  • Why this practical MPV wins the space race
The 2020 Citroen Berlingo is one of the most practical MPVs you can buy, particularly when it's specified in seven-seat XL form. In this CarGurus UK review, Rebecca Jackson looks in detail at what makes the Berlingo such an appealing option - and examines some of the drawbacks of van-based MPVs, too.

Why do most of the people who test these seem to think everything has to handle like a sports car? They are a work vehicle and very good at it. I have the Peugeot partner and it is really good at what it was built for.

Your video is probably the one that finished convincing me of buying one.
I have exactly the same one as in the video (left hand driving, different color and differente boot-no oppening rear window).
And it performs exactly as said in the video.
I've had for one year now, have mad my own removable kit for camping-touring in it, and I am still as pleased as the first day.
Great and very truthful video, thank you so much for the inspiration one year ago.

I've got one. 1.2 in perfect 90% of the time. Very zippy with quite a quick low down punch for getting away from the lights. I've managed 1000+km in a day to Austria with a full roofbox and 4 bikes on the back. It does struggle fully loaded (diesels may be better) when going up steep hills that you get on the Autobahn around Munich and into Austria. But, it still manages it, you adapt your driving. I have the XL with 7 seats which are awesome. My kids 10 and 12 fit perfectly and are happy to do a distance in them, so we can take grandma and grandpa as well. Huge boot and best value for the size. Just had a service and is was 170euros for 25000km. I thought it was a bargain. Sliding doors absolutely awesome with kids. Looks nice with tinted rear windows which is good for the kids not getting blinded by the son. Was going to buy a Caddy, but this beats it on value and performance for the price I was prepared to pay. It is not a sports car, but then you're not buying it for that. Good honest, simple and effective transport. Facilitates life. I would recommend one. The only slight downside was ours was late because of the demand and the dealer and Citroen service is a bit crap. I won't tell you the carry on to get our car, its too long and boring. Hopefully Citroen are getting it better now. Like I say, last service was efficient and cheap.

Berlingo’s make great mini camper vans. You can get great conversions or even just removable boot jumps for them. There is a surprising amount of room inside.

We have 3 young children and my wife is pregnant with our fourth baby. Purchasing a larger car has become a necessity for our family. Our first choice was the style and beauty of the Peugeot 5008, as it is a large car with 7 seats. But to our surprise, when we went to see him in a store, we tried to visualize all the children inside with their backpacks, bicycles and baby stroller. It simply wouldn't fit. So that's when we came across the Citroen Berlingo. Definitely the best choice for our large family. The fact that the last seats slide forward even with people sitting on them gives us more luggage space, which can accommodate the baby stroller and the children's small bicycles. Great car! Great video review!

I recently swapped from a Seat Alhambra 184 dsg lux to a Vauxhall combo life 130 auto elite petrol i expected to be very miffed about the drop in power but to my amazement i am not. I know there's a 50 bhp plus torq difference but i went for the smaller combo it suited my needs and with the lighter car the power difference was not so pronounced. I moved over from diesel not due to any PC reasons but because the amount of miles i now cover it just didn't warrant a diesel and i didn't have problems with the DPF filter on the seat but the amount of miles i will do now it might have become a problem. I am very happy with the engine in mine and the 8 speed auto. i have only just swapped and covered just over 300 miles and i don't miss the Seat at all. I looked at the sister cars to mine and liked what you got on the elite and what kits comes with it and because cars have moved on the combo comes with more safety kits and toys than the seat did when it was new. I don't regret my choice and i would recommend having a look at all three versions of the car/van what ever you want to call it.

Beware the low list price. A lot of the time heavy depreciation means these are no cheaper to own than other mpv's.
The only gain in space over something like an Alhambra is in head room and lets be honest even if you're 6'4'' you're not going to have a problem in an Alhambra.
The boot behind the seats is also larger in the Seat with the drop down available below floor height, the seats fold flat, all are sliding which allows better configuration for larger/smaller people and its a lot nicer inside. Obviously the driving experience is night and day and the performance may only be a bit better on paper but throw seven people and some luggage in each and see what happens to those numbers.
I can fully understand buying a van based mpv if you need something larger (Spacetourer for example) where you get a genuine bump up in space, much larger boot and the possibility of seating for eight but in this size its really hard to make a case for these things apart from low list price and soft ride.
If you're thinking about one of these take a long look at the Spacetourer first. Its much larger inside, still fits in all normal carparks and spaces, will likely hold its money better and isn't that much more in the first place.

I have previously owned series 1 and series 2 Berlingos. Due to the newly introduced 'clean air zone' regulations in my city I bought in haste a, (7-seater), series 3 Peugeot Rifter Long, a very similar vehicle to the Berlingo XL. Unlike my previous Berlingos I now cannot get it into either of my two garages without removing the roof bars and backing the van hard against the back wall.
Please beware that these latest vehicles are considerably larger externally than their two predecessors.

Good review thanks. Am looking from a mobility perspective as need to carry an electric wheelchair, & fishing equipment but being relatively young I think I'm going to go with the Rifter GT Line for it's nicer style and comfort for similar space, and also very importantly the lay flat seat capabilities of the Rifter compared to the cumbersome method of the Berlingo seat adjustment. There's a kind of clumsiness to the Berlingo in comparison with the Rifter I.m.o.

@@MartinLV. BS. Diesels will always be more efficient than petrol engines. Otherwise you would have petrol powered ships, locomotives etc. In fact, diesel is also cleaner in practice, especially when using paraffinic fuel.

@@6ettinold - Good luck with pulling that 35 year old "bird". I'd say go for it :-))...
Only joshing. I know that "vans" like this are good gear shifters. I used to have a Delica some years ago. Used it daily. But it's main use was for carting my fishing gear to inaccessible places that you'd never get to with 2wd. But the Delica was a tad different as it had Mitsubishis stunning 4wd running gear which made off roading a real doddle. Sadly, not so much with these vans though. Which is a shame.

6ettinold I am very impressed with the car I am not sure what extras you would get between the three models. Looking at the Peugeot top of the range it’s very well equipped but the Vauxhall’s elite model got all the bits I need. All three models the underpinnings are the same it’s just what dress you need the car to come in to make it suit your needs.
