Peugeot Rifter: The Ultimate Family Car?

  • It might not be the most fashionable car on the road, but when it comes to family-friendly practicality there's little to beat the Peugeot Rifter. In this latest CarGurus review, Chris Knapman examines whether it really is the ultimate family car.
    Written review: www.cargurus.co.uk/research/P...
    Pros
    Hugely practical cabin
Long model has space for seven
    Excellent value for money
    Cons
Entry-level models are a bit basic
Lacks the image and style of an SUV
Connected services require a subscription after three years
    The CarGurus verdict
The Rifter might not be the most luxurious people carrier on the market, or the best to drive, but it absolutely nails its core responsibility of fitting as many people as possible in comfort, with all of their stuff, too. Good luck trying to do this in an SUV or crossover without spending a considerable amount more. When it comes to sheer practicality, the Rifter is very hard to beat for the price. Bear in mind, however, that if you’re looking to buy new then you're now limited to electric power only.

    I wish the Peugeot Rifter comes to Australia. I absolutely love it. I deal for taking trips to the beach and stay overnight for a few days. The design is very appealing and seem to be of brilliant quality too. Put you bike in and two dogs, some sleeping gear and go and have fun:}

I was really pleased with my 7-seater (series 3-type) Rifter that I bought and afterwards realised it was the long-wheelbase version, although it was not advertised as such by Carshop. (This was not immediately obvious with no other shorter version to compare it with). I then took it home and found it would not fit either of my garages!
It was too tall to fit either garage without removing the roof bars. (This is only possible with a thin Torx key, not a socket set).
It was also too long to fit the shorter garage and then close the garage door unless it was reversed into the completely empty garage until the bumper rested on the back wall.
Let the buyer beware. This is a BIG vehicle. My previous MPV's, (series 1 and 2 Citroen Berlingos), fitted my garages without any problems. N.B. The latest series 3 Berlingos are similarly BIG in size.

You can buy a thing called a tape measure. it allows you to measure the length of things, like garages or cars in this case.
It is portable and you can take it with you when you go to view a vehicle.
It will let you know if the vehicle you are viewing will fit in your garage.

I would buy a Burper in a heartbeat, if/when PSA decide to fit a proper supportive drivers seat, not the uncomfortable budgie perch currently fitted. BTW I actually like the upright driving position, and since I ud be opting for the EAT 8 automatic, and the diesel too, the gear lever position is a moot point. So other than the drivers seat, this is, for me, the perfect all round, unpretentious family vehicle.

Good review in itself but really you also need to have the long version and 8 speed auto plus diesel & petrol options so viewers have a full view of range. For me long version with 8 speed auto 130 diesel with 3rd row seats removed would be the best config, massive boot and easy driving, nothing exciting but extremely practicable. I understand that Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall (Combo Life) all use the same 8" screen in the mid to high models, Citroen have weird sickly colour seats and Vauxhall don't/didn't have the 130 diesel in long version which makes no sense. 130 petrol coming later ... List prices crazy, expect you would loose £8K on leaving the dealers! Best wait for the new thing buzz to die down then buy a pre reg in a year or two.

Nice review. If I was in the market for something like this, I’d go with the sister car - the Citroen Berlingo. Couple of reasons. First, I think Citroen’s design language suits the boxy nature of what is essentially a van. Second, you wouldn’t have to put up with Peugeot’s i-Cockpit, which I think is still too much of a gimmick.

    • @DonDixit
