  • So this is not something I recommend anyone to attempt. I wanted to test out if to see how much drop I needed. I also did research to make sure it's safe to drive on cut springs. Here is a video to help you make decision. please be safe and do research.
    what springs to cut:

    Thanks for the great video. Just be careful with metal shavings. One day when you get an MRI the metal shavings in or under the skin will rip out. Could blind you if in the eyes.

    As I'm watching you cut this spring with the spring compressor still installed, the song "Dumb Ways To Die" is playing in my head.

    when 2 metals touch each other they both rot, that pad isnt just for damping it is whats called a thermal break, you need something rubber or plastic inbetween the spring and the spring perch or you will junk your spring perch and then maybe your car because its a pita to fix. this is a rule in engineering YOU MUST HAVE A THERMAL BREAK BETWEEN METALS

      I see how that can make sense but then the bottom area would rot too. The top is flat and lays much deeper. I'm not doubting this but I've taken springs out of other vehicles that came stock with nothing on top.

      When using the spring compressor, try to get 7 coil segments fully compresses (they will all be touching each other). No need to loosen the ball joint if you compress fully.

      @@petescarport the bottom of the spring should have a sleeve tubing round it to protect it, i am sure you have saw springs without them lol

    The measurement of the spring open is different than the spring compressed. 2 inches turn into 1 inch that’s why didn’t make much difference on the height

    Any tips for putting the spring back in? I managed to get my LF back in on my 92 500sel but I'm struggling with my RF. Kinda afraid it's going to kill me lol. I disconnected the shock just to get it out of the way, anything else I should do? I have the same spring compressor setup as you. Car is on jackstands with plenty of clearance

      Always difficult to know exactly what someone is dealing with from a message. I’m actually editing a full video walking through how to do a full swap on springs step by step but if you can hit me up on instagram with photos I can definitely help

    Hey, just subscribed. Im about to swap in some 35mm lowering springs. Do you still need spring compressors if you take out the wishbones at the same time? Mine are pretty rusty so im putting new ones in. Im guessing ill need compressors regardless. And what about the rears? TIA

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  2 года назад +1

      Yes 100% I would use compressor. Stock ones are extremely compressed. You may not need it to install the lowering ones

    Question
    When the Spring is removed and on the ground, can you remove the tool then.. or does it have to be on the car
    Thanks

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  2 года назад +1

      You can remove the tool off the car. I just left it on to make it easy to put back into the car

    Can you cut 1.5 coils or does it have to be a full coil at a time?

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  3 года назад

      Yes you can it's just easiest to match up one coil from side to side. I am thinking about taking out another half but the car is sitting so level from front to rear right now.

  • @jonlechevet8883
    @jonlechevet8883 3 года назад

    Did not lower ehough?? You measured the spring coil spacing (1.5") while it was uncompressed. You need to measure the spacing while it is compressed (in car, car on ground) which may be up to 1/2 of an uncompressed spring. Guess cutting a full coil would lower 3/4 -1", NOT the 1.5" you expected.

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  3 года назад

      Yup. But I didn’t want to over cut. I’m actually very happy now with the height. It’s easy to drive and get on lift and looks great.

      Yes basically the same since I didn't go too low. I didn't notice much of a difference at all. Maybe a slight bit stiffer
