Play with the effects and filters. You need to know how things look infront, back, sides, bottom, top, literally 360° angle to know the measurements. Draw everyday. Do several artstyles and see which suits you best. You can have an inconsistent artstyle. Have a good color palette. Know the primary colors, secondary, the other colors. Know which color compliments a color. For example, baby pink and grey. Its a good color combination. Avoid using too saturated colors, REALLY bright colors except if the art ur doing is like an Arcade, pixel thing (idk what to call it) Know how the bones work. A body part doesnt always move everywhere. For example, the knee doesnt move 360° so yeah, know how that works. Know your artstyle. If a certain artstyle doesnt suit u, dont do it. Find a better artstyle. A non artist looking at ur art will notice the artstyle and be like- 🙂, its not THAT enough like, it doesnt suit you. An artist looking at it will notice the artstyle too. Do you tho, find your artstyle too. Take critics. An artist is never an artist without critics, critical responses are something you can take to do better. For example, you post something on a platform, a comment will say "The hand is kinda unproportioned... Nice art tho", take it as a compliment. Its not something you should be sad about. Draw everyday to avoid an artblock cuz those suck alot. I have more but im too lazy-
Yay someone else who uses MediBang! Also, take screenshots if needed. People tend to say you didn’t actually make an art piece if it’s too good so I guess.. record ur progress, and if you lose the piece, you can just continue off the Images you took if needed
@_EyEDeX_ :3 Even if this comment is supposed to be a joke, math is a subject used in most jobs, but physics, not much. The other subject used a lot is English, so that’s more useful than physics.
I've been drawing traditionally for my entire life and only recently I got a digital drawing pad (ones without the screen) to try out digital art. To my surprise, it was pretty enjoyable at the start even thought I haven't gotten used to the pad itself. But to be honest my drawing skills just ran away the moment I picked up the pen lmao
Has your traditional suffered because of it? Cause mine has. I got so hyperfocused on learning digital, I picked up my pen and sketchbook and thought 'why was I ever allowed to do anything ever? why has though forsaken me....'
@@CrumblesXo Oh you bet it has lol, as a matter of fact I've draw digitally so much that the concept of pencil on paper has started to feel alien. Like I'm so used to scribbling on the pad while looking at the screen that it feels weird having lines manifest out from the pencil in front of my eyes lmao
@@risukual I'm sorry that you're also going through it, but I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one.... Someone asked me to paint something for xmas, and it felt like the equivalent or trying to run a marathon after a 20-minute shit. I had to re-learn how to do literally everything I've spent the last x amount of years doing...
@@CrumblesXo danggg that's quite unfortunate, I can only imagine how that'd feel. Though the furthest I've ever went with traditional media is just some good ol' Staedtler color pencils, I rarely tread into anything else other than pencils so I probabily wouldn't have to relearn TOO much, yet... HOWEVER, traditional sketches alone might already be enough to make me regret not touching the medium since middle school lmao I guess this really means we have to go back and forth both mediums from time to time, eh? xD
@@risukual same 😂 I use procreate and to undo I can just tap the screen with my index and middle finger, and when I went back to traditional art I tapped the paper when I made a mistake 💀
This... I think this is exactly what I needed. For once, my youtube recommendations have blessed me. I've learned so much from this one video, and your art is gorgeous! Thank you so much
"I tend to shift my way of working with almost every picture" Bro same. I feel like I'm changing my technique and style every illustration lol. It's fun though to try something different every time
Oh, my god. I'm speechless. Been drawing for about 15 years now. I've had the occasional "Ohhhh!" moments when it came to art style and anatomy skill where there was a sudden leap in the quality of my stuff... but that hasn't happened in years now and I feel like I plateaued so hard with no progression. Everything I draw looks identical even if drawn in a different style entirely, and I felt so set in my ways that I was scared to try anything else. But this taught me about things I didn't even know existed or know that I'd have really wanted.
I never knew how to use the magicwand tool, until today and I thank you for that🤧 I spent almost an hour just doing FLAT COLORS. I use medibang and whenever I use the bucket tool, white lines appear around the lineart, so I have to color those manually. But now I can do it in like 10 minutes!! THANK YOU!
That *and while you're there click the like button* SURE CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD ISJSJJSKWKW THAT WAS SO HOT AND CUTE AT THE SAME TIME Besides that, thanks for the tutorial! I was really looking forward to it and it helps a lot!

dollar store styluses work just fine I've been using a pen stylus from a campground that was free...... on an iPad....... sooooooo.... save your money lol
ShardsOlws bro you can easily find 300 to 400 dollar iPads on amazon or eBay or even Best Buy! The newest iPads are all the rage the iPad pros from like 2018 or 2017 are much cheaper now because of the release of the newest ones
2 years later this is still one of the best digital painting tutorials I've found. Almost all of the fundamentals and techniques I've developed in my digital painting process are from here.
I absolutely loved this! I actually kinda hate myself for not realizing that I could just use the Multiply tool to directly color scanned lineart. I have spent the last couple years just redrawing lineart from my scanned pictures in Sai because I didn't realize that. x_x For any prospective digital artists out there, listen to the advice on the screenless tablet. I HIGHLY recommend it. I use the Intuos4, and it feels natural after a short time. It's like a computer mouse: you aren't looking at it when you are using it to navigate the screen. Plus, you won't run into calibration issues that I have run into when drawing directly on a screen. If you need practice, I'd recommend using your tablet in place of a mouse when you are navigating your browser and such. It really helps you to connect the motion of the pen and the screen.
I swear that I'm smashing like button in this video. Thank you for always been so sincere in all your videos. Everybody who's starting in digital painting should watch this.
One recomendation for those who battle with learning how to use a digital tablet, one thing i did was to use the tablet for everything, and i mean everything, a tablet is basically a replacement for a mouse so i use it to navigate through the internet copy archives, etc, the only thing i didnt do with the tablet is play videogames, this is because a tablet works diferently to a mouse, instead of dragging it through the screen you levitate it over the surface with the surface of the tablet representing the screen to scale, this can take a while to get used to, i personaly did this and in a couple of days i was already able to do some solid drawings and quickly got accostumed to the feel of the tablet, but i havent tested this with no one but myself Also another recomendation is to keep some drawing pencils and a sketch book nearby and keep practicing tradicional art every now and then, digital and traditional are similar and a lot of the skills and muscle memory are intercheangable, but both also are diferent skills with diferent levels and if you over train yourself in one you can literaly forgot how to do the other, so keep your skills sharp by sometimes doing a drawing in traditional
I just got my first drawing tablet and I’ve been trying to figure out how to use it properly for a few days and I found that this video had the most useful information I’ve heard Thanks a lot
I’m only halfway through and this has already been a massively helpful video! I love how succinct you are, my biggest pet peeve is a video that spends half the time beating around the bush, but you get the point right away. Great stuff!
Tip that I use: when sketching make different sections different colors:e.g: hair =purple, face =orange arm=Red etc. Make sure to keep them all in one layer and they have to be highly saturated so you don't confuse it with the line art or color blocking layer, lower the opacity on the sketch obviously. Hopefully it helps you.
I both hate and absolutely adore this video; it describes all of the different digital art techniques I spent three years teaching myself; this is a really insanely good video, it describes the struggle of digital art perfectly well and I love it!! Makes me feel like this is one of the best videos on youtube, it was amazing!!
This was honestly the most useful beginners tutorial ive ever seen! Other people tend to make everything so over complicated that a beginner like me cant follow, but this was nice and easy :)
Seriously, thank you! I have been trying my hand at digital art... And I've been through so many yt and skill share classes and videos. This is by far the best video and most helpful thing I have come across. Much love!
I just got a wacom intuos medium recently and for the moment I am pretty satisfied. I don't make the best thing ever at all , but your a big source of inspiration! Thanks you to be here ! ( why did I thanks you about that xD )

MOOD. Been doing digital art since I was 16 (so nearly 13 years now), and there is still so much to learn. But it's satisfying seeing my progress over the years.
U told us to be here yesterday so I'm here I have no questions and just wanted to step back and thank you for all these amazing videos and live streams😀😁😘
I'd combine cliping mask method with the one used by Webang group mask(forgot the exact name), wich is imo more flexible than than cliping mask alone.I tend to use rarely cliping masks, I just prepare the piece with group masks(wich takes a few years xD). The layers structure would look something like this(for me): Group[Shape of all the characters] -Group[shape first character] --final touches --effects --light/shadows --color --sketch[I slowly erase it during values stage by merging the layers --values -Group[shape second character] just like above --final touches --effects --light/shadows --color --sketch[I slowly erase it during values stage by merging the layers --values Ofcourse inside the char groups you can make other shape groups for accesories or w/e you want.I would recommend to watch one of Webags videos to actually understand what I'm saying, if you're interested.
@Sterling Archer Hmmm, depends what kind of animation you want to do. If you wanna go frame by frame animation wich takes "a bit of time", you definetly need to start with basic rules of drawing, after you're decent enough with these, go ahead and break the rules. I, will try to start learning more after effects for animation, wich is not frame by frame for animated scenes.Wich is "simpler" than frame by frame.Plus Spine or Dragonbones(free) for character animation. I asume you wanna do something like a novel? If so prolly the second part makes more sense.Maybe if you throw in there Live2D... There are many things and decisions that I don't have the answer yet for myself xD Artschool is a great place to learn the fundamentals, but plenty of artist do think nowadays it's a bit useless. As you can focus from home to learn what you want pretty much for free over youtube. As of the software itself. If I'm not wrong in Clip Studio Paint you can do animation too, frame by frame animation. Not sure about it tho. Imo.Just try deciding on what you wanna do.You won't be able to do it all, I learned that the hard way. Depends on the kind of animation. As a comic artist it wouldn't be hard to learn frame by frame animation, since you draw the same thing multiple times, it's extremly time consuming, but it can get amazing results. If you're interested in frame by frame animation I would recommend watching some videos of: ruclips.net/channel/UCQSskW1S07KnC3m91hEgFOw - Jesse J. Jones ruclips.net/channel/UC4Qvpti1dS1KKC7PLyLl__g - BaM Animation ruclips.net/channel/UCBZUcC_0ktWqj_CJi2w3-QQ - Howard Wimshurst
I'm not the best artist, but something that has helped me a lot, while taking a lot more time, but saving a lot of headaches: name your layers. Name them based off of what they are. (I work in Krita) I do a super basic just getting the pose down "pre-sketch", and then I make another layer for my sketch or "revised sketch". I make another layer for my line art, and then under that I create "clipping group". This is pretty much a folder that you can set to have all of your layers clip to the bottom layer (make sure to turn on alpha lock for new layers!). I name each layer within that group, simple things, like "hair", "hair shading", "skin", "extra details", etc. This is a lot easier for me, especially because my work isn't super super detailed like the maker of this video (I'm still kind of an amateur). Thanks for reading this, hope I helped!
Also, if you are curious, I use the $50 Gaomon M10K 2018 model, and it is AMAZING for its price. To be fair I haven't really had anything to compare it to, as it is my first drawing tablet, but I do recommend it 👍
THANK YOU!! So many videos are terrible at teaching beginners how to use these sort of tips and leave me confused and frustrated. This was aclear, easy to understand and shows everything by example and it helped SO much.
One thing that I’m suffering with: When I draw art in my sketchbook and import it into ibs paint x *and I forget to change the layer and end up drawing on the photo I imported ;-;*
HAHAHA once I merged my sketch layer and my final layer together and I couldn't press the undo button so minutes of my life were wasted I could not for the life of me fix it
One thing that drastically boosted my workflow was switching from a intuos tablet to a cintiq, the intuos was great and all but being able to see your drawing as you make it just feels amazing and makes drawing far more fun.
Do the Crayola marker challenge! I’m a broke artist and I have to use cheap markers so it would be great to see if someone as skilled and refined with markers as you are could create good art with Crayolas. It would also be a good comparison of the two in how they work with the appropriate techniques like using a Pentel water brush and even trying to blend them like you would with Copics
yo, it's true tho. XD Me: *is halfway through drawing and in the zone* Windows: you thought thot (procedes to have a seizure and delete my will to live)
I know this is kind of old, but I needed this, specially the lineart part, I knew I felt something kind off when trying to do smooth lines in Photoshop! It's just so weird transitioning from traditional art to digital art, but with these tips I feel more motivated :>
As a (super super super) beginner in digital art I have no words to express how much I appreciate this video! I got my Intuos recently because I need to learn for my career's sake, but got petrified when I realized it is not at all as to draw/paint traditionally. So, from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU!
9:38 I thought I understood how to use these and BOY WAS I WRONG. Going over the Layer Blending Styles was insanely helpful! Thank you so much! I learned a lot from this video and I don't even consider myself a beginner lmao
Thanks a lot! My first drawing tablet arrives tomorrow and I feel like my results are already gonna be 10x better thanks to some of these tips. I've done a bit of digital art before but I always had problems with really simple stuff, I pretty much just didn't know how to utilize any functions more complex than what you'd find in MS Paint. This video really showed me how to overcome some of those super basic issues I had with digital art. Especially stuff like clipping masks, layer blending styles, or the liquefy tool which I wouldn't have even thought to try.

For about 13 years now, I have been a self-taught artist who lived on a farm and didn't have enough money to afford anything professional or recommended like going to art school. I still wouldn't go to art school, simply because I don't feel I need it. Digital art is still a completely new aspect to me even if i have painted a few exceptional portraits that surprised even myself-- but perhaps that's because I spent so long doing digital art that I picked up the skills that I could easily transfer over into my digital work. I'm still learning, of course, and I will even say that this video has taught me a few things, also, like the lasso too and how to fill in your line art with flat colours. I've been a fan of your work for a while now, Laovaan, and I thank you for making these tutorials and speed paints!

HOWEVER, traditional sketches alone might already be enough to make me regret not touching the medium since middle school lmao
I guess this really means we have to go back and forth both mediums from time to time, eh? xD
@@risukual same 😂 I use procreate and to undo I can just tap the screen with my index and middle finger, and when I went back to traditional art I tapped the paper when I made a mistake 💀

But this taught me about things I didn't even know existed or know that I'd have really wanted.
this video made me less afraid of trying painting :') somehow you made it just simple enough to make it less intimidating, thank you!

For any prospective digital artists out there, listen to the advice on the screenless tablet. It really helps you to connect the motion of the pen and the screen.
literally just learned what lock transparency does... i am so sad for my past self
Can you explain that please?

I swear that I'm smashing like button in this video. Thank you for always been so sincere in all your videos. Everybody who's starting in digital painting should watch this.
One recomendation for those who battle with learning how to use a digital tablet, one thing i did was to use the tablet for everything, and i mean everything, a tablet is basically a replacement for a mouse so i use it to navigate through the internet copy archives, etc, the only thing i didnt do with the tablet is play videogames, this is because a tablet works diferently to a mouse, instead of dragging it through the screen you levitate it over the surface with the surface of the tablet representing the screen to scale, this can take a while to get used to, i personaly did this and in a couple of days i was already able to do some solid drawings and quickly got accostumed to the feel of the tablet, but i havent tested this with no one but myself
Also another recomendation is to keep some drawing pencils and a sketch book nearby and keep practicing tradicional art every now and then, digital and traditional are similar and a lot of the skills and muscle memory are intercheangable, but both also are diferent skills with diferent levels and if you over train yourself in one you can literaly forgot how to do the other, so keep your skills sharp by sometimes doing a drawing in traditional

I’m only halfway through and this has already been a massively helpful video! I love how succinct you are, my biggest pet peeve is a video that spends half the time beating around the bush, but you get the point right away. Great stuff!
I’m that one artist that uses folders and name all my layers bc it irks me when I don’t.
i would relate but i always get so caught up that i forget to name it and spend an hour naming all my layers again
Devil Grey Thing is, I feel exactly like that but the program I use can’t name layers.
I'm that one artist who doesn't name anything and has to hide and unhide all of my layers to find the one I'm looking for 😂
@@detectiveryuzaki6475 i relate
Finally I'm not alone
Tip that I use: when sketching make different sections different colors:e.g: hair =purple, face =orange arm=Red etc.
Make sure to keep them all in one layer and they have to be highly saturated so you don't confuse it with the line art or color blocking layer, lower the opacity on the sketch obviously.
Hopefully it helps you.
For someone like me who is just starting out, this is a real game changer!

Your drawing skills are just out of this world!
I'd combine cliping mask method with the one used by Webang group mask(forgot the exact name), wich is imo more flexible than than cliping mask alone.I tend to use rarely cliping masks, I just prepare the piece with group masks(wich takes a few years xD).
The layers structure would look something like this(for me):
Group[Shape of all the characters]
-Group[shape first character]
--final touches
--effects
--light/shadows
--color
--sketch[I slowly erase it during values stage by merging the layers
--values
-Group[shape second character] just like above
--final touches
--effects
--light/shadows
--color
--sketch[I slowly erase it during values stage by merging the layers
--values
Ofcourse inside the char groups you can make other shape groups for accesories or w/e you want.I would recommend to watch one of Webags videos to actually understand what I'm saying, if you're interested.
There are many things and decisions that I don't have the answer yet for myself xD
Artschool is a great place to learn the fundamentals, but plenty of artist do think nowadays it's a bit useless.
If you're interested in frame by frame animation I would recommend watching some videos of:
ruclips.net/channel/UCQSskW1S07KnC3m91hEgFOw - Jesse J. Jones
ruclips.net/channel/UC4Qvpti1dS1KKC7PLyLl__g - BaM Animation
ruclips.net/channel/UCBZUcC_0ktWqj_CJi2w3-QQ - Howard Wimshurst
