I was a junior in high school in 1985 and my father and I watched that fight together. We were going nuts and at the end of round one we found ourselves hanging on to one another in front of the tv ! We were so stoked after that fight that we stayed up till 2am. I miss my pop!
R.I.P. To PoPs!!!!1
Amen
And the question is .... who won ? And did they have any energy left for the remaining rounds ?
I miss your pop too the way you just told that story!
Hagler knocked Hearns out in the third round. Hearns broke his hand in the first round as well.
"There was no boxing at all, just fighting." Epic quote
....AND "This is still the first round!!" This fight earned great quotes.
so wrong, there was a lot of boxing in there.
IT WAS WARFARE!!!!!
In my opinion this is the most exciting boxing match of all time,,it was an all out war
@@dagan8659 Yeah it was as technical as it was violent, calculated as it was courageous. A fight where one mistake or moment of doubt both men had the ability to shut each other off, staying focused while missiles scream past your ears.
If the question is "What's so great about boxing?" then the answer is "Hagler v. Hearns RD1"
For me, it was the golden era of boxing. Thomas Hearn, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, all legends. With these two especially, we all knew we were going to get a brawl. Thank you Marvelous Marvin and Hitman for the show and the memories. RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
It was definitely the greatest middle weight class of all time, I mean Boob Boom Mancini, John The Beast Magabi, Wilfred Benitez, Iran Barkley, Michael Nunn, Julian Jackson, and another Italian cat whose name eludes me. No other weight class in history can compare to what was in the middleweight division in the 80's.
@@34blackula I believe you might be thinking about Nino Benvenutti.
Definitely the Golden Era, across multiple weight divisions, and you didn't have to wait 2 years for a title defense. Most of em fought everyone that came along.

@@aidan2139 no such thing as "real fighting". A fight is as real as it gets
@@kykise1395 And? Boxing =/= Fight keep coping
I can imagine them both going back to their corners and both coaches saying "What the fuck are you doing?" 😂
Just two of the greats standing and banging baby
Maybe Emmanuelle Steward. In Hagler's corner at least; this is the Plan
@John Loughlin Hearns unfortunately, could not
Hagler coaches probably wouldn’t give a fuck, man had a chin made of fkg titanium and his heart was easily the best in boxing history beside Arturo Gatti
I was just about to leave the exact comment.
I just came here after hearing the terrible news. RIP Marvellous Marvin Hagler. You were one of the greats!!!
Rip yell
MARVELOUS.
Very sad... he was such a great fighter, one of the best of all time. Just such a tremendous athlete and tough fighter.
Same here. RIP warrior.
Nobody telling Marvin you ain't coming in these pearly gates.
And to think that we got to watch all these great fights, on TV, for free. It didn't get any better than this......
Sad everything is ppv now
This fight was a PPV. I know because we ordered it back in the day.
@@shadowsayer1516 It was a great fight for sure.
The fact those men were still standing after taking those blows just shows how tough they really were. Being able to fight is one thing but being to take a punch and keep coming is another. RIP Marvin Hagler.

Round 1:
The PROBLEM in today's world is that the BIBLICAL GOSPEL and way of SALVATION are hardly known and are not plainly and clearly taught. And the KING JAMES BIBLE declares that if this gospel is hid you then you are lost ( 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 KJV). The majority of "pastors", "preachers", " Christians", and other "Men of God" do not even know where the GOSPEL is found plainly in scriptures or tell you simply and fully how to be SAVED, but will have you buy a never ending amount of books and unless things and will lead you down rabbit holes to nowhere that never tell you plainly and simply how to be SAVED or the whole GOSPEL , they only make merchandise out of you ( 2 Peter 2:1 - 3 KJV ). This is an ALARMING, SHAMEFUL , and GRIEVOUS problem...
Plain and simple the GOSPEL is: JESUS CHRIST DIED for our SINS , He was BURIED, and he He ROSE again the THIRD day ( 1 Corinthians 15:1- 4 KJV). NOTHING ELSE. This is the single utmost IMPORTANT thing you need to know in LIFE. Because knowing and putting your FAITH and BELIEF in it ONLY, is what SAVES you from your SINS and an ETERNITY in HELL.
The BIBLICAL way of to be SAVED is to:
• Sincerely REPENT ( feel SORRY/ GRIEF/ SORROW / PAIN) for your own SINS:
( 2 CORINTHIANS 7 : 9 - 10 KJV, & PSALM 34 : 18 KJV, PSALM 38 : 17- 18 KJV, & MARK 1: 14 - 15 & 2 : 17 KJV).
• Sincerely BELIEVE, TRUST, and put your FAITH in in ONLY the GOSPEL of JESUS CHRIST the SON of GOD to SAVE you from your SINS:
• Sincerely call upon the name of the LORD to be SAVED:
( LUKE 18 : 13 - 14 KJV, & 1 JOHN 1 : 9 KJV, JOB 33 : 29 - 30 KJV, & ROMANS 10:8 - 13 KJV).
REPENTANCE ( GODLY SORROW ), BELIF of the GOSPEL, and calling upon the name of the LORD all 3 go hand in hand together and all 3 happen naturally. No one is PROMISED tomorrow, MANKIND is NOT going to make going to make the WORLD get any BETTER, and TIME is SHORT;
GOD'S HORRIFIC JUDGMENT is quickly APPROACHING this WICKED EVIL world to DESTROY it, and the ONLY way to be SAVED from DESTRUCTION is to SINCERELY REPENT, SINCERELY BELIEVE the GOSPEL of JESUS CHRIST, and SINCERELY call UPON the name of the LORD for MERCY and SALVATION! Hagler and Hearns stepped into the ring and said, "To hell with the coaches' instructions and all the preparations. If we die, we die!"
It seems that way, but Hagler confessed that his corner convinced him to fight this way (attacking Hearns) and perhaps exposing himself to a tremendous counterattack blow because they knew that Hearns had neither good defense nor good jaw
@@DanielSuarez-jq6tl
Not to mention that Hearns was known for turning his back on opponents and that was a bad sign of him being outboxed.
That ref worked harder in that first round than most refs work a whole fight

Great comment. To set up and throw the bomb over and over again...both guys. I love watching Hearns in his fights because he does that time and time again...set up, and throw the bomb. It takes a ton of effort and energy. Hagler was just incredible as well. Amazing chin, tough as nails, heavy, heavy hitter.
I don't think anyone can truly understand how brutal that was. They were at the limits of what human beings are capable of. There will NEVER be a round of boxing like that again. Two all time greats giving it absolutely everything.

Broke my heart when I heard Marvelous Marvin Hagler passed away a few months ago. Hagler remains my all time favorite fighter and I have been a boxing fan for over 50 years. My old army buddy Pepper Roach and I drove up to Boston from Ft. Bragg in 81 to see his brother Freddie Roach and Hagler fight in the Boston Garden. It was Hagler's first title defense after he demolished Alan Minter in London in the 3rd round and won the middleweight title. Freddie fought on the under card and I met him that night and also his trainer, the late great Eddie Futch. So it was a great night for me. Both Freddie and Hagler won their fights that night. Hagler destroyed a very tough and game Fulgencio Oblemejias that night in the 8th round. It was brutal as Pepper and I were sitting close to ringside. I'll never forget that night. Hagler then KO'd him again in 5 rounds a year later. I also watched this Hagler vs. Hearns fight in the Fayetteville, NC Auditorium during the old closed circuit days before pay per view. I liked Tommy Hearns also but knew Hagler would be too much for him. I was never a betting man, but several of my army buddies in my unit were sure Hearns would win, even after I explained how Hagler was just too strong of a boxer-puncher for Tommy. They would not listen and all wanted to bet me so I could not turn down their free money as I knew it would be easy money in my pocket and I was right. They all came up to me the next day and paid up too and told me it went just like I said it would. It was 400.00 total from all of them, four guys. That was a lot of money to me back then in 85 and still is now actually. Well, thats my story. RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler, you were the greatest fighter ever!
Dude you are amazing

At 57. I've watched so many fights of so many greats. I still smile every time I watch this spectical of great hearted warriors. A special joy to be appreciated.
yeah man, Im the same age as you, we grew up on theis stuff , hagler hearns sugar ray, and then came tyson.......just brilliant brilliant stuff.
You ve watched a lot of fights . . . okay? Have you been in any or actually done anything having to do with fighting or are you just a fanboy that idolizes fighting?
SPENCE AND PORTER TRIED... THURMAN AND GARCIA TOO
@@4sername fanboy yeah wtf ,who are u Charlie zelinof
Now we get to see the legendary battles
This was an era of "Huge" events....People weren't walking around with their face buried in their phones...They weren't preoccupied on their laptops and dating sites...These were stellar days...You went to "real" places and met "real" people... I watched this fight live on tv...The build up was epic...The fight was epic, possibly the best few rounds in boxing history...You will rarely find two warriors of this caliber face off with such skill and bravado, coupled with warrior spirits and displayed in unparalleled fashion....To quote half of Dickens, "These were the Best of Times."....RIP Marvin Hagler and thank you Tommy the Hitman, for bringing it all and leaving it all in the ring...I stand and say bravo gentlemen...Bravo!!!!!
I say there's has NEVER been a fiercer first round than this one.
Mike Tyson was laying people out in the first round 😂
may _ lay trucker this was more savage in the exchanges
Absolutely 🥊
Logan paul vs ksi was greatest fight all time though
Azbycxdwevfugthsirjqkplomn McPinth stfu
They don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Hagler was a beast.
@gblueslover2 truth!
@G Alaniz .... Marvelous Marvin Hagler is arguably the most underrated Middleweight Champ of all time. His “loss” to Leonard was a crime.... they stole the belt, he didn’t lose it
I loved how hagler was always the aggressor, always moving forward ..
@@robertnewell4054 Well for having not fought in a few years, & not taking any tuneup fights....Leonard Won! It was Shocking, but even if it was ruled a draw, impressive.
@Titanicus FirePower .... Leonard was given the Belt due to his popularity & place in Boxing Hierarchy. Traditionally when fighting a long standing unified champion YOU MUST WIN DECISIVELY..... that wasn’t the case. Well Leonard might have thrown more punches Hagler decidedly threw harder & more effectively. Staggered the man & had him on his bicycle. It was one of the worse decisions in boxing history
This is my first time seeing this fight …… WOW!🔥
Knew it was gonna be a brawl from the face off 😅 rip Marvin .
i just learned of the passing of Marvelous Marvin Hagler ... rest in peace, champ ... this round imo is, no doubt, the greatest round in boxing history! the level of punching power exchanged relentlessly between these two champions in this round is staggering!
Yeah, great round! Imo it’s Gatti vs Ward round 3. Maybe because I watched it live
@@wesheckler9805 round 9. Round 3 of the 2nd fight was nuts too
ALL THREE--FACT...
@@fvgc454ss yeah, I was torn between those two rounds.
Ah, so that’s why this appeared in my YT recommended videos. Sad to hear.
RIP dad. Still remember watching this together
wow man I feel ya, teary eyed both my fathers died young rt behind each other months apart. but in this age of boxing respect was heavy. we all watched the fight together all my brothers uncles and fathers. deep.
Condolences 🙏 and prayers for your lost. Glad you're able to remember and cherish that moment and memories together. What a great 1st RD
Same here, we got up early to watch this figh heret in SA, good times!
Mee too. In Italy was very late, but we woke up to watch this beautiful fight
A superior black boxer being trained by Italians.......
Best of the best all time, met at the same time..
Both fighters gave their best. But I have to highlight the greatness of Tommy Hearn. In the first round he suffered a broken arm but he kept giving a good fight two rounds more. Wao!
He broke his right hand on Hagler's head, not his arm.
0:39 Hearns broke his right hand on that first hard punch that rocked Hagler. But like a man, he never used it as an excuse for losing. He always gave Hagler his due.
Did not no he broke his hand 😂 love hagler. To fab fighters
Jonathan Blaze True. And that is class.
@@Granto-ni9qw I think he broke his hand with there gloves collided when hearns was on his back against the ropes
Sean Keys true , it was confirmed that his hand was broken .
@@ts99forever back in the day I didn't get to see that fight live it was ON TV pay-per-view my brother had woken me up about 1am and said hers got knocked out in the third round and I felt devastated, but once I got to see the fight that first round was so brutal I was still proud of Tommy and though he lost I felt a lot better once I seen the way he went all out,
I’m from England and I remember setting the alarm clock to listen on the radio early in the morning, the excitement of listening to this fight is hard to describe, just awesome. God bless Marvin Hagler he gave us so much, so sad 🙏🏻👌
Boxing on radio being exciting just the thought of that nowadays makes me happy for what was and sad we may never get it again. All you needed was noise and it was classic
Boxing on the radio is class!! Especially with a good commentator... Sounds like a real blood bath! 😅
As a kid back in the 80s I'd listen to the big American fights with my radio under the bedcovers late at night. There was something magical about it.
@@mrhed0nist magical yes Tam and something you never forget 😉
Omg yes. I remember listening to the boxing commentary on bbc radio 2 in the 80 on my walkman.
Three of the greatest rounds in all of boxing history. Period. I watched this live and I was stunned. My grandfather, my uncle and I were all yelling at the tv till we were hoarse
Best round of boxing ever.
2 warriors doing what they do best.
I can’t get enough of this round.
👍👍👍👍👍
in France this fight was broadcast in the middle of the night, I had recorded it to watch it the next morning, I was 14 years old and I witnessed one of the most beautiful fights in the history of boxing. For this, and with a little delay, thank you Mr HAGLER (and Mr Heans). You are still my favourite boxer today. RIP
The look they give each other at the end of the round is chilling , no words just that stone cold killer look! wow! RIP Mr. Hagler .
"screw this boxing s--t! one of us is going out on the stretcher!"
😂😂😂
Did he die?
Watching this clip after the Crawford performance really puts in perspective how legendary his performance was imo.
Crawfords better than both of them, as great as they were. I know wth I'm looking at in Crawford, he just might be the GOAT frfr
@@Jay-ml9vo
I would Pick the two Sugars and Tommy over Bud at welter.
Incredible! fantastic battlers both!
Hearns once said he went back to his corner and he thought it was Round 9.
This was a 15 rounder inside 3 minutes
It was back when boxers were warriors who wanted to fight each other to prove who was best. Now they don't go for a piss without asking Eddie hearn!
The single greatest round in the history of combat sports.
Agreed
No argument from me. It's #1
straight heat exchanges..... also wattup Twice stan, you've seen Sana's new photobook vid today
Without a doubt. Even watching it today it brings you to the edge of your seat. RIP Hagler. He got cheated in the Leonard fight.
Both these guys were straight killers, they were bad to the bone that's for sure.
This is hands down the best round in boxing history, never seen a more epic encounter. They both had the courage to go all out and lay it completely on the line, you could see it in their eyes before the fight started, they were willing to go out on their shields, massive respect for both. I didn't even see it as hearns being defeated, more like it cemented his legacy as a legend as well as hearns obviously for coming out with the victory. Fucking hell can you imagine facing hearns as a welterweight, he was HUGE, how could he have weighed 147 pounds I don't know, would Mayweather Jr have been able to beat hearns, who knows?
Hearns is the worst fighter in history for Mayweather to fight Chloe.
He would either be vapourised early or lose a wide PTS decision.
No one ever outboxed Tommy not even Ray and Wifrid.
Gatti vs ward round 9
@@soltkat
Yes but the stakes were not the same - it was not two top tier all time greats going at it (although I wish Tommy had not broken his right in the first few seconds).
Norton Holmes 15 was another cracker too. 👍🥊
@soltkat this was an epic round. But round 10 of castillo vs Corrales was f#cking insane
Floyd was made for Tommy. For Floyd's shoulder roll to work, you have to have the length advantage and/or the speed advantage. Floyd had neither. He gets demolished early.
This was the golden Era of boxing, I loved watching Hearns, Hagler, & Sugar Ray Leonard box!!!
And Roberto Duran.
This is the kind of fight to pay for.
Respect to these legends.
I just read the Sports Illustrated article written after this fight. It's a fitting tribute to Marvelous Marvin: "...a deep burning anger wrote his battle plan. It was a simple strategy, one that could have been designed by Attila: Keep the swords swinging until there are no more heads to roll, give no quarter, take no prisoners. There would be only one pace, all-out; only one direction, forward."
Damn.
@@drycreek9 Damn is RIGHT! :)
What a fight and what a chin on hagler. Hearns hit him with everything! Never tire of watching it even after all these years.
Aww man what a classic! Best First Round in the history of boxing. Till this day I have to score it a draw both fighters were hurt in this round but boy what a war this was
Still gives you chills! This wasn't just two guys slinging Joey's .....This was two of the greatest of all-time just saying f#ck it, and banging for the Baddest dude on the block title....... Hearns was always kill or be killed, with axe handles for fists and Hagler was an absolute Terminator, couldn't be stopped......This fight was a beautiful thing.
axe handles?
it’s a shame we don’t see fights like happen in boxing anymore

Basically a Rocky movie fight scene....but these warriors are doing it for real....
