Hungry fighters usually are winning fighters. Not a huge drop off at that point among top 5 heavyweights. In his prime, Tyson won because he was very quick, powerful and hungry, despite being short. He had that edge! The older he got, he had success in the ring but also troubles in his life. And the taller, stronger, hungrier men with jabs became his demons. By then, Tyson has also lost his "edge." In this fight, Rahman wasn't much below Lewis in talent and he was much more determined and focused. The result was actually rather predictable after a few rounds when Lewis looked like he wasn't the same boxer. He had lost his edge, too.
I remember watching this live. Although it seemed like an easy win for Lewis I noticed how sluggish he was and what appeared to be some weight gain. I didn't think he would win; I didn't expect that knockout either.
Did he claim lucky? That was a perfect right cross. Right under the glove and past the elbow Ina straight line to the point of Lewis chin. Rahman also was looking at his target while Lewis was pivoting. Anyone who has taken any boxing class knows that was a perfect punch at the right time. The only better would have been a left hook if he was closer to Lewis

Mike Tyson in his prime would have destroyed Lewis. Destroyed! Tyson was a perfect boxing machine in his prime. The strength and quickness for his weight was unmatched!
Mike Tyson woulda broke thru an beat that Lennox Lewis that turned up for this fight ... but Prime Lewis beats Tyson every time .. Tyson is great .an it aint all hype .. But the fact he is THE BEATLES of boxing .. the most famous boxer around etc ... dont mean he the best ... LEWIS an HOLLYFIELD had his number ..tyson proberbly the 3rd best of the era ... but theres TUA,MORRISON,BOWE an MERCER in the mix .. that could be in the running for the 3rd place aswell .. all them of them an TYSON were a step down from lewis .. he was better by a distance ,,, so theres Lewis at the top of the pile as he beat an could beat everyone an hollyfield 2nd cos he beat could beat pretty much everyone apart from Lewis ... then 3rd place .. theres the likes of ,MORRISON,TYSON,TUA,BOWE,MERCER etc .. Tyson prob the best outta that bunch .. shame he didnt fight them an RAHMAN, old FOREMAN etc .. he fourght RUDDUCK,BRUNO,GOLOTA an alot of credable guys he the only guy ever to knock out LARRY HOLMES .but most of the best guys around in the era were guys that tyson didnt fight .. i think TYSON v TUA, MORRISON, BOWE, MERCER, RAHMAN an OLD FOREMAN woulda been interesting fights
beestonpoet I think all of New Zealand would have loved to have seen Tyson vs Tua. Tua was very underrated during his prime and would have given Tyson a run for his money
beestonpoet Mike did ok leading up against other opponents leading up to Lennox Lewis, Mike caused issues for Lennox in training in prime. The issue was in his late 30s Mike tried to use head movement etc which worked in his prime he couldnt get close and he was a shell of himself. While, Mike may have beaten him in his prime he fought taller people and won but lennox lewis kept clinching him and pushing him and it was tough. He still had a great career regained title after prison (which i didnt think he raped desiree) plus after evander holyfield bite he slowly came back to fight for the title against lewis at age 36. He said so himself in the documentary he wasnt in any shape to beat anyone but he knew it was a good pay day and he needed the money, i think if mike was better prepared he may have lost but it wouldnt have been as bad as it was he shouldve fought a tune up against another top quality opponent prior to lewis
I've always been fascinated by the mechanics of knockouts. In this case Rahman, by moving to his own left, shortened the bludgeoning right hand that knocked out Lennox Lewis. In this regard his own knockout at the hands of Lewis, in the rematch, bore similar characteristics. Lennox threw a left hook that set up a right hand superbly.
A good example of what can happen if you allow yourself to become preoccupied with other things and don't focus on what is important. A good lesson learned.
I love how at 2:05 foreman predicts the ending. He mentions the jab right hand combo is something LL needs to look out for. It was a 1-2 that hurt lewis then the 5-6 jabs in a row then a right hand.

That's false. Ali clowned and trash talked every fight but still won many of them, just like Lewis won many of his fights. Your statement makes no sense
Dennis deshurley, yeah I'm English and I couldn't stand Lewis, he was an arrogant prick who never had a good word to say about any opponent. I watched one of Bruno's fights, which he won by ko, and Lewis and Gary mason were in the TV studio. Lewis said "I would knock frank Bruno out inside 3 rounds", Mason said " fuck me, that's a brave statement on live television". When Lewis did fight Bruno I was ringside, Bruno was ahead on points and Lewis was blowing like an asthmatic 60 year old until frank got caught and did what he always did and froze. After the fight Lewis showed absolutely no respect for Bruno and said the fight went exactly as he planned. Bollocks, he was in trouble and he knew it. Bruno later won a world title with a points win over macall, who also stopped Lewis. I don't care what anyone says, if Lewis had fought tyson around 88 iron mike would've annihilated him, the tyson Lewis fought was spent, much like the version of ali that lost to trevor birbeck.

@@sambrooks7862 I just read your comments and you are spot on. The Mike Tyson who lost to Lennox Lewis was a shell of the fighter he used to be. Tyson would have also defeated Evander Holyfield and Buster Douglas could have just stayed in his hotel room because the fight would have been over that fast. I was never a Lennox Lewis fan either.

You know..I like Tyson as a Boxer...he is for sure an incredible talent...BUT..when compared to Ali, there are big differences...Ali was able to come out of being out for those years in his prime, and STILL fight the best fighters in the world, and regain the title multiple times...that is the sign of a true champion...I am sorry but longevity, consistency, character, and heart,COUNT for a lot! Sometimes there is an intangible element, that the greatest champions have, that is beyond technique....Ali had this...Tyson as incredible as he was...Didn't...A guy like Muhammad Ali comes along once in a lifetime...Tyson himself, would tell you that!!
And Ali stood up in 15th round after Joe Frazier's scariest left hook with full power got hit him in the face and Ali stood up in 3 seconds....and look at lewis...Man I wonder how great Ali was!!!!
People tend to forget what else was going on at this time. Lennox Lewis was filming his part in a movie at this time (I believe it was Ocean' s 11, but I could be wrong) and did not train in a high altitude climate. This fight took place in South Africa above 5,000 feet elevation. I remember Hasim Rahman talking about getting to South Africa over a month before the fight to get used to the high altitude, while Lennox Lewis didn't get there until a few days before the fight. Since he was filming, he trained at sea level which was a huge mistake. Notice how slow and lethargic he looks while Hasim Rahman looks much fresher. Lewis definitely underestimated Rahman in this fight and he paid for it! Lewis was much more prepared for the second fight, which I believe was in Las Vegas, and you see the results! Had there been a third fight, I believe that Lewis destroys Rahman again!! But it doesn't take away from the fact that Rahman was better prepared for this fight and thus deserved the victory!!

@Idk Idk Lewis was under no obligation to rematch Klitschko. He had already been a long-reigning champion (outside of the Rahman hiccup), earnt enough money to live the rest of his life comfortably and accomplished everything he wanted to as undisputed champion. Plus he was getting old, it was time to retire. The Klitschko brothers had their times as champion, its not like they got cheated.
I'm so happy Lennox got knocked out by this beautiful right hand from Rahman. I have never liked Lewis, he had no head movement, no footwork and no rhythm at all. .. all them of them an TYSON were a step down from lewis .. he was better by a distance ,,, so theres Lewis at the top of the pile as he beat an could beat everyone an hollyfield 2nd cos he beat could beat pretty much everyone apart from Lewis ... then 3rd place .. theres the likes of ,MORRISON,TYSON,TUA,BOWE,MERCER etc .. Tyson prob the best outta that bunch .. shame he didnt fight them an RAHMAN, old FOREMAN etc .. he fourght RUDDUCK,BRUNO,GOLOTA an alot of credable guys he the only guy ever to knock out LARRY HOLMES .but most of the best guys around in the era were guys that tyson didnt fight .. i think TYSON v TUA, MORRISON, BOWE, MERCER, RAHMAN an OLD FOREMAN woulda been interesting fights
beestonpoet
I think all of New Zealand would have loved to have seen Tyson vs Tua. Tua was very underrated during his prime and would have given Tyson a run for his money
STFU
beestonpoet Mike did ok leading up against other opponents leading up to Lennox Lewis, Mike caused issues for Lennox in training in prime.
Foreman "Lennox stops throwing his jab, he can walk into some right hand"
Literally that.
Rahman, knocked that grin off of Lewis's face with that knockout ...

To further add to this there was a report that came out a,few years ago that Mike tyson was spotted in two different states on the same night and these states where far apart. Wow! Really enjoyed the nostalgia brought by the HBO boxing introduction.
Lewis laughed at him seconds befor being knocked out. Never cared for him.
@@sambrooks7862Also the way Lewis spoke after Klitschko fight was totally disrespectful, couldn't be humble. Acted like Klitschko didn't stand a chance and then retired without giving Klitschko another chance like he's got something to hide.

@@sambrooks7862 I just read your comments and you are spot on. The Mike Tyson who lost to Lennox Lewis was a shell of the fighter he used to be. If Lennox Lewis had fought the real "Iron Mike Tyson" from the mid to late 80's (trained by Kevin Rooney) he would have gotten knocked out.

Figured he had a glass chin and probably will end up losing fights when people got more aggressive on him... to the contrary he got better and seemed practically invincible at times,,, He closed out his career being the best HW of the era.
The only thing he was doing throughout his career was taking advantage of his bodyshape. This is not boxing. He's lucky he did't fight a prime Tyson or even Holyfield. @Hindsight 2020 - I am a big Lewis fan, but I think you could add his name to Foreman and Sonny Liston as fighters Ali would have no chance of beating (and we all saw what happened then). Lewis' size would give Ali trouble, but then Lewis never fought anyone with Ali's intelligence, speed or toughness or skill.
FACT
@Studentofsweetscience - All Ali did was beat Liston twice, Frazier twice and Foreman. All considered all time top 8. Of course there was also another 8 or so top 50, but that's nothing I guess.
