    Lauren, I've been "playing" guitar for a long time (on and off). My brother taught me a long time ago. He had taken lessons for about 14 years when we were kids and I picked up on it as a teen. Way back then, we played on stage and really enjoyed playing. (I purposely am not revealing my age until the end of my story...LOL). As a rhythm guitarist I never really caught onto what I missed over the years and the longer I didn't play it got worse! I was a horrible strummer!!!! Your lessons are invaluable now as I pick the guitar back up. My brother has since passed away and you are taking over as my guide. Now at 70, I am learning all over again.... the right way.... Thanks.

      hi David i've learned how to play the guitar in my younger years, in my 30's; i have jsut resumed playing now that i'm 59 and i absolutely love and plays quite well. Lauren's the best teacher by the way, she really is and a hit for us all guitar-lovers. I've learned a lot from her than from any others around on you tubed :)))

      @@FemaleObserver anyone who can make simple strumming (for a novice) sound dynamically interesting must be a challenge. Knowing the subject and instrument is one thing, but I would say empathy/connection with the viewers is also flooding through these lessons. Respect!

    I'm what I'd consider to be an intermediate guitarst. I've found as I've started to play shows the last few years, though, that my rhythm isn't nearly as good as I thought it was. I'm self taught and never really learned to count as I'm playing. As I've started to try to count along to some simple rhythms I've realized that over the years I've learned to feel rhythm in a pretty weird way. It's okay for some things, but when things get challenging I have a hard time having a consistent rhythm. I didn't necessarily learn anything I didn't already know throughout this video series, but I've enjoyed practicing my rhythm along with these videos. It's easy to let your ego convince you that you don't need to practice this stuff, but I've started working on counting simple rhythms like this and counting along to some 12 bar blues and I feel like I can already tell a huge difference in my rhythm. Thanks for the great, high quality videos!
    Also to anyone out there practicing their rhythm... if you have the means I HIGHLY recommend recording yourself playing along to a click track. It's a very humbling experience but if you want that studio musician quality rhythm you can get some instant visual feedback on how close you are to hitting the click!

At the moment my fingers are falling off so sore so taking a break as I cant press anything and I could do lots of crime as I have no fingerprints ... Hey Lauren! My experience is unusual ..I'm a multi instrumentalist- and 24 yrs -advanced player/performer. (10 instruments- Irish session trained, ear primarily, read music too)
    18 mo ago, started guitar... gone solo. Advanced rapidly. By week 3 I already had a full grasp of strumming/rhythm attributed to my bodhran playing ( loose wrist + attack method) by month 3, I was flatpicking...
    I'm progressing TOO rapidly!!! Does that make sense?? I know Im losing a lot of finesse, and theory/fretboard knowledge is lacking...which is my hindrance.
    Kinda like being able to do Algebra/Geometry but not getting how to do 12×15=
    What would you recommend to back my train up?
    I'm playing solo gigs now, doing well.. gaining a following, playing with advanced musicians - 30 yrs+ players.. and most are helpful...but there are some that are skeptical/jealous... thinking I've been playing 6-8 yrs now... how to deal with this?? Ugh.
    Have you had students like me? The student you show something to...and the just "get it" by osmosis?? And just DO it?
    Not trying to sound full of myself... but ?? ...how else can I describe it?
    BTW, Mom was a classical pianist with the BSO, and graduate of McGill Conservatory- PhD musicology..

    • @LaurenBateman
      @LaurenBateman  3 года назад +1

      That's amazing. Yes, I've had students who have progressed quickly. That's wonderful and is a very rare thing. Embrace it. I would definitely go back and focus on your fundamentals and improving upon the things you feel like you are weaker in.

    • @lowellirish
      @lowellirish 3 года назад

      @@LaurenBateman thanks...yes. I am. Starting to incorporate Travis Picking now, as well as slash and Barre chords. I started back into music late- at 33... with pennywhistle. An impulse buy...and to keep me occupied camping, etc. 25 yrs later, and I have amassed oh... 30 whistles? 🤣 Its taken me places where I'd never dreamed... playing on the pro circuit. Hanging with Solas and Gaelic Storm, Darby OGill, and meeting Liz Carroll, and so many more...
      Now guitar! lol...
      I've hit my goal though. Learn 1 instrument every 3 yrs. Not to be a pro player... but accomplished enough... So Ive got: whistle, Irish Flute, bodhran, conga, djembe, tar, mandolin, fiddle (Irish, Scottish, New England), Appalachian Dulcimer, Strumstick, clawhammer banjo, Native American flute, Highland Hornpipe... and guitar. And Tenor vocals.
      Thanks for all you do!!!
