 40 bucks this Halloween Steam Sale just to change my main software (previously; SAI + Photoshop CC). I'm not disappointed in the slightest. I actually find it very good. _woah_
I have no idea what you mean by gradients on a digital art program. How do you use gradients? I really enjoy your art and videos, although I struggle with digital art
+Awabia Belle mostly for backgrounds or lighting effects. I don't use it that much, I just forget that it's there sometimes so I wanted to remind people in case anyone is like me 😆
Great tips, lovely painting great to see an invertebrate painting, I see so many pretty girls it can get old. I think we should all paint many subjects not omitting pretty girls but also not exclusively drawing and painting them. The only centipede art I’ve even seen on RUclips, more animals everyone, please! More tips; use the perspective tools in Procreate and clip studio. Procreate currently has no gradient tool, clip studio is worth the cost as it has many great brushes, vector brushes, 3D posing and tone. It is great for doing black and white manga and comic book art as well as full colour paintings. However clip studio can’t scan in traditional drawings. Use photographs with your I pad pro to import traditional linear, pencils or roughs to paint over in Procreate and you can also matte paint using photos, it’s easy and awesome to make custom brushes in Procreate, consider using more references but only after you have done a rough copy of your idea so that it;s more original and the reference helps you create your work rather than copying too directly from the reference. Use public domain images if you want to direct copy fro a photo, and you own the copyright in photos you take so also take your own reference! Steal colours and make pallets from photos and other works of art, no one owns the copyright in a colour palette! That’s all for now, good video again.
A scanner would be best, but if you don't have one try the app Camscanner! It lets you choose where the corners of the page are in the picture and it automatically makes it nice and flat :) Then you can send it to your computer somehow, fastest way for me is using Google Drive because I have the app on my phone.
I once almost lost my pen. I looked everywhere: under the table, in the nearby drawers, even in the other rooms; nothing. Luckily I looked in the bin too before surrendering. If I hadn't done it, probably I would have never seen the pen again...

A really good free art program is ibispaint x (for ipads and tablets)
I'm just about positive that medibang and firealpaca are _exactly_ the same thing. The only difference is the color of the layout
Fire Alpaca is... Microsoft Paint basically. Medibang's not terrible, it's very similar to Photoshop in layout.

i use my art tablet to draw on my Microsoft trash can

nothing helps when you cant even draw a semi circle
Procreate. Sorry, I'm such a child. XD

Procreate costs money ;v;

fire alpca isn't that good for drawing interesting picture
watch no one sees this comment
No, it can be used for amazing drawings, you just haven’t seen any
