According to legend, in 1893 a candy company introduced Jack Fruit gum. It didn't sell because no one knew what a jackfruit tasted like. William Wrigley Jr then changed it's name to Juicy Fruit gum, and it was huge hit.
The "Today I Found Out" RUclips channel did a story about the ingredients in Juicy Fruit in 2015.
I would never have put those 2 tastes together, but now that I think about it, I’d believe it. It’s because of how sweet Juicy Fruit is, I just thought that it was a mix of a bunch of fruits.
No one is going to talk about the screen going green? Ok
I'm as amazed as you are. I did have one friend text me about it when this went up. Back when I posted this 5+ years ago I was just making videos for fun, I never would have dreamed to have more than 100 subscribers. These old videos make me cringe.
Nice haha
That's just a close-up shot of the jack fruit
@@WeirdExplorer well you gotta start somewhere :)
@@WeirdExplorer You had to start somewhere and it's obvious your fans still love your videos.
To me it's more like of a flavor that reminds something as a banana and a melon put together, yet the flavor of its own, I really like this fruit
Good description. A bit like banana candy
Now 6 years later its finally getting its recognition as a delicious meat substitute in NYC, I see it all over now.
It was so hard to find not that long ago. Amazing how its changed.
Where in manhattan can you find it? I take the Path train from NJ every couple of weeks so I'd like to purchase one or two to try. Thanks
We call it kathal in india we make bhaji of it and believe me it is delicious
Jackfruit can be found pretty commonly in California. They're expensive, 1.29 a pound.
They're available through Frieda's, which is an exotic fruit grower, they can be bought at Ralph's (Kroger)
Jackfruit seeds can be roasted to replicate the aroma of chocolate. Juicy fruit is actually flavored after Jackfruit itself.
One of my favorite flavors in fruit. They're a huge pain in the ass to cut open, the latex gets all over everything. You have to lube up super well.
It's related to the fig, in the family Moraceae.
Yeah its amazing how they aren't that hard to find anymore.
Stop'n'Shop carries a 1 LB clamshell of the pods for $13. Much better and easier than the whole fruit.
I live in the UK and yesterday my mum came home with a “Barbecued Pulled Jackfruit” ready meal, like pulled pork but with Jackfruit instead, I was absolutely amazed that supermarkets were even selling Jackfruit products and I instantly thought of this channel! I’m about to show her this video now 😊
Very cool
when I made this video jackfruit was very hard to find fresh. now they're everywhere! so glad to see supermarkets get a bit more interesting
When he said “It’s crunchy” his voice kinda sounded like he was gonna cry.
I managed to get my hands on jackfruit this week. It really smells of juicy fruit chewing gum. The taste was a mix of apple, mango, banana, honey melon and pineapple. Truely a taste revelation.
Omg ep 17. Must be the earliest episode of yours you tube has recommended for me... 9 years on!!!!
Found mineat an asian market in Mesa, AZ. The smell didnt bother me. I think it tastes like fruitstripe gum!
I’ve had ripe jackfruit - canned - and I think it tastes like banana candy. Plenty of tasty. 😋 l would try it fresh if I could buy it precut, because cutting it can indeed be a pain in the tush
Jackfruit is THE KING of fruits! Its delicious! It taste like candy, similar to that processed juicy fruit gum taste, but way better. Such an exciting fruit! It makes a perfect meal on its own
Its actually in reverse, juicy fruit gum is jack fruit flavoured
to me it kinds of taste like juicy fruit (gum)

@@brucekives2194 Gum lore
This is one of my absolute favorite fruits! We have two trees growing. The variety that we eat tastes and smells like juicy fruit gum. As vegans we use the green fruit quite a bit. But sweet and ripe is my favorite way. Thank you for these videos.
I always wondered if durians were related to jackfruit and now thanks to your video I know they are very closely related to each other
I thought they were the same lol
Also raw jackfruit segments are cut into small pieces and fried to make chips... really good... even better than potato or banana chips.
I wish you could see your future self reviewing all different types of durian and loving it.
A message from the future:
In the future, you’ll be eating durians and comparing them to ice cream. Yay for personal growth!
My local store just started getting in jackfruits, hence me rewatching this video from ages ago. Still not sure if I’m brave enough though.
I have one in my fridge right now. They are grown down here in florida by individuals and sold in the Chinese markets either whole or as kernels. The seeds are also sold either raw or roasted.
I liked this fruit a lot. Kinda...mango like ,i guess, maybe with a tinge of sweet potato. But the texture is the most interesting bit. Fibrous, yet soft. Rubbery, yet nice. ...
I am from Kerala , like you said jackfruit is very common in our state .
Thanks for the info on how to step up torward the durian!
i got to try jackfruit for the first time the other day 🥰 apparently our local publix is now getting them from mexico. they had both whole fruits and sections already sliced.. so i bought a quarter of a jackfruit for $10 lol. it was super good and i don't even know if it is a good one or not 🤣 i boiled the seeds too and with a lil salt they were delicious.
i had some today that i bought at my local safeway! it was really good!
i thought it tasted like Juicy Fruit gum
Things have changed a lot since this time. I see jackfruit in the grocery stores all over now. I bought one for $2
My local supermarket (stop n shop in New Jersey) is finally brining in some exotic fruits. Been trying to find jackfruit for some time now so I was happy when saw it on the shelf. Not only that it smells wonderful but also it tastes amazing .. Unfortunately I am allergic :-(
I once gave a friend some jackfruit and she puffed up like a balloon. I guess its not too uncommon to have an allergic reaction. Sorry to hear about it, but I'm glad you liked it before things took a turn for the worst.
Those seeds can be roasted over charcoal and eaten. They taste really good
Jackfruit is an awesome meat replacement! Works really well as a pulled pork substitute. Not the most nutritionally dense but still really good
'Deadly' is an exaggeration. I live in South India where we have a tree in almost every house. Never heard of anyone injured by a jackfruit. I've had coconuts and mangoes fall and damage vehicles, rooftops, or other objects, but never a jackfruit. If a jackfruit has to fall on its own it has to be overripe but then they disintegrate and get eaten by birds, squirrels, or bats.
You can find frozen jackfruit at Whole Foods. It tastes just like Juicy Fruit gum with a hint of rancidity.
HEAVY on the rancidity. I haf the WF one and thought it was durian! So gross! How do ppl like this??
The fact that this cat hasn't aged at all in 8 years is the strongest argument for vegetarianism I've ever witnessed.
This video is making my mouth water!
I got a whole jackfruit and I might have let it sit too long as it got a bit moldy (just on the outside) before we cut it open. However there is a really good flavor but there's always this funkiness in the background that isn't palatable for me. I wonder if i let the fruit get overripe or it's just funky in general?
Finally got a quarter of one today, trying it for the first time. WOW is it good. Fruit loops, good comparison.
Tried this for the first time today. It's REALLY good. Creamy, sweet pineapple describes it well. I must be a little allergic to it though because it makes my mouth tingle and itch about 30 seconds after eating...
my dads from the philippines and loves jackfruit, theres even ice cream with it i found in the states. never got to try the fruit alone but i really want to.
In California you can get it because they also grow it in Mexico.
It can actually grow and fruit in SoCal.
Easy to find in California.
Seen a front yard tree, too.
Is there a way to know if its ripe or overripe? We got one and it turned black and mushy in just a couple days. I was disappointed that we didn't have a chance to try it.
We can get Jackfruit seasonally and sometimes Frozen in the Asian Ethic markets in Seattle for about 7 bucks for a serving flat size. Then you can get whole ones, but they go by size. I've lived here for about ten years and have always seen them when we have gone shopping.
Jackfruit is very useful. People have used the treesap to robs ATMs before.
I think they taste like some perfume flower taste too, and pink bubblegum mixed with banana and slightly pineapple, but i've never noticed any funkyness... i think it's one of the fruits that i can eat most of in the world without getting tired of it, the other being regular bilberries in the forest (basically all swedish forest is filled with them as the main subvegetation), just grazing them like a bear, and also water melons... those are fruits i don't ever get tired of, maybe longan too
I bought a 16 pound one for around $12 at a local market in CA. big piece of work to get it all cut and fruit taken out but most people really liked it (shared it around with several neighbors) it takes a bit to get used to that onion taste but it def was like a mango/banana/pineapple flavor. It did get kind of soft in a ziplock bag in the fridge pretty quick and more pungent. Next time I'll just cut only parts that i want to eat to keep it fresher longer.
Tried it today, I thought of pineapple too, but it also tasted like bubble gum to me 😊
Jackfruit is sweet, with overtones of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum. You would immediately detect that. We occasionally see them here in our VietNam market. The aril pods are really very delicious, but extremely messy to shuck out because the surrounding tissue is loaded with latex. Out of a 20-pound jackfruit I can harvest two 1-gallon zip-lock bags of arils. It freezes well, maintaining its flavor and texture. The seeds are edible after cooking, very similar to chestnuts.
We eat jackfruit ripe, unripe (cooked) we even eat the seeds (cooked). It's a staple fruit in Eastern India.
i got the pleasure to try jackfruit for the first time a few weeks ago.. it smelled a bit like rotting garbage..and it def had a funky smell/taste..like weirdly a hint of chicken...but that tutti fruity taste and interesting texture saved it.. without the funky chicken like taste i would love it
haha, I never got a chickeny taste from it. Thats interesting though because young jackfruit it sometimes used as a meat substitute
neptuniumforest It Smells So Strong
neptuniumforest you must have eaten durian
I don't think that's jackfruit
Yeah that's not jackfruit mate, or it's very unripe jackfruit. I can confirm coz I have a jackfruit tree in front of my house
In the UK we buy ripe jackfruit tinned. It smells like baby sick but tastes like a mango and a banana. I love it with custard. Unfortunately we unable get the seeds. In the caribbean we boiled the seeds. It is called breadnut.
AuntyM66 Yeah, I've had the tinned jackfruit before, it loses a lot of flavor in the process, but works in a pinch. Hmm, breadnut is actually the name of a different fruit thats related to jackfruit.
Jared Rydelek Hi Jared have you review the breadnut on your channel ?
Not breadnut no. Out of all the autocarpus fruits, I've reviewed bread fruit, Jackfruit, cempedak and marang.
Okay many thanks
Have you noticed a difference in the different colors? I have tended to find that the ones where the edible part is orange taste sweeter than those where it is yellow (the two seem to be sold interchangeably, so I assume they are grown without any particular selection of one color over the other) .
My 99 Ranch Market in DFW had whole fresh jackfruits for just $.79 a pound! I picked up a small 13 pounder and was pleasantly surprised by the taste. Probably not something I'd eat out of hand but IMO the fruit should go well in salads or with yoghurt/ice cream. Also going to try roasting the seeds. It's awesome that so many great fruits are now available in the states.
Freaking love this show.
Thanks!
We tried a jackfruit a few weeks ago by finding it in the supermarket and thinking what is that thing. I feel was probably not ripe enough because the fruit wasn't nearly as sweet as hoped for, kinda disappointing, but the internet told me to try cooking the meaty-stringy parts that surround the fruit, and it tasted surprisingly good with barbecue sauce. Not good enough to make me wanna go vegetarian on a regular basis or anything, but definitely an interesting thing to try.
Glad you got a chance to try it, cooking unripe jackfruit is a bit time consuming but good, I've never tried using the fresh jackfruit outer bits, maybe I'll give that a try in the future :)
Its funny how now, 8 years after this video was posted, I can go to this local supermarket and buy a 9 pound jackfruit for 7 dollars
Where?
The softer ones are the sweetest you have to try it
The seed after being either boiled and or roasted is rather tasty.
Found some at a Korean grocery today, tasty but a little funky smelling and hard to describe the texture. I think I'd eat again.
glad you got the chance to try it :)
I hope I can try this one day
mmm froot loops.. i really wanna try jackfruit one day. 🤤
When trying to describe the taste of jackfruit, I was expecting "bubblegum"... wrigley's juicy fruit chewing gum. There's a video where they were trying to find a fruit which tastes like "juicy fruit chewing gum" and finally jackfruit was the closest match
If your jackfruit stinks, it's probably not fresh. Jackfruits smell really really good. Elephants goes crazy near my place when they smell a ripe jackfruit.
Attitude go I agree. I'm confused by people on here saying they stink... They don't smell bad at all.
Got my hands on one of these today and all my freaking God it is delicious
nice, glad you enjoyed
they sell the whole thing fresh at jewel osco in chicago. i guess what a difference 10 years makes.. i dont have to look for them because they are in all the store, or maybe i shop at places were they sell then normally idk. i watched this video years eons ago and now i eat jackfruit (after pomegranate season) forty going north
The jacfruits I've had are slippery and can potentially choke you but... Its so good 🤣
Since u had visited Kerala have u tried Anjili chakka which is like a mini jackfruit it is slightly sour and found throughout west coast of India
The smell is good if you smelled it before you knew the smell of BO.
I've had durian before and liked it. Never tried jack. The durian was quite expensive as i bought one around 12 pounds in weight. How does the JF cost compare to a durian's cost?
far cheaper for jackfruit. You can get them $1/lb in nyc, but durian is $10/lb when you can find it fresh.
Weird Explorer i live in tulsa n paid around $35 for the 12 lb semi fresh durian. Altho that was almost 10 years ago...lol. I have no idea what it is per lb nowadays here.
Data Quester in my area, I’ve found in my area for 3.99/Ib.
I think jackfruit tastes like juicy fruit gum, you can get it at Asian supermarkets in the US
Do u ever tried the seed too? U should boiled it , gave it a bit salt and it taste much better than potato + it has plenty nutritions
I found a quarter of a jackfruit in Bakersfield CA for 3 bucks, did I get a good deal? I think I did
I love jackfruit! i think it tastes a lot like the artificial banana flavour in chewing gum or popsicles, if you like those you're gonna like jackfruit better.
We have it in our backyard
Here in Kerala, unripened jackfruit is cooked as a staple food. Using it as a meat replacement is news to me.
The state I live in isnt tropical but I can usually find jack fruit at safe way for 8$ a pound
Yeah since I made this video jackfruit has become much more popular
The market down the street from my house sells Jackfruit all the time hard to find yes but if you know where to go it's abundant
When I made this video jackfruit was not easily available in the USA. Now it's available at whole foods.
Jackfruit tastes like the fruity tootsie rolls.
I just got some mail order and the taste isnt too bad after youve eaten a couple, but the smell, jesus it stinks !, reminds me of petrol / gasoline, so not sure if its over or under ripe or if it just smells like that. Kind of smells like my bin after iv left fruit in there to rot for a few days.
I love the taste of jackfruits but not the texture which is quite rubbery. If you've ever had jackfruit chips it's gonna change your life because the taste will still be there but it's super crunchy like, well, chips. Same thing with durian chips. I wouldn't eat fresh durians if it's the last available food source on earth but I can munch on durian chips 24/7 and you're not gonna believe this but they actually smell AWESOME as chips. It's quite amazing what dehydrating this foul-smelling fruit can do. Ripe jackfruits are also great in Thai desserts (the kinds with loads of coconut milk in them.) Don't know if you're into fruit products or you're a fruit purist who only eat fresh fruits but people invented a lot of ways to make controversial fruits more palatable.
Durian ice cream is how I got to actually like the thing. And yeah jackfruit chips are great.
come to bangladesh... even at my home...... u can eat jackfruit everyday(in summer)
and they are so juicy, colourful, and sweet......and (not chewy)
I would like to some day :)
@@WeirdExplorer u are welcome☺☺
@@abidasultana2798 same, even I have a jackfruit tree at home here in India
It's super easy to find in southern California. Seems like every Asian market has them -- whole fruits, just the meat, and/or canned. Even the whole foods market (which carries predominantly white-people food) near me often has them when in season.
Yeah that wasn't the case when I shot this 8 years ago.
@@WeirdExplorer Maybe not for my local whole foods market (not the chain), but I've been finding and eating them for years in So Cal pretty easily. But it's also pretty easy to find a lot of subtropical fruits in my area -- atemoyas, sapotes, etc. Aside from Asian markets, a lot of people also grow these fruits here in zone 10.
@@WeirdExplorer there are people in SoCal who can grow the trees and get them to produce big fruit. It takes a little over a year to mature.
I really don’t like ripe jackfruit. It’s too sweet, IMO. And the texture was too gummy/chewy for me.
I’ve used the canned jackfruit (I know! Sacrilege!), which *is* tolerable as a substitute for pulled pork if you put enough barbecue sauce on it, though!
Source: vegan here, yo.’
(Later in video)-Wow-you really like it! I’ve agreed with your reviews, mostly, Jared, so I’m going to have to try fresh jackfruit again!
Tomorrow is produce delivery day at my Asian market, so-we’ll see! I think it’s in season now.
mria621 LOL I should have read the comments before commenting. I saw a recipe for vegan bbq "pulled pork" on a RUclips ad a while back and had just made mention of it. Looked super gross in the ad while cooking, bur the end product looked alright. I'm not vegan, but I love a lot of vegan recipes because they have found so many interesting and tasty ways to prepare vegetables beyond plain old steaming or boiling and seasoning with butter/salt/pepper.
Jackfruit (nangka here) its very delicious!
I've been seeing some huge ones in the Publix Supermarket here in Central Florida lately. They seemed rather expensive for an untried, possibly not palatable taste experiment. Next...
The transport is expensive. Next...
my fav fruit
I've lived in a house with a jackfruit tree for over 2 decades. No fruit fell down - esp on the family peoples.
This tree is so common and deaths from falling fruits are never heard of. Don't take this part seriously....
Also, one typically does not bite into the pod directly. You peel it off and eat the flesh. If you take a bite directly, you may very probably hit upon the inner (unpleasant) layers....
i think the fruits too sweet for me, something about it is also nauseating but i love the seeds, i boil them and they taste a bit like yucca
Fun fact: Juicy Fruit gum is flavored from jackfruit
I guess I should jump on the fact that there is a Vietnamese grocery in the city I'm in that has jackfruit (as well as jujube) in stock right now.
Do it!
they sell these at my local supermarket in rural/suburban Utah. Too expensive for me to buy. I want to try this. I have only had it as a cooked meat substitute at Even Stevens sandwich food chain. I am a vegan (except for the occasional hunted deer venison)
You gotta have the ripe version. It tastes better and completely different
I bought some over ripe jack fruit at a chinese grocery. It wasnt so good, i tried to roast the seeds, also not too good.
It tastes like the fruits in canned fruit cocktail!!! But fresher
Since you mention less sour and sweeter pineapple flavor, have you had the white pineapple variety? They are a special variety I had in Hawaii and from what I have heard it is available in Asia some places. They are white inside, much less pulpy than regular pineapples, much less sour and much sweeter and more flavor. Imagine a pineapple but taken up a notch in that every aspect is more awesome.
I haven't had that, I would love to review some different pinapple varieties in the future. Maybe when I get to Hawaii :)
They also have them in Asia, for example in Okinawa they have white pineapple, I do not know if it is the same strain as Hawaii but it is white, look www.specialtyproduce.com/produce/Peach_Pineapple_10308.php
I always thought it tasted like the banana laffy taffy
Still so expensive to find fresh in the UK :(
Best way to describe what jackfruit tastes like is very lowkey Juicy Fruit gum
"Hard to find"...theres a vietnam seafood market in my town wich sells like 5 to 10 every time i go there, always in stock(i live in the US).
Yeah I filmed this 8 years ago though. things have changed
@@WeirdExplorer never thought of that..
It's kinda funny how I had durian first and like several years later I got to try th jackfruit. But anyway, I like both fruits and I know that durian can be hell for other people like my brother. He tasted like only a tip of the spoon of the durian and instantly spit it into his trashcan, but it got worse and like an hour later that little piece in there contaminated his whole room and it smelled really awful
Theres a fruitarian couple that constantly eat champedak
The whole savory/sweet/funky thing is an acquired taste to be sure. I actually don't mind it in durian anymore, but cempedak I can't handle... maybe one day. I doubt I will ever fall into the group of fruitarians that obsess over it.
Yeeeeeeeeeee
When vegetarians claim meat stinks I always tell them about Durian and Jackfruit. 😂
its actually not that hard to find in the US, its very common in Asian supermarkets and Asian communities
