If I remember the adverts correctly Ouija was marketed as a mind reading family game . We were all much more innocent then and any references to seances and the like were light hearted and revealed the ' psychic ' as a fake .
I think the main crux of the situation is that the game went from a pleasent parlour game of self discovery to a game associated with evil spirits, almost overnight.

Re: the existence or not of a spirit realm. I didn't believe it but when my sister was terminally ill ( she was in another country) one morning I woke with an overwhelming grief which I couldn't shake. I later felt a sudden presence next to me (right up close) which had hold of my arm. Then a strong sense of joy and freedom emanated from this presence. I turned to look at it and saw a burnished orb. The presence disappeared but I made a note of the time because I was sure that was the spirit of my sister. When my niece rang later, I knew it was sad news and , yes, my sister had died at around the same time ( slightly before) I felt that presence. Time difference was taken into account. I think the popularity of it in the US is more to do with the extremely religious nature of the country compared to other Western countries. If you don’t believe in spirits the game becomes just an interesting experiment in subconscious mental suggestion.

Why would spirits be attracted to this piece of cardboard exclusively, why don't they use their ghostly influence to spell out words on a scrabble board, or Countdown on the TV, that would really give people the willies.
